Dim Lcd

Hey everyone. wondering if anybody has had the same problem. I've been having dim screen on my powerbook g4 15" AL. tryed increasing the brightness by f4 but nothing. then i tryed replacing the display inverter card.i got it from some guy off of ebay. The display inverter i bought looked like it was in bad shape.well same result when i installed it. Any suggestoins? i'm about to replace the LCD screen but i wanna know if anybody has seen this problem.
thank you
powerbook g4 15" AL 1ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi cruxificado,
I hate to suggest this because you probably already tried it but is the computer set to use the fn key in combination with the F2 (I am assuming that the F4 you typed is a type-o since that controls volume and not screen brightness on my PowerBook 15").
Also, does changing the setting through the display settings control panel work, or is it just the function key that doesn't work?
Sorry these suggestions are so simple but that is usually the best place to start.
My screen is also set to dim automatically under low light conditions, another setting that can be turned on and off.
I hope this helps.

  • T400 dim LCD

I have T400.It is giving dim dispaly.I replaced LCD and LED card with new one but all in vail. Please guide me what could be the reason for this.It is LCD Display cable issue or Mother Board issue? Please reply soon. Thanks in advance.

there could be an issue with the either the display cable or a fuse on the motherboard that controls the brightness of the screen.
Is the screen completely dark or there is still some light that is coming out of the display?

  • HP IQ775 Dim LCD Screen

    Hi!
My HP IQ775 turns ON, splashes the hp logo and then the screen goes dim. Everything is working but the screen backlight does not stay ON. Can't be the LCD inverter as the backlight does turn ON at start. Does anyone have any idea why its doing it. Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks

The inverter is in the screen housing.
Bigger job to remove but not impossible.
10-15 mins if you have done it before.
You need to remove the hinge from the screen before you can remove the plastics.
That meens that you have to unplug and pull thru the 5 wires,
Front plastics off (you can leave the U shaped bit) ,
    Front metal shield off,
    Back cover off,
Now pull the wires to allow removal from main body.
    NOTE:
The wires cannot be streched long enough to attempt removal
so the wires have to come off along with the LCD body.
You aint never going to do it any other way.
Take the screen off the main body and work on it flat it will be easier.
So get the wires free and then remove the 8 hinge screws.
Oh do not forget to support the screen as you take out the screws.!!!
The plastics from the hinge then need to be removed and then you can get to the black screws.
Now the hinge shoud be totaly off.
The back and front plastics will snap apart fairly easy,
start at a top corner and release along the top, then sides then the bottom
Then just another 12 or so screws and your in.
Don't forget to tighten the 3 screws holding the screen mount to the hinge.
HP seemed to overlook that on quite a few 700 series.
Use a bit of thread lock if you fancy for best results.
    HOWEVER::
Now you mention that the graphics has already been under attack perhaps the fault is there.
Was the invertor working before you did what you did or was the backlight doing this before ?
Never seen a dead inverter though.
    Hv.
I never knew who HP were until my workshop got filled with faulty equipment. !! I know who Apple are now too.

  • Auto-dimming LCD and stripes

The unit is a X121e with 64-bit original preinstalled windows 7.
Stripes are appearing when moving cursor in Firefox and " Thunderbird. As both are Mozilla products, maybe it is a developer dependent problem. Restart didn't help. Just asking whether anyone encountered something like this.
Second problem: Screen got totally (and auto) dimmed when bringing Google chrome or firefox in foreground. Restart did help, but want to know if I missed anything. Same question here: did anyone have this kind of problem?
    Thanks

I would like to share with you that it might be because of software issue.
To diagnose, I would suggest you to please update the graphics driver and also update the Bios of your Notebook from the below mentioned web link.
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page?
After this, please restart the Notebook and check if the issue resolved.

  • Darker top third and bottom third this AM

I came down this morning and when I woke the computer [PowermacG5] from sleep saw something I'd never seen before = my 30" ACD came up and the top and the bottom 1/3 were darker than the middle 1/3 - I checked the pref. and adjusted the brightness but it didn't improve it = I then rebooted the whole computer and now it's gone = I'm certainly glad it's gone but thought I would ask whether anyone knows the cause/fix etc.
I had just upgraded to 10.4.9 but don't see the correlation, at least yet

    Hi
Normally a partially dimmed LCD indicates a problem with the back light(s). Assuming the 30" ACD has three (top, middle and bottom), it seems unlikely though that two would temporarily fail simultaneously and then work again after a reboot. I guess one option would be to keep an eye on it to see whether it happens again.

  • T400 LCD dim issue - Need help!!

