DNSBL logging in Sun MTA
Hey,
I've configured a PORT_ACCESS rule in the mappings file as follows:
TCP|*|25|*|* $C$[opt/sunapps/msg/lib/dns_verify.so,dns_verify_domain_port,$1,sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org,Your$ host$ ($1)$ found$ on$ block$ list]$E
This appears to be working correctly (snooping DNS traffic I can verify it is doing appropriate lookups, however there is nothing in the logs indicating that this IP attempted to connect and was blocked. We'd really like to see a log entry for this, and I'm fairly sure when I've configured it on another server previously it was logging with an " X " code.
I have the following log options configured in option.dat
LOG_FORMAT=2
LOG_CONNECTION=7
LOG_FILTER=1
MM_DEBUG=5
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make it log a drop due to RBL ?
Regards,
Michael Ward.
I had only been using SA (which i think does some
dsbl etc. checking) - but seeing the above thread,
and the mappings file on balius.com - especially the
parts which discriminate mail to reject, I began to
use these parts (ORIG_MAIL_ACCESS-REJECT/DELAY, and
BLACKLIST) in my mappings. I do see the lookups to
spamcop, spamhaus, etc. working and dropping mail -
and spamd seems to be working less - I am using a
caching local dns - I cannot tell if the rate of Spam
getting through has increased or decreased yet
(seems about the same - pretty low for me) - I am
not terribly concerned about using blacklists yet
(e.g. false positives). Any insight into using them
in conjunction with SA? Does it decrease overall
Spam?Blacklists are simply a list of addresses (or domains) you refuse to accept anything from. Depending on how you have SA setup, it can reduce spam, some, reduce the number of messages SA processes, or block some valid mail.
>
What do the other pieces do, e.g. virus, throttle,
etc.
RATE_LIMITLimit how many messages from one ip address can be accepted in a certain time.
REJECT_IPblacklist that ip address.
ALWAYS_ACCEPTWhitelist that domain (accept anything from them)
ALWAYS_ACCEPT_IPWhitelist that ip address.
ALWAYS_ACCEPT_SNDRWhitelist that user
REJECT_FROM_USER_DOMAINblacklist that domain
REJECT_VIRUS
REJECT_FROM_USER
REJECT_FROM_DOMAIN
REJECT_TO_USER
REJECT_TO_USER_DOMAINvarious blacklist options.
DELAY_FROM_USER_DOMAIN
DELAY_FROM_USER
DELAY_TO_USER
DELAY_TO_USER_DOMAIN
DELAY_IPThese slow down the accptance from these sources. This is often a very good method for dealing with spam generators, as they don't like to wait, and rarely retry.

Sometimes I see this "last J record for this session"
in mail.log_current - apparently during mail address
harvesting ... is that correct, or referring to
something else?It could be harvesting

Unable to recieve any logs from Sun machine....
Hi,
I'm using Sun Solaris v10 and i have problem in receiving logs from sun machine. The syslog server is my windows which i want my sun machine to sends logs to (windows machine is ALIVE on default port 514).
I have edited the syslog.conf file as:-

I don't know what kind of terminal you are on - all I have is 't100'.

# log messages to be logged locally.
ifdef(`LOGHOST', ,
user.err /dev/sysmsg

user.alert `root, operator'
user.emerg *
)I even have made en entry at /etc/hosts which is given as:-
*192.168.50.253 asad loghost*
All this but my syslog server remains empty of any logs yet.
Is there a way where i could explicitly make Sun machine to generate logs by invoking some methods......as for now its taking for ever to generate logs by the machine.
Please rectify this problem as I have reached a dead-end making sense of the logging mechanism proposed by the sun machine.Try replacing any space characters in the lines you added to syslog.conf with tabs.

Can't log into Sun DS 5.2 Console after installing Identity Synchronization
Installing the Identity Synchronization module over the directory server prevents me from logging into the server using the console.
I installed Sun Java System Directory Server 5.2 on a Windows 2000 server. After that, I installed the following in the order below:
1. Patch 5077789 Patch 2
2. Patch 117667-03
3. Sun Java System Message Queue 3.5 SP1.
Upto this point, I was able to log into the DS server without any problems. I was also able to access and use the MQ.
After this, I installed the Sun Java System Identity Synchronization module.
Now I am unable to log into the DS console. The error I get is "Cannot logon because of an incorrect User ID, Incorrect password or Directory problem.
java.net.SocketException: Connection reset"
Any ideas what the problem might be? I've tried uninstalling, cleaning up and reinstalling everything, but to no avail.
Thanks in advanceLook at the logs/error under admin-serv directory for more clue
Make sure hostname.ldapdomainname (eg: ldap1.example.com) for LDAP server is set in Windows hosts file as 1st field.
cd to slapd-hostname and run
.\saveconfig
Notepad the ldif file generated, search for userPassword for cn=admin-serv-hostname, AND CHECK IF there is passwordExpirationTime set, if there it could mean userPassword of admin-serv-hostname expired, if so you may follow a recent thread to set it to never expire.

