Deploy yosemite to mac lab

What is the easiest way to deploy Yosemite to a Mac Lab of about 20 computers? I realize I can download from the App store, but it ***** up all the bandwidth to have them do it at once. It seems like there should be an intranet way to do it, maybe with ARD. The computers are currently at 10.7.

You can't use ARD to install an upgrade. Remember this is a full upgrade to a newer OS and not an update of an existing one.
What some administrators managing a number of macs would use is either:
OS X Server's NetBoot/NetInstall Service (OK but not the best)
OS X Server's NetBoot Service with DeployStudio (recommended)
The choices above may be a step too far for you? An alternative and simpler way would be to simply stop the upgrade after downloading it on one mac and follow the instructions given here:

Use a number of external drives if you have them. Attach as many drives you have to the macs you have and start the upgrade process on each one in turn. Repeat until you're done. This may be the best option for your situation as: (1) saves on bandwidth: (2) once downloaded you have it installed/saved on external media; (3) It's a handy way of quickly reinstalling a clean OS without having to re-download it again.

Setting up a Mac Lab

Hey all,
I'm a long-time windows user who's been employed to create a disk image to be deployed to 19 new iMac computers loaded with Snow Leopard. I understand the process of creating and deploying an image (And have done so successfully) but come to you, the user base, for advice in terms of computer settings.
These will be used by college students only during class time and when there is a lab monitor present. They don't have access to the System Preferences, and unnecessary applications such as Mail and Chess have been removed (Bummer, right?)
Updates will all be entered manually, and Deepfreeze will be installed to ensure that any changes to the computers will be wiped every night.
What computers settings that a new Mac user may not know about should be altered to ensure that the computers are secure but still accessible? And what advice can you give to a new IT Administrator of a Mac lab?

You might try the option in the Security panel of System Preferences to "Require a password to unlock each System Preferences pane" to see if that locks down everything you want. If so, you may be able to configure those student accounts as "standard" accounts.

What happens when you try? Have you enabled the Microsoft software in Parental Controls?
and as admin it has me locked out of the student account so I can't put short cuts in any of their folders.
That could be managed with the "mv" and "cp" commands in a Terminal session.
If each Mac only has one "student" account and the students have no expectation of their work being saved on the Mac between sessions, consider having them use "guest" accounts.

On my Macbook Pro you have to hold the power button down a moment till a little window pops up and asks what you would like to do. Also you can go to:
(  ) Menu > Shut down ...
to shutdown your Mac. Or are you saying that these options do not work?

Deployment error on Mac Client - Office 2011 SP1 would not install

Hi,
I am trying push Service Pack 1 for Office 2011 on mac client but for some reason SCCM does not want to install. Everytime I try to push, it failed with following error. The package starts for few seconds and then throws error below
"Configuration Manager encountered a problem. The software installation or update could not be completed. For more information, contact your help desk"
I have used CMAppUtil to create the package and it was converted to CMMAC format before it deployed to test mac. I have made sure the targeted mac has missing SP1. When I manually tried the DMG for SP1 it works but I did not want to install manually
. Is there anyone have encountered same issue and have resolved it? Or if you have any suggestion where and what to check then it will great!

I am still having issues with pushing office SP1 to mac clients. Rebuilt the CMMAC file, redistributed, re-installed Office 2011 but none of these did any trick. Anyone?

Logic Content Download for Mac Lab

Hi all,
I am sorry I do not have all the tech specs to help. They are new iMacs, running current OS.
I am a music teacher that just got a brand new lab of iMacs and our tech folks installed Logic Pro today. Students need to log-in using their district-issued user name and password. It seems that Logic is asking to download content with each unique user log in. The first download seems to be sounds, the second, larger download is the optional content.
1. Should each user have to download the content? Shouldn't it be available to all users once downloaded to the machine?
2. Any advice on how to best set this up on the machines or links I can give to my tech folks?
I'm the Mac guy, but can not do any of the network or set up work. That has to be handled by our tech dept., all PC. This is the only Mac lab in the district (took 3 years to get it - but getting to teach a Digital Music course because of it!) Supported, but our poor tech folks are just overworked.

Terrence, here is a tip on how to save time downloading all those files over and over again.
You have to know that the installation process is a two step process (similar to installing OSX). In the first step, it downloads a package file (containing all the files) to a hidden location on your drive and when you confirm the installation, It will copy the files in the downloaded package file to the correct destination with the proper authentication. After that, the downloaded package file will be deleted.
The trick is to save the package file(s) before they get deleted and use them as additional inteller files without the need to wait for the download of gigagbytes of data.

Try the advice here. I had the same problem and it worked for me.
You have to delete the "SC Info" folder from /Users/Shared. You will have to use Terminal to enable you to see this folder first. Make sure iTunes is not running when you delete the "SC Info" folder
There is an article from Apple on this here. The "SC Info" folder contains iTunes authorization information.
I did this two weeks ago and iTunes accepted by login. I haven't been asked for my AppleID or password since.

I manage a Mac lab at a university, and recently student figured out an admin. password, and I changed the password. (Please see above)
I would like to know if there’s any freeware or really inexpensive software to manage Mac in a computer lab.
What I’m looking for is something like Deep Freeze.

