Displays in System Preferences blank with new Samsung LCD

On my G4, which has an ATI Rage Pro 16 MB AGP card and an ATI Rage PCI card installed, I now get a blank displays control panel since connecting a new Samsung SyncMaster 730b monitor to either card. The second monitor is a Gateway EV700. If I disconnect one monitor, I get the displays panel back, as soon as I reconnect and restart, it is blank again. I obviously cannot rearrange monitors, although I can change resolutions in my displays icon in the menu bar.
I purchased the AGP card and installed it after installing OS 10.3.9, although when I had an old Apple 720 monitor connected the displays panel worked fine. I have tried connecting the Samsung with both a DVI and a VGA cable (has both options) and nothing works to fix the problem.
Short of re-installing the OS, does anyone know a fix?
G4 500 MHz (AGP graphics)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Thanks Grant.
I tried this as well, still no luck though, I still get a blank panel.
I took a chance and put the ATI Displays software on the machine, and still the displays panel is blank. The ATI cards still see the monitors and identify them correctly in the ATI control panel installed in system prefs.
At this point I think I just have to live with it, or try installing Tiger, which I have been contemplating. I am a little hesitant though as Tiger hogs a bit more ram and is a larger installation; plus the G4 is an old machine and other than this problem runs everything very well.

  • No arrangements under display on system preference

I have a mid 2012 macbook pro and there is no arrangements under my display on system preferences so I cannot connect a cord from my computer to the TV using HDMI cords.

Let me try and sort this out. You have a regular MacBookPro and want to connect your TV via an HDMI cable to use as an external monitor.
By default, a regular MBP only has a Thunderbolt port capable of driving an external monitor. You need to purchase a TB to HDMI adapter/dongle to go between the Mac and the TV. When you have that, as soon as you plug it in, the Mac will automatically detect the TV, usually evident cause the TV will start displaying something and the Mac will at least flicker, if not readjust its screen. You can then open System Preferences / Displays and make the necessary adjustments. Can have two modes of operation: Mirrored or not. Mirrored means the contents of the Mac's screen will be duplicated on the TV, non-mirrored means you have two separate and independent screens onto which you can open application windows.  You will probably have to fiddle with the screen resolutions, since most TVs don't have near the capabilities of the Mac's display.
If you have a Retina Mac, all the above applies save the adapter/dongle part. The Retina already has an HDMI port on the right side so you just plug in the cable.

  • 10.5.2: You cannot use the application "System preferences.app" with...

    Hello
after (successfully) updating from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2, the System Preferences.app cannot be started. Either the application does not start (a silent error) or there is a message "You cannot use the application "System preferences.app" with this version of MacOS X." The version is 10.5.2, according to "About this Mac", while the application version is 3.5. The same happens when I attempt to open "Time machine preferences" using the new menu/icon on the bar.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Marinho.

Thanks, I did that, but it didn't solve the problem.
By the way, the application version (of System preferences.app) remained the same (old one). Then I removed the application to Trash (meaning to restore it later if required) and applied the update again (and a third time), but then a new System preferences.app was not installed and the older one has disappeared from the trash! What a mess this update turns out to be...

I just changed to the HDMI > DVI converter which comes with the mac, it seems better but I still have white 'ghosting' around the black letters on the grey mac page headers.
I used the monitor calibration process in system preferences but it's no better.

  • Bug Report: Can't exit system preferences after creating new users

Setting up a brand new Mac Mini (Late 2014) with Yosemite. (Came installed with Yosemite). I got an i7 version with 16GB of ram and a 256GB solid state drive.
When I create a new user (either administrator or regular) and then attempt to exit from the "User and Groups" dialog box under "System Preferences" I get an error message that "System Preferences" is busy and that I have to wait. I tried waiting up to 5 minutes and still cannot close the dialog. The only way to kill the dialog box is to use Force Quit under the Apple menu. After killing the dialog with Force Quit, the newly created account DOES seem to work ok. It shouldn't take more than 5 minutes for Yosemite to simply create the default directories for a new account, so something is clearing getting wedged.
    Additional details
This has occurs every time I try and create a new user (and yes I have Administrator privileges).
No other applications (either from Apple or other software publishers) have been installed on this mac.
This occurs whether the new user is set to use an iCloud Password or a Separate Password.
There IS a live wi-fi connection to the Internet.
If I create a second administrator account and then login with that account and attempt to create a new user the same thing happens.
I'm rather shocked to encounter such an obvious bug in the first 5 minutes of using a BRAND NEW Mac.
Any suggestions for how to fix this?

