Design View Replacement Found

If like me you want to develop Flex applications with a Design View so you can actually see what you're doing as you code, check out IntelliJ and the Flash Designer UI plugin. It supports Flex 4.8+ and features a design view that runs in an AIR application. For me this is better than Flash Builder's previous design view since it now means I can code on one monitor and see the changes (in real-time too!!) in the design view app on my other monitor - essentially reducing development time.

We haven't yet made the switch since we have no plans to use the new SDKs just yet. However today I found a way to enable Design View with the new SDKs, fully operational in Flash Builder 4.6. I had to remove the new SDKs from Flash Builder first, then edit the flex-sdk-description.xml file located in the SDK folder, changing the "version" value to "4.6.0". Then I re-added the SDK into Flash Builder and changed my existing project to the new SDK, and hey I had a fully operational Design View. I tried this with Flex SDK 4.9 and it works great. Worth a try if you want to be able to design applications using the latest SDKs.

Resetting is the best way to restore what you lost.

  • What is the replacement for design view in in flex builder 4.7 for cs extension builder?

Because design view is not available in flash builder than what is the use of extension builder in UI designing now we have to do design UI with xml which is very time consuming and boring  if there is any replacemnt for it than please help me .1 more thing i want to know is that when i make new default project in extension builder(flash builder 4.6) than it also not able to load design mode errror is
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder 4.6\eclipse\plugins\com.adobe.cside.libsinstaller_2.0.0.4-33034\archive\cslibs\2.0\4.5\re lease\apedelta.swc- not respondingSWC file failed to load. Any component dependent on this SWC file will not be displayed in the Design Mode. The SWC may have failed to load because of:
    *  Incompatible definitions caused by usage of a different SDK version
    *  Missing referred class definitions

I have researched this quite considerably and my understanding is that Adobe have no intention of supporting Design View any more for Extension Builder.  In my opinion a very disappointing decision and one that is hard to comprehend.
The best workaround I can find is to create the majority of your design in a parallel, non Extension Builder, project and then convert/import your design into your Extension.  This is by no means as satisfactory as having Design View for the Extension you are writing but it is better than simply creating your layout by guess work/trial and error.
Although this has not been announced by Adobe, I have a suspicion that the reason they have decided not to put any further resources into fixing Design View is that Extension Builder as we know it is going to be abandoned soon, probably replaced with an HTML5/JavaScript method of building extensions.  My concern with this is that, other than wanting reassurances that there will be backward compatibility support for old extensions, There will not be a way of compiling an extension in a way that prevents people from seeing your code.
This is all speculation and I guess we will have to wait and see what happens.  Hope this has helped.

  • When I insert a format extension the design view disappears?

    Hi,
I'm just following one of the tutorial from Lynda.com and found that when I change the format of a variable from a record set something very odd happens ... certainly not what happens in the tutorial.
Okay .. here is what I'm doing ...
I've installed the extension 'PHP Numeric Formats' from the Adobe Exchange and restart DWeaver.
I select the price variable {rsTitles.price} go to Bindings and change the format to the USDollar and as soon as the format is inserted all the images, formatting and text disappears in the design view and is replaced by a number of PHP icons.
Going to Live mode it is displaying ok ... but not being able to see what's going on in the design view is going to limit things somewhat.
All the other formats from the 'PHP Numeric Formats' have the same effect.
I also installed 'PHP Server Formats' (latest version from the programmers website) and the date format works ok .. but doesn't seem to have any currency options.
So first question is: Why is the above problem happening ... Does this happen to anyone else?
2nd question is: May you know of a better extension for currency and numeric formats. that doesn't cause the design view to disappear?
Many thanks for your time and I would really appreciate any help.
    Best wishes,
    Nick
I've attached some screenshots of the problem

    Hi,
Doh! I've just realised what is happening ... my computer restarted but the WampServer (local.host) was not restarted and was not running at the time of applying the extensions. Once it is up and running all the currencies formats work just fine .... as I said before ... doh!
If your looking for formating for currency in an exstension ... I've been using 'FX PHP Formats' avaliable for download free here after registering:

    Cheers,
    Nick

  • Protecting code from design view?

