Deleting mail from backup

I do not use the iCloud mail storage (empty), but yet my iCloud storage indicates that Mail is taking up 1.5 GB of space in my backup. I also do not use the Mail app on my Mac. Is this 1.5 GB coming from email stored on my iPhone? If so, how can I delete this from the iCloud backup? There is insufficient space for my iPhone to conduct its regular backup, and I would like to remove mail being backed up, as this is already stored on my email servers.

I spent some time researching this a couple of months back, and I learned some interesting things.  The most interesting of which came from this Tech Note:
iCloud: About storage buffering
Notably:
Documents, Backup, and Mail all count towards your iCloud Storage space. In some cases, one portion of your storage may appear to vary from the actual storage space it is using. For example, you may notice that your Mail appears to be using 50 MB of storage space when actuality it's only using 10 MB.
This may occur after you free up storage space that you were once using. Your iCloud Storage allocation will readjust itself automatically, but only once another iCloud feature uses the previously allocated space. Until then, it may appear that you are still using more Documents, Backup, or Mail storage space than you actually are.
Wow.  That's quite a little tidbit there.  Especially considering the emails Apple had been sending to all loyal MobileMe customers, that it was now time to pony up for additional (paid) storage.
So, I got tired of waiting and I started fiddling some more. I had already deleted the iCloud account on my iPhone (and added it back.)  No change.  I didn't want to delete saved iCloud documents or data, nor did I want to delete my existing iOS device backups, just to test this.  Because I was dubious it would actually fix anything, and creating a whole new backup for both iPhone and iPad would take awhile.
Then I went and deleted the iCloud account on my iPad (as it was reporting the same "phantom" 1.3 GB of iCloud mail) and then added that iCloud account back.  In time, once everything was synced back, I noticed something:  the iCloud mail was now reporting ("only") 968 MB of space!  That's the first change I've seen!  Progress!
Alas, I checked again, and my iCloud.com mailbox was still completely empty.  So I forged ahead, determined to bring that number closer to zero.
Then on my Mac, I went to "System Preferences -> iCloud -> Manage" and saw the breakdown for how my iCloud Storage was being used.  It says Mail was using 1.3 GB.  WTH?   And also, there it says "To free up storage used by Mail, erase messages in the Junk and Trash folders."  Gee, thanks, yeah, I already did that.
So I opened Mail.app on my Mac, and had it sync with my iCloud account (and confirmed yet again, that each and every folder was empty.)  And then quit Mail.   What's going on here?
Then I followed the instructions here:
If your available Storage displayed in iCloud Settings on your iOS device, in iCloud System Preferences on your Mac or in the iCloud Control Panel for Windows on your PC continues to be different than expected, contact iCloud Support for assistance.
...an contacted iCloud Support, thinking they'd know what I was talking about, and maybe they had some magic switch or button they could press, to "update" my account or something, to refresh the numbers being reported, to accurately show that I wasn't using any iCloud space for Mail at all.
And that's when a funny thing happened.  I didn't even finish the explanation, when I went back to "Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage" to review with him what I was seeing.   (The CSR was asking for my serial number.)   And now, for the first time all day, I see that Mail is no longer listed there at all.  That line is gone.  It appears that my "storage buffering issue" been fixed.  And then I had to explain to the CSR, that it looks like the situation has been resolved.  I had a laugh with him, since we both agreed, that sort of thing just seems to happen all the time.
Sure enough, I went back to "System Preferences -> iCloud -> Manage" (on my Mac) and Mail is now all the way at the bottom of the list, taking up "0 KB."
Success.
In any case, I'm posting this to help others.  I can't say with certainty what fixed this for me, but my hunch is that deleting (and then re-adding) the iCloud account on BOTH my iPhone and iPad had something to do with it.  Or maybe it was launching/syncing via Mail.app, and/or giving it some time.  Or maybe those prayers had something to do with it after all.
The funniest part about all of this is that my whole iPhone backup (with small Camera Roll) takes up 3.6 GB and my whole iPad backup (with even smaller Camera Roll) takes up 1.4 GB... so I'm still right up against that 5 GB quota, and will still end up paying $20/year for the extra 10 GB of space anyway.  If only for elbow room, and if only for peace of mind.
So there ya have it.

  • Delete mail from server when removed from inbox

I have a POP e-mail account set up. Under the mail account advanced settings there is an option to delete mail from the server when I delete it from the iPad inbox. I assume this is a valid option for the account since it is shown, and it is what I would like to do. However it doesn't appear to be working. Is this truly an available option?

I also have a POO account wit ph Verizon and experienced the same thing. Apple tech said that is a property of POP accounts and I would have to change the account to Imap for the iPad to be able to delete from the server.

How do I delete mail from the server using my Ipad

That completely depends on your email service provider.
For gmail, for example, you would do this as follows:
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > [your gmail account] > Advanced > [Move Discarded Messages Into] Deleted Mailbox

I use a pop3 account for mail. Can I set up the mail program to delete mail from server when I delete mail locally?

Not precisely. You can set it to delete when when you move a message from the Inbox which should have the same effect in most cases, but I haven't tested it to make sure.
Mail -> Accounts -> Your POP account. Go to the Advanced pane and check the box that says "remove copy from server after retrieving a message" and make the appropriate setting in the pulldown.