Folks,
I have been struggling with what appears to be an RBL lookup problem. I understand that any call out to a resource on the internet is subject to delays and in this case having the lookup DB closer to home is the real solution. However, I am also told that there are ways to tune the method that one uses to call an RBL so as to "minimize" these delays. I am hoping to do so at least to buy me some time so I can run the RBL locally as a more efficient alternative.
So here is the story:
Users submitting mail either via imap clients via port 587 or webmail experience long delays before the mail is sent and the connection closes.
I was originally using a DNS_VERIFY_DOMAIN=zen.spamhaus.org. entry in my dispatcher.cnf file for lookups
and after opening a case with SUN I was told that this method (dispatcher.cnf) is prone to having the dispatcher load up with opened connections and that this apparently was my problem.
I was instructed to use the port access mapping entry method (as below)as a more tuneable and efficient method. I made the changes and am now using the following entry in my mappings table.
PORT_ACCESS
! Allow internal connections in unconditionally
*|*|*|*|* $C$|INTERNAL_IP;$3|$Y$E
! Check other connections against RBL list
TCP|*|25|*|* \
$C$[/opt/SUNWmsgsr/lib/dns_verify.so,\
dns_verify_domain_port,$1,zen.spamhaus.org.]EXTERNAL$E
I am however, still seeing the delays and in order to better understand what might be the problem have the following questions:
Q: Why would a delay be incurred with the above method for a UA submitting mail via port 587 ?
Q: I am also seeing delays with webmail sends, shouldn't they be considered internal as the MTA and the webmail instance are on the same box?
My understanding is that using this method should ONLY do lookups on port 25 connections for Non internal addresses and hence delays should not be incurred by port 587 submits.
Am I missing something here?

I am hoping to do so at least to buy me some time so I can run the RBL locally as a more efficient alternative. Slow RBL lookups usually manifest themselves in the responsiveness of the dispatcher process which is responsible for accepting the connections on port 25/587 etc. doing the initial PORT_ACCESS check and then handing off the connection to the multi-threaded smtp_server process.
Due to the dispatcher process being single-threaded (the accept/PORT_ACCESS check bit at least), a slow RBL lookup will affect other unrelated email connections. For example if your RBL check took 1 second, then you can only process 1 email/second.
Please note however there is one thread per port, so if port 25 is going slow port 587 shouldn't be affected. The common symptom is that when you run "telnet <mailhost> 25" and the initial SMTP banner takes a few seconds to return -- check your RBL lookups.
So here is the story:
Users submitting mail either via imap clients via port 587 or webmail experience long delays before the mail is sent and the connection closes. As mentioned above this may or may not be RBL related. When you telnet to port 587, how long does it take for the SMTP banner to return? What about port 25? Do you have any anti-virus/anti-spam plugins in use, are your disks busy.... and the list goes on.
If you can reproduce the problem, get some kind of packet trace and see at what point the delay occurs. For example if it is during the SMTP auth, this can indicate a directory server delay, RCPT TO: could be some other check/expansion etc. etc.
This won't help - that's for sure. *.spamhaus.org is an external list which means you are at the mercy of the responsiveness of the DNS infrastructure. As I explained before the rate at which you can receive email will be dictated by the DNS response. This is why we also encourage the installation of a local-DNS-caching service.
I was instructed to use the port access mapping entry method (as below)as a more tuneable and efficient method. I made the changes and am now using the following entry in my mappings table. Not sure how much more efficient it is, but it is more selective. Please note that you still have the underlying issue of single-threaded lookups - so this doesn't resolve this issue.
I am however, still seeing the delays and in order to better understand what might be the problem have the following questions:
Q: Why would a delay be incurred with the above method for a UA submitting mail via port 587 ?It wouldn't incur a delay - so I suggest you look elsewhere as I discussed earlier. You need to isolate exactly at what point the delay is occurring.
Q: I am also seeing delays with webmail sends, shouldn't they be considered internal as the MTA and the webmail instance are on the same box? This would depend on your configuration. Is 127.0.0.1 included in your INTERNAL_IP mapping table?
My understanding is that using this method should ONLY do lookups on port 25 connections for Non internal addresses and hence delays should not be incurred by port 587 submits.Correct.
Am I missing something here?Yes.
I should point out that in MS6.3 the multi-threaded SMTP server process also checks the PORT_ACCESS mapping table. There is unfortunately a bug which prevents this check from being enforced (so connections aren't rejected based on the result - bug #6590888). I recommend you log a Sun support case to get a copy of the next patch to include the fix for this bug - this will allow you to use the special $:S flag and have the RBL lookup performed at the multi-threaded stage, therefore slow lookups won't compound delays.