I'm having a LCD dim issue with a T400. Have changed the LCD panel, LCD cable and systemboard but still having same issue. If i removed the lcd card, then the display is working fine. I've tested the lcd card in another working unit and it's working as well (means the lcd card is working). I use a working lcd card and plug into this T400 but LCD still dim.
I've try to switch the problematic lcd cable and lcd panel to a working systemboard and it kills the systemboard. Have try to switch a few things but still unable to find the root cause. Urgently need help on this. Any advice will be appreciated.

    hey bhoh
i suggest uninstalling your current graphic card driver, let windows install its own generic drivers and see if that makes any difference

  • The dock indicator lights look fairly dim on the MBA display, but bright on external displays (LCD TVs for example). Any fixes?

    (MacBook Air mid-2012)
As stated in the title, I've noticed the indicator lights on the dock which represent an open/running application looking fairly dim as opposed to the previous dock design in Lion. After a little look around on the internet, there are some others who are having a similar issue, but I've noticed that upon connecting the laptop to external displays (monitors and LCD TVs), they look extremely bright and noticeable on that particular screen.

https://discussions.apple.com/message/19126554#19126554 This thread appears to address the same issue, yet its odd how the dock "raises" if connected to an external display in my case. I'm considering locating the image files used to display the dock indicators and photoshopping them to be brighter.

  • Thinkpad T61 LCD dim, go with led upgrade???

Hey I just got a T61 and the LCD screen is very dim/dull when the laptop is plugged in or on highest setting, its nearly as dim as my Lenovo N500 on lowest brightness setting!!!
I know I will need to replace most likely the inverter and possibly the bulb inside, but I am wondering if I should replace the screen as well, and if so is there a 14.1" widescreen for this laptop with a better more crisp screen "like the n500"???
there is an led upgrade kit for the t61 series and i think that would most likely make the screen like new besides the few blemishes that is there now.
    whats everone think?

Your inverter is most likely fine, just a weak bulb, but if you've eveer tried to replace one of these it's not a simple matter, your best option is to replace the screen. As for an LED upgrade, I think that's snake oil, as these systems don't have the necessary electronics to power an LED backlight. I have seen some (very expensive) circuitry that claims to control an LED backlight, but good luck getting it to work with things like your computes brightness settings, if it works at all it will probably be always on as the inverter isn't designed to control led lights.
Perhaps someone has designed a kit that resolves some/all of these problems...   but then you're still back at the point of having to install it in the screen. If you have a samsung screen they are a nightmare to open, you'll probably need to cut the screen open and tape/glue it back together. Other brands aren't as bad, but to do this right you'll need a labritory grade "clean room", because as soon as you open the LCD every partical of dust in the air will stick to the screen and you'll never get it out without replacing it with smear marks. If you do manage to "pull this off", then please take photos to share with the community.
If I were you I'd just buy a screen, there are some good used ones available, and I may have one with a good backlight, but with a vertical line on the screen that I could send you if you cover the postage, perhaps you can use the parts to combine one good one.

  • T400 LCD screen is very dim, but icon lights for HDD, etc. are working

Hi - I'm wondering if anyone knows what the issue with my T-400 would be if the LCD screen is very dim.  Details include:
    - When I boot up, there's a faint outline of what is going on, but barely noticeable since the whole screen is very, very dim
    - Video card is working okay, because I can operate the laptop when I plug in an external monitor
    - The icon lights for HDD, power, battery, etc. are still working
Thanks so much for the help.

First a question: Is it a CCFL backlight or LED? If it is a CCFL, it could be just the inverter, which is a lot cheaper than the panel. If the CCFL bulb goes out, usually (but not always) there is a red tint to the screen for a while first. The LED backlights are less likely to blow and there is no inverter. (The LED backlight is DC and the inverter convers the DC to AC to drive the CCFL bulb) Do you know which kind of backlight you have? If you don't know, send me your full model and serial in a pm and I'll look it up. Don't post it in the open forum. Also, what were you doing when it went out? Were you doing anything except normal work, like taking something apart or hooking something up?

  • My 13" Macbook has a very dim screen. Replace inverter board or lcd screen?

I have a 13-inch Macbook and the screen display has gone extremely dim and is very hard to see. Should I replace the inverter board or lcd screen?

No dice   I have it hooked up to an external display and can see that it isn't recognizing the battery.  I've installed a brand new battery connector already, and this is the second battery (although they are from the same place, so maybe they had a bad batch?).  I've done all the updates (firmware and Battery Updater) but still, nada.  Any other suggestions?
I am not too familiar with this specific MacBook battery.  When I push the button on the bottom, 4 out of the 5 lights come on, then the one in the middle, then they all go off.  When I have it plugged in without the machine on, the light on the adapter is green.  I start it up, and it goes to amber.
This is driving me crazy!  What are the chances I would get two bad batteries?  Or two bad battery connectors?  Could it possibly be the logic board?  I was thinking no, because it actually works fine without a battery and shuts off the backlight when the battery is plugged in.

