Deploying & Managing iPads in K-12 environment?

I'm a systems administrator for my K-12 school district which has 20 locations. We're starting to get more and more ipads every year, and figured it's about time we nail down some sort of system to manage these. Currently teachers are doing their own purchasing and syncing, but we need a standardized system.
Here is what I'm going to suggest to my IT manager and cirriculum department:
-We will Active and deploy a base "image" to all new iPads in central office with Apple Configurator
-We will deploy a Meraki profile to each iPad so we can remotely manage them.
-We will have to log into the app store on each iPad under a general iTunes account that we have setup.
-The base "image" will have all of the apps that they want.
-Users will submit requests for additional app installs, and we will use Meraki to deploy them OTA with the VPP codes we receive.
-Teachers will have to enter the general iTunes account password on every iPad to allow the install of the app on that device.
Does anyone have any suggestions for this? We want to be able to manage VPP codes, devices, etc., and don't have a budget for a more popular MDM provider at the moment. I looked into purchasing an OSX Server, but it looks like the profile management ***** on it since it can't deploy apps properly and isn't a true MDM setup.
The other thought process was having one mobile Macbook that would travel around to each school to allow them to install apps via USB to the devices. (Our district doesn't have money for Macs in each location). Our budget at the moment is $1,000 or less.
Another question I had was in regards to in-app purchases. Can these be done via VPP or will there need to be a credit card associated with the iTunes account in order to purchase those?
Any help is appreciated. I'd rather do this right the first time. I'd love to use the profile management portion of OSX server, but it looks like it's not quite there yet.
Thanks

The problem you might have is easily getting them on wireless at different locations
assuming each location has a different wireless ssid and password
I use apple configurator to deploy latest ios onto the device along with with minimal configuration profiles, just enough to get the device on the wireless, the rest I push out via MDM
apple configurator profiles:
auto join device enrollment profile
enrollment wireless profile
trust cert
I use OSX profile manager
my enrollment wireless is only for getting the IOS devices configured
I then use PM to push out the wireless settings mail, LDAP, vpn etc required for the user/device
with auto join enabled on the wireless profile , once the enrollment wireless is turned off the IOS devices join the pushed wireless. if a user is deleted from the device, the wireless settings are gone also
I can turn the enrollment wireless back on and it'll auto join and I can then push out the new configuration
I have basic needed apps installed, on a master itunes account. staff can use their own itunes accounts for any other apps and they can recommend apps which we look at distributing
IOS 6 seems to have removed the need for user authentication for updating apps
that can be both good and bad, depending on if you need users to stay on a particular app version.
from what I've seen with OSX PM if you push out an app update users don't need a itunes password
they just need to tap yes to accept the update, this is an opt in, if they choose no you can't update the app and have to push it out again
I would think VPP in app purchases would need credit on the itunes account either via credit card or itunes gift card, I use gift card so there is less of a worry about itunes getting hacked
I think the traveling macbook would soon become a pain

  • OIM11gR2 - Deployment Manager - Export Scheduled Task?

    Hello,
I've developed two scheduled tasks and they work as expected.
Now I'm trying to export them via deployment manager to migrate to another environment.
Problem: when I select "Scheduled Task" in the deployment manager wizard my two scheduled tasks are not listed, therefore I can't export them.
Any clue why two scheduled tasks would exist, work, but not be listed in the deployment manager for export?
    Thanks,

  • Managed iPads Wireless App Deployment

We have several hundered managed iPads we connect to one OSX Maveriks computer via a USB sync cart running Apple Configurator we also have a OSX Maveriks server to manage user accounts.
It is time consuming to have to bring the iPads in to the cart to update an app or install a new one via Apple Configurator.  I recently read a whitepapers released in Feb 2014 that depolying apps over the wireless is not possible.  However,  the whitepapers did not have what was needed ro where to go or how tos on getting this working.  Being able to have apps deploy to ipads around the building when they connect to wireless would be a big help.  Where can I go to get this setup?  All I cna find are whitepapers saying it can be done now,  not system requirements and how to go about doing it.
Does this service use a particular IP port?  If so I'd need to know all the tech specs this uses over the wireless to get it working.

