DNS name resolution ignores search domains ??

I have a DNS search domain specified in network prefs for ethernet (and a domain picked up from DHCP).  But these appears to be ignored both in apps  and on the command line.  I find I have to type the fqdn which is a pain.
Looking at /etc/resolv.conf I see  'domain' but no search entries.  UNIX docs suggest that domain should allow 'short names' maunally adding explicit search records to /etc/resolve.conf seems to work despite the warning that nothing uses resolve.conf any more. (as on most modern UNIX systems).
Anyone know what is going on?  It is a worry that search domains specified in preferences => networks appear to be ignored.  It is also a worry that adding config to a supposedly unused file fixes the problem (well at least until it gets overwritten with the next dhcp refresh).
Russell.

Hi,
How about the status of the problem now?
DNS request timed out is mainly caused by losing of Network Connectivity, detailed information you may reference the link below(session
7. Loss of Network Connectivity):
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb962024.aspx
If the problem still exits, try command line nslookup /set d2
to turn exhaustive Debugging Mode on(all fields of every packet are printed). And post the result here.

Eve Wang

  • Nslookup appears to be ignoring search domains

My organization has a number of shorthand URLs like 'wiki' and 'teamportal' that are on one of many domains we've acquired over the years; nobody knows what's on which domain except the DNS servers. For some reason, I can't resolve these domains. I can find them fine if I try the FQDN, however.
    $ nslookup foo 172.17.1.8
    Server: 172.17.1.8
    Address: 172.17.1.8#53
** server can't find foo: SERVFAIL
    $ nslookup foo.example.com 172.17.1.8
    Server: 172.17.1.8
    Address: 172.17.1.8#53
    foo.example.com canonical name = intranet7.example.com.
    Name: intranet7.example.com
    Address: 10.8.250.134
    My resolv.conf looks like this:
    domain dhcp.example.com
    nameserver 172.17.1.8
    search examplesys.com example.com
Shouldn't that search directive tell nslookup to try those domains? What's going wrong?

I've based my stuff on the samples.  Unfortunately when I try and run them I get other errors.  For instance when I get to the line
    Dim rh As ResponseHolder = bipService.Get("path://InfoObjects/Root Folder/WWE Reports/" + REPORT_STRING + "@SI_SCHEDULEINFO, SI_PROCESSINFO", oGetOptions)
    and the path string is:
    "path://InfoObjects/Root Folder/WWE Reports/rtodbc3@SI_SCHEDULEINFO, SI_PROCESSINFO"
    I get

  • Local DNS search domain issue

    Hi everyone,
I have recently upgraded my Macbook from Snow Leopard to Lion, and since then I have some trouble with my local network.
I work in a local network, so I have set up a local DNS and search domain to let me use local domain like google.com.in
Everything worked fine in Snow Leopard but with Lion I cannot reach anymore all the *.in domains, I only can reach simple domain like "myserver"
For the moment I've found a workaround by adding all my domains in the /etc/hosts file but it's a pity because I work with tons of domains.
Here it is my scutil --dns cmd :

