Deleting photos in iPhoto 09 and also hard drive

Hi,
I have got an issue with iPhoto 09, and cant find anyway around it!
I import photos into iPhoto only referencing to my original files on my mac hard drive (i.e. un-ticked copy to iphoto library); but when I move them to iphoto trash, and then empty iphoto trash (and accept that "I am sure I want photos to be deleted permanently"), I still have the photos on my mac hard drive.
I noticed that iPhoto library size would increase and decrease when adding and removing the photos, so not sure if I still only add them to iphoto library and then delete them from there (or maybe this increase and decrease is only because of meta-data iphoto makes for the imported photos!)
I am going mental with this issues, save me guys!

I import photos into iPhoto only referencing to my original files on my mac hard drive (i.e. un-ticked copy to iphoto library);
One of the reasons that using a referenced library is not recommended is that deleting photos is more difficult
but when I move them to iphoto trash, and then empty iphoto trash (and accept that "I am sure I want photos to be deleted permanently"), I still have the photos on my mac hard drive.
That is correct - iPhoto does not touch photos outside of the iPhoto library (except to optionally delete photos from cameras after importing - and it is strongly recommended that people do not use this option) - when you unchecked the "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" box you agreed to be totally in charge of the photos being referenced - after you delete from iPhoto you must then delete from the disk where you are referencing them
I noticed that iPhoto library size would increase and decrease when adding and removing the photos, so not sure if I still only add them to iphoto library and then delete them from there (or maybe this increase and decrease is only because of meta-data iphoto makes for the imported photos!)
Even in a referenced mode iPhoto creates a modified version and places it in the iPhoto library modified folder any time a photo is modified including rotation due to camera autorotation being set
That is the most likely cause of the increase of space in the iPhoto library - when you delete in iPhoto and empty the iPhoto trash everything about the photo is deleted

  • How can I archive photos in iPhoto to a hard drive and retain the Album folders and the Events?

How can I archive photos in iPhoto to a hard drive and retain the Album folders and the Events?  I tried to Export the Albums but just transferred the files individually.

If you want to maintain the iPhoto organisation then back up the iPhoto Library.
If you want to export to the Finder, well you need to create a folder for the contents of an Album and expot to that.
If you have an older version of iPhoto: Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events. This feature is built in to iPhoto 11.

  • Does deleting photos remove them from my hard drive?

I have just installed Photoshop Elements 6.
    iphoto then imported 1,172 thumbnails.
Does this mean these pictures are taking up twice as much space as needed by being in the library
and if I delete them will I delete them from the programme?
    thanks,
    Jacquie

    Jacquie
You’ll need to give us more information than this.
    This:
I have just installed Photoshop Elements 6.
    does not cause this:
    iphoto then imported 1,172 thumbnails.
Are you sure these are thumbnails? Where did they come from?
Does this mean these pictures are taking up twice as much space as needed by being in the library
Depends... iPhoto - by default - copies files into the Library. The best way to use iPhoto is to allow it to do this and then remove the other filing system.
and if I delete them will I delete them from the programme?
IF you delete them from iPhoto then you will remove them from the Library and the Hard Drive - but it won’t remove the files in your other filing system.
It might be best if you explain what you want to achieve, then we may be able to help your more concisely.

  • Deleting Tracks from Itunes and from Hard drive

    Hiya
I used to click delete in Itunes and it would remove the track from both Itunes and my hard drive.
However no it only deletes from Itunes, any way to get it back to how it was?
    Cheers

I was having this problem and managed to find a solution.
I had to change my iTunes folder to the same folder that my music was actually located in.
    In iTunes:
Edit -> Preferences... -> Advanced -> (iTunes Music Folder Location) Change..
    Hope this helps some people.

  • Delete photos in iPhoto and External HDD  simultaneously?

Hello. I have 256SSD so its too little for me to save my large photo gallery on laptop. I use for it external HDD.  So i have next problem: when i delete photos in iPhoto they are deleted from only application and it stays in EXT HDD, but I want iPhoto to do it simultaneously, when i delete in iPhoto it should delete in hdd too. In preferances there is no such feature. Couldnt find anything in google about this subject. If there's no built in feature what you suggest me to do to solve this problem? thanks

If a manged library iPhoto will delete the original file that was imported into it.
If a referenced library you will have to delete the "source" file after deleting the photos from the library.
We strongly recommend against a "referenced" library because of the problems it's liable to encounter.