See if there is something here that helps....

  • Deployment manager between different OIM versions

    Hi everyone
We installed OIM version 9.1.0.1 in our development environment but the customer want to install version 9.1.0.2 on the UAT environment. Is it safe to copy the customization between the 2 different verions using deployment manager?
    Thanks

    Hi,
As per my knowledge in OIM, There are few things which you can go for export-improt in same version:
    1. Email Template
    2. UDFs
    3. Adapters.
Process Form, Process Definitions, User Groups, Access Policies are not advisable to export/import in the same version alos if you have done any customization from your end if you are using OOTB you can do it.
As you are going the change the OIM version, I will suggest you first export/import only three things as mentioned above, rest thing you try to recreate over there.

  • Content Distributor, deployment Manager and resource services are dead

    Hi,
I am using Fast ESP 5.3 product single node in a window environment. Recently during a SAM patch installation I have restarted ESP and post that I have found below three services status as N/A in System Overview. Even  the server was restarted
due to window patching. As these services are down I am unable to create any collection neither am I able to publish any search profile.
    Content Distributor
    deployment Manager
    and resource services
Strangely in nctrl status all services are displayed as Running.
These are the work around I have tried:
    killed processes from Task manager
    Restarted ESP
So is there any possible way to bring these services up.
    With Regards,

With reboot of the server the issue got resolved....

  • Application deployment manager process

Can someone brief me about the ADM in siebel 8.0?
If possible explain how to export LOV's using LOV in siebel 8

The Application Deployment Manager Guide has an introduction to the component.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B40099_02/books/AppDeployMgr/AppDeployMgrTOC.html
In brief, yes, it will let you migrate LOVs from one environment to another, along with many other non-repository configuration items.
We tried to use it in 7.8, but it was lacking in many places (Hierarchical LOVs were a pain, for one) but I hear things are much improved in 8.

  • Managing iPads without VPP not 1 on 1

We are in a Northern Canadian Aboriginal Fly-in community with a 300 student population K-12 school with about 2 Mb/s bandwidth and no cellphone service yet.
I first need to manage a cart of 30 iPad 2s at iOS 5 but freely upgradable to iOS 6.
We are NOT in a 1:1 situation as I cover pretty much grade 1 to 9, optionally to grade 12, going from class to class on a 40 minutes stop per class getting myself, students, teachers and assistants a first run with the iPad Cart, manned with a projector.
Our school board has not yet jumped onto the Volume Purchase Program. It can take some time, so i'm chasing free, no in-app purchase apps until we switch to VPP.
1- Without VPP, Am I stuck NOT USING Apple Configurator and sticking to iTunes in a manual type of management?
2- What can Mac OS X Server, Profile Manager, ARD, Automator or anything else, do for me in terms of iOS hardening and App and Data management automation?
3-  Can I do Over-The-Air changes to the iPads from the server (And How) ?
    Thanks

I would think you could signup for the VPP and not spend any money.

