Do any events fire when the Flash Player exits?

Hey all.
I use a LocalConnection object to prevent being able to run our SWF multiple times on the same computer.
The problem is that this connection can remain in place even when the SWF which called it closes.
I have:
1) An External Interface call to dispose() all HTML pages call dispose() on pageunload which closes the connection.... But this is unreliable because if the browser crashes, you are locked out of the SWF
2) I tried some crazy try/catch.  If SWF A exists and SWF B tries to be initialised.... SWFB cannot connect so it sends a function to SWFA to dispose(). This should free the connection for SWFB to connect to?  But this does not work well either because sometimes a localconnection can be in use but calling "dipose()" throws an error, often because the LocalConnection swf which should be available is already gone.
What this all comes down to, is that I need a way to detect when the player closes, so i can close the localconnection.
stage.addEventListener(Event.EXIT, onExit);
function onExit(e:Event): void
         if (localconnection)
                localconnection.close();
Does anything like this exist?
Thanks,

Thanks for taking the time to answer kglad!
I should have been clearer it is a Web App, so your answer remains valid.
I have not completely followed you on your advice.. When you say "So it only prevents another swf from running if something is returned from a currently running swf".
Could you expand on that? I am desperate to fix the issue, but it just seems localconnection is not the best method for "single swf execution". I just have not found any other methods.
Thanks.

• Any solutions to stop the Flash player Update service 11.6 r602 from crashing?

Hello this is the second time i post something that is related to this my computer keeps running the Flash player Update service and that keeps crashing causing some of my games to crash also. I run a windows 7 professional edition on my computer. This problem started about 2 weeks ago and it seems that i am getting ignored by all the staff and everybody else because seems to give me advice. I have tried multiple step, i have tried a clean boot, i also did a scan of the security files of microst to se if there was something wrong with the files i know it's a bug in the coding. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling problem is it's always running and i cannot disable it because i don't see any programs running on flash in my process. I have talk to multiple tech support and since this has been going on for two weeks and adobe has no tech support only a community of experts it has not gotten resolved and won't be anytime soon so plz if you have advice plz inlighten me cuz i am done it's getting really old really fast. this is the description of the problem here if you have the same problem, what do we do cuz we are a bunch just walking around like chicken's not knowing what do to

Hi, I've been working on this problem on my computer, windows vista, for a while now
and since nothing can correct this problem
I just now discovered that there are two flashplayerupdateservice.exe on my hard drive!
one in my windows\system32 directory and
the other one in windows\system32\MacroMed\Flash
exactly the same version, same everything, 11.6.602.180 both of them
I suspect having two copies of the same program is what makes it crash.
Can Adobe please fix this problem? It's just annoying, does not hurt and you can leave it alone
and go on with your business, but it would be nice to get rid of that error message.
Thanks

• Firefox page stop refreshing(drawing) when the flash plugin exit full screen mode.

While watching youtube video from youtube.com in full screen mode (this is flash player full screen mode, not browser full screen mode), if you exit the full screen mode, some times the original page when the full screen was started from would stop drawing, not responding to the mouse click in the page area. The page will go back to normal if you click and drag the firefox browser title bar or just resize the browser window.
I initially found this issue with our company's browser plugin product when testing on Firefox 4. Then I went on trying the same scenario with youtube flash player, it is the same behavior.
It is not difficult to reproduce, if exiting full screen works fine, move the browser window a little bit and try it again. I can reproduce this once every 5 - 10 times. It is very annoying.
The same test case works on Safari, Google Chrome without any problem. Please fix this!

Try to disable the hardware acceleration in the Flash Player.

• Does the Flash Player (Win7 / IE 9+) cache content outside of the browser?

