Developing JSP using SQLJ

Does anyone know how to develop JSP using SQLJ? This chapter is not availabe in the developer's guide. And which one is a better solution, JSP + BC4J or SQLJ?

I would stick with the JDK 1.1.8 in JDeveloper 3.0. SQLJ and JDBC do not yet support JDK 1.2 (they will in Oracle 8.1.6 and JDeveloper 3.1... not sure about OAS 4.0.9, but I would suspect so).

    Confusing isn't it? You can post questions here for specific problems you need to solve and usually get an answer (eventually). However, asking for which technologies are better will probably only provide you with biased opinions. There are many alternatives, each providing its own trade offs. I suggest searching google for articles from respected sources such as 'theserverside' rather than depend on individuals. Also, limit your search to articles that are no older than about 1 year. Lastly, try to stick with technologies that are used by the bulk of the developers and are considered almost an industry standard. No point learning some good yet obscure technology.
    As far as not considering a career as a developer, I suggest you stick to it no matter what. Anything you want to be good at takes years of practice and study
    (http://365pwords.wordpress.com/2009/01/25/practice-practice-practice-the-theory-of-10000-hours).
    No one has a 'knack' or is born good at it (even if they claim to be), and everyone experiences frustration (20 years later, I'm still frustrated!). You advance by making countless mistakes, and refactoring over and over again. Ignore anyone who discourages you no matter what.
    I think your quest should be limited to what you should learn when just starting out and not what is the best technologies for experienced users. Personally, I think learning JSP/Servlets is foundation that you should know well before considering alternatives. Also, many alternatives are based on extending JSPs and therefore you should know them well. I've always used JSP and not alternatives, so I can't comment further on that topic.
    If your just starting out in web design, here are my recommendations (in roughly this order):
    java -book (search amazon.com for books and reviews of what others have said in them).
    practice compiling java classes from the book on the dos command line and using a text editor before moving on to
    an IDE.
    Eclipse IDE - just an on-line tutorial may be ok. Learn to compile code, run it, debug it.
    JSP - book
    Servlets - book
    JUnit - just an on-line tutorial may be ok
    JSTL - just an on-line tutorial may be ok (use JSTL with JSP, not scriptlets)
    XHTML - just an on-line tutorial may be ok
    Javascript - book
    CSS - on line tutorial may be ok
    Tomcat - just an on-line tutorial may be ok. You can move onto JBoss, etc later.
    JDBC - book
    A free database such as Oracle Lite or MySql installed. Learn how to create tables.
    MVC design - read up on separation of concerns on a design (presentation,control,business, and database layer).
    SQL - book
    JQuery - book
    Hibernate -book
    Spring framework - book (only after creating an MVC web application with a single servlet as the control layer)

  • Using SQLJ from JSP in JDeveloper

    Hello,
    Has anyone succeeded in creating a JSP file by using SQLJ in JDeveloper 3.1 (Build 681)?
    In the whitepaper http://technet.oracle.com/docs/tech/java/servlets/jsp/whitepapers/jsp-oow99-paper.pdf
    it is stated that you can create an SQLJ-JSP by giving the JSP file the .sqljsp extension. This results in an "Fatal error: compiler internal error." in JDeveloper.
    In the same whitepaper, it is stated that you can also use the following JSP page directive to create an SQLJ-JSP page:
    "<%@ page language="sqlj" %>"
    This results in an "Error: (16) illegal character." error in JDeveloper at the mere sight of "#sql".
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Developing JSP iViews for PCR on R/3 4.6C Backend??

    I have read several posts and have looked into a lot of documentation, but there still seems to be some confusion regarding MSS/PCR and EP 6.0.
    Here is some background:
    We are planning to upgrade our portal from Workplace 2.11 to SAP EP 6.0 (NW04).  We have an R/3 4.6C backend and we are using ITS forms for our PCRs.
    When we move to the EP 6.0, I see two ways of proceeding:
    1.  Use IAC iView on ITS and just call our ITS based forms from the EP 6.0.  This means we keep our standalone ITS.
    OR
    2.  Develop JSP iViews for our PCR forms on EP 6.0.  This way, we would no longer need ITS.
    My confusion is whether I can actually do option 2.  After upgrading to EP 6.0 and installing the plug in 2003.1, can I develop PCR forms using JSP iView with a R/3 4.6C backend?
    Thanks,
    Younoos