  • How to setup multi DNS server resolution

I have a peculiar situation which I think may be applicable to others. I take my Macbook Pro to work. At work I have a Ethernet based LAN connection and a wireless connection.
The ethernet connection gets me access to company servers, but uses some crude proxies and limits what I can access on the net.
The wireless was setup by a tech to get around this and has a direct connection to the net, but no access to the company servers.
The best situation I have currently is to put the wireless connection first in the network setting sand use that unless I need a company server. Then I have to turn wireless off before accessing the server and turn it back on to access anything I cannot get through the company LAN.
I've been looking into configuring the Mac to enable me to have both on all the time. I've found that if I execute
    route add 161.117.0.0/16 -inteface en0
Then any company server name I have already resolved will correctly route out through the eithernet rather than the wireless which solves the first part of the puzzle.
I've also tried to setup multiple DNS resolution by adding a /etc/resolvers/company.com.au file with the contents:
    nameserver 161.117.219.153
    nameserver 161.117.248.113
    search company.com.au
    search_order 1
I've then checked this with scutil --dns which shows
    DNS configuration
    resolver #1
      search domain[0] : Wireless
      nameserver[0] : 10.0.0.138
    resolver #9
      domain   : company.com.au
      search domain[0] : company.com.au
      nameserver[0] : 161.117.219.153
      nameserver[1] : 161.117.248.113
      order    : 1
    DNS configuration (for scoped queries)
    resolver #1
      search domain[0] : Wireless
      nameserver[0] : 10.0.0.138
      if_index : 5 (en1)
      flags    : Scoped
    resolver #2
      search domain[0] : company.com.au
      nameserver[0] : 161.117.219.153
      nameserver[1] : 161.117.248.113
      if_index : 4 (en0)
      flags    : Scoped
But I still cannot get DNS resolution working for the company servers. Dig is no help because it's doco says that it only uses the /etc/resolv.conf file. Unfortunately documentation on setting up multi DNS resolution is practically nil and I've not been able to find any examples on the net. Just a few postings saying to use /etc/resolvers and very little doco in man pages.
Has anyone else managed to get this working?

  • DNS/LDAP Issue for Trusted Domain

    Hi
I'm trying to configure  Configuration Manager 2012 R2 Forest Discovery to a trusted domain.
Objects from the trusted domain (users/computers) show up in the Collections, but when I check under Administration\Active Directory Forests I can see Discovery Status "Failed to connect using default account" and Publishing status "Cannot
    Contact LDAP Server".
I've added the SCCM server to local admin at the trusted domain via GPO and have also created the system Management container.
When I check the log ADForestDisc.log I get this error message:
"Failed to connect to forest X. This can be because of disjoint DNS namespaces, network connectivity or server availibility issue. Error Information The specified forest does not exist or cannot be contacted."
I have setup Conditional Forwarders in DNS in both domains.
I have also read other forums about this issue and should have the answer:
"This error occurs for all of the domains that you mentioned and is typical when SRV records for DCs in those remote domains cannot be found. Forest discovery relies on DNS name resolution of SRV records to locate a suitable DC to communicate with."
"The site server performing the forest discovery must be able to resolve the SRV records for the DCs or root domain of the other forest."
We are using Windows AD integrated DNS in both domains.
I'm not so familiar with DNS configuration so I appreciate if someone could tell more specific how to fix this.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi
Thank you for your answer. This issue is solved. I've missed to open some ports in the router/firewall between the LANs.
The status under Active Directory Forests is Succeded now, but when I check under boundaries, I can only see the "Default-First-Site-Name" site for the first domain (same LAN as CM Server) and I can only see the IP address range for that LAN.
I don't Think  this is a big issue, but shouldn't the site name and address range for the other LAN (where the trusted domain is) be automatically found to during forest Discovery when I've checked the options to create site and ip boundaries automatically?

  • DBLHelper issue - Name resolution

I have an issue with the DNS Name resolution. Unfortunately I have the red frown:( next to my subscriber.
However, I can ping the subscriber from the publisher with the hostname, and vice versa. I confirmed that all host entries are present as well. Anyone have an idea what else to check for?

Ok, normally check the lmhosts and host files:
Then do a nbtstat -R and ipconfig /flushdns
If you have already tried Reinitialize option in DBLhelper u may try it manually.

