Does Compressor benefit from a RAM upgrade?

I have a dual 2.0 G5 cluster node Xserve that I want to use to do full-time Compressor tasks; mostly MPEG-2 and h.264 transcodes. It will have an attached XRAID as well. If I max out the RAM will I notice a significant decrease in render times on this machine?

I doubt it. Compression is mostly reliant on processor speeds.

  • Does cs4 benefit from 64bit OS ?

    hi there,
since cs4 doesn't work on my current machine (intel p4 3ghz, 2gb ram, winxp) i'll upgrade to a new one (probably core2duo 3ghz, 4gb ram).
my question: should i use windows vista 64bit? does cs4 benifit from a 64bit system ? or would vista just eat additional resources ?
    thanks

Well, most of CS4 (which suite are you getting?) should work on your current machine, albeit not as 'fast' as a modern Core 2 Duo/Quad or AMD equivalent. I'd be tempted to advise you to double your memory. However, as you're upgrading to a new system, there's no point upgrading your old PC.
CS4 will benefit from Vista 64 bit, mainly in the area of Photoshop! PS now comes in 2 flavours, a 32 bit version anbd a 64 bit one. Only Windows users benefit fromm a native 64 bit version of PS by the way!
The other programs will not benefit much if at all from Vista 64 bit right now.
Yes, Vista DOES take up considerably more resources than XP. That said, most modern PC's can handle Vista's extra demands with ease.
Remember just many complained a few years about XP being a 'resouce hog' with its 'huge' 1GB disk space and 512MB memory demands....

  • Why does memory usage increase after RAM upgrade

I upgraded my MBP RAM from 4GB to 8GB. I'm not running any additional applications, so I expected machine's RAM usage to remain the same as it was before upgrade.
However, my RAM usage has increased to 4.6 GB. Why does my machine need more RAM now for the same lot of programs?

Mavericks utilize RAM a bit differently that previous OS ver.
It trys to utilize all available RAM that you throw at it,  this is normal.

  • Does Aperture Benefit from RAIDs???

I was just thinking about getting a RAID-5 external enclosure that would allow high-performance and the protection from a single dive failure. I would use this new drive for Final Cut Pro, Music files, and Photos (Aperture)...
So, my question here is, does Aperture significantly benefit from the speed of a RAID??? Please comment on the speed benefit that you have witnessed by going from a single (high-speed, SATA) drive to a RAID.
    Thanks,
    Robert

Aperture doesn't appear to me to be disk-bound. You get redundancy (and hence more reliability) from a RAID-5 system, but you won't see much increase in the speed of the app. Aperture's problem is that a single 12 Megapixel image takes ~ 100MB of RAM...
Working on a properly configured Mac Pro platform, the workflows of apps handling large quantities of images often are "disk bound." Fast drives and various RAID array configurations can be very beneficial. Optimizing each drives setup, however, is very individual and indeed a challenge.
Also RAM usage IMO is not a problem, RAM is cheap. Any new MP setup should have at least 8 GB RAM (US$450) added to it, minimum 2-GB sized DIMMs.

  • Sore thumbs from iMac RAM upgrade

iMac 27" i7 Ram upgrade from 4GB to 16GB, boy, these ram upgrade really gave my thumbs a hard workout! I've had at least a dozen Ram upgrades across PCs and laptops, never had to push the Rams in as hard as I did today. Still sore thumbs after 3 hours!

    Try hard they pop up.
I just insert a 2x$GB in the free slots and it come with 2x2GB so like 12Gb.
Do you know the plastic tabs to remobe the modules?
I saw that one of them is like the paper in the photo,i see you have some experience upgrading ram so because none answer my post i decide asking you directly.
The 2011 imac is working for almost three months and it recognize the new memory modules but now i know that one of the tabs is touching a ram module,is that big problem?I mean no just because the static energy more because if the module become too hot(I even know if they become hot by use) the tab can burn,is something to worry about or just ignore it?
    Thank you very much.

  • This is the regular status of the memory of my macbook pro. Do you think I need a RAM upgrade?