  • How to copy photos from iphoto to windows hard drive

I wanna back up my iphoto to windows hard drive.
    thanks.

I share the Mac iPhotos folder \\COUNTERPWN\Pictures\iPhoto Library.photolibrary\Masters and create a shortcut on my windows desktop. If you want you can use Microsoft Synctoy and run it whenever you want to back them up. Kind of reverse order, instead of going from Mac to Windows to backup, go from Windows to Mac and back again. lol hope that made sense.
Just make sure you have File Sharing selected and Windows Sharing on in prefrence for you iPhoto folder.

  • Deleting photos from iphoto and hard drive

I'm new to macs and have been reading a lot about this subject but I still don't get it.
When I got this new macbook I dumped all my photos from the old PC onto the new hard drive. When I import photos into iPhoto, I left the advanced tab  "copy items to the iPhoto library" unticked. This I understand means I'm running a referenced library. Now when I want to delete a photo from iPhoto, I must delete it from events and then empty the trash. Should I expect the deleted photo to have been removed form the hard drive location from where it was imported originally since I asked iPhoto not to copy the file?

This I understand means I'm running a referenced library.
    Correct.
Now when I want to delete a photo from iPhoto, I must delete it from events and then empty the trash.
Correct. That removes it from iPhoto.
Should I expect the deleted photo to have been removed form the hard drive location from where it was imported originally since I asked iPhoto not to copy the file?
No. When you opted to not copy the file you said, in effect, "I want to do my own file management". So that means you get the files from the camera yourself, decide where to store them yourself and now, must delete them yourself.
It's but one of the reasons experienced users recommend against reference libraries.

  • How to delete photos from iPhoto and hard drive at the same time.

I need to remove some files from my iMac G5 in order to free up some space. I have some photos on my machine that I would like to delete. Is there a setting I can change so that I completely remove a photo from my machine when I delete the iPhoto thumbnail? If not, what is the best way to remove photos from my machine, and not leave thumbnails in iPhoto to photos that no longer exist on my machine etc. I'm using iLife 08 and the most recent version of Leopard on a third generation iMac G5.

To remove file from iPhoto and the HD simply put the files in the iPhoto trash and then go iPhoto Menu -> Empty trash.
This works if you're using iPhoto in the default setting, where the files are copied to the Library on import. If, however, you have a referenced library, you'll need to trash the files in your own folder structure yourself.

  • How to export photos from iPhoto to external hard drive keeping Events structure (files and titles)

    Hello!
I’ve been looking for a Automator application that does this for quite a while now.
Basically I want to have an Automator application that saves a copy of my iPhoto pictures in a folder, inside Finder. Like a backup. Later on, I can save those “folders and files” on my external hard drive.
What I want it to do is this:
    1) Export photos from a selected Album or Event on iPhoto. Using as title: “Event name” – “number” (I mean the number of the file: 1, 2, 3 …)
    2) Save them in a folder in Finder that I want.
    3) Organize the photos in different folders, the same way they are in iPhoto.
The idea I had, was that it would do this automatically every time I launch iPhoto, as if it was synchronizing the photos into that folder.
And then, every time I connect my hard drive, it copies these “real” folders into my hard drive.
Is that possible? If yes, could you help me creating it, or tell me how I can do so myself, or where to download something like it?
Thank you a lot! Kind regards,
    xanacarfran2008

Is this waht you want to do?
It's built into the File Export function of iPhoto 9 (11).  Select what every photos you want and use that option to put each photo in a folder with the Event title it came from as in this test of six randomly picked photos:

  • Hard time copying photos from iphoto to external hard drive

Sorry this is so long, and perhaps unclear, but I would like to copy my photos from my iphoto library onto an external hard drive. The problem is that every time I try and copy the whole library, it finds a picture that crashes the whole effort. I then tried exporting Event by Event to the hard drive, and that worked for a while, but then after about 10 of them it stopped working: about 50 photos into each Event it tells me that it cannot create the volume on the hard drive. Do you think it's a problem with the hard drive?
I have tens of thousands of photos, and this is taking forever, since every way I try to do it starts but never finishes, and I am never sure what actually has transfered.
I also have opened the iphoto library and copied the originals, the modified, AND the data files, but that takes forever too, and I'm never sure if I really have everything. I'd like to copy event by event if possible... and I do not want my iPhoto library to live only on the hard drive, since I use it as a back up and not permanently attached. any ideas?
    Thanks so much!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The problem is that every time I try and copy the whole library, it finds a picture that crashes the whole effort.
Why does the pic do this? Is it a corrupt file? Or is it a missing file?
but then after about 10 of them it stopped working: about 50 photos into each Event it tells me that it cannot create the volume on the hard drive. Do you think it's a problem with the hard drive?
No, that message usually means that iPhoto cannot find the actual photo being copied.
Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). A Finder Window should open with the file selected. Does it?

