Delaying Endpoint definition updates by one week

Hi,
We would like to update our Endpoint Definitions with a one week-lag.
I.e. the clients in our environment should never download definitions that were just released.
Instead every definition update should be quarantined for one week, where we can perform tests in a non-production environment to be 100% sure that it does not impact our systems negatively.
What is the easiest way to accomplish this? We are running Windows 7 and SCCM 2012 R2.

You should first configure SCEP NOT to download and install update automatically and only do it for one or few machines which you do testing. Once everything was fine, then you could do manual deployment every week.
Or you could only add share folder as resource to deploy update and disable other sources and once you tested, download the latest definition from Microsoft Malware Protection Center and put it inside the share folder.
For more information about updating definition, take a look at:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj822983.aspx
Just I am wondering why you want to delay downloading definition? It is not recommended and might put your PCs at risk. If you are facing any compatibility issues with definition update and your programs, you may add those programs to exception list instead.

  • Endpoint Definition Updates are not being synced

    Hello all,
As of last week, our ConfigMgr clients have been falling behind on the Endpoint definitions. It was brought to my attention when a particular definition was "causing issues" so I checked the server to see if we had a more recent one. It did, so
I had the person click "Update" in the SCEP console. It said no updates were needed. The same message came up when running a managedupdate via CMD. If I pointed to -MMPC in the CMD manual update, it downloaded a much more recent definition.
I looked at CM components, log files, etc and all looked "green" and healthy. I could sync updates, and it found new updates for other products, but never any SCEP definitions. After banging my head against the wall for awhile I went into WSUS
itself and to the update catalog via Import Updates...the most recent one in the catalog (that I see) is 1.173.2497.0, so I assumed that my CM SUP/WSUS was indeed working correctly, and that the catalog is just behind the MMPC definition.
However that was yesterday, and I still haven't pulled any new definitions and the catalog is still show .2497, while if I update SCEP via the command line with -MMPC it comes up with a much newer definition file. 1.173.3.0 to be exact.
This has been working just fine since we implemented CM2012 last fall, and only recently stopped syncing these updates.
Has anyone else seen this before?

Thanks for your reply, Jason. To answer your questions,
Are you using an ADR for your SCEP definitions? Yes, and it runs successfully after each sync that returns 0 new updates
What's the latest definition showing under All Updates in ConfigMgr? The latest was the .2497 in the "All Updates" list for two entire days
Assuming you have a single Software Update Group for the definitions, have you reviewed the deployment on this group? You assume correctly, and the deployment was still active
Have you reviewed the package where the definitions are stored to ensure it is properly distributed to the DPs?
The package still contained that "old" .2497 definition, and was successfully distributed to all DPs.
All this said, I noticed this afternoon that the SUP/WSUS (same box) itself had a GPO configuring itself as the WSUS source (WUServer and WUStatusServer registry entries were listed under HKLM/Software/Policies/Microsoft/Windows/WindowsUpdate). This isn't
supposed to be set, as per the documentation, and I deleted the registry keys and ran a sync and was immediately emailed with "new update alert" from the WSUS/SUP server that it had new definitions.
I know having this GPO messes with WSUS clients if that GPO sets the update source, instead of letting the CM client manage that, but would it affect the actual synchronization ON the server? I wouldn't think so, and maybe this was just dumb luck,
but it immediately downloaded the last 5-6 definitions that had been missing, all the way up to 1.173.2518.0
I didn't disable the GPO just yet- I want to see if it stops syncing when it reapplies. It had been set for a long time I imagine, so I don't know why it would break
now, if it was the culprit.

  • My Endpoint defintion update ADR seems to have stopped working

    Hi,
I noticed this morning that all my Endpoint clients haven't downloaded any Endpoint definitions since 1/13/2015.  If I check the update history on the clients they show that the last time they installed an Endpoint definition update was 1/13/2015.
If I look at the software updates on my SCCM 2012 SP1 server it shows that the last Endpoint definition update downloaded was yesterday (1/14/2015) evening but nothing since then.  It also shows that this Endpoint definition update wasn't downloaded
or deployed as all the Endpoint definition updates have been in the past
The status for the Endpoint definition update ADR says successful and no errors so I'm a little confused as to what's going on here. This has been working fine for over 2 years.
Any suggestions as to where to look to try and diagnose what's happening?
    Thanks
    Nick

so not sure what that means.  I manually ran the Endpoint Definition update ADR from the SCCM console and after doing that it SCCM did appear to download and deploy the latest Endpoint definition from MS. Though interestingly enough if I now look at
the status of the Endpoint Definition update ADR it has a status that says:

and if I look at the ruleengine.log file I see the following:

But it appears that this didn't prevent the ADR from working correctly as all my clients seem to have pulled down the latest Endpoint Definition update from the SCCM server.
This morning I also went to the Software section and initiated a "Synchronize Software Updates" from the SCCM console.  In the SCCM console the Software Update Point  Synchronization status shows the last sync completed and the status
is 0x0000.  I looked a the wsyncmgr.log and wsyncmgr.lo_ files and they don't seem to show any errors.
What triggers the ADR to run?

