Do Apple engineers actually post to the ADC developer forums?

Apple claim that their engineers post on the ADC developer forums. Is this actually true?
I'm wondering if its worth paying membership fees for the ADC, one of the things that would attract me is if its possible to get answers to questions
in its forum that can't be found in other forums.(questions which are perhaps off-the-beaten-track and you won't find answers to in how-to Cocoa type books. i.e. questions about .kexts, nkes, accessing the modem etc. (mac modem not iphone modem) and so on).
Is there a good degree of accurate knowledgeable feedback, from Apple Engineers, or knowledgable experienced developers in that forum?
Thanks

You do need to be a paid ADC member. I just joined the iPhone program. I can see the iPhone forums but not the MacOS X forums.
You can also post on the Apple mailing lists. Apple engineers regularly post there as well.
Keep in mind that there is not necessarily anything special about an Apple engineer. They aren't going to impart any confidential information. Even if they did, such information would probably change without notice at some pointer - that was why it was confidential. A non-Apple engineer may actually have more experience than someone from Apple and could give you unfettered opinions about various technologies.

I assume that you you tried tapping and holding down on the document and the keyboard would not pop up and the insertion point did not appear.
If you want to start with a clean slate, tap the Documents button in the upper left corner. When in thumbnail view you can tap the edit button in the upper right - find that blank document that you just closed - tap on it and then tap the trash can in the upper left to delete it.

Could someone please clean up those unsightly "Moved" posts from the Welcome & FAQ forum?

I deleted them all since the most recent was several weeks old.  That doesn't, however, mean that more won't be added as questions are mistakely placed there and then moved to the proper board.  Perhaps your earlier suggestion of locking it as an announcement-only board is one that we should consider.

  • When is Apple going to open up the iPhone Developer Program?

I signed up for the iPhone Developer Program almost as soon as one could sign up for it. I was one of the unlucky many who got the "you are not important enough to let into the Developer Program" e-mail. That was months ago when the rumor was that they would be opening it up around the time of the WWDC. Well, it is now WWDC time. Is there any more info on this?
Why don't I use the iPhone Simulator? The iPhone Simulator does not simulate the accelerometer very well (i.e., it does not simulate it at all) and the accelerometer is important for my app. I can't even tell if my app is feasible without running some test code so that I can get a real world sense of how well the accelerometer works.
Between this and the significant issues that I am having with my MBP and Apple's lack of response, I am starting to feel that I picked a bad time to start doing Apple development.

Excuse me, but Apple clearly has decided that some application developers are more important than others. The App Store is opening up next month and I don't think they will be selling apps that haven't been QA'ed on real devices. Oh, I get it. All of the big name mobile software vendors that Apple wants to display in their App Store just happened to get randomly selected.
"Apple has no way of knowing who has real apps ..." Well, I told them that I did. I even told them that it uses the accelerometers, so the simulator wouldn't help.
You note that Apple says that there are 21k developers in a holding pattern. What is it about the iPhone Developer Program that stops Apple from just taking people's money and issuing them cookies (or whatever) that allows the downloaded SDK to load apps on real devices? Inviting people over to your house to install your app on their iPhone/iPod touch is not a very good distribution model; the App Store is needed for distribution. The limiting factor is the gatekeeper for the App Store, not a SDK that can run code on real devices. So, why don't they freely distribute a SDK that can run code on real devices?
After telling the world "look, a SDK for the iPhone" months ago, why can't Apple even give a date to 21k people who took the time to sign up for the Program when they might be able to run their apps on real hardware?
I want to do things the right way (through Apple's SDK) and I really don't like the idea of jailbreaking, but right now that seems like the only option that I have to proceed with my app development.

  • Email notification different from actual post

Something I just noticed and am wondering about. Recently I have received some email notifications that are quite different from what is actually posted on the thread. In one, the link was different and there was some differences in wording. In another, there was more text in the post than there was on the email. This seems different from what I am accustomed to seeing, which would often be edited versions of the same post. It seems like the email is an earlier version of the post, but I can't be sure. It has sparked my curiosity, and I am just wondering why this is happening. Has anybody else noticed this?