  • How do I backup photos in iPhoto to external hard drive?

How do I backup iPhoto photos to an external hard drive (not a Time Machine drive)?

    Just the Photos?
    File -> Export...

    The iPhoto Library?
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • Transfer/back-up photos from iPhoto to External Hard Drive

I have an External Hard Drive to which I wish to transfer/back-up my photos (from iPhoto). My External Hard Drive though has documents and photos that are in Microsoft Word. Please help me with the step by step process of transferring/backing-up photos to my ExHD. Can I still keep my MSWord files, or do I need to clear up the whole ExHD? My main concern, is really to free the memory of my MBPro because I have so many photos already. Thanks

Copy your entire iPhoto Library as a unit from the Pictures folder in your Home folder onto the external drive — just drag the iPhoto Library onto the external drive's icon or into its open main window. Do NOT try to copy your photos any other way than this.
After the copy is finished (it may take a while if your library is large), open iPhoto while holding down the Option key, and select the library on the external drive for iphoto to open. If it opens normally and everything seems to be in order, you can delete the iPhoto Library file from your internal drive. Don't forget to empty the trash afterward.
REMEMBER THIS: Now that your iphoto Library exists only on the external drive, it is not backed up! Back it up on a second external hard drive, or sooner or later you will lose it to a hard drive failure. The one sure thing about hard drives, like all other mechanical devices, is that eventually every hard drive will fail. Don't wait for it to happen and then think about the backups you should have been making all along!

  • How can I delete files from iTunes AND my hard drive? It used to be very obvious in iTunes but I no longer see that option.

I used to easily be able to delete songs from my hard drive and library through iTunes but I no longer see that option. Is there a way to do that or a workaround of some kind?

Are these songs in the iTunes media folder shown in iTunes prefs > Advanced?
Only songs in this location will be deleted from the HD when delting from iTunes.
    Also, iTunes prefs > Advanced.
    Click Reset Warnings.
If you are deleting from a playlist, it will only delete from that playlist.
Hold Shift and press Delete to remove from the playlist and from the library.

  • Backup photos from iPhoto to external hard drive for use by PC

    Hi,
I use Time Machine for a general backup of my Mac.  When I transferred my photos from my old PC, they seem to be in a separate folder and not incorporated into iPhoto (though perhaps if I opened them in the iPhoto app, then they automatically transfer; I've not tried that yet). But when I upload new photos (either from my iPhone or a camera) to the Mac, they seem to automatically go into iPhoto and then are incorporated into the iPhoto library (I think).  But the thing is that I would also like to back up ONLY photos (and I have thousands, so can't do it individually) but in a format that I can share with a PC.  I'm guessing if I backup the iPhoto library, that file could not be uploaded onto a PC? I apologize if this is a simple question for more experienced users. Thanks so much!  (Please keep your answers basic, as I'm not as familiar with technical terminology as some of you are.)

    No
    iPhoto has NO crossplatform capability
It is a database photo manager - you import photos to it and use it to manage and view those photos
If you want access to those photos on another platform then you export from iphoto to disk and share those exported photos  --
The iphoto library can not be on a drive formate dot be read by a PC
And if it could the PC would not have any idea what is there
If yu have a current version of iphoto you can export using the subfolder format option of export to create folders matching the event names - Exporting From iPhoto
and I understand you are not familiar with the technical terms - but since that is al we have t communicate with they are critical and unless used correctly we can not communicate - in iPhoto Folders are part of organization and do not hold photos - in iPhoto folders hold either other folders or albums - albums hold photos but they are not a "place" - they are logical links to photos in the library - as are events and photos and special albums such as last "n" months, last import, etc
And note that use of iPhoto is not required - yu can use Image capture to bring photos to disk and the finder or any other application to manage them - if you use iphoto then you MUST learn and understand how it works