  • How to use DNS server for name resolution for items which don't exist in active directory domain controller DNS

    Dear Experts,
In our office we have a domain controller call it 'Office.com', all computers and corporate servers e.g. exchange, antivirus etc. are member of this 'office.com', it is also having a DNS. All users in office have there preferred DNS set to the corporate
    DNS
We are working for ministry and offering services to them from our data center so have many servers which are for ministry but they are in our data center. For all these servers we created another DNS server which contains all entries for these servers in
forward and reverse lookup zones. In this DNS we also created a forward lookup zone for our corporate servers and zone name is 'office.com'
What we are trying to have is name resolution of all servers which are listed in other DNS build in our office on Win 2008 R2 for ministry servers
If the user change his preferred DNS to ministry DNS he can resolve the ministry server but then we can not control any thing through group policy since they are using other DNS and not the corporate DNS.
How this can be done ? like any group policy applied to corporate domain controller must take effect on users and in addition to this user must also be able to resolve server names in ministry project DNS
    Please assist ASAP.
    regards,

    Hello,
ok so the GPO setting doesn't apply in any case.
Clients machines use the first DNS server in the list of configured ones on the NIC. If that one is available search for additional DNS servers will stop.
What i can not really understand is your description about the second DNS server. This should normally either another DC with AD integrated DNS, so everything is replicatedwithin AD replication or you use a secondary DNS on domain member server that pulls
    the informations from the Master.
It sounds for me that you have configured a machine with DNS server role and created manually the zone with the same name as the domainand manually create there the required A records?

  • Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 domain join displays error "Changing the Primary Domain DNS name of this computer to "" failed...."

    Hi,
Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 domain join displays error "Changing the Primary Domain DNS name of this computer to "" failed...."
    DC:windows Server 2008 R2
    Domain functional level:Windows Server 2003
When Winxp join domain, have no this error message.
    I checked http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2018583?wa=wsignin1.0 does't work.
There have 3 suggestion in this article:
1.The "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" checkbox has been disabled in the IPv4 properties of the computer being joined.
    Doesnt's work.
2.Connectivity over UDP port 137 is blocked between client and the helper DC servicing the join operation in the target domain.
On my DC, I run netstat -an, reslut as below:
     UDP    192.168.20.3:137       *:*
3.The TCP/IPv4 protocol has been disabled so that the client being joined or the DC in the destination domain targeted by the LDAP BIND is running TCP/IPv6 only.
    We are not using IPV6.
This server recently updated from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008 R2. Before upgrade, when Win7 and Win2008 join this domain, also have the same error message.
Please help to check this issue.
    Thank you very much.
    BR
    Guo YingHui

    Hi Guo Ying,
I have faced this critical error which makes over-writes the host names in the domain when you join.
For example: Already you had a host name called as PC.domain.com in the domain.com Domain.
When you try to add the another host name called as PC in the domain.com Domain, it doesn't give you the duplicate name error on the network it does over-write the existing host name called as PC.domain.com & it will add the new host name into the domain.
Host name which got over-written will get removed from the domain. I faced this issue in my project. My DPM host name got removed from the Domain & new host name got joined into the domain which halted my backups for one day.
    Final Resolution is as follows:
You need to start the dns console on the DC & drop down the domain name.
Select the _msdcs when you click on _msdcs it will show the Name Server's list on the right hand side.
You need to add the Domain Naming Master under the _msdcs or add all the domain controllers which you had.
After you add the Name server's try joining the PC OR Laptop to the domain which is successfully joins it.