  • Connection information for Deployment Manager

    Happy Friday to all
    Environment:
OWB 10g Client on Windows XP Professional
    Repository - 9.2.0.4 on UNIX (AIX 5.2)
    Runtime (1) - 9.2.0.4 on UNIX (AIX 5.2)
    Runtime (2) - 9.2.0.4 on UNIX (AIX 5.2)
    Target - 9.2.0.4 on UNIX (AIX 5.2)
I'm having a 'little' trouble getting my 2nd deployment location to work.
1- When I first connect to the Runtime through Deployment Manager I am prompted for 'Connect As User' and its password. What user is it looking for?
    a) Runtime User (rtu)
    b) Runtime Repository Owner (rtr)
    c) Some UNIX user
    d) Some other Oracle database user
2- When I'm trying to Register a location I am prompted for a Schema Name, Password and Service Name. What schema name does this refer to?
    a) Runtime user (rtu)
    b) Runtime Repository Owner (rtr)
    c) Target schema
3- I was able to deploy a directory and an external table to the second runtime environment. However, when I try to deploy a mapping I get the following error:
RPE-01012: Cannot deploy to the target location because it is owned by a different runtime platform.
Where is the conflict? I have connected to the correct Runtime environment via the Deployment Manager but maybe I'm using the wrong connection information as described above.
This whole connection 'thing' is very confusing and the documentation is pretty weak in that area.
    Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Thanks for all the effort in supporting this site. It is very very useful!

    Thanks for the quick response.
In my case I have the same schema (location) acting as a source and target. It is not my primary target but nonetheless I have the need to truncate and insert into tables in that schema.
Do I need to set up two (2) different locations because I use the same one for both a source and target???
I use my primary location for both a source and target in other mappings so I don't see that there's a difference.
What, exactly, is the error message I'm getting (RPE-01012 : Cannot deploy to the target location because it is owned by a different runtime platform.) telling me?
Who is it that 'owns' the runtime platform?
I only have one (1) runtime platform on that server although I do have my primary runtime platform on another server. Both runtime environments use the same schema name (OWB_RTR in my case), they have different target schemas and are on different servers.
I don't understand where the confusion is except in my own mind! ;-)>
    Many thanks for the assistance.

  • Deploy Mappings WIthout Deployment manager.

    Hi
I am trying to deploy mappings created in test environment to production environment without using OWB 10.1 client deployment manager. Kindly help if it’s possible.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Regards
    AnuragS

    Hi,
Then you need to go for OMBPLUS scripting route .
Create a deploy action for your mapping(s) and then use OMBDEPLOY to deploy the same .
    Thanks,

    Stefan,
Possibly dumb question but are your installers built for the appropriate architecture (32-, 64-bit)? Adobe is pretty picky about that with CC.

  • Issue while opening deployment manager

    Hi Experts,
I am working on OIM 11gR2, When i try to open the Deployment manager (export) link from the sysadmin console, The entire application shuts down immediately. I do not see anyting on logs for this problem.
Is anybody facing this kind of issue.
    Please help!!!

    try below
    1. In case 'Database Name' is changed and if you did not change the same in oim-config.xml
2.Try reinstalling the NexaWeb in that case and see if it helps
    - Go to Weblogic Admin Console -> Deployments
    - Stop/Delete the Nexaweb
    - Deploy it back from location IAM_HOME\server\apps\Nexaweb.ear
If you don't find nexaweb under deployments deploy it manually using Weblogic console from above path

  • How to update managed iPads (COMPLETE)

