Disable iPhoto auto-run??

Hi all. I've got a Nikon D50, I want to be able to upload my pictures from my camera to my computer WITHOUT USING Iphoto. I have Adobe bridge and like using that a lot more for my photographs. Don't get my wrong, I love iPhoto for my pictures of friends and family, but is there a way to disable the autorun feature on iPhoto so that I can use bridge instead????
Thanks for any input!

Hi matthew,
there sure is.

  • Disable iPhoto auto launch w/ plist?

I know you can disable iPhoto auto launch from the Image Capture app, but I would like to know where Image Capture saves its preferences so I can disable it by editing or replacing a plist.
I need to change preferences on a whole lab of Macs, and I would prefer to do it remotely on all of them at once if possible.
I looked but I can't seem to find where the preferences are saved. If anyone knows or knows of an easy way to do it let me know. Thanks.
    Power Mac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It seems to be this file:
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.ImageCapture2.00039343a1a8 .plist"
At any rate, that is the file that contains this entry, as the sole thing in the file:
    HotPlugActionPath String /Applications/Image Capture.app
So you can try adding/deleting this file and see if that will do what you want.

  • How to disable iPhoto auto open?

When I plug my iOS device into my Mac with iTunes open, it automatically opens iPhoto.  Is there a way to disable this?

    Hello there wasylultra,
It sounds like your computer is becoming unresponsive whenever you plug in any USB device that has or takes photos, because iPhoto launches automatically and takes a while to open. You can change this preference in iPhoto itself to open either iPhoto, Image Capture, or no application at all when you connect a device:
iPhoto '11: Change what happens when you connect a camera to your computer
To choose the application that opens:
Make sure no cameras are connected to your computer.
Choose iPhoto > Preferences, and then click General.
Choose an option from the “Connecting camera opens” pop-up menu.
The title of the article mentions iPhoto '11 but the same steps hold true for iPhoto 2013.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,

  • Health Check Auto-run disabled (not by me!)

I've hardly used my laptop since mid-Dec due to gall-stones problems/hospitalisation (now resolved - yippee!).
When I powered up this morning to run updates/scans etc, WIn Patrol showed a message that my HP Health Check auto-run had been disabled and that I should reinstal it.
I've not disabled it nor can I find the solution elsewhere in the Forum.
I'd appreciate your help please. Thanks.

thanks for that, Erico.  I already have, and use the HP Support Assistant.
I've found the HP Health Check Folder - it's dated 7th March 2015 and has four folders in it. Three (ActiveCheck, Guid and HPasset) have the same date - the fourth (Tools) is dated 14th July 2014.
The oldest file in ActiveCheck is from Nov 2010.
I have never installed the Health Check nor changed or even seen its settings. All I can say is that from time to time a message would appear that it was running/had run.
On the 2nd March 2015 (the date of my post) there was a message that Health Check had been disabled etc., hence my post.
If you think it's best not to have it auto-run I'm happy with that but I'm now confused that five days after my post, the three folders mentioned above were created. I didn't do that so how could it have happened? Are they legit or could they be a trojan/virus or something nasty?

  • How to disable yum auto-update in OL6

    Hello,
What is the correct procedure to disable yum auto-updates?
The "yum-updatesd" daemon that existed in OL 5 does no longer exist in OL 6.
I found out that the "PackageKit Update Applet" seems to be responsible for running the auto-update. It can be enabled or disabled in the new Preferences/Startup Applications control panel. There is also the "gpk-prefs" control panel to set the update interval to "never". However, both control panels work on a per-user/login basis and cannot be used to disable yum auto-update system-wide.
Finally I found /etc/PackageKit/PackageKit.conf, which has a DefaultBackend parameter, but I don't know what I should put there.
Is there here a way, to disable the yum auto-update system-wide without uninstalling PackageKit?
I already checked the documentation at http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/Deployment_Guide/ch-PackageKit.html but it was not helpful.
    Thanks!