  • Domain name/"primary DNS" name/mail host name/mail server name/mx name

    Hi,
I have registered my domain name (N.com) with an external dns server and created an MX record (mail.N.com) for it as well. My server sits behind a router and internet traffic is port(80)-forwarded to my server's fixed internal ip address (I can access my webpages from the internet just fine). When I initially setup the server I was asked to give it a "primary DNS name." I naturally assumed that N.com was supposed to be entered here, but that just caused all kinds of problems (though I still do not understand why). So I reinstalled and currently have server.N.com as the primary DNS name of the server (although it shows up in Server Admin and Workgroup Manager as server.local--why is that?)
I have had no luck getting any email from the internet with the default settings in mail services (domain name of N.com and host name of server.N.com). Having no luck with the defaults, I assumed that maybe I needed to change the host name to "mail.N.com" so that it matched the MX record. I also changed the user preferences in Workgroup Manager to receive mail from mail.N.com--but still no luck. Could someone tell me what I am doing wrong and how come none of the Mail Service literature mentions anything about what a mail "host name" is supposed to be? Is it supposed to be the same as the "Mail Server" name that Workgroup Manager asks each user for? and is it the same as the MX record name?
I am just needing some help to connect all these variously named, but undefined, dots.
Also, how come I can access webmail from the internet using www.N.com/webmail but can't do it from any computers within my physical network (I have to use IPaddress/webmail or server.local/webmail)?
Also, should my user email addresses be [email protected] or [email protected] (which is the current default)?
Thanks in advance and good luck!
    John

I had been told by a friend that ... regular email coming in from the internet would go through port 80
    Unfortunately you were misinformed.
My MX record needs the extra subname (such as "mail") in front of the domain name, right?
Not at all. A MX record for 'N.com' is entirely valid (expected, in fact).
An MX record tells remote mail servers where to send mail for any domain/subdomain. If you think about it, let's say you worked for Apple and you wanted people to be able to send email to [email protected], well then you need an MX record for 'apple.com'.
You can see if you dig MX apple.com that they actually have 9 MX records, but the point still stands.
Now, you might also have MX records for subdomains so that you can have [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], etc. Each of these subdomains would need a separate MX record.
So, in general, for any set of email addresses @[anything.]domain.com you have a MX record telling remote mail servers where to send that mail.
Of course the MX record name is mail.N.com, but I think you are implying that the in the Mail settings of Server Admin where it asks for domain name all I need to put there is the N.com, right?
What I mean is that you need to set the domain name to whatever domain name you expect to receive mail at.
If you want users to have email addresses in the form of [email protected], then you enter 'N.com'.
If you want users to have email addresses in the form of [email protected] then you enter 'mail.N.com'.
If you want both forms, enter one in the main domain and add the other(s) in the Advanced -> Hosting -> Local Host Aliases section.
Is there anything in the Mail settings that needs to have the full MX record name (mail.N.com)?
Yes. Either the 'domain name' or the 'Local Host Aliases' needs to contain the same thing as your MX record. That's because the MX record tells remote servers to send mail to this machine, but the machine won't accept the mail unless it is configured to do so.
What is the "host name" supposed to be?
This should be the name that remote servers see when this machine tries to send outgoing mail.
Ideally this should match the reverse DNS of your IP address, that way when it connects to a remote server it says "Hi, I'm $hostname" and the remote server can lookup the machine's IP address and see the same result. This will reduce the problem of remote servers thinking you're sending them spam.
If you only have a single IP address then this probably needs to be something like 'N.com'. If you don't have control over your reverse DNS then you're going to run into a problem.
Also in the user accounts (in Workgroup Manager) what should the "mail server name" be? Is it the host name or the domain name?
    Off hand, I don't know.
Also, why are all the default user email addresses [email protected] (the name I gave the server at setup)? Why doesn't the user accounts create [email protected] as the default address?
Presumably because the mail server says it is 'server.N.com' and therefore any accounts on that machine would be [email protected]. Changing the domain name (as above) should fix that.

  • An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a domain controller in the domain being joined has failed.

"An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a domain controller in the domain being joined has failed."
This is the error message I get whenever I try to connect to my servers domain which I just set up earlier today. I have read through a bunch of other threads on the same error message
but each of them has had different solutions and none of them have helped me.
The one thing that I suspect is related to my problem is that I can't ping my domain on the W7 computer I'm trying to connect. I can ping the server, but not the domain. the domain
i'm using is set up like "domain.local" .
Other things that might be relevant.
I'v already set up user accounts and a computer under the Server 2012 active domain administrator settings.
I'v port forwarded ports 80 and 443 on the server.
The server has a static IPv4 IP adress. I haven't done anything with IPv6
The W7 computer has a dynamic IP adress, but I don't think it changes. I believe my router is set up to keep it constant, not 100% sure though.
Thanks for any help with this, I'm pretty much out of ideas on this.

