Does Measurement Studio offer much for someone writing a basic control system?

I'm trying to weigh whether the added cost (and bulk) of Measurement Studio would be worth it for me vs simply using the free DAQmx libraries.
My application wouldn't have any need for the custom controls offered by MS nor the advanced libraries. All the application is doing is monitoring a handful of digital and analog inputs, reacting to them, and setting a handful of digital inputs. No high speed measurements, waveforms, etc. Probably the highest priority I/O may get updated every 50-100 ms.
I'm mainly wondering if MS offers anything over the DAQmx libraries when it comes to working with I/O asynchronously (which seems like the proper way to approach a responsive machine control application).

This an interesting question and I don't have a great answer.  I hope someone comes along and explains the issue clearly.
I like having all of Measurement Studio because I depend on Visa for the instrument libraries (scopes, meters, power supplies etc.).  I don't want to write an entire communication library from scratch.
For just basic IO though I'm not sure what Measurement Studio actually brings to the table.  Since I've always had the entire package (Measurement Studio Enterprise Edition I believe) I don't know which features are available outside of Measurement Studio.
Did you mention that you are working with NI hardware?  If not, then maybe Measurement Studio buys you even less.  When working with NI hardware NI MAX (Measurement and Automation eXplorer) makes it so simple.  Just plug in a USB device and give it an alias in MAX like TS_Light and you can talk to it with :
using (var t = new Task())
         Thread.Sleep(10);
        // Create full device name based on fixture platform passed into constructor
         const string strDevice = "TS_Light/port0";
        // Setup Task
        t.DOChannels.CreateChannel(
                 strDevice,
                  ChannelLineGrouping.OneChannelForAllLines);
         // Create a write stream and send out the desired Value
        var writer = new DigitalSingleChannelWriter(t.Stream);
        // Convert port value to bool array
         var boolArray = new bool[8];
        for (int i = 0; i < 8; i++)
                  boolArray[i] = Convert.ToBoolean((portValue >> i) & 0x01);
        t.Start();
         writer.WriteSingleSampleMultiLine(false, boolArray);
It looks a little complicated but it is the same flow for all NiDaqMx Tasks.
Again, I realize that I'm not answering your direct question of what does MS really bring to you when you are doing such a simple IO project.  I wonder however if you will ever be doing a similar project again soon?  And then maybe you will want to add some support for instrument automation and data collection? When you look at doing multiple projects, even simple ones, the cost of Measurement Studio starts to look like a better investment in my opinion.
Good luck with your project!

  • Does Measurment Studio Standerd edition contains graph and chart ActiveX controls for VB6

    A Very Simple quistion:
    Does Measurment Studio Standerd edition contains graph and chart ActiveX controls for VB6?

    Shady -
    Measurement Studio 7.0 Standard Edition provides support for Visual C++ 2003, Visual Basic .NET 2003, and Visual C# 2003. It just so happens that the Visual C++ support includes ActiveX controls, which are usable in VB6. The CWGraph ActiveX control provides both graphing and charting functionality.
    However, full Visual Basic 6 support, including examples and documentation is not in the Standard edition. It is in the Professional and Enterprise Editions.
    The best thing to do would be for us to get in direct contact with each other to make sure that we get you exactly the (minimum) package you need. If your profile includes your email address, we can contact you. Otherwise, you'll need to go through ni.com/support and refer to t

  • NI Measurement Studio UI components for Visual Basic 6.0 message box

    Hey All,
    North West Quality Analyst was recently installed on my LabVIEW development machine. Whenever I launch NWQA I get a dialog box to install "NI Measurement Studio UI Components for Visual Basic 6.0" for program called "Program Name."
    I cancel out of the install and I can use NWQA just fine. However, I would like to eliminate the install attempt. Any ideas on how to do that?
    I've tried to find the installer file on the Distribution discs, but on the two that I thought it would be on, "Measurement Studio Enterprise Support for Visual Studio 6.0" and "Measurement Studio Enterprise Edition" the file named "MStudioUIDemo.msi" was not found.

  • Why does Verizon charge so much for deposits when other carriers don't?

    I used to be with Tmobile. No deposit. Recently I thought about going with US Cellular, they checked my credit and said it would be $25 per line. I also checked out AT&T who was willing to give me service with no deposit. I also checked with Sprint, who was willing to give me service with no deposit. When I checked how much Verizon would charge, it came to $1,200!!! Why the huge difference? This sucks because I really like Verizon's phone line-up.