    I am not sure anyone can give you specific guarantees regarding development and use of your own custom JSP iviews ITS or otherwise
    What I can say is -->
    Certainly from a SAP perspective the delivered MSS Business Package 60.1.20 (HTMLB with JSP PCRs) is useable
    in the landscape versions you mentioned (46C with EP6)  as per following link
    http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/webcontent/uuid/302ecc07-a56d-2910-8fad-84996151e3b4
    Therefore MSS PCRS based on JSP is possible in EP6 with 46C
    Its also not clear why your ITS based forms are being abolished - if you back-end remains 46C - then presumably these should
    still work - either called directly via ITS URL string given to users or integrated into EP 6 as a ITS iview or Portal HpF service calling ITS URL directly - the only reason I can think is that perhaps your ITS forms has a Workplace 2.11 dependancy or other dependancies I am not aware of.

  • Syntax to pass parameter value to jsp using href in out.println

    Hi,
    I have the URL in the form as mentioned below:
    <a href="b2c/marketing/showDocDetail.jsp"> <%=doc_no%></a>
    I've created the hyperlink using href tag to the document number in the jsp using the below syntax.
    <% String a1 = "Document ";
           String a2 = "<a href=\"";
           String a3 = "marketing/showDocDetail.jsp\">";
           String a4 = doc_no;
           String a5 = "</a>";
    out.println(a1a2a3a4a5);
    %>
    When clicked the doc_no is passed to backend RFC and export parameter is retrieved to result.jsp where values along with doc_no are displayed.
    the value after clicked is not being passed to action.java class that does the retreival.
    Needful, backend class, bom, entry in config.xml is all maintained.
    Please help me out with the syntax to pass the parameter value into java class

    Hi Bharathi,
    try below.
    <%
           String a1 = "Document ";
           String a2 = "<a href=\"";
           String a3 = "marketing/showDocDetail.do?docNo=";
           String a4 = doc_no;
           String a5 = " \">";
           String a6 = doc_no;
           String a7 = "</a>";
    out.println(a1+a2+a3+a4+a5+a6+a7);
    %>
    I assume doc_no is java variable contains value of document number
    Now create action entry in config.xml file. Suppose "actionDoc.java" class process it.
    <action path="/marketing/showDocDetail" type="com.xyz.actions.actionDoc">
                   <forward name="success" path="/marketing/showDocDetail.jsp"/>
                   <forward name="error" path="/marketing/showDocDetail.jsp"/>
    </action>
    We are passing parameter docNo=doc_no to action class actionDoc.java in this class you can retrieve request parameter docNo from request object and then process it as you want.
    Let me know if you face any problem or error.

    sample.jspx dose not have “Select Skin” box as the document shown.
    I am trying the sample project downloaded from sample WAR file - adffaces_skin.war in article “Developing and Using ADF Faces Skins”.
    In paragraph “Changing the Color Schema of a Skin”
    sample.jspx has a “Select Skin” box to allow user to select “Simple” or “MyCompany”. (in JSP Visual Editor)
    However, it does not show on the project built from downloaded from sample WAR file (adffaces_skin.war).

    After reading the whole document, I realize it is my mistake.
    The box will be created after all user skins setting.

  • IDE developing JSP And Hebrew  Encoding

    Hi.
    Im using Sun One Studio 4 CE.
    Im new Java Programmer.
    I create JSP that use Taglib and read XML file written in Hebrew (Encoding iso-8859-1);
    When I run the file on a Tomcat I have no problems.
    But when I run the file within the ide of Sun One Studio I get gibberish.
    So. Do you know where I cane change the character settings so It work the same?
    Thanks
    Shimon