    Hi ZachPrinz,
Firstly, would you please let us know the outputs of ipconfig /all both of the clients and the DC.
Also, if you run nslookup FQDN of your DC from your clients, what will you receive?
Meanwhile, regarding the issue, we can refer to

Do you use bit-torrent or limewire or that stuff? If so, no telling who was in your computer or what they did. If you run the computer as an administrator, it only makes things worse.
With most malware, you have to invite it into your computer.
Your best bet is to completely reinstall without migrating anything and hope that nothing much was copied from your computer.

  • Configure DNS & Search Domains in TCP/IP Settings via Terminal?

    HI Folks,
I've been having a long standing battle trying to find out what is wrong with my machine, it's been running like a dog for a while and having recently added 2 new Macs to our network i recall that there was a setting missing - namely within the TCP/IP settings for the Built In Ethernet, the DNS Servers and Search Domains are not configured on my machine, but are on the new ones i've added (mine was my new foray into Macs so i maybe set it up wrong!)
However the main problem occurs when i try to edit the settings for the above from within System Preferences -> Network, i get a spinning beach ball of doom and have to Force Quit. Yet oddly i can access the setting fine when i am at home and not connected to the AD of the Windows Server Environment... which makes me think the events could be linked.... i thought it may have been Parallels and it's NAT settings, but given that all works perfectly at home i'm not so sure. Hence, as a process of elimination i'd like to try and get the correct settings for Search Domain etc to see if it helps, before i flatten the machine and reinstall Tiger completely!
The main issues i've been having with the machine can be found here:

    Hi Phil (and others!)
I opted for the easy choice, which did work... and have added the Search Domain info etc whilst at home... and touch wood today things seem to be working better, i can easily access network preferences etc and have had no hanging apps as yet...
I did try and use different locations for work and home, but sadly i ended up with a spinning beach ball of doom when i tried to change the location at work, so it was a slightly pointless exercise!!!
The lookupd -configuration printout is as follows (no idea if it's useful in any way!)
    ConfigSource: default

  • LMs 3.2 name resolution preference

we currently using host file for name resolution for LMS server and we will going to DNS, and I am curious if DNS fast enough to do for LMS to amange 4k devices, specially on device discovery, or CM. also on DNS search prifx our sub domain is the 3rd prefered not the first one. with all these i have some doubt. please if you have experiance moving from host to DNS please share your experiance or suggestion. thanks

    Hi,
    "Our   Device Discovery  3500 Devices -> 4hrs  ------------  Cisco white paper data -> 15 minute for 5K
Our  Device Data Collection 3500 Devices ->11 hrs ------------Cisco white paper data -> 4 hrs   for 5k
Oour  User Tracking Discovering 3550 devices and 30k Devices-> 23hrs  ------------Cisco white paper data -> 1.26 hrs for 100k "
Well, this all depends how we have configured community strings on the CiscoWorks and how is the network response when query will send to the devices.
The performance depicted in the White papers are more like examples and it may vary from network to network. But another fact is how we have configured the CiscoWorks to collect the data from devices like for example while doing Device Discovery if you have 300 devices in DCR already and select the option "Use DCR list for Device Discovery" then obviously it will start the 300 discovery thread from these devices and it will take lot more time to discover the devices in network. Similarly if you have configured, multiple community string for different types of devices and in the discovery setting you provide the target *.*.*.* for 1st community and *.*.*.* for two more  community string, then it will again take considerable time to discover the devices since each community string will be reffered for all the devices again and again.
Bottom line is , the time varies from network to network and also how you can fine tune your configureation setting in CiscoWorks.
Here is the good doc link to get the better understanding of "Device Discovery"

    Hope it helps too.