    Every company is going to have different criteria for their deposits, which you can clearly see in the results of your investigation.  I don't think Verizon publishes the exact standards that they use.  I imagine that all of the usual credit reporting factors (on-time payments, limited use of available credit, lack of collections accounts and judgments) as well as any previous history with Verizon or any of the companies they have acquired, would be the major factors.
    You can certainly call Verizon and see if you can speak to someone who can explain the decision to you.  They may at least tell you what credit report they pulled, so you can check it and make sure there is no incorrect information.  You can have wildly different information on file with each of the three bureaus if there are errors in your files.

  • Doing an internal Mac adjustment for reading/writing to NTFS HD

    I am doing an internal setup using Terminal to allow my MacBook Pro 13(late 2012) OS X 10.8 to be able to read/write from a Seagate Backup Plus external HD that is formatted in NTFS.  I have seen the instructions given from this site: http://www.avioc.com/blog/ntfs-read-write-support-on-mountain-lion
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Here is what you should do:
    Uninstall other 3rd-party NTFS software, like Paragon, Tuxera or NTFS-3G.
    Edit /etc/fstab (you can do this with "sudo nano /etc/fstab"
    Add the following line:
    LABEL="VOLUME_NAME_WITHOUT_QUOTES" none ntfs rw,auto,nobrowse
    Quit your editor (if you used nano, you can do this with Control-X, Y)
    Reboot, or if you prefer just unmount and re-mount the partition using Disk Utility
    Voila! You have read-write support for this partition in OSX
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    I can access the Terminal function and can enter the written text shown...however, I am not sure which 'Volume' they are asking for when it says "VOLUME_NAME_WITHOUT_QUOTES" ...is it the Mac HD or the Seagate external HD..and do I also include the _ in the written text line ?
    Then when the GNU nano 2.0.6   File: /etc/fstab   window comes up and I enter: LABEL="VOLUME_NAME_WITHOUT_QUOTES" none ntfs rw,auto,nobrowse
    in this box, I can't quit the editor as it shows:
    Quit your editor (if you used nano, you can do this with Control-X, Y)                                                                                                                           so I am unable to reboot to finish the process.
    How do I do that quitting to be able to reboot and finish?
    And finally...do I have the Seagate external HD attached while doing this change ?
    Thanks,

    Did you check for updates from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=1&platform=Macintosh? You can download updates to Acrobat there. You should generally install the updates in order unless indicated otherwise.
    However, it may be that what is being sent to Distiller is the problem, not Distiller itself. What is the error message? How are you creating the input for Distiller? I am not quite sure about the steps on a MAC since I use a PC, but at least these questions should help track down the problem. If you can post the full text of the error (or a screen shot), it would help.

    Hi Tsuyoshi;
    1) FYI: OLE-DB and ODBC are examples of "middle-ware" and are not a direct connection to any DBMS vendor!
    2) The true native client connection to SS is SNC (SQLServer Native Client). That connection mechanism is supported in PB.
    Note: You could also use JDBC or ADO.Net as well from PB. Personally, I always use SNC for the best performance and supported DML functionality.

  • Using graphs in measurement studio

    I have written in multiple languages, and this easy user friendly software package has left me completely stumped. How on earth do you put data in to a graph and display it????? Can someone please show me code examples of firstly how to shove an entire array of numbers into a graph in VB.net using the new Measurement Studio and secondly how I could update a graph plot with a next acquired sample. Please help