I have encountered a technical issue using Flash (CC) content in Captivate 7.  I am distributing the content to a customer with approximately 1000 Windows PC's running IE 9 +.  Some of these computers have no issue but a small number experience a problem which prevents them from downloading content after an undetermined point.  There is no apparent pattern to identify either a fault in the content or a fault in the workstation build.
The problem looks like this:
The user is able to access the content - sometimes several courses, sometimes only one.
At some point during a course -it will stop playing (failing to load the next page).
The user can close the course and reload - but is always stops in the same place it originally failed.
The user can load previously accessed courses and these work without issue.
The user is unable to load any new courses (previously un-accessed) - resulting in a blank page.
No application events are logged when this occurs so there is little to examine when it occurs.  We have anecdotal evidence that the issue can sometimes be resolved by clearing the browser cache - but not always.  Also - we have unconfirmed reports that the problem can "resolve itself" after several weeks.
From my perspective it looks like one of the following scenarios is causing the problem:
The Flash Player is caching content in a location other than the browser cache and reaches a limit.  The cache is not overwriting content so then fails to download any new content.
The Flash Player experiences a problem which prevents it from downloading content (corrupt files, registry issue, or policy restriction).
We have several other customers who access this content at different sites - and none have reported this specific issue, so we are confident that the delivery mechanism is sound.  The customers workstations are generally new machines with plenty of capacity, and they have a 200 Mb leased line connection to the Internet.  The customer has assured us they do not use a caching proxy server on site, nor any bandwidth optimisation tools so in theory, the client connection is direct to the Internet.  Additionally - the fact that this issue affects isolated workstations suggests the problem lies at the endpoint - not in the transmission path.
Has anyone encountered this type of issue before - or does anyone have any knowledge of Flash Player caching operations?
Regards

IE will roll cache like any other browser. Keep as much as the user allows and start recycling when that gets filled. At no point will IE "fill up" on any single or multiple sites and be unable to download any more content. Downloading is all a browser does and Flash is not excluded from that unlimited party. However if you never remove content properly and continue to download endless content, you could encounter RAM issues. You don't have unlimited RAM so you may be hitting a wall. But as long as you're disposing any content you loaded that you no longer need, that isn't an issue.
You're going to need to install some custom logging if you really want to debug a clients client. The most popular thing a Flash application will do is fail silently and lock up because you did not provide any failsafe measures for various common issues. From common crossdomain policy issues to flaky connections failing in the middle of a download, you need to handle all these situations and act appropriately. If any content is failing to load in Flash you can be sure if you try {} catch () {} you'll be given a top level chance to send out a log notice to yourself. That's of course assuming you have the standard IOErrorEvent, SecurityErrorEvent, etc already in place to also log.
If you had access to the offending machines then opening the developer tools in IE and using the network manager would be the easiest way to see what's going on. If you click to load more content and see no network request, the requesting itself has an issue (could be a million reasons). If you see the request go out then you'll either see it fail in the middle or complete. If it fails you should have code to handle that. If it completes and the app still locks up, you probably have ABC that isn't playing nicely and should be "caught" and logged.
There's just no one way to approach this. Only layers of error handling and logging are your best friends when it comes to debugging this kind of thing.
Personally I've seen clients boast they have XMbit lines and their network is otherwise perfect, when it had old grade (100mbit) eth cables and the little things that schools and large companies tend to overlook in the long run. It's easy to replace a faulty switch or eth card but in-wall cable, not so often.

• What event fires when a captivate ends?