I just tested it on my system and cannot replicate your problem. So, I would attribute it to a defective installation and suggest you do the following:
Install or Reinstall Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Printer does not display in System Preferences

I've got a simple setup, which is still in testing (no production clients yet).
Server: Mac OS 10.9.1 with Server 3.0.2 . Self signed trust certificate and enrollment certificates. 3rd party SSL cert for web. I've tried this with 10.8.5/2.2.1 as well with no success there either.
    Client: Mac OS 10.9.1
I configured a printer on my server through System Preferences with these settings:
    Printer Type : IP
    address: servername.mydomain.edu
    Queue: MyPrinter2000
    Name: MyPrinter2000
First of all, Profile Manager 2 was horrendous. I would not recommend using it at all. I could not get consistent profile deployments at all. Moving on...
I add a profile in Profile Manager that is associated to my client. I add some settings to try out including energy savings, login items, login window and some others. For the printer setting, I add the printer that is installed on my server. I allow users to manage the printer list, allow local printers, and save the setting.
The profile deploys right away, and on my test machine, I can see that the printer should be installed when reading the profile in System Preferences. In the Print & Scan menu, however, no printers are displayed whatsoever. I navigate to http://localhost:631 on this same client, and can see the printer there with the correct servername, queue, and driver. I am able to print a test page via that interface successfully.
I have tried installing the printer on the server as shared and not shared. I've removed all profiles and started from scratch with just one profile with just one printer added. Still nothing. I can't figure out why the printer seems to get deployed when I look at the web CUPS interface on the test machine, but System Preferences doesn't show anything.

Are you deploying the profile at user or machine level? I know you may know this but others may not but Apple began the deprecation of WorkGroup Manager with 10.7. FWIW those of us who've been using these technologies since 10.2 and earlier learnt to adapt and used a combination of many applications (some 3rd-party) as well as other techniques which over time worked consistently well. I suppose what I'm trying to say is don't pin all your hopes on PM because it's still not 'enterprise-ready' for OS X yet IMO. I think other veterans and professionals in my field may agree? Having said that I did make it work at some installations/deployments since its first release. Yet at other installations I saw exactly the same behaviour as you do. No logical reason as to why as the network contractor was the same for all those sites. For me this effectively ruled out the network topology and infrastructure as a potential source of the problem. Interestingly I noticed it occasionally worked if the printers were in the same subnet as the macs but even this was not conclusive.

  • ATI display driver fails to work with new kernel

    Hi,
    I've just upgraded from
    OEL kernel-2.6.18-194.11.3.0.1.el5.x86_64
    to most current
    OEL kernel-2.6.18-194.11.4.0.1.el5.x86_64
and got the problem with ATI display driver. Whenever I perform kernel upgrade, I have to recompile vendor-provided ATI display driver downloadable from AMD/ATI site, because system ATI driver, provided by OEL/RHEL as kernel module, doesn't work properly (too slow). I did that hundred times and never had a problem. This time the problem is that after upgrading to new kernel and recompiling the existing ATI display driver (Revision 10.8), it doesn't work anymore, even though it worked perfectly with previous kernel. I cannot even start X11 (glibc problem reported with stack traces!!!). The newest ATI display driver (Revision 10.9) "works" with new kernel, but display is awfully slow making any serious work impossible. It is even slower than system-provided ATI driver.
I am pretty sure the problem is in new kernel. As I have no backup of old kernel files and couldn't download the previous OEL kernel files from ULN, neither binary nor source (the files do not exist on ULN anymore, only the recent kernel files), I downloaded the previous kernel source from ftp.redhat.com, compiled the kernel and downgraded to it, recompiled ATI display driver, and everything works properly and fast as before upgrading. I can remember that ULN site used to have all kernel versions prior to actual one and cannot understand why Oracle dropped this practice. As I have an ULN account, I certainly want to have OEL patched kernel.
My question is: does anybody know how and where I can download the previous OEL kernel-2.6.18-194.11.3.0.1.el5.x86_64 binary rpm files or at least source rpm file?
Maybe Sergio or Tommy can help?
    Thanks in advance.
    NJ