Can you configure the tag pattern that tells Dreamweaver to
"leave this code alone in design view"?
Dreamweaver does a good job of respecting code blocks (PHP,
ASP, whatever) in design mode. However, we're going to have some
people develop Smarty templates with Dreamweaver, so I need to
specify the tag pattern of stuff that should only be accessible in
    code view.
    Is this possible?

I found out how to do this. Open
    "configuration/ThirdPartyTags/Tags.xml". Add a new "directive_spec"
tag there, defining the start and end tags. I also specified an
icon to replace the code in design view.
    Works beautifully.

  • DreamWeaver CS3 Crashing in Design View

Hi, Dreamweaver CS3 is crashing when try to view a page in
design view. It happens when I have links to images that are stored
on a web server that is currently unavailable. As soon as the web
server is running again there are no problems. If open the page in
code view, it works fine but as soon as I click on design view it
hangs. Has anyone else come across this problem? Thanks for your
    help.

    Ah, I see now.
Are you using the Live Data view or is that turned off?
Well, after searching these forums, I have found this KB
    article:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb401608&sliceId=2
It is a known issue when using remote files. If you can maybe
the answer right now would be to develop the page with local file
paths and do a search and replace to add in the remote path before
you save the final version. Wish there was a solution, hopefully a
patch will be released soon because the thread I found was back
from April of this year and it only affects Intel Macs.

  • .clearfix css doesnt render in DW Design View

I have used the css .clearfix code in my site to enable two
divs to clear a floated element. It works fine in browsers like
IE6, IE7, FF, Safari, etc. But the clearfix code doesnt make the
divs clear when I am designing in Dreamweavers Design View. They do
not clear. I have to use <br style="clear:both;"/> after the
two divs to make them clear in Design View.
The problem is that actually adding <br
style="clear:both"/> after the two divs in DW renders the
.clearfix solution redundant as it has the same effect of clearing
    the float.
Basically Im saying its a shame that the excellent .clearfix
code doesnt render in Desing View. Or does anyone know how to make
it render in Design View without using the <br style... code?
    .clearfix:after {
    content:".";
    display:block;
    height:0;
    clear:both;
    visibility:hidden;
    .clearfix {display:inline-block;}
/* Hide from IE Mac \*/
    .clearfix {display:block;}
/* End hide from IE Mac */

Hi there, in case anybody comes across this issue again, I had the same prob, compounded by 'edge case' situations where the .clearfix class wasn't enough. A solution (not ideal, but it does solve the problem) can be found here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/130568#130568
It involves using a float clearance CSS technique, and then adding markup to enforce clearance in Design Mode, as suggested by Billy - the differnce is that you also set line-height and height styles to 0px on the added markup. I know adding markup is hardly ideal, but I added an alt="PLACEHOLDER" attribute to my markup clearance div (or <br /> in Billy's case), so I could 1) search and replace it out it later and 2) generate a validation error so I definately wouldn't miss it.

  • Design view not displaying

    Hi there
I am very new to Dreamweaver working on an existing website.
I have one page that is giving me problems. The web page itself is displaying just fine.
In Dreamweaver, I am viewing with a split page, code on top and design on the bottom.
The design page is not showing up. The code is there, the web page is there, its just I can't see anything in the design section, except the top and side headers which are fixed in place.
If I switch to design only view, its the same.
Every other page is fine - I can see code and design - its just this one.
    It's Dreamweaver 8.
    Thanks
    Jamie

Ok I just found the advanced icons and now have ny double >> button. So I have pasted in text, highted it all and selected hopefully it is plain syntax highlighting.
If you go to the webpage - http://unicredit.com.au/loans/home.html
There is the heading “No Home Loan Set Up fees: til March31.”
Then there is a bunch of copy and the circular pics start.
All that copy in between the heading and the circular pics is not in my design view.
ie my design view shows the heading “No Home Loan Set Up fees: til March31” and then the circular pics.
The web page shows it all, the code view shows it all, it’s just the design view that doesn’t.

