Displaying carriage returns from database query

hi i'm fairly new to colfusion but have a good basic
understanding.
i'm trying to build a community website that has a guestbook
and forums. i want to build these from scratch.
i'm using cfmx7 and sqlserver 2005.
the problem i'm having is when my cfm page retrieves posts
made to the guestbook or forum, the carriage return characters are
missing. posts are coming out all on one line.
how do i get the retrieved posts to display new lines and
paragraphs the way they were input into the database?
just like these forums do?
thanx so much. adella.

Here is the code. Just replace body with your db field name.
<cfoutput>
#Replace(body, newLine, "<br>", "ALL")#
</cfoutput>

  • Is it possible to count the rows returned from a query?

    Hello,
    When using JDBC is there anyway of finding out the number of
    rows returned from a query before actually getting each row?
    In Forms 4.5 you can use the count_query function, does anyone
    know of an equivalent function or work around in JDBC and/or
    SQLJ?
    Thanks.

    Thanks for the advice, I'm currently using SELECT COUNT(*) but
    I'm looking for a more efficient way of doing it. If I SELECT
    COUNT each time then I have to prepare and execute a SQL
    statement each time. What I want to do it execute a single SQL
    statement to return my results and somehow find out the number
    of rows in the resultset without having to go back to the
    database.

    Hi.
    In the execute method of the PreloadPayVoucherAction class that is an Action subclass, I suppose that you should set the bean that contains the parameters you want to display in the jsp in the request scope. For example, you should have:
    request.setAttribute("userContainer", userContainer);
    This ensures that the userContainer object is set in the request scope and is accessible through all jsps throughout this request. After the execute method of the PreloadPayVoucherAction class exits, finally, the control is passed to the jsp page, where the request.getAttribute("userContainer.accountName") should work.

  • XMLAttribute unable to handle multiple values returning from a query

    Hi Guys,
    I have to design the format of the data returning from a query in XML. For this i have used xmlelement and xmlattribute
    the query goes like this
    SELECT '<?xml version="1.0" ?>'||' '||XMLELEMENT("imageData",
    XMLATTRIBUTES(LI.GROUPNO as "imageName", 'PNG'as "imageType", '2.0' as "version", 'com.snapon.sbs' as "xmlns"),
    XMLELEMENT("callouts",
    XMLATTRIBUTES('roundedRectangle' as "shape"),
    XMLELEMENT("callout",
    XMLATTRIBUTES((SELECT IO.PNC_KEYNO FROM PFEALIOCR IO WHERE IO.BASECATALOGNO = LI.BASECATALOGNO AND LI.GROUPNO = IO.GROUPNO) as "label"),
    XMLELEMENT("point",
    XMLATTRIBUTES((SELECT IO.COORDINATESX1 FROM PFEALIOCR IO WHERE IO.BASECATALOGNO = LI.BASECATALOGNO AND LI.GROUPNO = IO.GROUPNO) as "x",(SELECT IO.COORDINATESY1 FROM PFEALIOCR IO WHERE IO.BASECATALOGNO = LI.BASECATALOGNO AND LI.GROUPNO = IO.GROUPNO) as "y")))))
    FROM PFEALIGIL LI
    WHERE LI.DELETEFLAG <> 'D'
    here he logic is the one groupno from pfealigil and the corresponding pnc_keyno that are related to groupno are fetched here. but here since multiple pnc_keyno are returning xmlattributes is unable to handle. I want to design the xml in this format
    <?xml version="1.0" ?>
    <imageData imageName="ISDH0001104"
    imageType="PNG" version="2.0" xmlns="com.snapon.sbs">
    <callouts shape="roundedRectangle">

    </callout>
    <callout label="1"><point x="805" y="343"/>
    </callout>
    </callouts>
    </imageData>
    like here one image name all those pnc_keyno that are valid should come in this way as above. Please let me know if anything is unclear to you

  • Problem with displaying the data from Database on swf file.

