Disk images suddenly will not unmount.

One of several intermittent troubles I am having on my new 24" iMac with Leopard:
suddenly when using disk images none will unmount. Only launching Disk Utility and unmounting them there works. Or logging out of my account. The eject symbol next to the disk image's name doesn't work. Dragging the disk image to the trash doesn't work either. If I have a disk image open and click eject it's Finder window closes, but he disk image remains mounted.
Three wipes of the HD and reinstalls of Leopard have failed to fix this issue.

I've got this one too. It also happens with external drives and not just disk images.
I made a little apple script which ejects disks and disks images.
on open some_items
repeat with this_item in some_items

do shell script "hdiutil detach " & quoted form of POSIX path of this_item

end open
open the above in Script editor and save it as an application. Put this application (or an alias to it) on the desktop. To unmount one or more disks drop them onto this application (you can do it with several disks at once). I find that this works a bit faster than launching disk utility and ejecting the drives manually. Still, it would be preferable if they just fixed it.

    Sounds like you may need to repair the Disk Permissions on your drive where your images are stored.

  • External Time Machine Disk Will Not Unmount

    This past weekend I did clean installs of Lion on new SSD drives in my MacBook and MacPro.  The MacBook backs up to a Time Capsule with Time Machine and is working perfectly.  The MacPro backs up fine and says the backup is completed but it will not unmount the external Time Machine disk I use for the backup after completion.  This was not a problem using the same setup with Snow Leopard.  I looked at the Console which says Backup completed successfully.  Any idea what is going on with this?  Thanks in advance.

    Wait a minute . . . I missed that before. 
    Is that disk connected directly to the Mac?  If so, no, Time Machine doesn't unmount directly-connected drives after a backup, only sparse bundles on network drives.

  • Time Machine Backup will NOT unmount

    Can anyone help me troubleshoot? I'm using Time Machine with Time Capsule. After updating to 10.5.5, I've been seeing some odd behavior. Backup prepares, completes and finishes properly, but the image will not unmount. I tried manually unmounting it with mixed results. Sometimes it would do so properly and others it would not saying it was in use by another application.
    All firmware updates are installed.

    It's unclear which disk icon you're referring to.
    You see when Time Machine initiates a backup it first mounts the Time Capsule hard disk (Green drive with Clock), then it mounts the disk image of your backups (White drive icon).
    Often, the TC disk (Green drive with Clock) will NOT unmount on it's own, particularly if you have manually mounted it already. That OK, subsequent backups will proceed successfully with the TC disk mounted on the desktop.
    However, if the disk image (White drive icon) does not unmount once the backup is complete then you have problem. Frequently the very next backup sill fail, because Time Machine thinks it is still "in use." See an article on this here:

    My WD 2tb external hard drive will not unmount from my MacBook Pro. It no longer even shows up in finder, however it does show up in Disk Utility. I have tired so many of the suggestions on the internet all to a fail.
    I keep getting the message to be sure that all applications are closed before ejecting the drive. I have no clue how to tell which appliactions are using the external drive to shut them off. I turned off Time Machiene to be safe. 
    I don't need anything on the external drive, I am just trying to erase it, save my current info, and migrate it to my new MacBook Pro.
    I have been about four days now with this issue all over the internet, in this community, and watching videos on everything and nothing about this topic to a fail.
    I think I am doomed and have lossed this external drive because of some wierd application that will NEVER close on my hard drive for it to disconnect correctly. It's annoying.
    Does anyone have a solution?

    Have you trie using another USB port? Can you test the USB ports with other USB devices to assure they are working? You may want to reinstall OS X in case there has been a driver glitch.
    Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
    If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
    Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

    a dialog box displays: "Can not open a work file because the file is locked or you do not have access privileges necessary Use the command." Properties "in Windows Explorer to unlock the file." appeared 2 times every time I want to run photoshop.

    It is possible to open photoshop as qu'adminsitrateur but I do little more import files drag and drop. (Very unpleasant, I lose a lot of time)
    This is the second time it happens, I reformatted my PC for 8 days, it is parfairtement own.

    Your response in no way applies to my message to you.  I did not submit a print screen nor did I submit a image to you of any dialogeue box.  Your canned response is simpy pathethic.  Due to your and Adobe's inabilty and/or lack of interest in supporting paid customers' difficulties with your software, I will continue to run assorted fix-it scans and attempt to fix Adobe's inabilty to launch on my own.
    I will be seeking an alternative to your software - I can no longer rele y upon Adobe - which I have been using for at least 12 years...please notify Adobe that they have lost the long standing allegiance of a user - of the largest winery of the world.  BIG mistake!  Once I find an alternative, I will now do my best to convert the entire winery to the alternative.  All of this originated because I purchased the Photosoft 7.0 software for use to benefit a local non-profit that the winery has been supporting for 45 years - HUGE mistake on Adobe. Hopefully, this will teach them a lesson. 
    Just because a customer appears to be a individual user does not mean that they do not have influeunce elsewhere...the company that you suport is about to lose a huge looser.  It is Adobe's loss...there are plenty of other alternatives out there.
    I work full time to support myself financially...and I volunteer my time to a local non-profit art gallery (where I am on the executive board)  to support my artistic interests....shame on Adobe for ignoring the individual just because they appear to be a simple user.  By the way...I also sit on two boards at the local college....my research on alternatives to Adobe will certainly be shared with them - especially in these budget cutting times.

    Do this:
    - Plug in you ipod in you latop/Computer like usual and then hold the power btton and the home button at the same to and after you ipod should connect but once you connect restore it right away.
    _ if that didn't work. Try going to the closes apple store in your location and tell them the problem your having with you ipad.

    I have received to following error from at least three different applications when they have attempted to auto-update recently: X "does not have permission to write to the application's directory! Are you running off a disk image? If not, ask your system administrator for help." 
    I am not running off a disk image and I have admin privileges... Not sure what the problem is, but it just started happening (a week or two ago) and I have never previously had a problem with these applications auto-updating.  I have repaired permissions and attempted other "fixes" found on the interweb, but nothing works.  Also, this is only happening on my iMac (27" Intel i5) and not my MacBook Pro (17" Intel i5) -- both are running Lion.  Please help!

    If you updated using the default install (merge) from before Tiger, you may be seeing an issue that we saw when Leopard first came out last year.
    Not sure of the fix - it was not simple - but if you search back in these forums you might find something that will help. I believe it deals with the numbers assigned to accounts (501, etc).
    If you open your Accounts Preferences and unlock the padlock, right-click Advanced Options and read your User ID and Group ID. Let us know what they are.
    Now, in the other user admin account, do the same thing.
    One of the real experts who knows much more about this than I may be able to then help.

  • IPhoto suddenly will not drag

    My iPhoto suddenly will not drag and drop, nor can I email, or upload to Facebook from iPhoto. I can upload from my iPhone just fine but can not use the photos once they are in iPhoto. I have never had this problem before, it just started. Any suggestions as to what might be causing this?

    The disk must be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, exporting, saving edits and sharing the photos.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)

        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

    Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
    Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
    You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi.     You state you updated your iMac to OS X 10.8.5.  Did you update iTunes as well?
    If so, you may find the calendar sync options under Info.

    Connect your device to your computer.
    Click the device button, then click Info.
    Select the items you want to sync.
    Click Apply.

    Image Capture will not recognize my Epson Workforce 615. It would not recognize my HP 4280 either.
    I can print but I cannot scan using Image Capture. Scanning through Epson scan or HPScan Pro works.