  • What is it about this markup that breaks DW CS3 Design View Editing?

    Folks:
I'm attaching very simple --and apparently completely valid-- markup that generates the text shown between the markers below:
    ------------start----------------
yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda badda.
    ------------end----------------
As you can see by examining the file, it contains only an span enclosing text and spaces, and some following breaks.  This file passes DW validation: no errors or warnings.
If I open this file in DW CS3 Design View, select and delete the last word, "badda", the entire text --every "yadda"--  is also deleted.  All that text is really gone -- if I immediately save the file and re-open it, there is no text content at all, just the span pair,  spaces, and the trailing breaks.  This is completely repeatable.
When you edit this file, do you get the same result?
The attached file is a cut-down, simplified version of a production file that exhibits this issue. (That file also passes validation.)   When I delete single  words,  entire content paragraphs disappear.   So this is not just a point of curiosity.  I need to figure out how to fix the production code and avoid this problem in the future.
What is it about the attached markup that causes this issue?  I've fooled around with this code quite a bit and the best I can figure out is that DW is confused when both the start- and end- span tags are followed immediately by a line break.  Inserting a space in either place makes the issue go away.   But the production code doesn't have any occurances of this pattern. And, anyway, line-breaks have no significance to html, just for source-code formatting, right?
Am I missing something incredibly obvious?
    TIA
    hen3ry

    Nancy O:
Thank you for your response, which gave me  valuable clues to understanding the issues.   (Specifically, it led me to re-read and understand better the nitty-gritty of the HTML4 specs,  section 7, "The global structure of an HTML Document", especially 7.5.1 The BODY element.)
I believe you are saying --in sum--  that to be reliably edited in DW, each source file must comprise a syntactically correct and complete HTML Document.
I am attaching a second file, "badcode2.html", modified substantially as you suggest.  It passes the DW validator, the validator.w3.org test, and the www.totalvalidator.com test.    No errors or warnings.
I do this:   Launch DW, open this file, choose Design View if necessary, select the final word of text, "badda", and activate Edit-->Cut (or Delete).   As before, all the other text is deleted as well. This is repeatable.
It seems to me this sample code satisfies your general principle.  Could I be misapplying the three validation tests?  Or that passing these tests does not assure the document  is syntactically correct and complete?   Can you recommend other tests?
I'd like to add the following two points as a matter of background and a bit of niggling:
--I'm aware  that complete HTML pages must contain <html> , <head>,  and <body> tags, although the HTML4 specification seems to say <body> tags are optional.   All my production pages, as served, contain these tags.   My underlying design is a php template with individual content files incorporated by inclusion.   There may be only one set of <html> , <head>,  and <body> in  a  page. The  "outer" template code provides these tags, and individual content files cannot contain a nested set -- so they must be "bare" markup.   Is DW able to support this design, in which "bare markup" files are seemingly unavoidable?    Is there a mechanism analogous to DW Design-Time Style Sheets to provide virtual existence of these tags so "bare markup" files can be successfully edited?  I've looked for such a mechanism but not found one.    Or some completely different method?
--You specify the inclusion of <p> or <h1> tags within the  body.    Is there some special significance of <p> or <h1>  with respect to stable editing in DW?  My reading of the HTML4 spec indicates that a single block element is the minimal requirement for body content. Either of these tags qualify, right?   But so does <div>, and that's what I use in my current example.    Am I misunderstanding something?
Bottom line,  I'm looking for a pragmatic solution for my problem:   Once in a while, among hundreds of  structurally similar "bare markup" pages I edit in DW without any problem,  I lose data.   If inserting an additional tag into all my content include files eliminates these occasional problems, I'm  willing to do that, as long as:  (1) There is an arguable technical basis for the addition,  (2) the added tag does not  produce anything visible on the served page, and (3) the validators don't flag the extra tag.
    Suggestions, please!
    Thanks,
    hen3ry

Dreamweaver is pretty good these days at showing the page in Design View how it will be viewed when online. HOWEVER having said that it does largely depend on the way you write the css.
I guess for Dreamweaver it's impossible for it to show every concievable way you can write css correctly. Unfortuantely if your css is not compatible with what Dreamweaver likes it won't make a great job of rendering the site correctly in Design View, that's always been the case.
The css is not wrong but I've seen many display issues in Dreameaver Design View caused as a direct result of the css being overly complex to crack simple presentation. I guess it's in the lap of the gods if you are fortunate enough to have found the way to write css that Dreamweaver likes.