Can't execute web app from NetBeans 3.6 with Sun Java App Server 8
Hi there,
I'm tyring to execute a java web application called myfirstjsp.
In directory ...\myfirstsjp I've got:
- index.jsp
- WEB-INF dir
- META-INF dir.
I can run myfirstjsp from NetBeans if I choose the Netbeans default server, Tomcat 5.0.19 (this web server is configured to port 8084).
However, when I try to execute myfirstjsp from NetBeans with Sun Java System Application Server 8(configured to port 8080), it gives me an annoying message:
The Sun Java System Application Server 8 could not start.
More information about the cause is in the Server log file.
Possible reasons include:
- Port conflicts. (use netstat -a to detect possible port numbers already used by the operating system.)
- Incorrect server configuration (domain.xml to be corrected manually)
- Corrupted Deployed Applications preventing the server to start.(This can be seen in the server.log file. In this case, domain.xml needs to be modified).
I checked port conflicts but none found.
The other two options don't give me a place to start (I don't know what to do with domain.xml)
I'm working with:
- Windows XP Pro
- J2SE 1.4.2_04 (installed in C:\Program Files\j2sdk1.4.2_04)
- Sun Java Application Server 8 (installed in C:\Program Files\Sun\AppServer)
- Netbeans 3.6 + Sun Java System Application Server Plugin (installed in C:\Program Files\NetBeans3.6).
My PC has the following environment variables:
PATH(in user MGoncalv)=C:\Program Files\Sun\AppServer\bin;,?ut
PATH(system variable)=C:\Program Files\j2sdk1.4.2_04\bin;D:\ProgramFiles\OraReportNT\bin;C:\OraHome92\bin;C:\Program Files\Oracle\jre\1.3.1\bin;C:\Program Files\Oracle\jre\1.1.8\bin;%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\Personal Communications\;C:\Program Files\IBM\Trace Facility\;%SystemRoot%\system32\nls;%SystemRoot%\system32\nls\ENGLISH
CLASSPATH(system variable)=.;C:\OraHome92\jdbc\lib\ojdbc14.jar
By looking at the Sun App Server log file, I discovered that the log outputs of
- Start Default Server (a link in the folder created by the installation of Sun App Server)
- and trying to execute myfirstjsp from NetBeans through Sun App Server
are very similar.
Below is a piece of server.log when I tried to execute myfirstjsp from NetBeans through Sun App Server. Please, pay attention to the EJBC error:

Is this EJB compilation error normal ? if not what does it mean ? Sun Java App Server installation isn't OK ?
I tried to look into the Sun App Server Troubleshooting, searched forums... but couldn't squeeze any valuable info from any of them.
If you have any sugestion regarding this problem, or you know some web site that addresses it please tell me !
Many thanks,
MiguelI seem to have the same problem, I cant run sun application server 8.1. The server is in c:\sun\appserver\, I am using netbeans 4.1. I recieve the same comment above:
The Sun Java System Application Server 8 could not start.
More information about the cause is in the Server log file.
Possible reasons include:
- Port conflicts. (use netstat -a to detect possible port numbers already used by the operating system.)
- Incorrect server configuration (domain.xml to be corrected manually)
- Corrupted Deployed Applications preventing the server to start.(This can be seen in the server.log file. In this case, domain.xml needs to be modified).
I cant see any port conflict, the server is set to port 4848. I dont know about any configurations.

Sun Java Communications Sync Problem
hello,
I have windows VISTA and i installed "Sun Java Communications Sync" on it.
When i click in Outlook the "synchronize" tab then "Configure menu" to configure my calendar an Address Bokk settings, it gives me the error "Unable to login to synch engine".
If i open the program after installation from the program menu, it gives me "Invalid user name" error.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

Is there any workaround to resolve the problem? If you meant to say that events with a start-date of less then 1970 don't get synchronised, then no, there is no workaround. This is a fundamental limitation of Unix timestamps as used by the calendar server to represents event dates.
2)
To clarify, the problem with Cyrillic characters becoming corrupted occurs when you sync contacts which exists only on the windows mobile device to the server-side addressbook? --- Yes it is
Does this corruption occur if you synchronise a contact created on the server to the windows mobile client? ---- only birthday is wrong on pocket after syncThe birthday being incorrect is likely to be a different issues.
A quick search didn't reveal any existing reports of the behaviour you are seeing and I have no way to reproduce the problem myself to investigate further so I suggest once again logging a Sun support case for these two issues (birthday & Cyrillic character corruption).

