Disable Self-Tuning TCP

I need to disable this or, at the very least, take control of it. It's made doing anything on the internet a miserable, lengthy process. I had no trouble with Tiger and nothing but trouble with Leopard. It's throttling my downstream on both my Macs to useless levels.
If I can't disable or modify this I'm going to go back to Tiger to get things done. I own a business. I cant have this time wasting nonsense and I need a solution now. Much of my work is on the web. I'm paying for high speed access and getting low speed throughput.
The DNS settings are in place, no firewall setting improves this, I've reset all the Airports. Nothing changes. Downloading anything crawls to low speed but ONLY on the Macs.
Does anyone have a clue? Can I archive and install back to Tiger?

That is indeed strange that you do not have one. If that is the case, then create sysctl.conf in /etc and add the following text.
kern.ipc.maxsockbuf=512000
net.inet.tcp.sendspace=131072
net.inet.tcp.recvspace=358400
net.inet.tcp.sockthreshold=0
After you save the file in /etc then make sure it has the proper ownership and permissions.
chown root:wheel /etc/sysctl.conf
chmod 0644 /etc/sysctl.conf
They will not be overwritten when you reboot and will be automatically loaded every time.

    Done:
1). Cleared TMP and CACHE directories and still does not solve the issue.
    Any ideas are appreciated.
    thanks

    Hi,
we had same hang issue. Unfortunately we run behind VM.
It was an issue with securerandom generation.
We solved the issue as described here http://stackoverflow.com/a/2564406/2098832
Also deleted the <server>/tmp directory before.
    Hope this helps.

  • Self tuning Thread Weblogic 9.2

    Hi, I'm using Weblogic 9.2.
Weblogic 9.2 has a self tuning thread, which adapts itself in order to optimize the throughput.
The problem is that anytime you restart the server, the thread pool restarts from a low number of threads and takes some time to reach the optimal number of threads again. This is a major issue, since it means that whenever you restart the server, you cannot handle the same amount of traffic as before the restart.
Is there a way to tell Weblogic to start with a certain number of threads in the thread pool?
    Thanks in advance

Thanks for sharing this usefule information about self-tuning thread.
We are using WebLogic 10.2, and also have some issues with self-tuning threads. I suspect that we need to adjust either min or max size for the self-tuning thread tool. I checked our config.xml, there is no information set there. Does this mean we use the default value from WebLogic? If yes, can you tell me what the default values are so I can decide if they are proper or not for our application.
    Thanks,
    David,

  • Why do we need work managers if the self-tuning pool is not limited ?

    Hi all,
AFAIK, the self-tuning thread pool in WLS 10.3 is not limited in size, meaning it can grow indefinitely.
On the other hand, work managers only make sense when there's a shortage in resources, and we need to decide what are the priorities to get a thread and CPU time.
So if, for example, I have a system that's only 20% busy even on the heaviest load, the work managers will never "kick in" actually, since there's "enough for everyone".
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

If you have more than a single application deployed and only have the default work manager, all apps compete equally and are also equally unable to be tuned in their thread usage.
If you instead have a unique work manager for each app, you can limit each app's consumption of resources - if needed - or alter each work manager's treatment / tolerance of hogging threads. For instance, an app that maintains sockets versus a webapp.
Having separate workmanagers allows you to tune the apps individually. If needed.

  • Self tuning threads are not releasing even though server running fine.

One of the cluster instance is running fine and serving the requests with good response but there self tuning threads are not releasing .I am not seeing any stuck threads in logs and no errors. why threads are not releasing. How we can troubleshoot this issue. May I know what are the cause of this.

  • ASR9001 SFP+ port 2 and port 3 disabled self

    Hello,
    Anybody met the same issues?
We have a ASR9001, when we test the SFP+ port, After several days running , the SFP+ port 2 and port3 disabled self.
The port is only disabled, but not err-disable.
We can use command "shutdown" and "no shutdown" to recovery these two ports.
The fault happened several times and we don't know how to solve it.
    Anybody knows the reason?

