Discoverer Connections

Hi
I am in the process of doing some testing of BI Discoverer 10.1.2.0.2 as we are about to upgrade from Discoverer 9i.
I am trying to create a Dynamic connection to Discoverer plus so that when a user clicks on the connection they have to enter their username and password. Is this possible? I have created private and public connections.
Any help on this would be appreciated.
Regards
Seán Garvan

Hi Seán
Private connections will do what you want but if you want these to be available across the whole system, asopposed to only using a cookie on the local machine, you will need to enable Single Sign-ON. With this enabled, after the user authenticates their own private connection will appear.
There's no way you can have the same connection accept a different username because at the very least the username is embedded into the connection.
Does any of this help?
Regards
Michael

  • Is there a way to manage your discoverer connections other than through OEM

In chapter 6 of the administrator guide of Discoverer Admin it states to manage your Discoverer connections through OEM is there another way to do that other than using OEM.
Help, Our DBA wants to know why I want OEM. I have tried to explain.
    Can you help me?

    Hi
You can create private connections, which are local to your machine and browser. Alternately, you can use SSO connections, provided these are activated by your administrator. Neither of these connections require management via the OEM.

  • Old connections not showing on Discoverer Connections page after a REFRESH

    Hello all,
I am having a weird issue with Discoverer connections after a recent refresh of our DEV AS environment from TST.
Before I proceed further, let me give you some details on our environments.
We have recently upgraded our version 9.0.4.1 AS DEV and TST environments to version 10.1.2.3. We also patched our Portal to version 10.1.4.2. Our Infrastructure, Middle Tier, and Metadata Repository Oracle Homes are on one host (AIX 5.3), and our Portal Repository (Customer) database is located on another host (AIX 5.3). Our Repository databases are version 9.2.0.8.
That said, this is my first refresh attempt at version 10.1.2.3. I was able to complete the refresh (after troubleshooting some issues) fine and was able to bring our DEV Portal up and things looked fine. But when I get to the Discoverer Viewer connections page, I don't see any connections listed there.
During the refresh I did an "ssomig -export" and "ssomig -import" successfully and the logs showed no errors. When I look in the ORASSO.WWSSO_PSEX_USER_INFO$ table, I can see the Connections data. But somehow from the Discoverer connections page nothing is visible. If I create a new connection, everything seems to be normal with the way Discoverer works. But I am not able to figure out how to make the old connections show up on the Connections page.
I have tried doing an "ssomig -import" a couple of times with no luck. Can anyone help me out? I am not sure what is going on.
    Thanks.

Can we have some other user (nor orcladmin) who could create discoverer connections with capi?
If so, what privileges, rights does he need?

    Hi Juanje,
I'm afraid I don't have an answer but we also wanted to do the same thing since there should be no reason for users to know the database details. We tried to insert values into the table you mentioned but found that there was a problem with the encryption of passwords (there are PL/SQL functions to encrypt/decrypt but they did not work).
We were told that no official interface or utility will be available to do this, so if anyone else has successfully managed this we would be very interested.

  • Private discoverer connections not visible in combobox in portal

    We are using:
Oracle Portal Version: 10.1.2.0.2 (Build: 139)
Oracle AS BI & Forms: 10.1.2 (without any additional patches)
SSO has been enabled for discoverer using the mod_osso.conf configuration and works correctly. We are able to create private connections in the discoverer plus login screen that is shown after SSO authentication and we have checked that they get populated in the table orasso.wwsso_psex_user_info$.
Discoverer Portlets have been installed and the provider has been configured and we can correctly add the portlets to the portal page.
The problem we have is the following:
Even though in the portlet configuration we have chosen the option "Display different data by allowing users to customize database connection", when the user chooses to customize the portlet and choose his private connection, only the public connection shows up in the list.
Has anyone else encountered this problem and found a solution?
    Thanks in advance

We encountered the same problem. Oracle had us reinstall AS with the middle-tier and BI-tier on the same port. After that we could see the private connections through Portal.
Follow-up with Oracle for more information -- I only know the solution overview, not the details.

  • In which file discoverer connections stored

    hi,

Also I don't fully understand what exactly happens when regeneration of GUIDs is done. Are user guids changed (where?) or only group guids are changed? Or maybe only some references in webcatalog and repository are changed?Good information. I never took a detailed dive into the GUID's in the system-jazn-data.xml file. To answer your other part of the question, here is what the documentation says:
"After changing the directory server that is used as the data source for the authentication provider, it is best practice to update the user GUIDs. If the same user name exists in both directory servers (original and new), then the original user GUID might conflict with the user GUID that is contained in new directory server. A refresh forces the system to reference the user GUID that is contained in the new directory server. Authentication errors might result if the GUIDs are not refreshed and the system detects a mismatch for the user GUID.
The GUIDs that are stored in the Oracle BI Presentation Catalog or in the RPD file can be resynchronized and refreshed as described in the following procedure. " ( http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E21764_01/core.1111/e10105/testprod.htm#BABFIHFJ ).
So I believe the reference to the User GUID's are resynchronized.