The actuall problem I'm trying to fix is the following error:
    <pre>
Another app is currently holding the yum lock; waiting for it to exit...
    The other application is: PackageKit
    Memory : 45 M RSS (357 MB VSZ)
    Started: Tue Jul 10 09:27:04 2012 - 04:09 ago
    State : Sleeping, pid: 2317
    </pre>
The above error can happen if you have an active Gnome session and e.g. connect as root using ssh session and try to use yum.
I may have found a way now to disable the automatic system updates, however, I don't know if this is the proper solution since I cannot find any information about it.
    I modified */etc/PackageKit/PackageKit.conf* and changed:
    <pre>
    DefaultBackend=yum -> DefaultBackend=nobackend
    </pre>
It requires a re-login of your Gnome X session to take affect.
Then Administration/Software update does no longer scan for updates, and apparently no longer lock yum at the system level. At least the problem seems to be fixed globally that way.
I will mark this question as answered, but any ideas are still welcome.
    Thanks!
Btw, here is a link to previous older thread to disable it on a per-user basis:

  • Disable JRE Auto update in Vista for all users?

I feel like a complete idiot that I can't figure this out, but it's either so obvious I'm overlooking it, or I just plain can't figure it out, so I'm hoping someone here can help.
We have not yet been able to figure out how to simply disabled the Auto Update option when installing JRE under Vista, so it will never check for updates, no matter what user is logged into a pc. I've just installed the newest version 1.6.0_05-b13, but get the same results.
Basically, we are creating a "base clone image" of a Vista workstation and we need the auto update feature of the JRE to be disabled so it doesn't check for updates. When a new user logs into the pc, we want them to 'inherit' this setting from the default user profile, or we simply want a 'global' setting on the pc that stops all JAVA update checks from occuring. But even though there are multiple registry keys that 'look' like they control the auto update function, no matter how we set them the update option still shows it is enabled when you open the JAVA control panel.
    We have 2 basic problems:
    - When a standard user runs the JAVA Control Panel applet and they select the 'Update' tab, the option to "uncheck" autoupdates is "grayed out". If we make the user a local administrator, then it is not grayed out anymore and they can set the option. Problem is, we have thousands of users and none of them are local administrators, hence the problem of getting it to already be defaulted to not check for updates. How do we get the update checkbox to NOT be grayed out for a NON-administrator?
    - How do we set the 'global' (or default) option to disable the auto update checkbox for ALL users? No matter what we try, when a new user logs in, the auto update feature is still enabled after their initial profile is generated from the first time login.
I was able to figure out if I change the "EnableJavaUpdate" value in the below registry key, it will "remove" the Update tab from the JAVA Control Panel. But does the simply remove the tab? Or does it remove the tab AND disable auto updates for ALL users on the computer?
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Update\Policy
I've sent multiple emails to Sun asking for help on what should be a simple thing to do, but have never received a reply from them.
    Keith Hemmelman

Thank you for the reply. I apologize for not getting back here sooner.
We actually already use a deployment.properties file located under the Default User profile on our Vista setup. It's located under the "C:\Users\Default\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment" folder. This file does get copied over to a new user profile when a new person logs in. This is what we want since we have set things like the maximum cache size and temporary file location.
The problem though is there is no setting that disables the automatic update check within this file. The best I can figure out is that for some reason under the Vista environment, the auto update setting is controlled in the registry at: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JavaSoft\Java Update\Policy
There is a REG_BINARY key there that appears to control this option. It is named "EnableAutoUpdateCheck". The problem is that the value of this key is "several" characters long and it is "different" from one user to the next. I tried disabling auto update under the Java Control Panel and then copied the value of this key into the same aread of the Default User hive but when a new user logs in, it ignores that setting and auto update is still enabled. I also tried using a simple "0" to disable the autoupdate or a "1" to enable it for this key, but it doesn't work either. (This is very frustrating why there isn't a simple 1 or 0 setting to turn the auto update setting on/off.)
We had no problem getting this to work under XP. Basically we didn't have to do anything special in XP. We simply created a temporary user account and made all the settings we wanted and then copied that profile over to our Default User profile and the Java autoupdate setting under the Java Control Panel was disabled for all new users. We did the same thing under Vista, but the auto update setting was ignored and re-enabled for all new users.
I read through the settings for the deployment.properties file located at the below link, but there is nothing there to control the auto update setting.
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/guide/deployment/deployment-guide/properties.html
Thus, we can't get the auto update setting to be disabled in the default user profile so it will in turn be disabled for all new users that log into the computer. This is extremely frustrating.
The other equally frustrating problem we have run into under the Vista environment is that when you run the Java Control Panel, the option to disable the auto update check is "grayed out" and the user can't uncheck this option to disable auto update. We have found you must be an administrator before this option is no longer grayed out. Since none of our thousands of users are admins, this is also a problem for us. (This option works fine for a standard user if you are on a XP machine though. It's just Vista where things have changed.)
I've sent repeated emails to Sun in the past asking for help, but they never replied.