    S.U.,
As Miriam states, unchecking the edit box will cause the reply to not have that info.
I, like Miriam, will occasionally uncheck the edit box but in my case it usually has to do with the fact that I have edited the post more than once and found that if I don't uncheck the edit box on successive edits there will be a long string of edited text below the post. Just cleans up the post a bit. I too, have been guilty of vanity in editing, as I'm sure that most are here.....after all, aren't we all perfect typists here?

I suggested that SAP does not make its own metadata sufficiently transparent to support all activities requiring knowlege of SAP architecture, particularly activities such as "AsIs:ToBe" mappings in Legacy -> ERP conversions, or creation of ES(O)A services.
So I'd like to share something that recently happened at work, in order to illustrate this point.
The customer is opening a plant in a different country and must run SAP in a different language.
So the first thing it wants to do is run SMLT with a list of tables that are involved in the transactions which will be run in the new language.
Ah - but how to get this list of tables ...!
Shouldn't there be an absolutely transparent utility which takes the set of transactions from the blueprint and produces a list of tables that need to be fed to SMLT to support these transactions?
Alternatively, shouldn't SAP "open up" the metadata and metaprocesses behind the Repository Information system, so that an enterprising customer can write such a utility itself?
    Am I missing something here?
If so, I've posted this post in the ABAP General Forum also, so that anyone who wants some points can tell everyone how and why this problem is really not a problem.  (If more than one good solution is posted, I promise I'll ask Craig/Mark to award "10" to each one.)<br><br>

Must be that there isn't any simple "off-the-shelf" solution, huh?

  • Censorship on Adobe ColdFusion forums - Open letter to the management of the Adobe ColdFusion forums

This is reproduced from its original location at http://cfmlblog.adamcameron.me/2013/06/censorship-on-adobe-coldfusion-forums.html; it is also posted on the relevant ColdFusion forum. Apologies for the cross-post, but the two forums have different membership, and I think it's relevant to both.
Open letter to the management of the Adobe ColdFusion forums
(I do not know how to contact you, but I will try to find out and send this to you directly as well, as a courtesy).
    Hi.
I am a veteran user of your ColdFusion support forums. Over the last decade or so I have been visiting the site daily (indeed several times a day: I get notified when any post is made on any of your ColdFusion-centric forums), and answering as many of people's questions as I can. For the last few years it's been via the web UI so you can go check my participation, but prior to that I was using the forums via NNTP, and my participation during that period is less easy to quantify, but it's to the tune of a few thousand posts / answers to people's questions. I consider myself an asset to the forums, and the ColdFusion community. I mean this just as "for the record", rather than any attempt to inflate any sense of my worth.
However as of today - unless you take remedial action as I will go on to detail - I will be surrendering my membership of your forums, and ceasing all attempts to assist people there.
Why am I considering doing this? Well firstly I will reproduce a thread from your forums, then I will discuss it. Where possibly the quoted material below is as it was initially posted, and if it's not exactly as originally presented, this is an accident on my part. I have highlighted some points I wish to discuss with you, simply for ease of cross-reference.
I have confirmed with Jason Dean (12Robots) that is happy for me to quote him here. I did not attempt to contact the other participant: "grazan".
Below is a chronological reproduction of the thread (in its original form, anyhow):

    First, ColdFusion is one word.
Second, what is a WIndows 8 server?
Third, and most important, you have provided ZERO detail. We can't help you if you don't provide something other than "none of our cfm web pages work".  ColdFusion has logs (<coldfusionDir>/logs) JRun has logs (<coldfusionDir>/runtime/logs). Even if the Windows event viewer shows nothing, there should be info in those log files about what is going on.