  • How to hide discoverer connection page after opening discoverer plus?

    Hi,
I invoke the following url in browser window 1 to open Oracle DIscoverer Plus.
I notice the browser window 1 will open a window (say i call it browser window 2) to display the Oracle Discoverer Plus application.
Once the Oracle Discoverer Plus java applet is fully loaded, the browser window 1 will show the Connect to Discoverer Plus page.
I wonder if we can configure not to show this page as my users might confuse to see a few existing connections listed there and in fact if possible, I don't want user to see the list of connections.
Anyway to get rid of the page?
    Please advise.
    Thank you.

I am trying to use URL parameters to keep Discoverer Plus from launching a new window after login. I notice that what works in Discoverer Viewer does not work in Discoverer Plus.
The following works with Discoverer Viewer :
    <iframe src="https://cohort50.spinsys.com:8251/discoverer/viewer?framedisplaystyle=embedded"
    width="100%" height=100%></iframe>
After Viewer login the next page displays in the same window, just as I want it to.
Discoverer Plus behaves differently. If I try this with Discoverer Plus a new window is launched after successful login. I also tried adding the pluspopup=false parameter to the URL, but the problem remains.
Neither of the following two fragments prevent a new window from launching after successful login to Discoverer Plus :
    <iframe src="https://cohort50.spinsys.com:8251/discoverer/plus?framedisplaystyle=embedded"
    width="100%" height=100%></iframe>
    <iframe src="https://cohort50.spinsys.com:8251/discoverer/plus?framedisplaystyle=embedded&_plus_popup=false"
    width="100%" height=100%></iframe>
Does anybody have any advice for me? What must I do?

  • Discoverer Plus loses connection when COLLAPSING in Hierarchy!

I am getting an error saying that' Discoverer connection is lost. Please contact your admin" when I am collapsing hierarchies. Did you ever encounter this kind of error ever? I have like 6 levels of hierarchies(date hierarchy, like yr,season, quarter etc)...So one hierarchy is Company ->Year and other one is Year->Season->Quarter so on.... So when I collapse one by one level its ok... but when i do it all at once from the top, i.e Company, it loses connection!!
Is it some kind of a bug???
    Thanks a lot,
    rocky

    Hi
Well it does sound like the hierarchies are to blame, although to be honest with you I've seen Discoverer losing its connection for something far less trivial than that. The most common reasons for losing a connection are network issues and being out of memory either on the Discoverer client or on the server. I'd suspect that memory is an issue.
Now, your second issue relates to the use of those hierarchies. Are they perhaps date hierarchies as opposed to item hierarchies? If so, whilst they are really quite clever, they do tend to cause more problems than they solve. Personally, if you are using date hierarchies, I would create a materialized view or table of your fiscal time and then create one folder for each date in your folder. I'd drop the Oracle date hierarchies in a heart beat but this is easier said than done.
    Does this help?

  • How to skip "Connect to Oracle BI Discoverer" window while redirecting URL

    Hi,
When I am redirecting my discoverer plus URL from my UI screen by providing connection details discoverer first open "Connect to Oracle BI Discoverer" window and then it automatically redirecting to reporting window in which report is getting opened.
How can I stop "Connect to Oracle BI Discoverer" window to be opened first. I don't want to open this window because I am directly passing my connection details in URL parameter itself.
While redirecting, only report window should be opened.
How can I do this ?
    regards,
    devang

    Hello Devang
Do you have a copy of my Oracle Discoverer Handbook (available from amazon)?
If so, page 899 covers this scenario.
To help you I have posted the question and answer below:
    QUESTION:
When we choose a connection or enter the connection details at the Discoverer 10.1.2 Plus login page, the screen flickers and then the connections page is displayed again. After this the Applet starts but in a different window. Is there a way to make Plus start in the same window?
ANSWER: By default, Discoverer Plus is designed to launch in a separate window from the connection screen. However, to answer your question, yes, you can make Discoverer Plus use the same connection. To do this, you append the following to the end of the URL:
    *?_plus_popup=false&framedisplaystyle=embedded*
If your standard URL is http://server.my.com:7778/discoverer/plus
    you change this to: http://server.my.com:7778/discoverer/plus?_plus_popup=false&framedisplaystyle=embedded
This time you will see the Discoverer connections page, applet loading, and Plus interface all appear in the same window. You will also see loading messages and an hourglass display as the session starts, loads, and renders.
    Hope this helps
    Best wishes
    Michael
PS. I would urge everyone who hasn't got a copy of the handbook to get one. It is packed with more than 1,000 pages of information, tricks and tips dedicated to Discoverer.

