Deleting user in Mavericks didn't delete files

I deleted a user account and selected "Delete the home folder." However, once the user was deleted, I didn't regain any hard drive space. I've emptied the Trash. The user's files must be somewhere on Macintosh HD. But where? I want to delete them!
I created the user account in order to temporarily back up my son's iOS device - music/photos/apps/movies came to about 10-12 gb. But the backup should have been in ~Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup - no? And should have been deleted when I deleted the user account?

Yes, I downloaded the software and I finally see all accounted for files. It all makes sense now. It turns out that my library, system files, and applications all added up to about 20 gigs, thus there was really no hidden files. Thank you for your help. The application worked and it helped point things out clearly to me.

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS: RDS Users are unable to delete files from their desktop

    Hello,
    We are working with Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS. We also implemented User Profile Disks. This is all working fine without problems. The only issue I have is that normal users are unable to delete files from their desktop. They are getting a message:
    you'll need administrator permission to delete this file, with the prompt for administrator access.
    They can edit, copy, rename, cut and paste files. But they cannot delete a file from their desktop.
    I checked the security permissions of the files on the desktop (for example a normal self-created PDF file) and the users are owner and have "Full Control" over the files.
    I checked the file permissions and took a look under "Advanced", selecting the specific domain user and checked the "Advanced Permissions" and the user has the "Delete" option checked. So he should be able to delete the
    file.
    I am guessing this is UPD related issue, or something in GPO. But I already unlinked the GPO objects, that I felt could be the source of this problem, but without results.
    Could someone give me a hint on where to look? It's kinda annoying to users, that they can't delete their own files.

    Hello Bria,
    What you should check first, is the NTFS permissions on the User Profile Disk to begin with. See if the user has full control over the items that are in the UPD.
    Also check the GPO's that are enabled for the user and computer account. You can check that by running: gpresult /h <path>\gpresult.html
    There are two GPO settings that could prevent the user from deleting his/her own items:
    User
    Configuration\\Policies\\Administrative Templates\\Windows Components\\Windows Explorer\
    Hide these specified drives in My Computer
    Prevent access to specified drives in My
    Computer
    There might be other GPO settings, that block deleting items on the UPD, but can't think of any out of my head.
    I can only think NTFS and GPO settings that might prevent the user from deleting items. In my case it was a GPO setting, that I didn't suspect.

  • Problem with Read-only user being able to add and delete files and folders.

    The setup:
    Computer #1
    iMac (intel) running 10.5.5
    File sharing ON
    Sharing folder on external USB drive called 'iTunes' (but not the drive volume itself)
    Users:
    - Everyone = Read Only
    - Admin(me) = Read/write
    - UserA = Read Only (with account PW and username identical to local login for computer below)
    Computer #2
    UserA's iBook G4 running 10.4.11
    When I go to finder>network>iMac>connect it prompts me to login which I do and then select 'iTunes' folder which is visible and mounts successfully. I can see all files, access them all. Life seems great. Then I discover that I can also modify and delete files from the iBook, and create and delete directories.
    I'm new to networking and although I've setup and managed minimal networking tasks on PCs before, this is my first foray into the Mac networking world. Please help.
    What am I doing wrong? What haven't I set?
    Thanks in advance.

    Sorry, I should have clarified this in the first email.
    When I login from the iBook, I am logging in under a read-only user (not as myself, who is admin on the iMac). The user on the iBook has only been given read-only permissions on the iMac yet is able to add and delete files.
    This read-only login/PW however, is the admin account on the iBook, but that shouldn't allow this person to write on the iMac so far as I understand things...right?

  • Deleting files takes hours or doesn't work at all after update to OS X Mavericks

    Hi everyone,
    My problem: I updated to OS X Mavericks the day the update got available but since then, I have a difficulty deleting files.
    Wether it are pictures or music files, sometimes it will delete the file very fast and other times it will either take hours or it won't delete at all (after waiting for hours) and even then to stop the file from going to trash will take a very long time.
    I tried doing this while "Secure Empty Trash" was on and off but it stayed the same.
    Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Is there a keyboard shortcut to delete files without the need to use the mouse? In OS X Mavericks.