    Hi there,
I'm hoping to seek the expert views of the community here.
I have a MacBook Pro, Late 2011, 17 inch. Running latest version of Mavericks. Speed seems to have slowed somewhat, perhaps since I upgraded to Mavericks, but not certain about that. Based on my research of the Apple communities, I suspect that I may benefit from a RAM upgrade.
Attached are a few screen shots to assist:
Based on what I have researched in the community, the fact that I have used 3.99GB of 4.00GB, and have used 5.63GB of Virtual memory, seems to suggest to me that I have well and truly maxed out my RAM. Also there is a high number of read ins/outs (but it had been a wheile since I last did a restart on the MBP (if that has any effect on these numbers here).
I have also read that my model of MacBook Pro is upgradeable to 16GB of RAM (2 x 8GB).
Thoughts and views from the community would be greatly appreciated. Will additional RAM help the speed and performance of my MacBook Pro?
    Many thanks.

More RAM is always a Prudent move...

  • Cost/benefit of RAM upgrade for iMac G5 2 GHz from 1.5 to 2.0 GB

Equipment: iMac 20" 2.0 GHz, 250 GB HD, originally 500 MB RAM upgraded to 1.5 GB: (1) 500 MB and (1) 1 GB DDR SDRAM, PC3200U-30330.
Not understanding the subtleties of memory upgrades, I bought this off the shelf with 500 MB RAM. When the processor board was replaced, I added a 1 GB RAM and can't say I noticed any change in performance. It does reduce the need for page outs.
After this, I read something about needing to have the DIMMs matched for there to be a performance gain. Or maybe this related to 64 bit operation? I read elsewhere in the Discussions that 64 bit operation would actually consume more memory and reduce performance.
If I upgraded to 2.0 GB, would there be any improvement in performance? In general or only in certain situations?
If I upgrade RAM, I'll have (2) useless 500 MB DIMMs. Is there any value in these? Where is the best place to sell them or do they have value as trade-ins?
Or is the best use of the money to put towards an Intel Mac that can support 10.6+ ?(...or a share or two of Apple stock.)
    Please convey your wisdom. Thanks.
P.S. I know the stock is the best use of my money, so just consider the hardware options.

I happened to find this answer while looking for something else.
iMac G5 and iMac G5 (Ambient Light Sensor): Benefit of using matching memory modules (RAM) http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2708
    Condensed version:
Applies only to original iMac G5 and iMac G5 (Ambient Light Sensor).
*If it has matching DIMMS it operates with a 128-bit data path, otherwise it uses a 64-bit data path.* A 128-bit data path allows greater throughput than a 64-bit data path. This allows faster manipulation of large files. With a 128-bit bus, you would see better performance when you have multiple applications open at the same time. Also, some enhanced gaming performance.
According to this, I was getting better performance before I added the 1 GB of RAM, except that degraded performance due to stuffing RAM to the gills has to be weighed against that. Seems like trading up to a full 2 GB would have some unquantified benefits. The only ways to find out are to find another iMac to compare with or to put in the RAM and see what happens.

    Hi
Logic Studio is not available anymore, so unless you can find an "old stock" copy somewhere, you will never be able to upgrade in the future.
Logic Pro 9 has all the content from the Studio box available for download, with the exception of the 20G of Soundtrack Pro content. Soundtrack Pro is no longer available at all.
Logic Studio also contained several other applications: Mainstage, Compressor (available separately from the AppStore), Waveburner (no longer available), plus some other utilities.