I have a problem connecting Disocverer Plus to DB 10g.
DB 10g is located on a different server than Discoverer. All windows environment. When I enter DB name it gives me ORA-12154 error.
Question – I searched all the documents and it doesn’t say how to configure DB 10g to work with Discoverer. Could some one help me pointing me in a right direction? Do I have to create Data Warehouse or can I connect to the DB directly.
I added Database connection on the DB 10g listener. Do I have to do it on the BI listener as well. So complicated and no guidance.

    Make sure that:

  • On discoverer portlets and using a public connection

I need a quick help please, I've asked our DBA to create a new PUBLIC connection (discoverer connection which the DBA created using the IAS admin).
When I use this new connection, my worksheet can't be publish because of the following error. I tried to google on it and search in the forums but nothing comes back. Is there something I should ask the DBA to setup for this public connection?
    This is the error:

    Hello ,
On Discoverer 10.1.2 there are no restrictions on password field for PUBLIC connections, this mean that the connection can be also created empty password field. Your exception report the following cause "connection password missing". So, I assume that if the PUBLIC connection is created correctly and the password is provided, you should be able to connect without any exceptions.
On the other hands, if the password is not provided during the PUBLIC connection creation, you shouldn't get an exception but you should be prompted to enter the password.
By the way, this is not a bug, I guess this is more an issue in your environment, which probably you could be able to workaround to re-associating the Middle Tier with the Infrastructure :

    Hi everyone
There is a known issue when using AIX, HP-ux or Linux against a 10.1.x database. If this is your scenario, then you need to obtain and read the appropriate release notes. For your information, the necessary instructions are attached here:
When using Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1.x) for the Metadata Repository or after upgrading the Metadata Repository to Oracle Database 10g Release 1, you might see the following error on the OracleBI Discoverer Plus Connection pages, the OracleBI Discoverer Viewer Connection pages, and the Public Connection definition page in Application Server Control:

    ORA-06512: at "ORASSO.WWSSO_UTL" line 728
ORA-28231: no data passed to obfuscation toolkit
ORA-06512: at line 1 Unable to retrieve connection list
To resolve this issue, make the following changes in the Metadata Repository database:
    1. Edit the init%ORACLE_SID%.ora file in the following location:
    DB_install_home/dbs
    2. Add the following line to this file:
event="10946 trace name context forever, level 36"
    3. If an spfile%ORACLE_SID%.ora exists in either the dbs folder or the database folder, rename the file to spfile%ORACLE_SID%.bak. Changes to init%ORACLE_SID%.ora are not loaded if the database server finds an spfile.
    4. Log in as a sysadmin.
    5. At the SQL prompt, shut down then start up the database server.
    6. Restart the OracleBI Discoverer server using the command opmnctl restartall.

    and then searching for 06512.
Neither Windows nor Unix appear to be plagued this way, at least not so far. :-)
    I hope this helps

  • Creating batch Discoverer private connections from SSO information

We have a portal that has single sign on the discoverer. We need a way for the RAD descriptor we defined in the portal for a user (This being that database connection details a portal user has) to be the private
discoverer connection. We are able to query the sso information via a script we found on Metalink. Now we are searching for a way to create private Discoverer connections by batch for these details. Please Help as we can not enter 400 private connections.

If creating the connections ahead of time, why not use the CAPI script. In the past (9.0.2 time frame) before Oracle created the CAPI utility, there was a plsql script floating around, but I would use CAPI since it is the supported utility.
Any manual manipulation of the tables could introduce corruption and leave you in an unsupported state or situation where you have to restore from backup.
There are a few caveats with CAPI that I have run into.. these MetaLink documents may help you avoid them:
463346.1     Private Connections Not Displayed When Created With CAPI
This one is especially trick as putting enableAppsSSOConnection="true" in the configuration.xml if you are not integrating with E-BS SSO is not intuitive, but it indeed needs to be there.419805.1     Creating A Private Connection With The Discoverer Connections API (CAPI) Fails With 'Error message 'Problem in Authenticating the request. Check Username/Password ...'
They syntax is in the 10.1.2.2 Release Notes.
    Other comments welcomed.

    Steve.