    "Where would I find "Creating Measurement Studio Strip Charts, Scope Charts, and Graphs" document. if it is on the website it is extremeley well hidden even from its own search engine. Does this specifically talk about VB .NET and measurement studio"
    You can find this topic, as well as several other conceptual topics about the Measurement Studio .NET features with VB.NET/C#, in the Measurement Studio help that installs with Measurement Studio. You can find this help in two ways:
    Integrated into VS.ET 2003/MSDN Help - Go to the table of contents, then the "NI Measurement Studio Help" node.
    Measurement Studio standalone help - Go to the Start Menu, then Programs->National Instruments->Measurement Studio 7.1 for VS.NET 2003->Measurement Studio Documentation
    Once you're in the table of contents, you can find the topic above by navigating to:
    - NI Measurement Studio Help
    - NI Measurement Studio .NET Class Library
    - Using the Measurement Studio .NET Class Libraries
    - Using the Measurement Studio Windows Forms .NET Controls
    - Using the Measurement Studio Graph .NET Controls
    The topic above is the second link in the list. If you have Measurement Studio 7.1 installed, this link will take you directly there.
    "Using Measurement Studio ActiveX controls I wouldn't even know where to start, there is no AxCWGraph on any toolbar."
    AxCWGraph is the name of the interop wrapper that is automatically generated by VS.NET when you add CWGraph to your project, so you won't see it in the toolbox. WaveformGraph/ScatterGraph is what you should use in .NET applications if you have Measurement Studio 7.0 or higher. I only mentioned CWGraph because this was posted to the Measurement Studio for Visual Basic forum instead of the Measurement Studio for Visual Studio .NET forum, so it wasn't clear if you were using the Measurement Studio .NET controls or the Measurement Studio ActiveX controls.
    "If NI could just stick an example of exactly how to use VB.NET with measurement studio on displaying data and the various options available and stick it for all to see on the measurement studio home page it would be great."
    There are several examples that are installed with Measurement Studio 7.1. If you installed Measurement Studio to the default location, you can find this examples at:
    Program Files
    National Instruments
    MeasurementStudioVS2003
    DotNET
    Examples
    UI
    Graph
    "I write in over ten different languages and scripts and fluent in two of them. It worries me that I can't even find the front door let alone open it."
    I can understand how this could difficult if you were not aware of the Measurement Studio help and examples. Is it easier now that you know about this content that installed with Measurement Studio? If not, what else do you feel is missing?

  • Using Measurement Studio with Silverlight

    Hi,
    Does the newest Measurement Studio support usage in a Silverlight project? It does not in my version (2009).

    Hi Willy,
    Thanks for your answer, I was trying to embed a NIDaq application in a webpage, so I was exploring all the options, I found thooses:
    -Develop an XBAP application (does not seem to be compatible with more than IE and Firefox(with some actions) under Windows, plus I haven't found the way of making it work with NIDaq)
    -Develop an ASP.NET application (maybe it is because I don't have much knowledge of it, but it does not seem to fit my needs as I am activating DAQ Digital Output when mouseenter and mouseleave on a led events are fired(which I manage on client side with javascript), and asp.net refresh the whole page each time, I would need it to refresh the control only).
    Do you have any suggestions on how to make a measurement studio daq application embeded in a webpage to control an NIUSB6501 board connected to the server?
    Thanks,
    Best Regards,

  • Application distribution Measurement studio

    We have now developed a software application using Measurement Studio and VC++ for "capturing" live communication data from line as step 1 of the application and "analysing data" separately as step 2. We can do the 2 steps without any problem on a data acquisition machine. However, when we run the same application on a desktop PC (not a digitizer or not connected to digitizer) we expect the application to RUN only step 2. The question here is then, in order to set application up on a desktop PC (not a digitizer or not connected to digitizer) what changes I should do (in terms of un-tying NI scope acquisition functions)?
    NI Software : Measurement Studio for Visual C++ version 7.0
    NI Hardware : High-Speed Digitizers (Scopes) device PXI-5122
    Driver Version : NI Scope 2.6
    OS : Windows XP

    THanks for response.
    >>> Aha, I didnt realize that you were using the C++ scope classes. The scope driver does not >>> get loaded until the very first call to the scope class. So you would not need to setup >>> delay loading nor would you use LoadLibrary or GetProcAddress.
    Our application was developed using MFC VC++ 2003 .NET edition. Sorry I missed the details.
    >>> You will get an exception when you use the CNiScope constructor and if the system does >>> not have the scope driver installed.
    Exactly, I do get an exception when I use the CNiScope constructor. However, what I do is create CNiScope 2 times. The first time a dummy construction is done with function like this...
    bool CMainFrame:copeExists(void)
    bool scopeExists = true;
    CString errorMsg = "NiScope device absent.\r\nNo Scope controls will be available";
    try
    // Instantiate a scope to test is it exists
    CNiScope ProbeScope ("PXI1Slot2", false, false, "");
    catch (CNiIviException* e)
    e->Delete();
    AfxMessageBox (errorMsg, MB_OK | MB_ICONEXCLAMATION);
    scopeExists = false;
    return scopeExists;
    I use the returned boolean to identify if scope driver is PRESENT or ABSENT in the system. Using this boolean result I then do the actual scope dialog bar and CNiScope construction (the second time is when the actual CNiScope is created and used).
    If boolean is FALSE
    no scope dialog bar controls is created
    only the analyses dialog bar controls are created
    else
    application starts up with scope and analyses dialog controls
    >>> Are you using the .NET class libraries? Or is this just MFC code?
    Just MFC code with Measurement Studio
    >>> For a list of components that need to be distributed, refer to the Measurement Studio Help topic Distributing Measurement Studio Visual C++ Applications.
    This was helpful to the extent that I got the active X controls loaded and distributed with application. But analyses part of application crashes when it tries to use the CNi such as CNiMatrices, CNiReal64Vector. I found this using the debugged in Microsoft's VC++ .NET 2003.
    >>> Are you checking for exceptions when you start the analysis routines?
    I do have a few exceptions being checked. However, can you tell the exceptions you have in mind that need to be included.
    >>> Is this crash happening on the development machine or the deployment machine?
    The crash is happening only on machines NOT having scope drivers. I tried on a 2 machines.
    One WITH Measurement Studio and WITHOUT scope controls - it crashes
    Second WITHOUT Measurement Studio and WITHOUT scope controls - it crashes
    Is there something I am missing??
    >>> Could you provide more information about the crash, perhaps a code snippet or a sample app ( with only the analysis section).
    Here is code snippet....
    m_digIntpolRowLength and m_digIntpolCoeffRows are unsigned int types.
    m_farrowFilterCoeff is CNiReal64Matrix type. This is the first moment in application when a CNi is used. When the matrix elements are loaded with values, it crashes at the line
    m_farrowFilterCoeff(0,0)=0.00252;.....
    I know this may or may not give you whole lot of information. If we can go offline from discussion forum (becuase of proprietary information), I can provide more details about application etc. Thanks.