    Hi Michel,
Yes I know about FPD upgrade procedure by my hands)
Just in 4.3.1 I should install mini-px, install fpd-pie and install SMU. And only after that I can upgrade FPD.
Question about 5.1.1 was in followin meaning - do I need some SMU for possibility to upgrade FPD from 1.17 to 1.18 or for such FPD upgrade mini-px and fpd-pie for 5.1.1 enough?
In 5.1.x we need 'default-originate' command in vpvn4 AF in neighbor-group and 'allow vpn default-originate' in BGP-vrf-AF ipv4 -mode for generating default route in vrfs from ASR 9001 to some other PE:
    For example:
    router bgp 100neighbor-group VPNV4-DFLT address-family vpnv4 unicast   default-originate!  vrf RED  address-family ipv4 unicast   allow vpn default-originate

  • Disabling Diagnostics+Tuning packs in ASM

Am running ASM (11.1.0.6) on several Linux RHES 4.5 boxes and can't seem to disable the Diagnostics and Tuning options on the ASM instance, which I really should do as we're not licensed for it.
I did not explicitly accept use of the packs, for either the db instance, the host or the ASM instance (as you used to have to do on starting EM for the very first time after instance creation in 10g), however the performance options were available after instance creation and the 'Pack Access Agreed' column was ticked for the db instance, the host and the ASM instance.
I have been able to reset the options for the database and the host, and can also deselect those options for the ASM instance from the Management Pack Access page. This then greys out the displays asssociated with the packs in the ASM EM page.
However every time I log out, log back in and go back to the ASM section of Enterprise Manager, the diagnostic and tuning pack availability boxes are selected and the performance tab is no longer greyed out.
Connecting as sysasm via the command line shows the parameter control_management_pack_access as being set to DIAGNOSTICS+TUNING, however attempting to update that parameter directly via alter system set..... returns the error: ORA-15021 parameter not valid in ASM.
I can manually avoid using this functionality, but this isn't ideal and I'd hate to fall foul of Oracle licensing.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
    Thanks,
    Gavin

    Hi Gavin ,
I am not sure if this parameter is applicable for ASM.
Please check if below helps :
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/license.111/b28287/options.htm#CIHGFIAF
Also I would suggest to contact Oracle sales/support for the same.

  • SpamAssassin / Amavisd tuning - TCP active open: Failed connect() errors

I started this post as we were experiencing a problem with occassional delayed mail delivery to our mail store. As I continued writing it, I think that I've resolved it. But I wanted to post this anyway so if I'm doing things right it might help someone else; or, if I'm doing something wrong someone can correct me. :) For reference, we have a quad Sun v440, and process about 500,000 messages a day.
We were seeing messages like this in our log files:
09-Nov-2006 08:28:09.37 tcp_scan Q 1 [email protected] rfc822;[email protected] @tcp_scan-daemon:[email protected] TCP active open: Failed connect() Error: Connection timed out
example.com represents our local domain. The errors seemed to occur proportionally to the amount of incoming mail we received. That is, we saw more of them under load.
We are running SpamAssassin, Amavisd/clamav, and:
Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 6.2-5.01 (built Nov 22 2005)
    libimta.so 6.2-5.01 (built 11:57:57, Nov 22 2005)
    SunOS hostname 5.9 Generic_118558-11 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V440
This line seems to say that the message is in the tcp_scan channel, and cannot send to 127.0.0.1:10024 (amavisd) because that port isn't listening.
My amavisd max_servers was set at 15. After reading http://www.ijs.si/software/amavisd/amavisd-new-magdeburg-20050519.pdf and making a wild guess, I increased it to 30. The errors were less frequent, but still occurred.
The output of 'sar -d' showed that my local disk was experiencing upwards of 80% utilization. I moved the amavisd temp directory and the spamassassin bayes db to a san volume, and that sped everything up dramatically. The connect errors went away, clamav avg time per message is at 4 seconds down from 10. I am now receiving errors from spamassassin that say:
Nov 9 10:27:27 hostname.example.com spamd[21601]: prefork: server reached --max-children setting, consider raising it
My --max-children is set to 25 right now, and the server is cpu bound under heavy load, so I see no reason to raise it.
So this is my setup. I am no longer having an immediate problem, but comments/questions are welcome.
Config files related to my setup are below.

  • Can Managed Server self-tuning its performance without Admin Server?

I have an web application deployed on a managed server.
    My observation is:
    - If the Admin Server is not running, the application will keep accepting incoming external http requests and delayed the processing of them.
    - If the Admin Server is running, the application will start the processing soon after the incoming requests arrive.
Can any body explain the reason behind it? Only default work manager is used in the above case.
    Thanks

    This seems a strange behaviour.
How is structured the application (app/webApp/ejbs/...)?
How is targetted ? The target is only on the managed instance?

  • Consequences of disabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP in a Windows Server 2008 environment

Is NetBIOS required in a network with 2008 Servers and Windows 7 and Windows 8 computers?
There are two 2003 and one 2000 server.
    What functionality would we loose?
What are the major server functions or major applications that use NetBIOS.
Is there any way to find if any application or server is relying on NetBIOS.
    Any help is much appreciated.

Generally it is the browser service that populates network neighborhood. This technology is no longer used with newer OS like server 2008, windows 7/8.

