Do we really need .AFM files anymore in OSX?

Just going through and cleaning up the Font Library at my new workplace. All our work stations are Macs using OSX and Suitcase to manage our fonts. Is there any reason these days to save the .AFM files associated with our Macintosh Type 1 fonts?

I didn't think so, either. But many of these font packages seem old and dating back to the pre OSX days, and they are Mac fonts, not Windows, so I'm wondering what they were even used for.

Time Machine Has All My Music, Do I Need My CDs Anymore?

Silly question, perhaps. Time Machine has ALL my music from my CDs and that music which I have downloaded. Now, I only use my iTunes for listening to music - my CDs are all packed away. So, do I really need my CDs anymore or can I sell them, give them away? If you house catches fire, the CDs are gone anyway and I'm grabbing the Time Capsule . . .

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Unless you also have at least one set of backups off-site, keep them (in your safe deposit box, workplace, relative's house, or other secure place).
I hate to even suggest the possibility, but just the other day someone posted where his Mac and external HD containing his backups were stolen.
You can also lose both your originals and backups in cases of fire, flood, or direct lightning strike on your power lines.
See #27 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for some suggestions.

You'll need to update to at least ACR 8.2 for the 70D to be recognized. The normal way to update PSE12 to the latest CR is to use Help / Updates in the Editor which should update to ACR 8.5.
According to Adobe's website PSE12 shipped with ACR 8.1 and you say it says yours is reported as ACR 8.0.
Are you using PSE 11 and not 12? PSE 11's maximum ACR version is 8.0.

HT4818 When I try to partition my hard drive for Windows 7, I get an error saying The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. I have a 2006 Macbook Pro I believe and I really need assistance as soon as possible.

I have Windows 7 Premium Home and I have downloaded the Drivers and when I click Boot Camp Assistance to partition my hard drive, it says, "The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again." I can't do any backup really because I don't have an external hard drive to work with. I tried repairing disk permissions but that did not do anything. I really need a lot of help with this with some easy, step-by-step tutorials or something. I believe I have a 2006 version of Macbook Pro(4,1).

Once you have obtained an external drive and connected it you will 'clone' your internal drive to it.
Download Carbon Copy Cloner (it is not free but there is a fully functional trial version which is). Use it to clone your internal drive to your external drive. When that is done you will reboot from the clone and use Disk Utility to erase the internal drive (choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) as the format (this is normally preset, but check). Make sure to give the external drive a 'distinctive' name, don't want to get drives mixed up in this process.
Once that is done you will use Carbon Copy Cloner (from the clone) to restore the external to the internal.

Video editing software only needs to save the steps taken to achieve the edit, and references the actual video files from the hard drive. So the saved files are only tiny, and it takes very little drive space to auto save to incrementing file names. I think most regular posters to this forum make a point of updating the file name of a large project every hour or so, and as a direct response to reading so many horror stories like your own. My digital audio workstation works on the same principle; it creates a backup save just in case things go wrong (which--knock on wood--hasn't happened to me) and only references audio/MIDI files that are related to the project.
My advice is to always, always back up sensitive documents. There are lots of ways of doing this, from manually to automatically. (e.g., A lot of higher-end routers let you connect external storage via USB so you can run backup software that detects any changes to a monitored folder over a network and then backs up any changed/updated documents to the connected storage. I prefer to do it myself manually, though.)

Did you try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again? You will not lose data doing a reset.
If this does not work, set it up again as new device, without using the latest backup afterwards.

Your files are unaffected by a reset.. no reset via the reset button on the TC harms, deletes or does anything to your files.
The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on.. all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel.. add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Here is how to do a fully manual setup for TC which is sometimes necessary with Mavericks in particular.

Or if you don't want to delete all of it, you can just discard 1:1 previews using Library->Previews menu - that may or may not buy you the space you need.
If you do opt for deleting the whole thing, here is an idea to keep it from going back to 50G: change the size/quality of standard previews and/or the policy for auto-removing 1:1 previews (Lr Preferences -> Catalog Settings -> File Handling).

AFM Files & Kerning

I am on a mac snow leopard working mostly in Illustrator. Others apps InDesign, After Effects, Premiere. Can someone please explain AFM files, how and when to use them?
Please correct or confirm, but my understanding is that AFM information is in the bitmapepd files of older formats, and within opentype, so there really is no need for .AFM files on the mac.
If the kerning information is in the font already, then why do you always have to kern ones and periods in most fonts. Optical seems to do a better job than auto, but I often later have to tighten the tracking. Is auto using the AFM infomration in the font, and optical is using the Illustrator engine to calculate new kern pairs.