    Is there a keyboard shortcut to delete files without the need to use the mouse in OS X Mavericks?

    my question is precise
    Not exactly........
    Cmd-Delete deletes a selected file without a mouse.
    What you want, I think, is a way to select the file (presumably in Finder) without a mouse so that it can be deleted.
    If you open a new Finder window - Cmd-N you can navigate with the up/down arrow keys as you navigate a file is selected , once selected it can be deleted with cmd-delete.
    If while navigateing with the up/dpwn arrow keys you encounter a folder you can delete the folder with cmd-delete or open the folder with the right arrow and proceed to naviagte and delete.

    I am trying to open space in my macbook hard drive, so I deleted files and after emptying the trash bin the amount of Gigs didn't increase, why? Where can I go and delete those files?

    Did you do a secure empty trash? SHIFT COMMAND DELETE, they will be over wriiten. Are you deleting docs as they aren't much space, videos,pictures,music use much more space.
    You can move those fiels to an external "archive" drive to save them then delete them from your internal drive.

  • SMB Users can't move or delete files, Mac users can

    Hi all,
    I'm using Leopard Server with a share point set up with the following details:
    LDAP directory is where the users and groups are stored.
    There is a group called 'techie' which has several users assigned to it.
    Share point called 'Software' is set up with ACL for 'techie' to have Full Control.
    AFP protocol settings are 'inherit permissions from parent'.
    SMB protocol settings are 'Enable oplocks' and 'inherit from parent'.
    I have propagated permissions down to all folders.
    The user can log in from a Mac with Leopard installed, as his own username which belongs to the 'techie' group and he can move files on this share, he can delete then, rename them, whatever he wants (connection is by AFP).
    When connecting using SMB from Windows XP or Vista, using the same username which is part of 'techie', he cannot do this. He gets permission errors etc.
    Anyone have any idea why, or what might cause this? Is it a setting or a bug?
    Regards,
    David.

    I'm having a semilar issue:
    I can login in from Windows XP SP2 but I can't delete files.
    I can write to the directory and read files but I cannot delete them.
    Thanks.

  • Roaming User sync does not work and/or deleted files on desktop restored.

    Hello
    We have a customer with MBP's and a Server 10.6. At the MBP is a local Admin Account configured and all the employees have roaming profiles.
    Sometimes we have the problem that deleted files and folders at a Desktop will be restored after relogin AND it seems that some Adobe Products prevent syncing sometimes if files at Desktop opened.
    Is there any solution for that?

    Same issue here.
    I have BB 9700 and Yahoo! BIS account.  Worked like a charm until about a week ago.
    It was even synchronizing my calendar and mail between BB and Outlook 2010 - never really understood how it managed to do that, but I was very pleased.
    As of lately our telecom administrator spent hours on the phone with AT&T, Yahoo and RIM trying to resolve this problem.  I was told by RIM tech. support that I've got too many messages in the inbox (measly 5000 e-mails) and that BB stops synchronizing after about 800 messages in the inbox, because it is timing out with so many messages to go through.  Sounded like a total BS to me, but I still went ahead and cleaned up my Yahoo inbox and no luck, as I suspected.  I was also told by tech. support that it is due to my using Outlook 2010 Beta2, which is not supported, hence the issue - another ferry tale, IMHO.
    Hopefully, RIM will be able to get us back on track - manually deleting 60 emails every day is extremely annoying.