From what people told me, when you shut down your Mac, Deep Freeze restores everything to what it was. In other words, no matter what kind of changes students make, it always brings Mac back to the initial condition.
If someone can tell me what kind of software is available besides Deep Freeze, it’s really appreciated.

After configuring your workstations how you want, back up one of them to a disk image using SuperDuper!. If some workstation gets compromised again, just wipe it and clone it back from the disk image.
To help make this work it would be better to have your users save their documents on a network drive or in a portable home directory rather than locally on the Mac's internal hard drive. Even better would be to have them bring their own portable media (DVDs, thumb drives, etc) and have them save their own work on them.

GA deployment tools for Mac

We developped an online application in javaFX1.3 and we distributed it as a webstart application for windows, linux and mac 32 bits. Worked Well !
After the eol announcement of 1.3 we started to migrate our application client to javafx2.1. It works well for windows users using the deployment tools you provide.
JavaFX2.1 is GA for MAC as we can use the SDK. But we can't invite mac users to test our application by webstart. Do you know when the JRE will be available with deployment features for mac ? Also, we wondered if the JRE will be available for 32 bits ?

Web Start and Java plugin will be supported in JavaFX 2.2 for Mac and Linux, which will be released as part of Java SE 7u6.The roadmap doesn't mention tight integration of JavaFX with the JDK with concurrent Mac OSX/Linux/Windows support until JDK8 in late 2013.

Note that we do not plan to release a 32-bit version of Java SE / JavaFX on Mac OS XI noted that Chrome is only 32bit for Mac (http://jdk7.java.net/macportpreview/releasenote.html).
Does this mean that a plugin for Chrome on the Mac won't be able to be provided until Chrome release a 64bit version for Mac?

VM's resetting after deploying a configuration in Lab Manager 4.0.4

H iGuys,
Got a problem which i can't figure out. I have imported some VM's into our Lab Manager 4.0.4 setup and put them into the VM templates area (5 VM's in total, 2x windows 2008, 2 x windows 2003, and a unix). I then deploy them to ensure that they have imported ok, and they are fine, the static IP's are still in place as they should be, services start, and everything is fine.
So I then create a fenced configuration with the VM's in it, and deploy that configuration. when the VM's come up the windows 2008/windows 7 VM's run a windows configuration setup, and reboot again. When allthe VM's are up, they have all lost their static IP settings , and have been replaced by DHCP IP's.
I've now tried this with 2 VM sets and it does the same. I don't understand why the VM's work perfectly in the VM Templates, but as soon as i put them into a configuration they change.
Has anyone else seen this we have another setup in the the US on the same version of Lab Manager and the VM's work fine.

so here is the workflow difference you are seeing.
If you go from VM template to Workspace Configuration, it is "more normal" to perform guest customization. You'll also get a new MAC address and UUID in the VM. So be aware there are changes being made, and you'll have to re-configure network at minimum to use the assigned IP with fencing.
HOWEVER ... there is an easier method.
If you have several VMs in a pre-defined config that you want to use over and over ... That's what the Library is for. Made a configuration, save to library.
When you clone from Library to Workspace, Guest Customization is NOT performed as the Configuration is pre-defined and configured. The Fencing will automatically accomodate the existing IP structure and you don't have to modify the VMs at all.
This also saves you from having to build a configuration each time, and you can copy Some or All of a Library item to your workspace.

Unable to Deploy SCEP to MACs

Hi, I really hope someone can help.
CM2012 R2 CU2, PKI.
My Windows SCEP definition deployment is going out to thousands of machines fine from my DP everyday.
I have 60 MACs varying between 10.6 and 10.9 current enrolled with the SCCM client. I can see the 60 MACs in the console, they show as active.
I created the SCEP package on a MAC, added it into ConfigMgr as an Application.
I have tried to push it to a couple of the MAC's and nothing happens.
I previously set up a lab and it works fine. I even copying the SCEP application from the live site to my lab and tried to push it to a test MAC in the lab and the MAC comes up with the prompt stating SCEP is ready to install.
I ran the diag tool on one of the MACs in the live site.
The CCMClient log on a mac has this:

I sorted the issue by changing both the distribution point and management point to intranet and internet. You might need to reinstall the role if you didn't specify the FQDN first time around.

How can I easily set up Mac lab to access windows 2008 server directory user files?

I am wanting to start shifting our school to Apple computers. The problem is that we have already invested significant time and money into windows and we need to run them side-by-side. My initial plan would be to set up an open lab of computers with no users but have some way of allowing students to save their files to a windows directory which would in turn allow them to access the same files from a windows computer. I hope this makes sense and is not an entirely stupid or basic question.
I have logged into my personal directory on our server by hitting Command K and then putting in my user and password. What I would like is to have one item to appear in the shared directory and when selected for it to ask for user and password and go a the required directory.
If anybody has any information that may support the process of the intergration of Pc to Mac for a super low level IT skilled teacher I would greatly appreciate it.

the easiest is to enable fast user switching system preferences-.accounts and require password to wake from sleep in system preferences->security. This way when computer wakes from sleep it gives a password screen with an option to go to login window and switch user.
