Developing Java on OSX 10.9.4

I would like to teach myself Java on my Mac running OSX 10.9.4. Other than entering the program into Text Wrangler and executing it through Terminal, I don't know how to go about this. Everything I find is old. They reference JDK or the like. Can someone point me to the right set of documents or a site or something so I can install a suite that will let me write java programs that do something besides "Hello World"?

Hmmm... Sounds familiar.
However, I don't know how much practical value using Java, Python, and Ruby on your Mac will have in a job search. There is a whole suite of tools - Ant, Maven, Jenkins, Tomcat, vagrant, and many, many more that would be expected. Plus they will want to know what major web sites you have developed. I would recommend learning Swift and writing some free iOS programs. That is all pure Mac development and would be easier to have a demonstrable evidence of your talents.

  • Double click to open .sql files with sql developer on mac osx

    hi,
I am trying to double click a .sql file and open it with SQL Developer on Mac OSX lion. I have associated .sql files to SQL Developer. On clicking the file it opens the SQL developer application but does not open the actual .sql file. Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hello,
Did you find any solution to your problem ? My SQL Developer worked fine and could open additional SQL files. Now it only opens the first one when starting SQL Developer. Additionnal files cannot be opened. Even running sqldeveloper.exe from command line with a SQL file as parameter doesn't help.
I'm on Windows 7, 64 bit, but the environment may not necessarily be the cause.

Not much there, but apparently people are trying to hack it together using JavaFX 2 already. I believe I read an article where Oracle itself had given a presentation about a JavaFX2 app on an iPhone; I believe the gist of it is that they want to make it so you can bundle the Java runtime with your application, which makes it legal to sell a Java application through the appstore.

  • Software Update Java for OSX 2012-2

Just got this tonight when Apple offered it in a Software Update check.  I got the Java for OSX 2012-1 a couple of days ago.  I can't find any info on what changed.  Anyone else get an explanation?

If you have Java installed on your system then I would highly recommend you keep it well up-to-date, and apply all the latest updates that are available for it. The latest Flashback malware threats have been using Java vulnerabilities to infect Mac systems with unpatched versions of Java.
Do keep in mind that it is not very likely you will run across the malware, but there is a chance out there. It has been speculated to have infected ~600,000 systems, and at an estimate of ~150 million Mac systems worldwide that's about 0.004%, or 1 in every 250 systems. This total is just a guestimate on my part.

  • Installing older version of Java on OSX Lion

I am trying to install an older version of Java on OSX lion 10.7.3. The latest update conflicts with matlab, I want to revert to java version 1.6.0_37. I have downloaded the version I want but when I try to install it ( click on the *.pkg file) I get the message : A newer version of this package has already been installed
    Any work arounds?

Give Shane Ross' blog entry a read:
    http://lfhd.blogspot.com/2006/10/versions.html
It is on a different topic but see how he tricks the software into installing without removing an old version. You might could do the same if you follow those steps.

  • Coding standards for developing java iviews

Are there any coding standards to be explicitly followed to develop Java iviews in SAP Enterprise Portal ? Does SAP has any specific java coding standards to get the SAP certification for the developed iviews ?

    Hi Sreeram,

No. What you can find (for example within the PDK doc or partially created by wizards) are templates for the different kind of iViews, especially for JSPDynPages. But you have to care - even these templates are not really "clean" - there are objects used to store data which shouldn't...
    > Does SAP has any specific java coding standards to get
    > the SAP certification for the developed iviews ?
No. What is needed is the proper use of namespaces, but this primarily concerns portal objects within the PCD. Some implementation things are to be considered, for example if i18n is offered, it really has to work. But SAP does not care about the source code of the iViews.
    Hope it helps

  • Java application development on Mac OSX

Does anyone do Java application development on a Mac? I know that Mac has their own version of Java and I was wondering if there were any difficulties of Java development on a Mac. I'm considering a switch from Windows to Mac and want to evaluate how it will impact my Java development. I currently use Eclipse 3.2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of Java development on a Mac?
    Thanks

I'm no Java3d expert but i'm quite sure java is slow on macs, as the java for mac technology is quite bad. Even 2d games with few sprites go slowly on my mac, it's a shame. However this might change as Apple is working quite hard on getting java to work properly, ( mainly because if java becomes popular the macs will lose their incompatibility problem! )

  • How do I reference a file using java on OSX?

I'm new to both Java and development on OSX. I'm trying to run a console app that opens a file and copies it somewhere else. Yet my code errors out saying the file is not found. This is a sample of how I'm trying to reference the source file. What am I doing wrong?
    String wholeFilePath = "file:/users/user_name/srcfile.txt";

You're welcome. Thanks for the dukes.
Note also the convenience of the System property "user.home"
String homeDir = System.getProperty("user.home"); This should be "/Users/user_name" on Mac OS X. But it will be different on Linux and Windows. I always like to avoid hard coding when I can.