Hello,
I'm a web app developer and I'm working with Captivate. I'm not a captivate designer myself, just a programmer, so I don't know the first thing about Captivate (though I'm working with someone who does). I'm wonder if there's an event that fires when the captivate is done--that is, when the user clicks on the "submit" button on the last slide after which there is nothing more for the captivate to do.
My friend the Captivate designer says the submit button is wired up to an event handler in the CPM.js file. The script is named "assessment_Pass" and we've located the event handler in CPM.js. However, I can't work with this. I can't manually manipulate minimized javascript that Captivate generates, especially when we've got hundreds of captivate files and keep getting updated. I need to work in the javascript in my Visual Studios project. If I could know what event fires (if an event fires) when the captivate is done, I can then wire it up to a javascript event handler in my development environment.
I found this list of Captivate events (they're actually for the Captivate API Interface, which I'd prefer to work with, but any event will do), but none of the one's I tried seem to fire.
Any help is much appreciated.
Events are exposed only for interactive objects (buttons, button smartshapes, etc.) and ON_SLIDE_ENTER and ON_SLIDE_EXIT (the latter of which actually fires on the first frame of the *following* slide, unless it's been fixed in Cp8).
Well, it's a submit button on the captivate that's supposed to fire the event. Is that an interactive object?
Maybe if you explained what you are trying to accomplish I could point you in the right direction. Maybe you could use the CPAPI_MOVIESTOP or CPAPI_VARIABLEVALUECHANGED events and check if on the last slide.
I would like to know when the captivate ends (i.e. when the user has gone through all the slides and has clicked the submit button) and to do some processing in javascript afterwards (essentially, calculate the user's score and figure out whether they passed or failed).
I'm trying the CPAPI_VARIABLEVALUECHANGED event on a captivate variable called "result". My friend the Captivate designer says that when the user clicks the last submit button, a script is run to change the value of this variable. When it changes, this event should be fired and I should be able to catch it, no?
I'm doing it like this:
_captivateWindow.cpAPIEventEmitter.addEventListener("CPAPI_VARIABLEVALUECHANGED", "result", ResultChanged);
var ResultChanged = function()
alert("hello");
but I'm not getting my hello message.
I will try the timer idea that andreleal suggested and get back to you.

• When I try to run video on any website, why do I get just the Flash Player logo?

And why is it so difficult to get an answer to this basic question? The problem started on this computer just a week ago; until then, YouTube and any other video-oriented website ran fine. Now every video I try to view comes up as a blank (gray) screen with the Flash Player logo Anin the middle of it. I've jumped through every hoop on the "Help" website, to no avail.

• How do you stop the flash player when you change pages on a web site

Hi all;
I'm building a website in flash using my limited understanding of action script.  Everything was progressing very well until I found that if I go to one of my example pages of my web site and play the flash video (with audio) and click back to my "home" button, the audio will continue to play.  If I go back to the example page, the video is off and when I start the video, it plays again with the other audio.  I hear the audio twice! I know there is an action script to handle this but, I can't figure it out.
My question is, How do I stop the audio when I click away from the example page back to the home page or any other page?
Thanks in advance for your help.
I'm usinf Flash CS4 and a Mac OS operating system.

The problem is most likely in your Action Script. Therefore this question should be posted in the Action Script forum. This forum only deals with the Flash Player, which, in this case is running the script as it is written, and therefore, working properly.

• Can the Flash Player do frame accurate seeking when using the HDS protocol?

Hi all,
... and thanks in advance for taking the time to respond. I've been playing with different media serving protocols, and I have a couple of questions.
1. Can the Flash Player do frame accurate seeking when media is served via the HDS protocol? (I know it works  using RTMP)
2. If it does work, is it impacted in any way if I also use Access DRM-Core or Access DRM-Professional? (I want stronger DRM protection than simple Access Protected Streaming)
Thanks!

Hello Simona_83.  Try downloading Google Chrome (it's free).  Install Flash Player via Chrome, and use Chrome as your browser.  This is the only thing that worked for me after over a month of trying everything under the sun to get Flash Player working again.  You'll have to use Chrome as your browser in order to have Flash Player capability, but so what.  It works.  If it works for you as it works for me, you will have Youtube again; you just have to access Youtube via Chrome.  Don't waste hours of your life trying to get Flash Player to work any other way.  Believe me, I wasted hours upon hours off and on over the course of a month trying to get Flash Player installed and operating.