Well if you got over your misplaced indignation for a moment, let's see:
ColdFusion is what people will google for, so in the spirit of helping others who might have the same question as you later on, spelling it right will help the community.
Jason's observation that you give us absolutely nothing to go on so it's basically impossible to help you is a fairly poignant observation, right? You do want help? Right, so here's some suggestions:
Articulate your issue clearly, with sufficient detail that we can help you. Read this:
    http://www.catb.org/esr/faqs/smartquestions.html
Secondly... being rude to someone like Jason who really is one of the most helpful people on
these forums is a pretty stupid idea. And just serves to make you look a bit of a dick. Esp. with the caps lock on.
But anyway, let's call that a false start. Give us the details of your issue, and we'll try to help.
    Cheers.

    Forum admin,
You censored the comment "ColdFusion is one word"?  Seriously?
I didn't realize that suggesting that someone spell the name of the product correctly was against the forum guidelines.  I guess I could go look it up, but I will just unsubscribe and help out at Stack Overflow instead.
    Good luck,

Please see how much I used to help out on these forums.
I'm outa here, but not before I complain about your dictatorial behaviour.
    Censorial nazi idiot.
[The entire message above has now been redacted].
That's the end of the relevant part of the thread.
Clearly I wish to speak to you about this censorship your moderator is choosing to undertake.
Firstly, let me say that I understand the perception that forums require moderation. Personally I think this position is of dubious merit, but so be it: it's a common practice. And I generally understand when I see things that have been moderated, or when a moderator step in and advises that they consider someone's wording contravenes forum guideline. I understand all this.
    However.
I think the behaviour of your moderator in this situation is unacceptable. Let me elaborate.
Firstly, The highlighted comment of Jason's was removed. This comment stated - correctly - that the correct spelling of ColdFusion is as one word, as per his guidance. This comment was censored/redacted by your moderator. For the life of me, applying my most "socially modest" mindset, I cannot see what was wrong with Jason's comment, and why it needed any follow-up on any description. It was accurate advice.
The original poster's response to Jason was indeed a bit gratuitous, but - really - so what? No-one is taking offence here, and there's nothing anyone reasonable could take offence at. The person is just being a bit childish in their response. And, I hasten to add, at their own expense, I think. I see not reason to have redacted what they said.
We now come to my responses. One entire response I made was redacted (I've only just noticed this, whilst proofreading this letter).  A number of tracts was redacted from my own initial post on the thread. Here I was simply explaining why Jason said what he did, and why it's good advice. And it was good advice. Your moderator here has removed both good advice, and an explanation as to why it was good advice. Again, I cannot fathom why your moderator has done this.
Following on from this I back-up Jason's assertion that the original post was inadequate on detail for us to help. This too is accurate. I reiterated this to try to make the origial poster see that Jason wasn't simply being unhelpful - to the contrary - pointing out we need more information before we can help is very good initial advice here. Advice that has now been deleted.
Next is some slightly contentious wording on my part, I suppose... at least if one doesn't actually read what I say, instead simply zooming in on one word and assessing it out of context. I pointed out that being abusive and writing in all-caps is unnecessary, and makes the person look like a dick. Note I didn't say the person was a dick (that would be abuse... very mild though), I was saying that given the behaviour the person was engaging in, they could be perceived that way. Which is... accurate. And saying someone is a dick and suggesting they could be perceived as a dick are two different things. One is ad hominem attack (bad), one is simply an observation / guidance (not bad).
At this point Jason drew my attention to this censorship going on. And this is another thing that I think is inappropriate on the part of the moderator. I have little problem with them thinking that content on this thread needs censorship (whilst they are wrong, they are entitled to their opinion), to silently and anonymously redact people's posts is an inappropriate - and to be frank cowardly - handling of this situation. If the moderator has an issue with something written on the forums, the courteous and professional thing to do would be to advise the participants that they have overstepped. This would give us a chance to remediate the situation, or to simply disagree. Simply excising someone's work - because this is volunteer work we are engaging in here - is unacceptable.
If anything ought to have been censored from the thread it was my last comment. Whilst it was accurate, I did use harsh sentiment, I accept this. However in the given situation, I don't think I have been the most out-of-line participant in proceedings.
I would like you to remediate this situation, and here is how I would like you to do it.
Restore Jason's original post. There was no reason to censor it.
Restore grazan's all-caps post. It was doing no harm.
Restore my second post (not the one laughing at Jason's joke, the longer one I discuss above). Again, useful and accurate information was removed from this post, and there was simply no reason to have had done so.
You can leave my last comment redacted. Fair enough. Whilst I stand by what I said, it is unhelpful in the context of the thread.
I also want the moderator to be censured, and I would like them to apologise for their behaviour, by posting on that thread explaining that they understand their behaviour was inappropriate and unacceptable.
If they are a community volunteer, they should be dismissed from their position. They are clearly not capable of fulfilling this role in a professional, well-balanced manner.
If they are an Adobe staff person, then the censure will have to be sufficient, although I think they should be relieved from their duties as a forum moderator, as they are not up to the task at hand.
Talk to your other moderators and advise them they need to act with a sense of balance and professionalism when moderating the forums.
In return, I will continue my participation on the forums, and continue to help the ColdFusion community members where I can, in the spirit of goodwill and co-operation. I will also try to convince Jason to do the same.
If you cannot see right to resolve this situation appropriate, I will surrender my membership of the forums and cease helping your community.
You can reply to me either via a comment against this post, or via email ([email protected]). That said, see the caveats in my communications policy: I reserve the right to publish any communications on this topic as I see fit (within the bounds of common sense).
    Thanks for your time.
    Adam Cameron