  • Auto run file for installation of HP Officejet 8500 Pro A909g Missing from driver download

I have a HP Officejet 8500  Pro A909g. I downloaded the new Windows 8.1 64 bit driver as 8.1 would not allow the scanner to operate on the existing driver.  Printing was fine. When i went to install the wizard,  auto run file for the wizard is missing and so the installation can  not run and instal the new driver.

    Hello IanHP8500,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you're having an issue getting your Officejet 8500 scanning on Windows 8.1. I will do my best to help you with this issue.
Did you upgrade to 8.1 from an older version of Windows?
If so, with it not scanning correctly. You can try just removing the HP Solution Center from programs and features.
Go to the bottom left corner of your screen right click on the Windows icon> go to Control Panel> Go to Programs> uninstall Solution Center if it's listed.
Next, instead of using the printer install wizard. Download the software from this link: HP Officejet Pro Full Feature Software and Driver. Let it run through, it should prompt to " add more software". This should allow you to reinstall Solution Center.
If you run into issues, there is something you may have to do. If you get a file missing error here, or the install hangs check your computer for the following.
McAfee Live Safe - Disable the "Realtime Scanning".
Check for and remove HPOINS*.dat or HPWINS*.dat. Here is a link to a post by JonW on how to do this: Re: installer setup hangs under Windows 8.1.
Try all of this, and let me know how you make out. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

  • Auto Run ignores URL parameters and uses Defaults on first run

We have BI Publisher 11g standalone (not OBIEE).
We have a suite of BI Publisher reports, all set up on data sets with default parameters.
All reports have Auto Run enabled and caching disabled.
The reports are run from a Flex UI application using a URL i.e. URLVariables and URLRequest and navigateToURL.
The required parameters for any report are read from BI Publisher using the web services, then the user makes their selections in our custom UI.
    We use:
                             urlVariables['_xpf'] = null;
                             urlVariables['_xpt'] = 0;
                             urlVariables['_xf'] = 'html';
                             urlVariables['_xmode'] = 1;
The first time any user runs any report in the application the report is generated but with the default parameters NOT their selected values, and it displays the parameter controls when the settings as per above say it should NOT.
Any report generation after that is fine - it runs with the user's nominated parameters values, and it does not display the parameter controls.
Originally we thought it might be caching so along with all report caching settings being disabled, we introduced a parameter to force the uniqueness of each report URL i.e.
                             urlVariables['noCache'] = new Date().getTime();
In Safari, if we Reset Safari then restart the app in the same browser window we can reproduce the problem.
    Any suggestions please?
    Thanks

I'm not sure where the "Enable Document Cache" setting is?
All reports have caching disabled - so for each report in its Report Properties, all items on the Caching tab are checked off.
    i.e.
    Enable Data Caching - off
    User Level - off
    Document Caching - off

  • Auto Run off but report access via URL generates default

    Hi,
We have BI Publisher 10.1.3.4.1. I access reports via URL from another application outside BI Publisher.
For my reports, I have Auto Run disabled. Still Accessing the link via URL seems to generate report instead of waiting for user
to enter parameters and click view.
When I view report via BI Publisher, the behaviour is ok, i.e. it won't generate until I click the View button.
Does anyone know how to make sure BI Publisher won't generate report without an explicit click of View button when invoked by URL.
    Thanks
    Girija

    Hi Tim,
I am calling the report in _xmode=6 i.e. the parameters show and the view button shows.
We want the user to be able to input their parameters and run the report.
    regards

  • Auto Run in Dashboard

I have created a Publisher report based on OBIEE Answers I have 'Auto Run' checked. The report is not auto-running I have to click on the View button. Has anyone come across this?
I really want the report to auto-run so I can remove the controls.