  • Oracle.DataAccess 2.112.1.0 - Connection Pool Problem

    Hi,
Oracle.DataAccess 2.112.1.0 is having connection pool problem. The no. of TCP connections to Oracle database keep increasing untill the server's session run out of limit. My application created connections, use them, close them, and dispose them properly. When using previous Oracle.DataAccess 2.111.6.20, the no. of TCP connections do not increase.
My database connection string has "Min Pool Size = 3 and Max Pool Size = 150".
With 2.111.6.20 version, TCP connection stays at 3.
With 2.112.1.0, TCP connection keep increasing for every 5 minutes. I've tried to disable Self Tuning, but still can't prevent the connections from increasing.
Later today, I downloaded Oracle.DataAccess 2.112.1.2 (it comes with ODAC 11.2.0.1.2) and test again, the problem is resolved... no more connection increases... but.... it is only for 32 bit Windows.
Unfortunately, there is no Oracle.DataAccess 2.112.1.2 for 64 bit Windows Server 2008.

    Hi,
The only thing that jumps out within your problem description is that connections are being increased every 5 minutes. Are you sure its every 5 minutes and not 3 minutes which is the timing interval used by the Connection Pool facility to perform connection pool maintenance. If this occurs even when the application is idle then you could be running into the following known issue filed against 11.2.0.1.0 and fixed in 11.2.0.1.2.
Bug 9711600 - CONNECTIONS INCREASE BEYOND MAX POOL SIZE EVERY 3 MINUTE
This is specific to using the option CommandBehavior.CloseConnection when calling execute reader. Are you using this option and then also closing the connection in code before the datareader object is closed, if so you may be hitting this bug. You can also generate an ODP trace at level 15 of the behavior and if you see negative pool counts, that is also a diagnostic that points to this bug.
This is fixed in 11.2.0.1.0 Patch 3 or later for x64. If you have support, I recommend you open a service request to verify if this is your issue and if a patch set may help you.
    Regards
    Jenny B.

  • Set optimal db_cache_size param

I read this article http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-5031958.html because I want to set optimal db_cache_size parameter on my database. But I still don't know which oracle metric should check to draw such chart and choose best value for my database. Could anybody give me some advice?

The article you read is 8 years old, and doesn't apply to Oracle 10g and beyond, as Oracle 10g and beyond are self-tuning.
Setting db_cache_size in 10g and beyond will disable self-tuning.
So if you are running 10g and beyond (yet again you didn't include your version) the best thing you can do is
    - not to read 8 year old articles
    - not to set db_cache_size
    and better still
be very cautious about anything Donald K Burleson writes, as his tuning approach often includes generic measures, and most other experts like Jonathan Lewis, Tom Kyte, Richard Foote, Cary Millsap and lot of others
    fundamentally disagree with him.
Finally: how to determine db_cache_size is in the article, so I suggest you re-read it. Hint: especially read the bits on the cache advisor. Try to be not distracted by the impressive multi-color graphs.

Please test it with release version as there may be a lot of things which are fixed after beta.
Also please note down the statement cache size your application was using earlier. Starting from 2.111.7.10/2.111.7.20, the statement cache size is automatically tuned by default. This feature is called self tuning. You may disable self tuning and specify your own statement cache size as usual. To know more about self tuning, please consult ODP.NET Developer's Guide.
I would suggest that you first upgrade to the release version 2.111.7.20. If that does not solve the problem, you may either
    - specify MaxStatementCacheSize
    or
    - disable self tuning and provide your own statement cache size

  • Memory leakage issue in Oracle-DOTNET environment

    Hi,
One of my customer is facing a issue of memory leakage issue with their ASP.NET application. Following are the environment details
    1. ASP.NET 3.5 application (Uses some Infragistics controls for grids)
    2. SSRS for reporting
    3. Oracle Server as database (details given below)
The memory leakage occurs while running load testing in his test environment.
The memory is consumed (in tune of 1.2 GB) and then performance is hit.
The memory dump is analyzed and we found Oracle client eating up a lot of memory which is not released.
We tried to use 11g driver also but without any improvements.
    Environment Details :
    1. Oracle server version –
Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Prod
    PL/SQL Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production
    CORE 10.2.0.1.0 Production
TNS for 32-bit Windows: Version 10.2.0.1.0 - Production
    NLSRTL Version 10.2.0.1.0 – Production
    2. Client version
We are using following oracle client version SQL*Plus: Release 10.2.0.1.0 – Production
(For performance purpose we have used following client version. SQL*Plus: Release 11.1.0.7.0 – Production)
    3. ODP.NET version
    Version of Oracle.DataAccess.dll is 2.111.7.10
It will be great if any body can help on this issue and guide us on the right track.
    Thanks in advance.
    Thanks & Regards,