  • My pages are missing in design view ?? but not in live view?

I am using win 7 & DW5.  I have not used DW% for more than a week.  I need to update today and there is no page to work with? I don't know what to do?  [email protected]

I have two sites up and running ... www.latheart.com and ... svwoodturners.org.  Both are ok. This past weekl I installed chrome !@#$%^!  didnot like it so I uninstalled it !@#$%^&!  What a mess that caused. Some of the reg files had to be rewritten in the regesters also my photos also do not open automatically any more. The fonts were changed in almost everything.  I think I have fixed most everything and then I found this problem with DW5.  I do not know it that is related or how the htmls could even be affected. But both of my sites have the same issue.  They will not dysplay in design view ..... Thanks for any help or suggestions. Rich Johnson San Jose Ca.
I don't know how to enter the code here ...  I have cut and pasted and it creats the page with out the photos.

  • JSP Design view not working in JDeveloper 10.1.3.3

    Hi,
The problem I have is that my JSPs all throw a class not found error in design view when I load them. The problem is related to the useBean tag (see error example).
    Error exercising tag : jsp:useBean
    java.lang.Exception: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com......client.jsp.testclass
The application is divided into a web project, an EJB project, and a server classes project. The JSPs are in the web project and the problem classes are in the server classes project. I'm limited to source view editing of JSPs due to this and the problem is only in the IDE, deployment of the code to the server is fine.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Kaitain

I think they are but I could be mistaken, as the libraries list for the web project shows the server classes as a library.

  • Design view not showing true design

I'm using Dreamweaver CS3, and have an issue with design
    view.
I was editing the content of a page in design view, applying
styles from my main.css, when the page I was working on suddenly
lost all its styles, including heading & paragraph styles, and
    placement of most div tags.
My header and the div tags inside that are still visible, as
is the side navigation, although the background image for the side
navigation is not. It seems to be all my editable regions that have
    decided not to show correctly.
I've checked other pages and templates based on the main.css,
and they all appear to have the same problem.
    The good news:
    1. The CSS Styles inspector on each page shows it is attached
to the main.css, but lists only three styles under that style
sheet, all of which are named 'td img'.
    2. The main.css itself looks fine. All my styles are still
    there.
    3. When I preview my site in a browser, it looks as it
should, so presumably it IS still attached to the style sheet, it's
just not showing properly when I'm working on it.
Any clues as to what's going on?
As I'm sure everyone says, this is kind of urgent, so any
help anyone can offer will be very gratefully received!
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!
EDIT: I've been playing around with previewing the site in a
browser again, and have encountered another issue, which may be
related. I can preview a preliminary page, but all my links take me
to a 'this page cannot be found' error message. I was pretty sure
it wasn't doing this when I first encountered the problem with
design view, but I could be mistaken. Has something happened to the
internal links on my site, perhaps?

In the View menu go to Style Rendering. Make sure Display
    Styles is checked.