    Hi,
I am downloading manually endpoint protection definition updates from SCCM 2012 R2, which log file I have to check for download progress.
    Regards,

If you are downloading updates manually you will need to have an alternate source other than ConfigMgr for definition updates.

Here is a list of the logs for SCEP.

The logs depend on which sources you have set for updates, if you have updates coming from windows update or WSUS then you could look at WindowsUpdate.log

  • System Center Endpoint Protection Definition Updates

Hi can anyone advise deploying definitions via SCCM 2012 and selecting the source as being "Updates distributed from Configuration Manager" does that mean each client will go to the Primary Site to get updates? Or by using ADR will it ensure that
    definitions come via distribution points?
Also another question, as sccm 2012 is not rolled out to all sites yet, and will be deploying unmanaged clients, when I deploy the SCEP client offline un-managed with a policy file, is there a way then later to change policy on the client by command line?

You could configure updating SCEP in many ways, including:
Updates distributed from Configuration Manager – This method uses Configuration Manager software updates to deliver definition and engine updates to computers in your hierarchy.
Updates distributed from Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) – This method uses your WSUS infrastructure to deliver definition and engine updates to computers.
Updates distributed from Microsoft Update – This method allows computers to connect directly to Microsoft Update in order to download definition and engine updates. This method can be useful for computers that are not often connected to the business network.
Updates distributed from Microsoft Malware Protection Center – This method will download definition updates from the Microsoft Malware Protection Center.
Updates from UNC file shares – With this method, you can save the latest definition and engine updates to a share on the network. Clients can then access the network to install the updates.

  • SCEP definition update through Automate Deployment Rule

Hi all.  Got a question on deploying SCEP 2012 definition updates to client PC through SCCM2012 R2 by using Automate Deployment Rule.  It looks like the client PC is not receiving the definition updates immediately.  The ADR seems working

launch the update process.  I just wondering how much time we need to wait for the SCEP definition update to apply onto the client PC.  Microsoft seems release 3 - 4 definition update per day, I am afraid we might not using the latest definition
update due to the time waiting issue.  Thank you.

I've configured the polling interval to take place every 3 hours.  I guess this contribute to the waiting time.  I will keep an eye on it to see if the definition in deed installs automatically.
Yes that's one of the delay which is the major Contribution also there would be some delay for the updates when they are downloading and getting updated to the distribution points. You can check the 'Content Status' for that package to verify if it got updated.

  • I allowed Apple updates about two weeks ago and now Safari is way too slow.  I have tried using Airport and Ethernet and the problem is the same.  Yesterday, I updgraded to Safari 5.1 and the problem is now worse.  Any solutions?

I allowed Apple updates about two weeks ago and now Safari is way too slow.   I have tried using Airport and Ethernet and the problem is the same.  Yesterday, I upgraded to Safari 5.1 and now the problem is worse.  Any solutions?

I can't stand peremptory affirmations like "Nothing is wrong with Safari".
Thousands of users can't be wrong (see the discussions).
If I read you the right way, it's never software' fault, it's the user who's the culprit.
    Amazing!
In this very case, the fact is we can't give to "christinefromfonthill" a good solution because weren't sitting in front of her Mac.
You give her a good advice which could, perhaps, lead to an improvement.
But must also admit that Safari is a very slow browser compared to Firefox or Chrome.
And you can't ignore all the problems which arose when upgrading to Lion and were related to the new build and specs of Safari 5.1.
The best example is the apparition of "garbage type" (use of Last Resort font) when reading numerous sites. This never occured before and is the direct consequence of Safari compliance to Web Open Type. This standard prohibits the use of Type 1 Postscript Fonts and is the reason why so many people are in trouble.
I use a Mac for more than 25 years.
I am a very "clean" user who hates the bells and whistles of third party.
My Mac is always up-to-date and despite all my Mac loving care, I run into some problems.
Imagine the nightmare which can occurs for the vulgum pecus who isn't, by definition, a power user aware of all the requirements for running a System in optimal conditions.
May be Safari is one step in advance on its time but lambda users are paying the price for it.

  • SCEP definition updates trying to pull from the Internet - poor behaviour

Most of our clients do NOT have the ability to just head out to the internet to get things (via proxy or otherwise) and as such, I have configured my Malware policy to use "Updates distributed from Configuration Manager" ONLY
I do NOT want it trying to get updates from ANYWHERE ELSE.
    Some aren't behaving. :(
I am seeing log entries that indicate that the client is trying to go out to the Internet to get the updates.
Here is a cycle of the machine's more recent attempt:

Anyone have any suggestions?  I don't want the machines to EVER try to go out to the internet when they are trying to update their SCEP defs.