AFM (Adobe Font Metric) files contained detailed metrics associated with legacy Type 1 fonts including not only advance widths, but also information such as pair kerning information that would/should be used for layout programs. On the MacOS, most of the AFM information was also included in the bitmap format files that accompanied the actual font outline file. Since the days of Adobe Type Manager and then the built-in Type 1 font renderer in MacOS, the only reason for the bitmap format files was for this font metric information and in fact, you only needed one such bitmap font file per outline file. For Windows, much of AFM information is stored with the .PFM (PostScript Font Metrics) file that accompanies and is installed with the .PFB (PostScript Font Binary) file containing the actual font outlines and some minimal metrics.
TrueType, TrueType OpenType, and OpenType CFF fonts have all font metrics included in the .TTF or .OTF files themselves and as such, do not require any secondary font metrics information.
Whether you kern using the metrics or automatic/optical option, really depends on your tastes and the font itself. The optical option algorithmically creates pair kerning based upon the actaul fit of two glyphs with each other. The techniques are rather sophisticated, but work amazingly well (except when they don't ).

I've tried to execute J2ee tutorial examples.
I don't know why this sample didn't execute...I've already finished to set up J2EE and enviornment variables.
I was trying this part from j2ee tutorial titled as "Packing Web modules".
Whenever I type "asant create-war" to make web modules in command window. I always got error.
Packaging Web Modules(From J2ee tutorial for your information)
A web module must be packaged into a WAR in certain deployment scenarios and whenever you want to distribute the web module. You package a web module into a WAR using the Application Server deploytool utility, by executing the jar command in a directory laid out in the format of a web module, or by using the asant utility. This tutorial allows you to use use either the first or the third approach. To build the hello1 application, follow these steps:
In a terminal window, go to <INSTALL>/j2eetutorial14/examples/web/hello1/.
Run asant build. This target will spawn any necessary compilations and will copy files to the <INSTALL>/j2eetutorial14/examples/web/hello1/build/ directory.
To package the application into a WAR named hello1.war using asant, use the following command:
asant create-war
This command uses web.xml and sun-web.xml files in the <INSTALL>/j2eetutorial14/examples/web/hello1 directory.
To learn how to configure this web application, package the application using deploytool by following these steps:
Start deploytool.
Create a web application called hello1 by running the New Web Component wizard. Select FileNewWeb Component.
In the New Web Component wizard:
Select the Create New Stand-Alone WAR Module radio button.
In the WAR File field, enter <INSTALL>/j2eetutorial14/examples/web/hello1/hello1.war. The WAR Display Name field will show hello1.
In the Context Root field, enter /hello1.
Click Edit Contents to add the content files.
In the Edit Contents dialog box, navigate to <INSTALL>/j2eetutorial14/examples/web/hello1/build/. Select duke.waving.gif, index.jsp, and response.jsp and click Add. Click OK.
Click Next.
Select the No Component radio button and click Next.
Click Finish.
Select FileSave.
A sample hello1.war is provided in <INSTALL>/j2eetutorial14/examples/web/provided-wars/. To open this WAR with deploytool, follow these steps:
Select FileOpen.
Navigate to the provided-wars directory.
Select the WAR.
Click Open Module.
I guess this step is for checking my system about setup information. I not sure how to change it.

I've installed J2ee with administration 4848, HTTP: 8089 HTTP: 8090
I guess this could refer the target.xml and build.properties. So, I've tried after changing some value, which is fit for my setup.
but, still doesn't work.

ok,
First of all make sure your tutorial folder is installed from the root:
C:\javaeetutorial5
or
D:\javaeetutorial5
it makes things so simple.
Secondly:
set your jee tutorial home
JAVAEE.TUTORIAL.HOME =
C:/javaeetutorial5
Thirdly: check in:
C:\javaeetutorial5\examples\bp-project
make a copy of the build.properties.sample save it as build.propropties, as a property file,
edit the properties file as in:
build.properties
As follows:
# uncomment the property javaee.home, and add the path
# to your GlassFish Java EE 5 SDK installation
javaee.home=c:/Sun/SDK
javaee.tutorial.home=c:/javaeetutorial5
# Uncomment the property j2ee.server.username,

and then test it again.
Take care of editing the property file. It can give you headache.
Note also that this is for application server 9.1 - JEE5.

Same filename from a sender to receiver :: DO we really need UDF ?

This is in refrence of Weblog " same filename from a sender to a receiver file adapter " by Michal Krawczyk.

Actually I worked on another weblog by " Shabarish Vijayakumar "-->

And I am getting file created on the receiver side with the same file name as on the sender side without using the user-defined function mentioned in Michal's weblog.
Now my question do we really need UDF for same file name when on the sender we are polling for one file only by its name.
I am not exaclty getting the benefit of this feature. Can you tell me why do we need this feature as in whatever scenarios I worked I mentioned the file names in both Sender & Receiver File Adapters.
So I am not getting what is the use of using this UDF, when we mention the name of file needs to be created on Receiver side.