You can't for the Macintosh. The ability to autorun a cd was removed after a security issue under OS9 back in the 90s. Since OSX came out it is not possible to make an autorun CD.
But perhaps you were thinking of that other platform....
In many cases it is possible you just need to create an ini file or something like that. I can't remember exactly but I have done it before and it is easy. You can easily search with google to find out how.
However a lot of folks have disabled the feature in windows as well since it is such a security risk. So you should have an alternate plan to make it easy for your users to start it on their own as well.

  • Auto-Run/Start Doesn't show up on iTunes

Hi, I'm having a difficult problem about the Auto-Run/Start thingy for my iPod touch that doesn't show up on iTunes on my MacBook Pro 13". Just because I want to remove my pictures from my iPod touch so I can transfer into the MacBook Pro as Picture folders.
So how come it didn't show up like the Auto-run/start pop-up thingy? I did it before (like last week). Why like that? How come I didn't see that one on Finder folder on my MacBook Pro?

ah thanks... i already saw it on iPhotos.
i always thought the device didnt show up on Finder but only can show up on iPhoto when i sync it on my Macbook Pro from my iPod touch.

  • Auto Run in Flash

    Hi,
Is it possible to create an Auto Run cd in Flash without having any extra software? I want to be able to create a cd that runs automatically with buttons on the menu that will take the user to individual files? Do I need special software to do this?
    Thanks for your help!

  • Disabling iPhoto/System Preferences integration

I've got a few users IDs on my systemn, and only one
of them has photos imported via iPhoto ... and even
then, I don't want the photos available as a screensaver.
My screensaver is set to 'random', which means that
every once in while I get a screensaver with the
text 'No pictures in this directory'.
I want to remove the iPhoto albums from the Desktop
and Screen Saver preferences panes -- either per
user, or system-wide. So far IU have been able to
remove everything but 'Library' using the iPhotos
preferences, and I can remove Library by deleting
~/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library [but it is re-created
    each time iPhoto is run].
I've done a bit of searching around in the BOMs for
iPhoto, the iPhoto user and application dirs, and
the frameworks for ScreenSaver. Doing a grep for
'iPhotoLibrary' brings up a few binary files
which match, but not text files.
Is this path hard-coded into the Screensaver
applicstion, and if so, what the h3ll is wrong with
Apple's programmers? Is there any way short of
uninstalling iPhoto to remove the iPhoto albums
from the ScreenSaver prefs, or to make the random
    screensaver disable them?
    [Update: I did a chmod a-rx ~/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library
and that is a hack solution: I get an error message
running iPhoto, and have to Force-Quit iPhoto to
exit it. This is supposedly UNIX, we can do better!]

  • Auto running CD in CP4

I don't seem to get how to make an auto running CD of CP4 output. When I choose the publish option 'Autorun for CD' and copy the 5 output files to a CD, that CD doesn't run by itself when I put it in a reader. What I'm missing (more grey matter or a step)?

    Hi there
There are different reasons autoplay can fail.
A systems administrator may have disabled autoplay when configuring the PC
The name of the project you are trying to autoplay is too long. Sometimes spaces can cause it to break
The autorun.inf is incorrectly configured or not present on the media
Perhaps the media is DVD? I'm not sure autoplay works on DVD

  • Disable iTunes auto launch on iPhone docking.

Hello I'm trying to disable iTunes from automatically opening when I dock my iPhone to my computer. I have successfully done this by disabling ituneshelper.exe but this automatically enables itself after every reboot. (even if I disable it via msconfig) Is there a way to permanently stop iTunes from opening up when I dock my iPhone? Thanks a bunch.
I do not have any auto sync functions on.
I run Windows Vista 64 bit.

    I have the same problem!
I am running 8.2.1.6 and EVERY time I plug in my iPhone 3GS it causes two events:
    1) Windows has to tell me that there's a camera connected and asks me if I would prefer to use MS Word or the Camera/Scanner Wizard. Grrr. (MS Word??? Duh.)
    2) iTunes launches, bogs down my network connection, grinds for 5 minutes, and then tells me all about iTunes DJ. Sigh.
In the past, I thought the "Disable automatic syncing" option in Preferences>Devices was all that was required to disable the auto-launch. I guess that's no longer the case.
All I want is to use my USB port to charge my phone -- I let the real iTunes on OSX take care of all my syncing requirements . . .
I think this maybe should be considered a BUG.
    Anybody got an answer?