  • Delete mail from server when deleting from mail

    I like Mail.
But - the ONE feature I miss from Entourage is this:
Delete mail from server when deleting the trash
Mail can be set to delete messages from the server -- after downloading to the local computer. OK - BUT - I read my email from 3 computers. I want to keep the messages on the server - unless I delete them after trashing - and to read them on 3 computers.
The BEST way is to delete when I trash them -- NOT when I read them.
Using the mail program to see all messages on the server and to then delete them one-by-one is a major PITA.
How can I tell Apple to add this feature?

Use the "When moved from Inbox" option that should do it. If you trash it then it goes, if you move it goes... HTH

  • Unable to delete mail from inbox. Message cannot move mail from inbox to trash.  How do I solve this.

I am unable to delete mail from my inbox.  A window appears saying "message could not be moved to the mailbox trash.  How do I fix this.

Give your phone a reboot - hold down power/home button together for 10 to 15 secs or until you see the apple logo and then release, wait for your phone to reboot and then try moving  your mail again.

How can I set up my email so when I delete mail from my Mac it deletes from my iPhone as well?

That is a function of your email account, if it is an Imap account it will sync, if it's a POP account, it won't.

  • How can I prevent deleted mail from ending up in "All Mail"     and "Archives"?  To my horror, I've emptied these boxes and lost all my mail from all my boxes  (and why do I need to enter this question three times?"

How can I prevent deleted mail from ending up in "All Mail" and "Archives"?
To my horror, I emptied these boxes and lost all my mail from all my boxes .
All mail also disappeared from my iPad, I suppose because they are "synched"
(Also, no offense, but why do I need to enter this question multiple times?)
    Thanks for any thoughts.

I'm having a similar but slightly different problem. My company just migrated to Gmail, and it's saving mail drafts every 30 seconds into my Trash folder.
I unchecked the "Show in IMAP" preference in the Gmail settings, but my Drafts folder completely disappeared. I went back and checked it and the folder reappeared (with my drafts still in there).
I like the idea if starting an email on my laptop and having the option of finishing it on my iPhone or iPad, so only saving Drafts locally would not be ideal.

  • I cannot delete mail from my inbox and get a message saying (msg) could not be moved to the mailbox trash-POP account".

I suddenly cannot delete mail from my inbox and get a message saying " (msg) could not be moved to the mailbox trash-POP account".  It does not matter if I am trying to delete a single message or mulitiple messages.  Can anyone help?

If you're running Leopard, as your profile says, then you need to post your question in that forum, not the Snow Leopard forums. So if you're really running Snow Leopard, you need to update your profile to show that, as well as give more details about what kind of mail accounts you have, and who your email provider is.

  • The past few days my Mail app has started downloading multiple copies of e-mails from all pop servers.  This is only happening on my Macbook not other macs.  Deleting mail from server does not help. I ran ClamXav found 2 viruses deleted problem continues

opps.  Long title there... The past few days my Mail app has started downloading multiple copies of e-mails from all pop servers.  This is only happening on my Macbook not other macs.  Deleting mail from server does not help. I ran ClamXav found 2 viruses deleted those.  Checked for software update and installed suggested downloads.  Problem still contintues.  Any suggestions?

    Folks,
even after having repaired the inbox folder under "properties" a few times, I still had some e-mails where the contents are different from the subject line.
In other words in the inbox there are two e-mails: one with subject line "abc", and another one with subject line "def".
When I display the e-mail with the subject line "abc", the contents are from the e-mail with the subject line "def" in the in-basket.
What else can be done to correct this problem?
    Thanks and best regards.

  • Why is the Mail app deleting mail from my account?

Hi. I have used the mail app before and when i used it (i have hotmail) i connected it and all, but it started to delete mail from my hotmail account from the mail app. I have the newset software and i heard that a new mail app came. Is this fixed? I do not want to lose any emails from my hotmail account.
    Thanks in advance!

My primary email account is with my ISP. Through their webpage access to my account, I have it set to forward all mail (without deleting it) to my MobileMe account. I have Mail set to acess my MobileMe account only. This allows me to get all my mail without any of it actually leaving the ISP's mailbox.

  • TS3276 Is it possible to delete mail from your iPhone and it be deleted from all your Apple devices?

I would like to delete mail from all my Apple devices in one go rather than having to access each individually and then read/delete on each, is this possible? I have a Mac Book Pro an iPad mini and an iPhone 5.
Any help would be gratefully received.
    Regards,
    Andy

It depends on the email you use, if you have a provider that only allows POP then it is not possible. If your provider supports Imap or Exchange then it is.
    Who is your email provider?

  • I have deleted "mail" from my computer, how do I get it back?

    Hi
I deleted Mail from my computer, won't even come up on search facility. This was done about a yr ago, but I love Mail, others drive me mad. Can I get it back? My computer is about 6 yrs old and it won't update past 10.6.8. I have recently purchased a time capsule but of course it won't work on anything less than 10.8. Can I fix both of these problems please.
    thanks Helen

    1. Use Pacifist to extract Mail from your Mac OS X 10.6 DVD and then run the Mac OS X 10.6.8 combo updater.
    2. The Time Capsule needs to be set up from a computer running a newer Mac OS X version, or a compatible iOS device. Once done, it can be connected to from a Snow Leopard system.

If you are using iCloud, quit the Mail app if it's open.
    Open System Preferences > iCloud
Deselect Mail then re select it.
Relaunch the Mail app and try deleting mail.
If you aren't using iCloud. with the Mail app open, from the menu bar click Mailbox > Rebuild
    Then try deleting mail.