    Hi ,
      I am new to flash.Thanks in Advance Please help me....
    Actually my requirement is my application consists a button(submit_Btn) when we click on the button(submit_Btn), each time it must to database(through servlet) and brings the data from database and places it on the flash swf file.Here my problem is for the first time when we click on the button it goes to database and place the data(which was returned from database) on the swf file.Next  when we click on the button for the second time(or anytime) it is not going  and bringing the new data from database(if some data is modified in database or not),Infact it is showing the old data(the data that was collected from previous ClickListener) only on the swf file and it is also not showing any complile time or run time error.
    my Code looks like this:
    submit_Btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,onCheck2);
    function onCheck2(evnt:MouseEvent):void {
    var xmlLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
        var xmlurl:String = "http://localhost:8888/xmlServlet";
        var xmlrequest:URLRequest = new URLRequest(xmlurl);
    xmlLoader.dataFormat = URLLoaderDataFormat.TEXT;
    xmlLoader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, xmlcompleteHandler);
    xmlLoader.load(xmlrequest);
    function xmlcompleteHandler(event:Event):void {
        var loader:URLLoader = URLLoader(event.target);
        var succData:String=loader.data;
            var xmlData:XML = new XML();
            var xmlList:XMLList;
            xmlData = XML(loader.data);
            xmlList = xmlData.children();
            for (var i=0; i<xmlList.length(); i++) {
                for (var n=0; n<xmlData.UserHumanap[i].HumanapDot.length(); n++) {
                        var x_coordinate:Number = xmlData.UserHumanap[i].HumanapDot[n].@x;
                        var y_coordinate:Number = xmlData.UserHumanap[i].HumanapDot[n].@y;
                        var point2:Point = new Point(x_coordinate,y_coordinate);
                        var circle:Sprite = new Sprite();
                        circle.graphics.beginFill(0x00ff00);
                        circle.graphics.drawCircle(point2.x,point2.y,3);   //Placing the data as dots on the swf file
    Thanks in Advance.......Please Help me..........
    its Urgent..........
    Thanks,
    Swarthi

    Checkout following line in your code
    var xmlurl:String = "http://localhost:8888/xmlServlet";
    now change it to
    var xmlurl:String = "http://localhost:8888/xmlServlet?random="+String(MAth.random());
    I think you will get the point now

  • Reports not retaining carriage returns from htmldb_item.textarea

    I’m created a tabular form for multi row updates using htmldb_item.textarea for one of the fields. When I update the tabular form it keeps any carriage returns in this field, which is good. I then created a “PL/SQL function body returning a SQL Query” report for printing purposes. The problem is that the field populated by the htmldb_item.textarea does not retain any of the carriage returns in the report.
    I enter the following in the textarea on the tabular form:
    Line 1
    Line 2
    Line 3
    The report I created then displays the data as:
    Line 1 Line 2 Line 3
    I need the report to display the data the same as it appears on the tabular form.
    I tried this in my report from reading other similar situations on this forums, but didn’t work.
    replace("TEXTAREA",''||chr(13)||'',''||
    ||'') as title
    Anyone know of a solution?

    How about this?
    Go the page where you can edit the report column attribute - here is the bread crumb to help you figure out what I am talking about
    Home>Application Builder>Application 99999>Page Definition>Report Attributes>Column Attributes
    The second box in this page is Column formatting, you will find 4 text boxes (Number / Date Format, CSS Class, CSS Style, Highlight words) and a text area (HTML Expression). In the text area replace #COLUMN_ALIAS# with <PRE>#COLUMN_ALIAS</PRE>. You will get your newlines without tweaking the query or removing Strip HTML. Strip HTML is a security feature that I would not disable. On the down side you will loose some of the ability to format like fonts etc (:-(,
    Here is why you loose the newlines in the report. When browsers render html they have the liberty to reformat it. When reformating they can play around with whitespaces including new lines. To force a new line you have to use the BR tag or you can say the text is preformated using the PRE tags.

  • Generate an xml file from Database query results

    Hi, can anyone help me out with this problem I'm having. What are the steps in creating an xml file directly from the results of a database query. I currently have a very simply process that queries a database via a partner link. The query returns the data but it's from this point that I am stuck. I need to create an xml file with the data along with the xml tags. I've looked at dozens of tutorials with no luck.
    I would greatly appreciate help with this.
    bpel rookie

    Should be quite simple.
    Create another partnerlink, configure it to use the file adapter, and write to an XML file. In this case you need to create an XML Schema (.xsd) of the file you want to create.
    Before you write to the file, either add assign steps to copy individual attributes or use a transform activity to convert from the database format to the file (xml) format.

  • How to count no of records returned from a query?