  • Delete file from folder only (not from list)

    Hi all,
    I've searched a lot and didn't succeed so far, that's why I need your help. In a cloud context, I'm actually creating and uploading files (pdf and/or xml files) "on the go" to sharepoint folders via the SOAP API and this is perfectly working. But
    in a cloud context, I also need to decomission services which is translated into deleting files into Sharepoint.
    That's where it became complicated, because according to the API we cannot delete files if they are not part of a list structure, which is not my case. Is that true ?
    The only info I have when trying to delete a file via the SOAP Api is : its name, its folder, and the endpoint where the folder is. So my question remains simple I guess : is this possible ? If so, how to (a link to the SOAP body would be usefull)
    Thanks a lot
    Regards
    Baptiste

    Hi,
    According to your post, my understanding is that you want to delete file from folder.
    In SharePoint 2010, It is recommended to use Client Object Model to achieve it, the following code snippet for your reference:
    string siteURL = "http://siteurl";
    ClientContext context = new ClientContext(siteURL);
    //specific user
    NetworkCredential credentials = new NetworkCredential("username", "password", "domain");
    context.Credentials = credentials;
    Web web = context.Web;
    context.Load(web);
    context.ExecuteQuery();
    string relativeUrl =web.ServerRelativeUrl +"/DocumentLibraryName/FolderName/FileName";
    File file = web.GetFileByServerRelativeUrl(relativeUrl);
    context.Load(file);
    file.DeleteObject();
    context.ExecuteQuery();
    If you still want to use SOAP API, we can use the UpdateListItems method under Lists web service to achieve it.

  • How to delete files from time machine volume

    Before selling my old MacBook Pro, I had backed up all my data on to an external WD hard drive using Time Machine. I had since switched to a desktop but since I did not have any need for the MacBook Pro files at the time, I had put aside that WD hard drive. Recently, I wanted to clear some space on that external drive to make way for some of my present files. I drilled down in to Backups.backupdb and tried to delete files, but was met with the error "
    An error occurred.The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -5000.) Insufficient access privileges for operation".
    It did prompt me for a username and password before showing that message. I tried both my current user/pass as well as (what I remember to be) my old user/pass on the MacBook Pro. Both presented me with the same error message.
    I also did try to mount the drive as Time Machine on my present system, and then try to enter Time Machine and delete it from there. However, clicking on "Enter Time Machine ... " does nothing.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Linc,
    my back-up data is managed by Time Machine; the actual data is on a second internal Hard Drive with a capacity of 1TB - not partitioned. I am using Time Machine and have access to all data backed up since Mavericks Clean Install but not the data prior to this date.
    When I open the 1TB drive in Finder I can see a folder "Backups.backupdb/Sigi's Mac Pro/ followed by many folders of backup dates going back to 2010-09-20-103441 and up to 2014-02-07-142414 all followed with folder Macintosh HD.  February 7th  2014 was the date of the clean install.
    These Backups are followed by backup date folder 2014-02-08-075554 with a subfolder of MacPro-320GB (this is the name I assigned to my Boot Drive during formatting; I suspect I should have assigned the same name as before ie. Macintosh HD) and 2014-02-11 with a subfolder Macintosh HD, these are the ones I get access to by way of Time Machine > Restore.
    Weird thing is on Febr 11 when I relised my possible mistake and renamed the Bootdrive back to what it was initially ie. Macintosh HD despite this I have access to all backup data since the Clean Install in both folders MacPro-320GB as well as Macintosh HD but not to any data prior to the Clean Install.
    Is there something that Time Machine knows and prevents access or is it simply a matter of renaming the subfolder 2014-02-08-07554/MacPro-320GB to ........./Macintosh HD?
    I like to restore selectively and not everything - It was hard work reinstalling apps that were supposed to be the troublemakers (ref my discussion on Maverick problems) but I now need to get onto data specific to some of these apps as well as other data I may have missed. Long story? Yes and sorry.

  • Flash drive capacity is inaccurate after deleting files from it using my MacBook Pro Mid 2012.