    Adam,
    Comments from a kindred spirit...
I suggest you take a breather and go do something else for a few days or weeks.  Don't stomp your feet and say "I'm done for good, I won't be back", because like it or not, some of the reason you're here is to benefit YOU, and if you do go cold turkey you'll miss that benefit.
In other words, "never say never".
Like you, I have been extremely frustrated by the running of the forum from time to time as well.  Sometimes it's the quality of the forum software, sometimes it's the mix of other immature people who comment, sometimes it's just me.  Usually it's not the moderation or actual running of the forum, but I do understand where you're coming from.
I have benefited greatly on several occasions just by taking a vacation from forum participation.
We all have to understand two things:
    1.  We're able to communicate here by the good graces of Adobe, who are first and foremost a business, trying to achieve their business goals.  They'd rather not upset all the idiots, because unfortunately idiots have money to spend too.
    2.  Nobody's perfect.
I'm not sure about the specifics, but the moderators are generally also volunteers.  See item 2 above.
Hope you don't choose to stop contributing to the community, as no matter what, your contribution is good for the world.
    -Noel

    Hi,
I need to find a way to get parked items moved into a cleared status with out actually posting the item for payment.  I do not have a PO or goods receipt to post them to. There are some invoicese which we are not paying but we want to keep those items in the history of the vendor. I need to be able to run a parked report of open items and not have these pull into that report.  I have a some parked invoices  for various vendors that I need to get moved into the cleared status.
Requesting you to provide suggestion on this to proceed.

My MacBook Pro shows the logo in a white screen when I ask for a Software Update under the apple. Actually it stays blank on Featured, Top Charts, Categories and Purchases as well. What up? Thanks.

I am having exactly the same problem right now. After some research, it looked like my HD was toast. I replaced it today, that part was easy, but now I cannot seem to use my original Install Disk to format the new HD. I get a grey restart screen, or if I get to the Language Selection screen, my cursor is frozen in left corner and I can't use it.
Very frustrating, hope someone else has some ideas!
PS My MacBook was about same age, and "expired" in exactly the same way as yours.

