Differences in Oracle Drivers

We're running 5.1 sp11, and we're encountering the ORA-01475 error with the
Weblogic Oracle Driver.
The suggestions are to either change to the Oracle Thin driver or to set the
statement cache to 0.
It seems to me at this stage that setting the statement cache would be the
"safest", though it supposedly has some potential performance hit.
If I were to change to the Thin driver, what kind of issues might I
encounter? Is the Thin driver faster or slower? Do the different drivers
have any dramatic compatability issues? We're using CLOBs and BLOBs in our
application if that has any bearing.

As a further word of warning -- not all classes12.zip are equal. The name classes12.zip
belongs to at least a half dozen different versions and releases of the Oracle
thin driver... You shouldn't assume you have the right one. Go to Oracle's website
and get the right thin driver for your exact database version, as Kenneth recommends...

JDBC drivers vary, especially by version of Oracle. There's even a
different between 8.1.7.1 and 8.1.7.4. Use the Oracle drivers for the
version of Oracle that you have for either thin or OCI. Classes12.zip
should be the library. Add it to your classpath and configure according
to
the documentation. You may even notice an increase in performance.

They are totally different products made independently by different companies.

As long as your application uses standard JDBC APIs, the impacts will be minimized, and
unpredictable, some running faster, some slower... Any bug list for one driver will be
different than for the other. If you use any driver-specific extension APIs, they won't
be in the other driver.

Also changing the diver/datasource class name, and reviewing any arguments/driver properties.
Property names and functions are usually driver-specific.

Differences between Oracle OLEDB Provider & Microsoft version

I am trying to connect to an Oracle database from a SQL Server SSIS package. When I use the Microsoft OLEDB Provider for Oracle (MSDAORA) the connection manager in the package sees a full list of the tables in the Oracle database but when I use Oracle's own OLEDB provider (Oracle.OLEDB.1) I see a much smaller list. I cannot see anything different about the tables that Oracle's Oracle provider fails to see. Has anyone come across this phenomenon before ? Are there some table name characters or data types that the Oracle provider objects to ?

Not very likely.
One possible explanation is they query different levels of the datadictionary.
Sometimes the ALL_ level is queried, sometimes the DBA_ level, sometimes the USER_ level.
At least you need to ascertain whether you are using the same Oracle account in both drivers. This can also make a difference.
Anyhow: usually the Oracle driver implements way more functionality compared to the Microsoft driver, so the Oracle driver is to be preferred anyway.
And probably the Oracle drivers results are correct (one really should use the ALL_ level instead of the DBA_ level).

Projects built in ALBPM 6.0 can be used directly in Oracle BPM 10g, but the reverse is not true.
It's sometimes thought that Oracle BPM 10g was just a relabeling of the predecessor BEA product ALBPM. This is not the case.
In Studio, standards are better supported:

OCI is Oracle Call Interface. That's the lowest-level client API Oracle offers and the API that every thick client application eventually uses. For example, a C++ application using ADO would use the OLE DB driver which is itself written in OCI.
From a deployment standpoint, the major difference is that the thin driver can be deployed to any machine that has Java installed. The OCI driver can only be deployed to machines that have the Oracle client installed.
From a performance & functionality standpoint, there are features that only the OCI driver provides. Depending on the application, the OCI driver may also be faster.

I have a project to generate XML files from database tables, i have used oracle's built XML functions XMLELEMENT, XMLATTRIBUTES, XMLFOREST, XMLAGG. I really want to know if these functions (or) similar functions are supported/availabe in MySQL.

I suppose that in a MiddleWare stack : SOA suite + BI publisher + Forms, the 11.1.1.6 (11gR1 PS5) is the best choice.

J would like to know if there are some differences between Oracle 8i for a UNIX Platform and Oracle 8i for a Linux Platform.
I know that there are some differences on Oracle 8i Parallel Server and i know that some products are not include like precompiler (Mod*Ada, Pro*FORTRAN) on a Linux Platform.

Differences between oracle text in enterprise and express editions

are there any differences between oracle text features found in express edition and ent. edition. if so what are they?

There is a list of features available in the online documentation. The only thing that it mentions as being missing from Oracle Text are the english and french knowledge bases. There isn't any Intermedia or Ultra Search or Data Mining. Here is a link to the 10g Express Edition features guide:

The above thread includes the following quick comparison:
If it's not in Standard Edition One, it is not in Express Edition. (Therefore everything that is in Enterprise but not in Standard Edition, is also not in Express Edition. That includes all EE-only options.)
If it requires Java in the database, it is not in Express Edition.
Other than that, it's mainly the size limits: 1 CPU (no parallel processing), 1 GB RAM, and 4 GB user-related tablespaces.