Here is my very short summary of what needs to be done to update the apps and iOS on managed iPads in the mobile cart. As you can see, this is very brief and concise, and you can do the update process in just a few minutes each day.
Ha hah ha, that was a good joke, eh?
No, the truth is that you must be prepared to be frustrated and annoyed, wasting possibly hours of your time on this learning the process, and finding this all to be way too complicated and difficult and annoying.
Updating the supervised iPads one at a time, is only just slightly less difficult than updating all of them, all at once, in parallel using the USB hubs in the cart.
Sorry, but there doesn't seem to be any simpler way to do this. This is what all schools that use managed iPads have to deal with.
The iMac admin account is "@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@"
I have set the admin account password to "###########"
Please inform me of any password changes.
    1. System software / iTunes / QuickTime update:
Turn on Mac, logon as administrator
Go to the Apple menu (top left corner)
    Choose "Software update…"
Install any updates it finds, restart the computer if needed.
    2. Apple Configurator (iPad manager) update
Go to the Apple menu (top left corner)
    Choose "App Store…"
Look across top of window, far right says "Updates"
If there is a number next to it, click on Update, then click the Update button.
    App Store update account: @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
    Password: #######################
    Restart computer if needed.
    3. Updates for iPad Apps
On the dock (move mouse to bottom center of screen)
    Run iTunes
Select Library -> Apps on left side
In dark gray band below app icons, look for a message like "Updates available"
If yes, click arrow next to updates message.
Top right of window, select "Download all free updates"
    Quit iTunes
    4. Updates for iPad iOS (operating system)
On the dock (move mouse to bottom center of screen)
    Run Apple Configurator
At top of window choose Supervise
In left column select "Cart - 30 iPads"
"All iPads (xx)" should be shown in middle column
In right column "Settings" should be highlighted already next to iOS.
    Click button "Check for Update"
    5. Updates for Apple Configurator iPad Apps
(Should do this section if any updates were downloaded in iTunes)
    Continuing from section #4 above:
In right column click on "Apps"
Click on + at bottom of Apps list. A file browser window appears.
At top of file browser window, 4th item from left should be selected, for "List view with details"
The "Date modified" column should be highlighted. If not, click on  it.
Under "Mobile Applications" click on top program name in list, note in modified column it says "Today"
Scroll down until you find the last item updated "Today"
Hold down the Shift key and click on the last item. That and everything above is now selected.
    Click Open button on window
    Logon with management account:
    U: **************************
    P: ##########################
In bottom left corner it will say "Updating…"
For every program that was updated, a window will pop up that says "Item exists, do you want to replace it?" and you have to keep clicking Update over and over and over until all the Updates are done.
The Update button moves around depending on window size, so you can't just leave the mouse in one spot to hit all the Replace buttons.
Click the Apply button at the bottom center of the Apple Configurator window
    6. Updating all the supervised iPads at once
You are now ready to connect the iPads and Apple Configurator will automatically install the latest iOS version, and the latest iPad app versions.
If Apple Configurator is not already running:
    - On the dock (move mouse to bottom center of screen)
    - Run Apple Configurator
    - At top of window choose Supervise
    - In left column select "Cart - 30 iPads"
If the iPad cart has cable trays that can slide, open the back of the cart so they are able to slide backwards. Otherwise if not, make sure there is enough slack to plug in an iPad and insert it backwards with the cable and plug to the rear.
Flip all the iPads over in the cart, so the "top edge" with the power button is exposed. This allows you to power on the iPads during the update, explained in the section below.
On the back of the cart, unplug all iPad cords from the white Apple power bricks, and plug into open ports on the USB hubs
Plug the USB cable from the cart into the back of the iMac
Wait for the iPads to be recognized by the iMac, about a minute or so. They should start to automatically update.
It will take a while for each iPad to download any iOS updates and install apps, maybe 30-45 minutes.
!! UPDATE CAN FAIL IF YOU AREN'T VIGILANT !!
When you see an iPad listed as "restoring backup" (after about 30 minutes), you must check the iPad to see if its screen is black. If it is black, you must reach over and press the power button for that iPad about 2-3 seconds, or the restore will FAIL.
You have to sit there and periodically watch for any iPad that says it is "restoring backup". The iPad shows a spinning timer, then the Apple logo, and the screen goes black. This is where you must manually turn on the iPad, or the process fails and you will have to start over for that iPad.
You have a couple minutes to turn on the iPad after it says "restoring backup", but there is no notification at all when Apple Configurator shifts from "Installing Apps" (30+ min) to "Restoring Backup". So you just have to sit there, and wait, and watch.
Once all the iPads have been updated, you need to unplug all of them from the USB hubs and back into the Apple charging bricks. This is because the USB hubs shut down and will not charge the iPads, if they are not always connected to the iMac, which is in a stationary location in the elementary library.
    7. Dealing with passcodes on iPads
Some iPads will inexplicably fail to update, with error messages such as "could not apply policy". These usually have passcodes installed by students.
There is no way to simply remove the passcode and keep on using the iPad. It is necessary to completely erase the device and all data on it, reinstalling the operating system and all programs.
There is no way to disable the passcode or prevent students from setting a passcode.
A partial solution is for me to set a passcode, set the device auto-lock time to never, and staff must unlock the iPads themselves before handing the devices out to students. Students must not be told this passcode, or they can again change it and lock the device.
So, to remove a passcode, first look at the device in the supervised group list. Select it and copy the name of the device to the clipboard, or write it down.
Right click on the device and choose Unsupervise. It will be erased and rebooted, which takes about 30 minutes. It then appears on the leftmost Prepare section for setting up new devices.
Set this device to be Supervised, enter the name you copied previously, tell it to update the iOS, apply the Student security profile, and use the most recent backup (I've added dates to the backup names).
On the Apps tab, select all apps (checkmark next to everything).
    Click Apply
Setting up for supervision takes an additional 30-45 minutes, and you will need to wait for it to say "restoring backup", at which point you need to manually power on the iPad as discussed previously, or this whole process fails and you will have to start over.
Yep, that's all it takes! As you can see, it should be a piece of cake to learn to do this, right?

