Does the Spectral Measurement Toolkit Support the 5644 VST?

I'm currently in process of migrating from a PXI-5660 to PXIe-5644 in .NET.  The current measurement process is as follows:
ConfigureSpectrumForRFSA
CalculateCorrectionForRFSA
NiScope.Read
niSMT.ZoomFFT
niSMT.AveragedPowerSpectrum
niSMT.ApplyCorrection
niSMT.SpectrumUnitConversion
niSMT.SpectrumPeakSearch
I've been mainly able to reproduce this flow with the following:
niSMT.ConfigZoomFFT
niRFSA.ReadPowerSpectrum
niSMT.ZoomFFT
niSMT.AveragedPowerSpectrum
niSMT.SpectrumUnitConversion
niSMT.SpectrumPeakSearch
Of course, when I say reproduce, I really only mean I can call the above methods without getting an exception or error.  It does not mean I return any usable measurement.  I've studied the SMT programming flow, routed the data as best as I can muster, and have gone back to the working 5660 SMT usage for verification, and nothing.
I then look to LabVIEW examples for the SMT, and here I notice that none of the SMT examples say they support any VST.  I look at SMT documentation for supported hardware and again, I don't find a reference to the 5644.  I find a forum response about when to use niSMT/niModT or RFmx and for the VST, the SMT isn't mentioned for any application.
So, am I mistaken to think that I can use the SMT for the VST?  I've already concluded that I can't use niScope as was used in the 5660 application.  I've only begun to start looking at RFmx, but I figured before I spend a lot of time switching gears for something else, I should post my question to the community.  Is RFmx the direction I should be taking or does my problem with SMT have nothing to with adequate hardware support?
Please advise.
Michael Kral

Hi Michael,
There are several factors at play here, the first being the SMT itself, then the second being the transition from the 5660 to the VST.  You may have figured out a large part of I'll detail below, but having it spelled out might help bring organization to those thoughts.
The Spectral Measurements Toolkit is a set of software that can help generate waveforms and analyze them.  The SMT is independent of any hardware, I've seen users with SMT/LabVIEW and a 3rd party RF instrument.  With the VST, you should still be able to use all of the SMT functions once you've gathered the data from the VST.  The Zoom FFT, AveragedPowerSpectrum, etc. will all function with the VST.  I have seen a good portion of customers using the VST with the SMT.
On the other hand, the transition from the 5660 to the VST is an interesting and less common issue (5660 is older, VST is much newer).  The 5660 is built on top of an older scope that ran a version of NI-SCOPE based on Traditional DAQ, while our newer scopes run on a version of NI-SCOPE based on DAQmx.  To add more to the complexity of your situation, the VST's internal digitization process does not use NI-SCOPE at all.  Because of this, the functions used with the 5660 (NiScope.Read) don't make sense with the VST and will not be usable.  Instead, you will need to use the RFSA functions as it seems you've already determined.
With these factors at play, it makes sense that you were searching for a different example that showed how to use the VST with RFSA/SMT.  The SMT examples in LabVIEW don't explicitly call out the VST as being compatible, but all of the examples will work correctly since they use RFSA and SMT only.  For LabVIEW, I usually start with SMT IQ Spectrum for niRFSA if I just want a spectrum/FFT.  Your programming flow looks pretty similar to what is in the Spectrum example, I think you're on the right track.  As a last note, RFmx is great option if you're interested in making the complete switch.  I'm assuming that this is the link you found about MT/SMT vs. RFmx; if not, it's worth a read.  You should be able to use either one, it's whatever you feel more comfortable with.
To summarize the above and to directly answer your question: the VST should be usable with both MT/SMT and RFmx.  You mention that you aren't able to return any usable measurement, can you give us more info about the data that you are receiving?
Thanks,
David B.

I wanted to follow this tutorial with the USRP 2932, which will arrive soon, but I later found out that I don't seem to have any of the LabVIEW Communications. Will not having those prevent me from using the USRP radio? If not, then are there any restrictions on what I can do with the radio without Communications?

    Hi BreadLB,
The link to the tutorial that you posted is based on LabVIEW Communications System Design Suite, a new software environment designed to accelerate algorithm prototyping and over the air testing.  It is a completely separate and independent environment from LabVIEW.  See my post here for more details.  You can also download a free 30 day evaluation copy here.  Your hardware is supported with both LabVIEW and LabVIEW Communications.
The NI 2932 is a network based USRP, and it has a small onboard FPGA.  Because of that, the FPGA on that specific product is not a LabVIEW FPGA target.  The NI 294x/5x family has a large Kintex 7 FPGA and can be programmed using LabVIEW FPGA or LabVIEW Communications, like in the tutorial that you posted.  The NI 2932 can be used with your host PC and LabVIEW for a wide variety of applications.  Unfortunately the tutorial that you linked in your post requires the NI 294x/5x hardware and LabVIEW Communications.  If you have questions about a specific application for your 2932, please post more details and we would be happy to help.