    m_digIntpolRowLength = c_digIntpolRowLengthLarge;
    m_digIntpolCoeffRows = c_digIntpolCoeffRowsLarge;
    m_farrowFilterCoeff.SetSize(m_digIntpolCoeffRows, m_digIntpolRowLength);
    m_delayLineBuffer.SetSize(c_delayLineBufferSize);
    m_delayLineSize = m_digIntpolRowLength;
    m_delayLinePtr = &m_delayLineBuffer[c_delayLineBufferSize - m_delayLineSize];
    /////Row 0//////
    m_farrowFilterCoeff(0,0)=0.00252;
    m_farrowFilterCoeff(0,1)=-0.0087823;

  • Converting a Labview time into a string with Measurement Studio C++

    In my Measurement Studio-based C++ application, I'll be sent a Labview
    time in the format of a double, which I believe is seconds since 1904.
    Does Measurement Studio for Visual C++ contain a function that will
    convert that time value into a string format? I'd like to end up with
    something like "hh:mm:ss:msec". I'm basically looking for the
    equivalent of the Labview vi, "Format Time/Date String". If Measurement
    Studio doesn't provide this, is there some other (hopefully simple) way
    to do this?
    I can request that the Labview application send me time in a string
    format as well as a double; this will require several changes to the
    Labview application sending the timestamp, but if that is a simpler
    solution that's the option we'll take.
    Thanks in advance,
    Adam

    Measurement Studio does not have a function for this, but you can do
    this yourself by first converting from LV epoch (1/1/1904) to Unix
    epoch(1/1/1970) and then using c runtime time functions
    UNIXEpochOffset is the difference between the 2 epochs at GMT. To
    convert to a UNIX system clock value, just subtract the sum of this
    number and your time zone offset in seconds
    lvTime is the value returned by LV timestamp
    #define  UNIXEpochOffset 2082844800
    int _tmain(int argc, _TCHAR* argv[])
        __int64 lvTime = 3214396284; //10:48:13.173 AM 11/9/2005
        //GMT offset for Central Time is -6 (3600 seconds). You will need to account for daylight savings time.
        int offset = -3600;
        time_t unixTime = lvTime - UNIXEpochOffset - offset;
        struct tm *newtime = localtime(&unixTime);
        printf(asctime( newtime )); //prints out the time in a string format.
        return 0;

    Hello,
    It sounds like your question is really if you can access the parallel port from your Measurement Studio Environment. The answer is yes, and one way to do this is using NI-VISA. In general, I imagine you will be performing viOpen, viRead, and viClose operations on your parallel port. The following discussion forum links should help you get more well rounded on the idea: (note: many of these forum posts have helpful links as well!)

    I did not mention this before, but the disks, Measurement Studio Professional Edition for Windows XP, Visual Studio.net and the Device Driver Reference CD installed fine. The Measurement Studio Professional Support for VIsual Studio 6.0 did not install properly. Do I even need to install this disk if I am running Visual Studio.net?

    Hello EE
    If you are using Visual Studio .NET 2003 with Measurement Studio, you do not need to install the support for Visual Studio 6 CD. You would only need to install this CD if you are planning to use VB 6.0 and VC++ 6.0
    Hope this helps