  • LCD dim uneven display on startup-safe to replace or have it diagnosed 1st?

I have a 5 year old G4 12" Powerbook that is well worn and used daily. On startup yesterday, the screen seemed dim- almost too dim to use, and more dim on the left side than the right. I am running a back up just to play it safe, but would it be safe to say it is the LCD on it's last leg and a replacement will remedy the problem, or should I spend the money on taking it somewhere for diagnosis?

Me again... also... would this be a failing LCD, or is it the backlight? Or are these one in the same? Can someone explain the difference and how I might do a little diagnosing?

  • My screen is really dim and I cant brighten it. Could the problem be my LCD

I got the phone off of Craigslist and the person said the phone was in great condition but the screen is so dim I can barely see the icons under a light and was wondering if maybe the LCD was broke or had water damage or something

    Hey there,
I'm new here but I got a lot of info under my belt with apple products.
Have you tried adjusting the brightness? at the home screen tap settings then brightness. From there use the slide bar to adjust te screen brightness. It couldnt be possible to be damaged by being dim. If it were damaged it would have different colors or unresponsive. Hope this helps you my friend!

  • Cause & Solution for Dimly Lit LCD on T41?

Hello.  My T41 Thinkpad (2373-7FU) LCD is very dimly lit.  The LCD is dimly lit from start-up.  Browsing the Internet I find a couple of possible reasons so was hoping someone might be able to help me identify the cause and recommend a solution.
    1. Broken backlight (CCFL: cold cathode fluorescent lamp)
    2. Broken inverter board.
    3. Broken LCD ribbon cable.
    4. Problem with motherboard (PC doctor’s test appear to exclude this).
Thanks for any help anyone can provide!

High-pitched noise leads me to believe that you have an inverter problem, which would be cheap and easy to replace, and would've been the starting point for any of my recommendations anyway.
Whatever you need to know about the particular FRU number that matches the inverter for your machine with the rest of the unit, along with the instructions on how to replace it can be found in the HMM:
    ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/39t6192_01.pdf
    Hope this helps.

  • Tecra A9 - LCD Screen Extremely Dim

    Hi all!
My 4 year old Tecra A9 recently developed a problem with the screen. While using it, i heard a zap and the screen cut out. It hasn't worked since. I've been able to plug it into an external monitor to keep using it though.
But i did find that the screen isn't actually dead, its just extremely dim. If i look really closely and shine a torch on it, I can see what's on the screen. This leads to me believe its something to do with the back-lighting in the LCD screen.
Also, I've checked, and its not a problem with the sensor thinking the lid is closed.
Anyway, I would like to know if anyone has an idea about what the problem specifically is? If so, is this the sort of problem that I can fix myself, or do i need someone from Toshiba to do it for me?
    Thanks!

    Hi Matt89,
I agree with Akuma. If an external monitor works properly it looks like that the FL inverter is faulty. This inverter controls the backlight of internal display and even it would be faulty you can see the picture but very very dim.
If think the best would be contacting an authorized service provider. The guys can order an original FL inverter that is compatible and replace it for you because the display itself must be disassembled and thats not easy.
If your notebook isnt under warranty anymore dont worry because FL inverter is not so expensive. :)

  • Does AppleCare cover my dimming iBook LCD screen?

    Hi - Simple question.
Does AppleCare cover my dimming iBook LCD screen? I've had the iBook less than two years, and the screen seems about 50% (maybe a little more) as bright as it was when I bought it.
Note, I also had to have the logic board replaced immediately after purchase, since it blew due to a heat issue. I understand the video module is on the logic board, too. I don't use it more than 1-5 hours, maybe two or three days a week, at a time (I have two other desktop Macs). The real, real problem is, it's my music workstation! Hard to edit notes in Logic Express when-I-can't-see-what-I'm-doing!
Any thoughts or answers? It's getting to be a real bummer not being able to use the iBook as a portable laptop in any brightly lit area.
Really, now. Sorry, I can't make the 10AM meeting, it's too bright in the meeting room with those overhead skylights... unless it's cloudy or raining...
    ~Robb

It certainly should! My iBook screen is as bright as ever--I got it in March of 2004 and none of the updates had any effect on the brightness. So your iBook screen should not be getting dim from normal wear and tear--there is something definitely wrong. If it's not due to a preference setting or something like that, be sure and take it in for diagnosis and repair before your warranty runs out.
    Good luck!