    The default encodings specified by the JSP and Servlet spec are unfortunately no good for most of the world!
    There are two issues you need to understand: page encoding, vs response encoding.
    Page encoding defines what encoding was used to create a particular page (JSP, XML, HTML). Unless the page encoding is set correctly, the entity that reads the page (e.g. the JSP parser, the web container, or the web server) cannot understand the characters before they do anything with them.
    Response encoding defines what encoding is used when the server sends the HTTP response to the browser. This is actually a separate issue from page encoding. For example, a JSP could have the page encoding set correctly (so that the JSP parser can read it), but if the response encoding is not set correctly, then what goes to the browser is still gibberish.
    To set the page encoding of a JSP, use a page directive:
    <%@page pageEncoding="UTF-8"%>
    (UTF-8 will work in Studio, there is no need to pick another more specialized charset).
    In a HTML file or XML file, use an XML directive to set the page encoding. The XML directive will not work in JSP though.
    So now the parser can translate the JSP into a servlet. But that's not good enough, because we also have to produce a response that the browser can understand.
    To set the response encoding from a servlet, you can use
    response.setContentType("text/html;UTF-8")
    In J2EE 1.4, you can also use response.setCharacterEncoding("UTF-8");
    To set it from a JSP, use
    <%@page contentType="text/html;UTF-8"%>
    All modern web browsers understand UTF-8, so that is a safe encoding to pick for the response. (It is a good encoding at the page level too if you use Studio. If you use another tool for your JSPs and it prefers a different encoding, use that at the page level but stick to UTF-8 for the response unless you have wireless clients and know that you need something else).
    Note that this can only be set before any of the response is written. So if this JSP is included into another one, and the response buffer size has been exceeded, it won't work. So the response encoding must be set as early as possible.
    What if you have a servlet that forwards to a JSP? Well, if you consider how the response object works, you should only have to set it once and earlier is better, so the servlet controller would be the obvious place. However, in J2EE 1.3, the encoding model wasn't well spec'd out, so on some servers, even if you set the response in the servlet, the JSP will overwrite it with the default if you didn't specify the content type. So experiment and set it in both the servlet and the JSP if you have to.
    From J2EE 1.4, it's OK to set the response encoding once, it the servlet - the JSP container doesn't overwrite it anymore.

  • Strange behaviour with JDev 10.1.3.1 thru 10.1.3.3 creating JSP using CDB

    Greetings,
    I am experiencing a strange problem developing some simple JSPs using the Content DB libraries. It happens on JDev 10.1.3.1, 10.1.3.2, and 10.1.3.3.
    I don't know if its my environment or something else. If your in for a mystery then this one is for you.
    All JSPs, Backing Beans, and supporting class all compile without a problem.
    JSPs run and data is displayed as expected. All seems fine.
    Problem:
    When I go back to the JSP and click on it to open (for work), JDev just hangs up. Have to go into Task Manager to Kill process.
    Work Around:
    Back in JDev before I click to open JSP, I clean out the compiled classes. Then click on JSP and it pops right up?!?!
    Has something to do with Content DB libs?
    I go back to the backing bean and Comment out all calls to any CDB APIs within the methods. The overall structure of the backing bean is intact but it renders the JSP useless of course. But the after I compile (without errors) the NO CDB API version, I click on the JSP; it opens right up in JDev.
    Ok, what I did not tell you yet. The missing key to this mystery.
    I'm working on my local desktop. There is no local instance of OCDB on my desktop. Only Jdev and the OCDB development kit. The Actual instance of the content DB is elsewhere. The code reads a property file to get the URL and S2S logon information from a property file (local on my desktop) to connect and do its thing. NOW, AS LONG AS I AM VPN into the network (where several OCDB instances can be accessed), I can go into JDev and open the JSP REGARDLESS of whether I've compiled the code or not.
    When I'm running the VPN, I see the in and out byte count moving up and up, then within a few seconds, the JSP pops right up.
    How strange is this?!
    Question: When using the OCDB libraries with JDev, is it going out to look for some license? It seems that JDev knows my code is calling some OCDB APIs then goes out and does something before it allows me to continue. Without the VPN connection its looks like its sits there waiting for something. My colleagues don't have this problem. But of course they are inside of the firewall, I'm outside.
    I've worked on a lot of JSPs before (without OCDB) and I've never seen anything like this before. Here is a list of the libraries that I'm using.
    Using version 10.2 of the CDB Libraries.
    Importing these jars to my project in JDev.
    1. cdb-devkit-client.jar
    2. content-ws-client.jar
    3. axis.jar
    4. commons-codec-1.3.jar
    5. commons-discovery-0.2.jar
    6. commons-httpclient-3.1-rc1.jar
    7. commons-logging-1.0.3.jar
    8. jaxrpc.jar
    9. saaj.jar
    10. wsdl4j-1.5.1.jar
    Any suggestions would help. Since I've found a work around. I'm up and moving, but I would REALLY like to know what's up with this.
    THANKS
    Winston