    Hi. I'm hoping someone can help me figure out my flash drive problem.  I'm a new MacBook Pro user and have a Mid 2012 model.  I have a Patriot Supersonic 64gb flash drive that I've been using for a few years and has always worked great. I'm not sure if the use of it is relevant, but if so I use it to load movies on, which I then plug into a box (NBox V3) connected to my tv for my kids to view.  When the flash drive gets full I swap out the old movies with new ones.  I have also used it to transfer movies from my mac to pc.
    A little while ago, after transferring files to my pc, I got a message stating my flash drive was full when I tried to add additional movies to it.  I deleted more than enough files to make room for the new file, but the available capacity never changed, no matter how many files I deleted.  I figured it wasn't compatible going back and forth between my mac and pc, but after talking to support, they said it should be fine and helped me erase the data and reformat it to FAT32. I had the same problem again, so decided to erase the data again and reformat it again to FAT32, but this time not use it in conjunction with my pc. I'm only using it with the tv box now.  I'm now running across the same problem again.  It's full.  I've transferred files from it to create new room, but the available capacity never changes.
    I'm frustrated now b/c I'm not sure where to go from here.  I'm not sure what exactly is the problem. I had to purchase a new external hard drive (WD My Passport for Mac) in order to store files from the flash drive before deleting them b/c I didn't want to use it with my prior external hard drive (Maxtor) since it is used with the pc.  I think that may have been a waste b/c after researching possibilties again today I think it may have something to do with my MacBook Pro ports being USB3 and possibly not compatible with my flash drive, which is a few years old.  I'm really not sure though.  I could go out and buy a brand new flash drive, but I really don't want to spend any more money without really knowing what the real problem is.
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks LowLuster!  With that info I have another questions if that's ok.  First, I'm sure it's formatted to fat32.  I have learned I can't transfer movies over 4gb.  I use an external hard drive for those.  The files are ones I've downloaded from YouTube in the mp4 format and are never over 1gb.  They're all mb in size.
    I didn't realize flash drives had limited writes.  Is there any way to confirm I've reached the limit?  Both times I reformatted it I was able to add back the videos I previously had on it.  I would say there were a hundred or so. Both times I left some "growing room" on the flash drive so I could add more files.  And, both times I was able to continuing adding until I had reached the max capacity.  The problem occured after I tried deleting files to free up space.  Does this make sense with "the amount you have used it" theory?  Does it start to become buggy at that point, or does it just make writes to the drive impossible?
    Thanks

  • Deleting files doesn't free up storage space

    I'm a long-time Mac user with a 2010 MacBook Pro (320GB) now running Mavericks.  About a week ago I screwed up my iTunes and tried to restore from Time Machine.  But I can't because I only have 38GB free and the TM backup is about 40.  So I moved big files over to my attached drive to free up space.  But no matter how much I move (and it's been tens of GB) I still only have 35-38GB free (It varies across this range for no apparent reason).  The storage allocated to Movies and Pictures decreases, but rather than free space increasing, the mysterious category Backups does.  I now have 124GB allocated to Backups.  Yes, I delete the files and empty trash after moving all these files from my system.  And I restart and even wait overnight hoping that the system cleanup routines that run in the dark of night will do their magic.  I have tried several times doing the TM restore of iTunes and each time I get the message that I don't have enough free space.  Can anyone tell me how to break free of this.  I would sure be greatful.  Thanks.

    Hello friends !
    I just found out the way to easily fix the ' actual free space not showing ' problem in Mac OS X 10.9.2.
    1. Turn off your macbook ( i used a macbook ) and remove all external storage devices ( portable hard drive, usb drive, flash drive etc )
    2. Turn on your macbook and wait for ' WELCOME SCREEN SOUND ', and soon after you heard it press and hold ' SHIFT ' key on your keyboard. You must not press the key before welcome screen sound. It should be pressed just after the sound.
    3. It will take you to a white color window with some progress bar at bottom. This may take few minutes.
    4. Macbook will take you to the login page where you need to type your password to enter. Top right corner you will see a text ' Safe Boot Mode ' in RED. If you see so you're doing it right, if no please follow the procedure again.
    5. Then computer will take you to desktop but you will notice that the computer performs very slowly. Then click and open ' TRASH BIN '. You will see all your deleted files are still in your Trash Bin. So click ' EMPTY ' button on top right corner of the window.
    6. You are done ! Right click on the Hard Drive Icon on desktop and then GET INFO. You will be happy to see your empty space back.
    Hope this will help you guys !
    Thanks,
    Dileesha Amarasena.