  • Upgrade from 4GB RAM to 8GB

    Hi folks,
This is my first post ever, I would like to say hello from Vienna, AUSTRIA
I need you guys to PLEASE help me out!
As my subject already told, i´d LOVE to upgrade my MacBook Pro Late 2010 with 4GB ram up to 8 GB Ram.
    My questions:
    1. What is important (Wich RAM chips do i need)?
    2. Wich one is the best brand/company? Crossair? Samsung? Kingston? etc?
    3. Will I loose my warranty ? If No, 100% sure?
    4. Have a good day and thanks in advance
    Greetings from cold Austria,
    DariBoss

    1. What is important (Wich RAM chips do i need)?
You will need 2 x 4.0GB PC8500 DDR3-1066GHz chips. Here is an excellent example:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/8566DDR3S8GP/
    2. Wich one is the best brand/company? Crossair? Samsung? Kingston? etc?
As long as the specifications match the answer to Q1 the brand does not matter. Most RAM comes with a lifetime guarantee, I would recommend you double check to see the brand you choose has that.
    3. Will I loose my warranty ? If No, 100% sure?
No you won't. The only way you could loose your warranty is to damage your machine when you install it. If you follow the directions in your owners manual and in this video the chances are extremely small you will damage your machine.
    4. Have a good day and thanks in advance
    You too and your welcome!

I have an HP Printer/scanner, and since upgrading to Mountain Lion I can no longer scan on my HP.  HP tells me that I can get an upgrade app from 'Apple Software Upgrade' .  Does anyone know how to do this?

HP couldn't find its own apps with both hands and a flashlight.
As of Lion all scanning functions are incorporated natively in OS X. You can scan three ways:
Use Preview: File > Import from scanner
    Use Image Capture
(Preview and Image Capture are both in your Applications folder.)
System Preferences > Print & Scan. Select your HP and use the Scan tab.
If you have HP's "Image Zone" software installed, you no longer need it and it no longer works anyway.

  • Does it void my warranty to upgrade the hard drive and ram in a MacBook?

Recently a new store in my local mall called Peachmac opened. They do repairs and upgrades. I went there to see about a hard drive and RAM upgrade. They told me if I do it myself, it voids the warranty. I have about 8 months of Apple care left on my Mac and don't want to loose it. My real question is does it void your warranty even though the instruction booklet specifically tells you how to do it? The reason I'm wondering this is because they want $69 an hour plus money for parts. They quoted around $125-$150 (for a 500GB HD and 4GB of RAM). Is this an ok deal? Or should I go for an SSD? I saw Crucial was doing a bundle for a 128GB SSD and 4GB of RAM at my local CompUSA. Which one is a better deal? Thanks!

If you replace the memory, it doesn't void your warranty, but the warranty will be voided if you replace the hard drive

  • Why does compressor settings of aac audio, stereo, create 2 channel mono from 2 discrete audio channel movies?

Why does compressor settings of aac audio, stereo, create 2 channel mono from 2 discrete audio channel movies?

well depending on how your audio is brought into your system you can select it as two streams of mono or a stereo pair. In reality, unless it's mixed in stereo, that's just two streams of mono locked together. Other streams brought in via other means, can have a lot more audio channels, e.g. 8, 16, 24.
In your case, with what you're doing, two separate channels works best, so you can control the levels of two very different audio sources. If, for instance, you were taking the feed from the mixing board during a concert, you might want their stereo out. Otherwise you might be dealing with the 1.2 zillion channels that they're mixing live.
I like separating the tracks coming in. I work with people who prefer to lock them together. Locking means the tracks move together during editing. Ok, fine, but I'm usually dealing with different audio sources, like you are: a camera mic (safety on location) and a close mic (shotgun, lav). Or I have a shotgun source and a lav. I want to determine the best source audio for the shot. Sometimes it's a lav, sometimes a different feed from somewhere else, sometimes the shotgun, and sometimes a mix of two sources. But if they're locked together and pre-set to come out evenly from both speakers there no way for me to make a determination. The other guys like to cut and figure out the audio later.
To each his or her own. . .

Are others having the same problems?

    Try this. Worked for me.
    - turn off your router
    - turn off you Mac's after removing all available printers
    - turn off all iDevices
    - do a factory reset of your printer remove all cables min. 30 sec.
    - turn on your router first
    - ran the network set up wizard
    - give your printer also a new name like "DeskJet 2015"
Something which you don't have used before.
    - turn on your Mac's and add your printer
    - turn on your iDevices at least.
    Should work after these steps.
It worked for me including all iDevices.