  • Download an Apple mail lists and converting the post to emlx files

    Hello,
its about to get, on the Apple mail lists, posts and converting those to emlx files.
Does someone has experience with this, or is there any tool or script already on the web to do that?
    Thanks in advance

The directory layout is pretty simple. You could use wget to grab it all and work on it at leisure. Use Perl scripts to walk through the directories. For the HTML itself, you could use Perl or something like tagsoup to make sense out of it. I suggest just outputting the result into a plain old mbox format and let Apple Mail do the work to convert it into emlx.

I had already logged in, but I do it anyway. I type in my password, and click Log In. I am back in the Tips Library, and now logged in. Accuracy. Before allowing a post to be considered a valid answer to a frequently asked question about using Macs, Apple wants to make sure it is actually a correct answer and an appropriate solution to whatever technical problem is being addressed.
Also, why do I see only a few posts in the User Tips Contributions forum?
Once the Hosts have approved a user contribution, it is removed from Contribution forum...
Why do I see people's post in the main User Tips Library but yet you said

The approved posts are moved to the User Tips Library. In other words, you can't post there; the Hosts move your approved tip to that forum.
Read through the steps explained in the section titled "The Process" on both pages. It explains this in detail.

  • ***TO APPLE ENGINEERS***   FCP7 SmoothCam Effect KNOWN BUG

    Hey Apple Engineers
The smoothcam effect in FCP7 has a known bug where the video is "jittery" on export. It seems to be associated with the interlacing because when viewed as de-interlaced, it works fine.
This has been a known issue and complaint when FCP7 first came out and it still has not been fixed.
FCP6 was the first to feature this effect and it worked great. Everyone, including myself, has raved about it and there were no issues. So how could you take a wonderfully working effect and create a bug in FCP7?
I am hoping this post will get your attention so that you will finally fix this problem.
I hope you read YOUR own discussion boards to LISTEN to YOUR customers and their problems with YOUR software. I've also notified Apple through your tech support but all they can do is "make a report".
FIX THIS LINGERING PROBLEM ALREADY PLEASE!!

  • WHY DO APPLE REMOVE CERTAIN POSTS?

Why do Apple remove some people's posts but leave a lot of others that are off-topic, rude and cynical? Also how does one contact the moderators please?

    HI,
The Hosts (moderators) do keep a bit of an eye on threads and individual Posts.
Those that have attained Level 2 or above can report Posts to the Hosts.
There are a set of options that can define what area the reportee use to describe the issue they think applies to the  Post  that needs looking at.
A balance is attempted to continue the idea of Community.
For instance a frustrated, angry post that might be rude in some people's eyes may stay if someone is dealing with the issue.
It may also stay if someone has already pointed out it has crossed boundaries.
At the same time if a Hosts is satisfied it is rude then it will be removed from view (they are never deleted)
Again, Off Topic can be a bit a grey area.
Community fostering posts are generally left.
An issue may start with one title but actually turn into a thread about something else.
For instance some Apple apps will not launch in Helvetica is missing or Damaged. Someone may report Messages will not launch when they in fact have a Font issue.
The best place is to report and link it here https://discussions.apple.com/community/using_apple_support_communities

  • First off, i think it's sad that i have to use my non apple device to post this question... Why has my iPad become absolutely useless after updating to iOS 8.1? I am unable to use my mini because it crashes, slow performance, major battery drain.

Restore iPad to Factory Default; do not restore from backup. It may be the cause of the problem.

"If you've forgotten the Apple ID password how did you log in to make the last post?"
Exactly! The password I used to log on here and write my post I figured was the same Apple ID password I would use to reset my computer login password. But my computer isn't recognizing it as the correct password so it wont let me update my login password. I have 2 user accounts on my computer.
As far as the link you provided, I already looked to that for help earlier. It states:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Users & Groups, click the lock to unlock it, then provide an administrator name and password. Select a user, then click Reset Password.
I did these steps, but I don't remember my admin password. The question is: How do I reset my admin password so I can reset my log in password.
Is my admin password the same password I use to log onto this website to post questions? If so, like I said previously, I already reset that password and my computer isnt recognizing it.