    Hi folks,
    I have some more news on this issue.
    As noted in my first post, I noticed that the VPN monitor was moving very aggressively when the VPN connection was established. Activating JSP in design mode while classes were compiled and my VPN connected always seemed to do the trick.
    So, Why does it work when VPN is connected? What’s JDev doing?
    To answer these questions I loaded up an IP packet sniffer to find out exactly what JDev. was up to. Here are the results, but first a recap of the steps.
    Let’s say you have a model view project (using Content DB) that has already been compiled and you know it works.
    You are working remotely and need to connect via VPN.
    You have no local instances of the Content DB running.
    You VPN in and run the JSP from JDev. to verify that all is in working order.
    Ok get out of the app and close down all its windows.
    In JDev, close out all files in the developer.
    Disconnect the VPN.
    Then in JDev open the JSP. If it comes up in source mode switch it to design mode (Click on the "Design" tab).
    JDEV hangs up.
    Ok now Go into Task Manager and kill the process.
    Then find the class folder where the compiled code sits and delete them all.
    Start up JDev and go into your project and open the JSP file.
    If it comes up in source mode, switch to design mode. Either way this will work.
    Now close the JSP file.
    Recompile the code.
    NOW START UP the IP Packet Sniffer on your local machine. (VPN IS NOT CONNECTED)
    Open the JSP file. If it comes up in source mode, switch to design mode.
    Now go back and look at the IP packets.
    BEHOLD! IT IS TRYING TO CONNECT TO THE SERVER USING THE CORRECT URL FOR MY INSTANCE OF THE OCDB.
    Note: There are no URLs encoded in the code. It gets the URL by reading it from a properties file.
    The URL to the server is only specified in the property file.
    By the way, JDev is now hung up because you’re not VPN in.
    Go into the task manager and kill the process, delete the compiled class files, and restart JDev.
    Now go and find the property file on your local drive, and rename it.
    Go back to JDev. and recompile the code.
    Bring up the JSP in design mode.
    Look at the output of the IP packets.
    THERE ARE NONE! This also shows that its not some kind of cache problem, else it would try to connect.
    JDev is active and the JSP is displayed in design mode.
    So, either by deleting the compiled classes or removing the properties file CLEARS the problem.
    It appears that I’m hanging up because JDev is partially executing the code when you switch into design mode?!?
    If the code is complete it tries to go all the way. Since I'm not VPN in I never get a response from the server, thus it hangs forever.
    If the code is incomplete, it never tries to connect.
    Now if I try this WITH my VPN connected, I see the packets going to the server, and the JSP is eventually displayed.
    Also noted that when the property file was renamed and/or the executable classes were deleted, The JSP always pops up (almost immediately). When VPN is connected and classes are compiled and the property file is accessible, it is a lot slower. More Support that JDev is doing something with the server.
    So why is this thing running my code when I switch design modes?
    I’ve also found this thread on the JDev Fourm.
    JSP Design not working when ICEFaces extension is integrated JSP Design not working when ICEFaces extension is integrated
    A Known problem with JSP when third party libraries are added?!?!
    Content DB considered a 3rd party library?
    So, I must conclude that this is not an OCDB issue, but a JDev Issue.
    Aslo check out JDeveloper "Design" Perspective
    Hope this helps some one out. This was a barn burner.
    Thanks
    Winston

  • Developing reports using JDeveloper 3.0

    Is it possible to develop reports using jdeveloper 3.0, so that the end users can print reports over the internet? Is that a feature in jdeveloper or do I have to buy a third party tool?
    Thanks,

    Creating HTML/XML-XSL based reports in JDeveloper is completely doable.
    To do this you can either create a Servlet or a JSP. This JSP/Servlet can use either either JDBC or BC4J to access a datasource in the database.
    For further info on how to do this see the
    Java Server Pages overview at: http://tooldemo.oracle.com/demos/tools/jdeveloper/

    throw new JspException( e);
    %>
    </body>
    </html>

    I never really had much luck with this approach.
    Mind you I was using Crystal Reports 10, and as far as I recall it didn't allow setting/changing of database at this level.
    Things to check
    - can you create a database connection on your page with this URL/username/password?
    - what server are you using? Tomcat? WebLogic?
    I found this in your other post:
    Connection Information: {Server Name=ee6rpt, Connection String=DSN=s(ee6rpt);User ID=s(ee62test);Password=;UseDSNProperties=b(false), Database Name=, Database DLL=crdb_odbc.dll}That would indicate it is using odbc to connect to the database (crdb_odbc.dll). ODBC is a bad idea with java.
    The way I have got it to work for me (after much trial and error) was to in Crystal Reports to connect using the Oracle Driver, and specifying a tnsname - eg define REPORT_DS in tnsnames.ora.
    When running through the JRC, it looked for a JNDI datasource under that same name "REPORT_DS".
    Don't know if that will help you or not.
    Good luck,
    evnafets