I have experienced the same with Ubuntu some years ago - specific feature (hack?) that was implemented in the kernel was deprecated. This was used by the display driver for an onboard Intel graphics chipset. Beryl (which was subsequently merged with Compiz) turned into a horribly slow experience. As far as I recall, a subsequent kernel patch "fixed" things as a number of users were affected, of which many complained very loudly.
Anyway, I think the lesson here is that OEL is not really the correct distro to use for a desktop. A broken ATI driver for the OEL kernel? Does not really feature in the scheme of things for OEL support. Oracle Grid/RAC/Enterprise/Standard Edition do not care. Oracle's application servers (Apache, Weblogic, etc) do not care. Etc.
Sure, GUI desktop access to an OEL server is needed (like when running dbca or an installer) - but that can easily and effectively be done using vncserver for example and running twm.
You may be able to fix/work-around the problem with the current kernel update.. you may be able to roll back the update. But what about the next time when some other component does not work after a patch or an update? Surely it is a lot less stressful and frustrating to rather use a desktop distro, like Ubuntu, instead?

  • System Preferences Resetting with Reboot

Since I upgraded to Mavericks I have this really annoying problem that my system preferences keep resetting with every reboot I make. For example the wacom driver resets to project the tablet on both displays instead of just one and the audio adjustments are resetting as well. I tried the PRAM- and the SMC- Reset but nothing seemed to work for me. Any help is greatly appriciated

  • T420 won't boot with new Samsung 840 Pro SSD

    Hi all
I seem to have a failed brand new SSD. Before I RMA it, please help me spot my stupid mistake
I've just used Samsung data migration to copy my C drive to a Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSD as usual.
I went into device driver, and set the SSD to cache writes, so the SSD was working then.
I removed the 320GB SSD, installed the SSD and rebooted.
After the BIOS flash screen, the system halts with a funny symbol on the screen and a flashing cursor.
It responds to Ctrl Alt Del. but doesn't get as far as testing the DVD drive.
After replacing the SSD with the HDD and rebooting, all is fine again ...
The BIOS shows AHCI mode, and the SSD and contents (in a USB3 drive caddy) are visible and readable.
I can't use Samsung SSD magician because it won't see the SSD over USB (clever!), so can't work out how to upgrade firmware.
This is an i5, 8GB, 320GB machine with 1600x900 screen, with XP Pro 64-bit.
What gives?? Others here have posted with working 840 Pros in a T420, so I think it's compatible.
Could this be a SATA2/SATA3 thing or AHCI? I can't see any SATA2/3 control in the BIOS - does it just auto-negotiate?
Most grateful for any suggestions and thanks in advance

    Hi woothoot,
I'm not familiar with the Samsung data migration tool.  Is it actually cloning the drive, or just copying files and settings?
With ThinkPads, it is usually recommended to have the target drive installed in the laptop and the source on the external connection.  Doing it the other way sometimes results in a non-booting drive.
Can you rearrange things so that you do the clone op with the SSD installed in the T420?

  • BT Vision remote unresponsive with new Samsung TV ...

Help! I've searched the forums and it seems that this has happened before. The new TV is attached to the BT box via a HDMI cable. When it is plugged into the TV and the TV is on, it is unresponsive to the remote.  If the TV is off, the box is responsive to the remote.  If the TV is on but the HDMI is unplugged, it works.  I've spoken to BT support and they say it must be a problem with the TV. The engineers from Samsung have been out and say there's nothing wrong with the TV but agree the BT Vision box no longer works. The retailer is making it VERY difficult to return the TV and says I will be charged if they can't find the same fault.
I have looked on here and seen various things like pressing the 'Mode' button.  This does nothing.  I'm at a loss what to do.  The TV is a massive white elephant at the moment, or is it yet another BT problem?  Help, PLEASE!!!
    Thanks
    Sally

Don't have any experience of this with a bt box but when i boight my panasonic tv 6 months ago it wouldn't work with my xbox as the tv hdmi auto detect system was interfering with the xbox's hdmi stuff had to turn the hdmi detection stuff off on my tv then the xbox worked great, worth a shot???

  • How can I get the Display Profile list to update with new profile names?