  • Design View Nonworkable - Fine in Browsers and Validation

    Hi!
I have year old sites and new sites using CSS and server side
includes (both php and asp) that are nonworkable in design view in
Dreamweaver CS3. Sites were fine in Macromedia 8 but not now. My
very old sites are fine - they are straight HTML sites.
I have read several past posts on this problem and ruled out
many of the solutions for my case. My pages are clean in WC3
validation (meaning no errors) - since this is what Adobe
Dreamweaver support was concerned about when I took out an support
incident with them. The sites display fine in 6 browsers, but not
in DW CS3 now that I upgraded. This makes no sense.
I see some answers that CS3 is not as tolerant as before of
bad coding. This is not the issue, it is validated and displaying
    across browsers fine.
I and my staff are crippled working on these sites now that
we have all upgraded to CS3 with the way they are displaying.
Here are some pages that I am having problems with:
    http://www.scandpg.org/meeting_event.php
    http://www.eatrightny.org/about/about_site.php
    http://www.eatrightmissouri.org/jobs/index.asp
(site workign on now, not live)
    http://www.hada.com/about/board.asp
I have found if I uncheck server side includes in preferences
for invisible elements I can work on the content better, but this
is a workaround but does not resolve the fact that DW is not
displaying coding in view correctly and still leaves some issues
    when developing a site.
Thanks for your help in shedding light on this as I may be
off. My conclusions are drawn from a support incident/ticket with
Adobe on this very same thing, looking at the DW forum postings
over the last six months on this and my own recent experiences.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Healthy regards,
    Teresa

If you want to work in DW, then you must adopt this approach
    to the use of
    server-side includes:
    > The parent file is the ONLY one that can contain
    <html>, <head>, or <body>
    > tags.
    > The include files cannot contain those tags.
    > The final assembled page must therefore only contain one
    instance of each
    > with its associated closing tag.
That seems to be your largest problem.

  • Design View - Can't believe it's gone!

I have been using Flash Builder since it was Flex Builder. Actually, since flex was introduced. Once of the best features of Flash Builder over other IDE's was the ability to use a GUI to layout elements on the page. I just downloaded the trial version on Flash Builder 4.7 to see all of the new features and start playing with it, and that's when I noticed that there was NO Source/Design tabs. At first, I thought there must be a check mark somewhere to turn them on. After I could not find any settings that enabled the Design Veiw, I did a search on Google, and found out that it has been removed.
REALLY! OK. I have read peoples comments saying that if you are a Real programmer, you don't need it. Well, if I am a real driver, I really don't need leather seats and Air Conditioning either. The Design View was what set Flash Builder apart from other IDE's! And you got rid of it!?
Well, this is one developer who will not be upgrading to 4.7, when I could just use a free IDE to get the same results. Adobe, if you really care about your END USERS - The people that actually use your products, don;t change things that made your products what they are! When something works, don't fix it!
I can not imaging Flash Builder ever seeing a Version 5 if the Design View is not brought back.
So, hey... Adobe management - it's your lively hood because it's us developers that use your products that pay for your new releases that keep you in business. You have to show me why I should spend the $250 to upgrade when there are many FREE products out there that will now do everything that 4.7 will do. I just don't get it.
Thanks for listening, and I hope this comment is not just lost, forgotten or locked and displaced.

I guess that when they set at the round table, and discussed what it would mean if they removed the Design View, they must have though... nevermind, I have no idea what they were thinking. All I know is, I love Adobe Products, I have purchased the CS suites since CS2, and I have been using Flex since it was introduced. Design View, however such a "small" part of the overall Flex concept, is a very important part. The concept was to have an environment that allowed you to write code (actionscript) and bundle that with a user interface (Flash) and build these applications quickly (RAD). Sure, Flash Builder will still allow you to develop the coding part quickly, but the Design View was the key that tied it all together, allowing you to create the backend (code) and the front end (user interface) quickly. I do not care that you are a fabulous coder that feels they are so good that they do not need a design view. I want it, and I am the one who is buying it.
So, I guess Adobe must have felt there where enough people that will still buy the 4.7 and beyond concept to keep it alive. I feel... it will not be me.
Adobe, I really like your products, But this is something that really needs to be re-thought. Who ever the person was that made the decision to get rid of this, you need to now make the decision to let them all go. Because they effectivaly killed Flex for many many people.
I hope you figure all of this out soon, because we will continue to use 4.6 for a little while. Then, we will start to change our development practices. Are you wanting to push people back to Flash Pro? Well, this may be the way we have to go and forget about Flex. I hope this will not be the case, but we will see.
Adobe can make the decision to not listen, and I can make the decision to not spend. Last I understood, they were in business to make products they can sell. So, I know I will still be here with my money, even if Flex falls to the side.