    Hello,
    I need to find out how many records displayed from a query without writing any other queries.
    i mean that.
    I have a query such as:
    query = "select * from users";
    and the resultset for it is rs.
    and i need to display how many records fetched from this query without using any other query such as "select count(user_id) from users" etc.
    Is there any function ?

    No, unfortunately there is no method or property that will tell you how many rows have been returned by a query.
    People use many different techniques.
    1.The simplest would be, keep incrementing a counter in while ( rs.next() ) and at the end you'll have the count. But only at the end, after the loop.
    2. Run another query with count(*) just to fetch the count.
    3. Run the same query twice, once for counting and then again for printing out. Very dumb idea though, might as well do 2. suggested above.
    4. If you have a scrollable resultset, you could go to the lastRecord and then getRow number and hence know how many there are and then rewind the resultset. I don't know how advisable using scrollable resultsets is.
    5. Create a slightly clumsy query like : select count(*) as "totalcount", emp_id, emp_name, emp_email, emp_phone from employees group by emp_id, emp_name, emp_email, emp_phone. You'll need to use the group by clause since count() is an aggregate function and you can't mix aggregate functions and columns unless you add the group by to all the columns you're fetching.

  • How to display output of from clause query?

    Hi. I am using Forms Developer 10g. I have a datablock which uses a from_clause_query. In my from_clause_query, i used a WITH AS SELECT.

  • Interactive Report: how can I display carriage returns?

    Hello everybody.
    Here is my problem: I created a table containing a field COMMENT varchar2(4000) and using APEX 4.1 I built an interactive report on it.
    Users can fill the field COMMENT with sentences on different rows, ex:
    " this is the first line
    this is the second line
    this is the third line"
    This is correctly managed in the FORM, where I defined the field COMMENT as 'Text Area', but in the REPORT I wasn't able to set it in a way which permits to see it whit the carriage returns: the content is displayed on one row only : "this is the first linethis is the second linethis is the third line".
    I tried and set all the possible field types, but I found no ways to display the content exactly as it is (with carriage returns).
    Obviously I cannot use HTML
    , since I cannot ask users to digit it when inserting their text.
    Could someone suggest me how to reach this result? In need to use the interactive report because the searching/filtering tool is fundamental.
    Thanks in advance,
    Daniele

Put this in the page HTML Header, replacing the <tt>T_EMP_NAME</tt> etc selectors with the actual <tt>id</tt> attributes of your column headers:
    <style type="text/css">
    .apexir_WORKSHEET_DATA td[headers="T_EMP_NAME"] {
      white-space: pre;
    </style>
    Interactive Report Control Break disregards HTML Header style.

  • Building in carriage returns using Report Query

    I am using Report Querys and Report Layouts. I am trying to build in some carriage returns that will be recognized in my rtf template. I tried using 'chr(10)', br's etc, but it doesn't work. It prints the characters instead of doing the carriage return. Am Imissing something?

    Bob,
    The string literal 'chr(10)' will not help you much.
    select 'mystring'||'chr(10)'||'mystring' from dual; -- returns 'mystringchr(10)mystring'
    select 'mystring'|| chr(10) ||'mystring' from dual; -- returns 'mystring
    mystring'Cheers,

  • Remove carriage returns from a field in an oracle table

    I have a field that is defined as a LONG in my oracle table; the data contained in this field has carriage returns/line feeds (it's free form text); as i'm selecting data from this field, i need the carriage returns removed so that the data from this field all appears on one line.
    I tried using the TRANSLATE function to convert the carriage returns to something else, but that doesn't work.
    Example:
    Select comment from Notes:
    COMMENT
    the applicant called for an appointment;
    an exam was scheduled for 4/1/05 at 9am;
    called applicant to confirm app
    this needs to be extracted as: "the applicant called for an appointment; an exam was scheduled for 4/1/05 at 9am; called applicant to confirm app"
    How can i do this? Can the decode function be used to remove the carriage returns in this field?

    when i used translate its giving correctly,
    SQL> ed
    Wrote file afiedt.buf
    1 select translate('the applicant called for an appointment;
    2 an exam was scheduled for 4/1/05 at 9am;
    3 called applicant to confirm app
    4 this needs to be extracted as: "the applicant called for an appointment; an exam was scheduled
    5 How can i do this? Can the decode function be used to remove the carriage returns in this field