Stop SCEP from downloading over the internet, uncheck the following locations:
    1. SCFEP Def Deployment (ADR if you have one) -
Download Setting: If software updates are not available on preferred distribution point or remote distribution point, download content from Microsoft Updates
    2. Client Setting (Endpoint Protection) [check your priority if you have more than 1]
Disable Alternet Sources (such as Microsoft Windows Update, ....) for the inital definition update on client computers.
    3. Asset and Compliance :Endpoint Protection, Antimalware Policies (check all that you have and priority)
Defintion Updates: If Configuration Manager is used as a source for definition update, clients will only update from alternate sources if definition is older than (hours)  Set this to 720.  This is the max, after this the machine will be forced
to pull from Microsoft to protect the machine.

  • Two definition updates dueling

We have System Center Endpoint Protection installed.  We are currently getting updates from our WSUS server and we have two different updates that seem to apply for this product.  If you one of them then the other one shows up.  And if you
install the second one then first one comes back needing to be installed.
    The two updates are
Definition Update for Microsoft Endpoint Protection - KB2461484 (Definition 1.165.1899.0)
Definition Update for Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010 - KB2461484 (Definiton 1.101.1659.0)
We unchecked the entire Forefront category on our WSUS server.  But we are still getting both of these updates.
Any suggestion on how to remove the second update would be appreciated.

    Hi,
Decline the superseded update and everything should be done.

  • HT1923 iTunes on my Windows Vista has failed to update over several weeks. Attempting uninstal/reinstall according to iTunes support page. Will not uninstall 'Apple Mobile Device Support' - goes to 99% then progress bar unwinds completely. Tried rebooting

iTunes on my Windows Vista has failed to update over several weeks. Audio will not play out. Attempting uninstal/reinstall according to iTunes support page. Will not uninstall 'Apple Mobile Device Support' - goes to 99% then progress bar unwinds completely. Tried rebooting. Any clues??

    Hey petanque1,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues installing iTunes for Windows. The following article outlines the error message you are receiving and a potential resolution:
iTunes 11.1.4 for Windows: Unable to install or open
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376
Some Windows customers may experience installation issues while trying to install or open iTunes 11.1.4.
    Symptoms may include:
"The program can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer"
"iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error 7 (Windows Error 126)”
"Runtime Error: R6034 - An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly"
"Entry point not found: videoTracks@QTMovie@@QBE?AV?$Vector@V?$RefPtr@VQTTrack@@@***@@$0A@VCrashOnOverf low@@***@@XZ could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\Program Files(x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\WebKit.dll”
    Resolution
Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
    Check for .dll files
    1. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
    2. If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
    3. Reboot your computer.
Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
    Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
    1. Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
    2. Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using theMicrosoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
    3. Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • How to keep the field value in the forms for one week

I have an application that when the user logs on to it , it shows all the documents that are in the current dept.
the form has the following fields:
    document no
    sent date
    assigned to
    dep_LOV
    and a check box
if a user clicks the check box and assignes the document to another dept by cliking the LOv then the assigned to field should be populated with the new value and the sent date should be today's date(sysdate). the requirment is that once the user assignes the documnet to certain depts (for example sales dept) the assigned to field and the sent date should show up in the form for one week and the user should be able to see that data in the form the next time she /he logs onto the application. the one week time is to make sure the documcnt has reached the assigned dept. after one week from today's date the updated assigned_to field and the document no should not display on the form. During the one week if the user logs on to the form again that particular document and the assigned to and sent to fields shoould be grayed out and shhould not be updatable. I will greatly appreciate any suggetion as of what to do to solve this problem. it is urgent. Pleade help

-> so you are saying that I should have a block level post_query trigger and put the where clause in it?
No. Post-query trigger runs AFTER the query has been executed, and it runs once for each row fetched. It is for other purposes, NOT for setting a where clause.
-> Plus i want to be able to gray out the field once populated with the sales dept.I have come up with the following code:
Your Set_item_instance_property is almost correct. And THAT line would go into the Post-Query trigger. This is what you might use:
    <pre><font face = "Lucida Console, Courier New, Courier, Fixed" size = "1" color = "navy"> Set_item_instance_property ('docs.assigned_to',:system.trigger_record, Enabled,Property_False);</font></pre>
Please watch your use of underscore, dashes, commas and parentheses: _ - , ( )
The way to set your default where clause would be the following, and you should do it in the key-exeqry trigger, or someplace similar:
    <pre><font face = "Lucida Console, Courier New, Courier, Fixed" size = "1" color = "navy"> set_block_property('DOCS', default_where,
    'NVL(sent_date,sysdate) >= sysdate-7' );
    Go_block('DOCS');
    Execute_Query;</font></pre>
I used the NVL function so your select will show rows where sent_date is null OR sent_date has a value that is within 7 days prior to the current date.
What is the field :docs.assigned_to used for? If you want to include ONLY rows that are assigned to a particular person, then your where clause might be:
    <pre><font face = "Lucida Console, Courier New, Courier, Fixed" size = "1" color = "navy"> 'assigned_to = :ctrl.assigned_to and NVL(sent_date,sysdate) >= sysdate-7' </font></pre>
and you should have a control block with the assigned_to field in it, where the user can enter a value before querying the DOCS block.