• Trying to find the URL used when installing Flash player via ActiveX pop-up

I'm trying to determine what URL would be used when a customer clicks on the Activex Pop-up to install Flash player.
I've found a document that indicates the URL used when updating Flash Player via the Auto updater, but I think they are different URLs....  Can anyone help?

thanks guys for the replies.
Just to clarify, I am in no way having troubles installing Flash player.  I'm a tech specialist, and have been for many years.  I am fully able and aware of how to update Flash player.
What I am trying to get is the URL that would be used when a client click on the "Install Adobe Flash Player" ActiveX Pop-up.
thanks for the URLs you sent, and I do have those, I'm just wondering if any can confirm "as for sure as possible" what URL is used with that ActiveX Pop up.
Our corporate has several web-based products that do NOT work with th emost recent version of Flash Player.
We are trying to find all possible Flash Player installer URLS that are used, so we can block them on our Proxy server.
Thanks again for everyone's reply, and if anyone knows for sure the info I need, please let me know

• CPU usage when scaling the flash player

Do anybody know about how flash player render the content when we do the scaling?
Let's say i have 2 flash swf file.
swf1 : the stage size is 2000 px x 2000 px. + 1 movieclip with 100% transform
swf2 : the stage size is 1000 px x 1000 px. + 1 movieclip with 50% transform
Let's say there is a movie clip on swf1. So i copy the same movie clip to 1000 px x 1000 px file and transform the movieclip to 50%.
So it will look the same if i scale the swf2 x 2.
If there is any different on swf1 and swf2 in team of CPU usage or etc?
Like is it true when playing swf2 need more CPU usage than swf1 because swf2 need to do the scaling but swf1 not.
Just not sure which way i should develop the content.
Because i have to make some content and the width/height are about 3000 px. So i am thinking if i should set the stage close to limit 2880 or just make the content like swf2.
And my concern is if it will use more CPU when do the scaling.

Thx Justin.
Yes, it is for video wall. And it may more than 5000 px.
But I don't really scale it in the flash file and i didn't handle anything about the scaling. It scale when doing full size of the screen. So if my content is 1000px and put it to 5000 px resolution. It will scale to 5 times more in the flash player.
So is it any different if i make the same content on 2000px stage and 1000px stage? The stage for me is just a reference size for the flash player. And the flash player will handle content depend on how many pixel show on the screen. So if i import a 200 px bitmap and scale it 50% on 1000 px stage and import  a 200 px bitmap and scale it 100% on 2000 px stage, the 1000px stage will look half size of 2000 px. But when i scale the flash player to double on 1000 px stage swf, the picture quality and anything will look the same as 2000 px stage swf.
So any different between in team of the cpu, ram or etc?

• Why can't I install the flash player on my Kindle Fire???

I have tried several times to install the flash player on my Kindle Fire but it keeps telling me there is an issue opening the download. How am I able to download it yet am unable to install it. It makes no sense to me why it would be able to download yet not be able to open the installation. Is this a problem that is being fixed? I've tried to "troubleshoot" this issue myself but there is little information on it. If the Kindle Fire is unable to install the Adobe Flash player then there needs to be some changes made either on your companies part or Amazons. There are apps offered on the Kindles that need this flash player in order to operate. If you could back to me with an answer as soon as possible I would greatly aprreciate it. Thank you.

Hi,
Although we continue to provide security and patch releases for Android devices which originally shipped with Adobe Flash Player, new feature development for the Android browser has drawn to a close as we shift our focus to Adobe AIR for mobile applications. For more details on the rationale for our decision I refer you to the following article.

The following article describes how to manually install the Adobe Flash Player manually on your Android device.

Another alternative is to install the SkyFire browser, which appears to support Flash Video.

• Any way to get moviecontrollers in the Flash Player preview?

I test my flashfiles (banner ads) several times during making by pressing Ctr+Enter. The movie then opens up in the Flash Player.
It would be really useful to have play/skip/forward/backward/pause/stop (just regular moviecontrollers) buttons in the player to skip straight to the right part (not as part of the file).
Is there any way to add this to flash? A plugin/extension maybe?

in the test environment, click control and check the keyboard shortcuts.  if you don't like those shortcuts, you can create your own in the keyboard shortcuts panel.