  • Error while Importing ResourceObject  xml file in Deployment Manager

    Hi Everyone,
I am getting this error while doing Import of HRPeopleSoftResourceObjects.xml ( A Resource Object xml file) in Deployment Manager. I am doing this step for Authoritative(Trusted Source) Reconciliation.
Error Says:- Attribute not present in EntityDefination of User :: ExpectedReturnDate.
ExpectedReturnDate is a UDF (Customize) field. I did Metadata and Sandbox import for this field to create this attribute in OIM. I can see this attribute on User Details screen as well as in User Table in OIM. So, ideally this error should not popup. I have to do this import for Reconciliation.
I pulled and checked all the xml files like(UserEO.xml.xml, userEO.xml.xml, userVO.xml, UserVO.xml.xml) from oracle.iam.console.identity.self-service.ear_V2.0_metadata1 and found ExpectedReturnDate field is available.
I am using: OIM Version - Oracle 11g Release 2
    Database version - 11.2.0
    Weblogic version - 10.3
Please let me know how to resolve this error.
    Appreciate your response and support!
    Warm Regards

    Appreciate your response Kevin!
I saw your response today. What you have suggested in your post make perfect sense to me.
Yesterday, I was able to create Reconciliation profile successfully. No idea how it worked so, didn't updated my post.
I tried to re-import the UDF, noticed ExpectedReturnDate attribute has little icon in fornt of it on deployment manager screen which says on mouse over "new field". No idea why as I didn't delete it from anywhere, perhaps it didn't get imported properly previously. I stepped ahead and clicked the import button on deployment manager but failed as it was throwing an exception which says udf_usr_expectedReturnDate is available in usr table. That makes sense to me as this column got created in usr table in OIM because of previous import and I didn't delete it either. This raised couple of doubts more as, along with this attribute there were other attributes in the same metadata xml file which were part of previous import and their respective columns were already created in usr table. Then why message poped-up for this field in particular? Anyway I went ahead with the import process.
Now I stopped all the server (Admin, SOA and OIM) and restarted them again and performed the same steps as mentioned above and this time it worked as expected. UDF file got imported successfully.
After this I went to Design Console verified all the fields and created the Reconciliation Profile. I checked OIM database and found RA_ProfileName recon tables got created.
As per your comment, Today I checked the RECON_USER_OLDSTATE table but this table is empty.
Still I have couple of doubts, if Reconciliation Profile got created it should create the xml file under metadata direcectory(in my case path should be: /apps/Oracle/Middleware/Oracle_IDM1/server/metadata/db). Please correct me if I am wrong? I hope it should be physical file not a logical file.
Once again thanks for your response!
    Warm Regards