    Hello
I recently created a couple of color profiles with a calibration device, and I decided to manually rename the color profiles after creating them. The problem is, when I open Displays in the control panel, the new names for the profiles don't show up, only the old names. To get the Display Profile to update, I have to pull the profile out of Library > Color Syncs and restart (which clears the profile from the list), then put the renamed profile back in, restart (which then adds the renamed profile to the list)
Is there an easier way to to this, to get the Display Profile list to update? Is there a preference or cache somewhere?
    thanks

Oh, cool! I never handle any Mayan stuff in my job, but many of my academic cohort have done so. Mostly Tzotzil.
Anyhow: your sample font was Times New Roman. If you can't see the combining glyphs, then you're using an out-of-date version of the font, or something else is wrong. . Did you maybe start your work on a contemporary version of Word in WIndows, and now you've shifted to using a Mac with an older version of Office? THere are plenty of nulls in TNR (which are usually codepoints not in Unicode, usually a sign of some kind of hacky workaround on the part ofthe font designer). There should be a real combining macron below right about here, in between the crazy upper Latin and the Greek caps :
So I'd want to know: what font are you using for this? If not TNR, then I'd suggest Gentium. I might even suggest dropping TNR for Gentium. Judging by your screen name, you may well already be aware of SIL. If not - oh hey, they make fonts for people who are in your shoes! Go check 'em out. The fonts are free, and pretty reliable. And Gentium may already have a precomposed with-line-below glyph for your typesetting needs.
The Kerning dropdown lets you adjust the spacing between letters in a letter-by-letter way. Selecting all of your text and picking "Metrics" is the way to go here - unless you are a designer who thinks that the capital D is way too far away from the lowercase i, and want to tweak the kerning manually. "Optical" is for large font sizes where body-text-style kerning is too spacious. Avoid using it at small font sizes.

  • Accounts System Preference Blank

Problem surfaced while trying to install Retrospect Client on G4 Graphite Dual 450 running OS X (10.3.9). Retrospect itself, running on Dual 2.6 G5 (OS X - 10-4-8) can see the new client and tries to add it via TCP/IP, but requires password.
These are work machines and the users can never remember their passwords, so there are none, but Retrospect doesn't enable connection without a password. So, I go to the System Preferences - Accounts, and the window opens completely blank - no accounts, nothing.
The G4 is started in its Admin account.
I tried restarting from a system DVD and repairing permissions, but this does not seem to solve the problem. Is there a preference file I can throw away, or anything else that can be done to re-enable the Accounts Panel?

    macrobat,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Quit System Preferences, find the com.apple.preferences.accounts.plist file which is located in the Macintosh HD/Users/username/Library/Preferences Folder, drag it to the Desktop, log out/in or restart and check for functionality of the Accounts preference.
If that is not successful, Quit System Preferences (if it's running) and trash the following file: Macintosh HD/Users/username/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
Then launch System Preferences again and check for functionality.
    ;~)

  • Install Printers now displaying in System Preferences

We are a school district using Casper to manage our computers. We are switching the way we manage printers (our Canon Copiers) from a managed printer to a scripted printer using CUPS scripting to install the printer.
For the most part, it is working and working well. We can set the defaults for the user (Single Sided, Black & White, Secured Printing) and allow the user to change those settings by using Presets.
BUT, every once in awhile, we get a computer (we have 500 13" MacBook Airs, all purchased at the same time), where after installing the printer using Casper Self Service, the System Preferences seem to be 'wiped out'. Yet if we then attempt to print, the printers are all there in the Print Dialog box. Strange. A restart of the computer didn't help, but logging in as "Admin" did show the printers in System Preferences. Logging out and back in as the user, nothing in System Preferences / Fax & Print, yet you could still print.
We eventually did a PRAM reset, and then the printers did return to the System Preferences. Just wondering why this is happening though. If it was only once, I would forget about it, but it has happened on about 5 MBAs now. Yet doing the same thing on 20 other MBAs at this one building was successful with no problems.
    I hate inconsistency.
All machines are running either OS X 10.9.3 or 10.9.5 (depending upon when we update them).
    Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi Buckster. Well I was not managing any of the preferences before but have done now. Will check tomorrow after the computers have been off to see if the printers stay where they belong.