Physical standby database standby redo log problem
Hello
We have a physical standby database , I've created some standby redo log files but my problem is that they aren't used,
their status in v$stanby_log view is UNASSIGNED
and I see this message (ORA-16086: standby database does not contain available standby log files) in primary database alert_log file
while when I run "alter system switch logfile" in the primary database it transfer redo logs to the physsical standby database
and archive log file will be created in standby database
I've even recreated the standby redo log files and I added new ones to them but the problem wasn't solved
Do you know what is problem ?

No space in recovery area for active standby redo logs
The primary database is operating in MAXIMUM PROTECTION
or MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY mode, and the standby database
does not contain adequate disk space in the recovery area
to safely archive the contents of the standby redo logfiles.
ORA-16086: standby database does not contain available standby log files
when I saw this line "No space in recovery area for active standby redo logs" I thought that STANDBY_ARCHIVE_DEST parameter points where that there is no enough space , but when I consider I found out that points a directory on disk a "sda" that has enough space , I don't know what that means
by the way, at below I've written a section of the primary database alert_log context and "lgwr" trace file around Sun Jan 31 13:30:34 2010

Using Customized page for logging in
Hi all,
I am trying to use an html page for logging into Sun Identity manager.
Actually we have an html page, on which we have a section in which the user can enter the credentials.
Now when he clicks the submit button, then the user should be able to login SIM.
I thought that in backend we can pass the values entered in html page to user/login.jsp.
But i am not getting in which attributes, we should get these values on user/login.jsp because i think,in backend it also calls some form and i am unable to get which form it is calling.
Any pointers can be helpful.
Thanksi dont thik its possible use a separate html page for login.you can customise the login page(bit difficult but you can do it there are some css and .properties files are associated with that)

Hello,
- I installed the Web Services Developer Pack (1.3 version) of Sun recently.
- I am able to run the JSF examples provided in the pack.
But, i am not able to turn on the logging for the JSF examples.
- I went through the README file provided in <JWSDP Install Root>jsf\docs folder
- I find mention of "set CATALINA_OPTS..." in the README file. I am not able to decipher where to
set this.
Please provide content of a sample properties file. I want to TRACE/ DEBUG the JSF RI.
Any help in this regard would be useful.
-sriniAn example on UNIX would be:
(user@hobbiton)-(~/jwsdp-1.3)
-> export CATALINA_OPTS="\
-- -Dorg.apache.commons.logging.Log=org.apache.commons.logging.impl.SimpleLog \
-- -Dorg.apache.commons.logging.simplelog.log.com.sun.faces=debug"
(user@hobbiton)-(~/jwsdp-1.3)
-> ./catalina.sh run -
Sun Java Communications Sync - VISTA
Hi,
Is there any version on Sun Java Communications Sync for VISTA ? because i installed it on VISTA it gives me an error, it does not start.lock123 wrote:
1) Contacts with birthday less then 1970 are stored in calendar server with birthday 1970 after synchronization from device. You cannot store contacts in the calendar server. The calendar server only stores events and tasks. Contacts are stored in the LDAP directory server.

Please help with Sun Java System Communications Sync crashe with IEx 7.x
Dear All!
Recently i've upgrade my IExplorer to 7.x version. After that i began to have problems with Communications Sync (latest version). When i try to sync Outlook 2003 with the server (SSL connection/ self signed certificate) the Comm Sync asks if i want to allow to open connection with wrong certificate (happed only after installing IEx 7.x) and then when i press YES it crashes.
Any help on how to fix this problem is appriciated.
Konstantin
P.S.: Adding a self signed certificate to IEx DB and adding the website to the trusted websites list did not help.Hi,
Not sure how much we can help with this issue - especially if you are already running the latest version of the sync tool. About all I can offer is to uninstall your current sync software and reinstall the latest public version:
http://sunsolve.sun.com/private-cgi/getpatch.pl (search for patch #124734).
If that doesn't help I suggest you log a sun support case for this (assuming you have a sun support contract that is).
Regards,
Shane.