  • How to install Spectral Measurements and Modulation Toolkits for multiple versions of Labview

I installed NI-RFSG, NI-RFSA, the Spectral Measurements Toolkit, and the Modulation Toolkit.  I have both LabVIEW 7.1 and 8.0 installed on my system.  I developed an application in LV 8.0 and now I need to revert it to LV 7.1.  The problem I am having is that add-on toolkits seem to only have been installed for LV 8.0 because there are several missing VIs and controls when I try to open the LV 7.1 version.  I tried re-installing the toolkits, but this is not fixing the problem.  How can I get the installer to install the toolkits for both versions of LabVIEW?
    Thanks for your help,
    Cherie
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello Cherie,
it's a know issue. You can read it in the modulation toolkit readme :
    Two Versions of LabVIEW Installed
The installer supports installation of the Modulation Toolkit into a single
version of LabVIEW; installation of the Toolkit into multiple separate
installations of LabVIEW (for instance LabVIEW 7.0 and LabVIEW 7.1 installed
on the same PC and in separate directories) is not supported or recommended.
An unsupported means of doing so though involves manually copying files from
one LabVIEW installation to another. To do so, you can install the
Modulation Toolkit to the home directory of one LabVIEW installation, and
then manually copy the installed files to the other LabVIEW installation.
The following list includes pertinent directories and files. Copy all files
from these directories, including any subdirectories, using the equivalent
relative paths to the LabVIEW home directory for the target.
    <LabVIEW Home>\vi.lib\AddOns\Modulation\*.*
    <LabVIEW Home>\vi.lib\AddOns\NISML\*.*
    <LabVIEW Home>\examples\Modulation\*.*
    <LabVIEW Home>\resource\objmgr\NIMTAttribs.rc
    <LabVIEW Home>\resource\objmgr\NIMTAttribs.rch
    <LabVIEW Home>\help\lvmod.txt
    <LabVIEW Home>\help\lvmod.chm
    <LabVIEW Home>\help\lvdmt.txt
    <LabVIEW Home>\help\lvdmt.chm
Note that this listing does not include all installed files. Also, copying
files in this manner is not equivalent to a full installation into the
alternative version of LabVIEW. Most notably error text unique to the
Modulation Toolkit will not be updated and the Example Finder listings will
not show the Modulation Toolkit examples.

  • Spectral Measurements Toolset

I have just upgraded my PC to Labview and Teststand 2009. I also updated the Modulation Toolkit and the Spectral Measurement Toolkit. But alas, I have found that when updating from Labview 8.2, the files I expect to appear in the folder ...\vi.lib\addons\Spectral Measurements Toolset are not there, or the folder for that matter.
We have installed this on a clean machine and everything is fine, but on a machine with Labview 8.2 already installed everything is not.
I am a bit loth to uninstall everything and start again, but the worry I have is, if this is not installed properly, what else got missed.
Any feedback on how to clean this up would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Mike,
I've been through the same steps as yourself, i.e. installed the Spectral Measurement Toolkit without LV 2009, installed 2009 and the toolkit didn't appear in 2009 as I expected. I then reinstalled the Spectral Measurement Toolkit and it appeared in 2009. Are you sure you are selecting the correct option when installing? By this I mean when installing you are given the option to install for different versions, are you telling it to install the "NI-LabVIEW (latest verison) Support"? I've included a screenshot to show the screen where this option is available.
This should allow you to use the toolkit in LV2009. This option is a more reliable one than your current method and I recommend trying this to ensure it has installed properly.
The Modulation toolkit should have the same option screen so chose the same option as mentioned above.
If you try this out let me know how you get on, if you have any problems with it then I'll be more than happy to help.

  • Setting video bandwidth spectral measurement

Hello, I am a german intern (please do not look on my grammar!) in a US company and my last weeks consisted of playing with arrays, clusters and tab controls to set up a new design for a control panel in LabVIEW. So, I am a real beginner in using LabVIEW.
My next task is to build an individual spectrum analyzer with different functions. Our Hardware: NI 5600 Downconverter, 5620 Digitizer, 5610 Upconverter, 5421 AWG. Software: LabVIEW Full 7.1, Spectral Measurement Toolkit....
I was really impressed to find this great amount of examples for perfoming spectral measurements. And I think I will try to mix a few examples and make later a few changings to get my own analyzer.
My question concerns the following: is it possible to set the sweep time and video bandwidth like with an ordinary spectrum analyzer.
Do I have to create a special vi or is there an earsier way for such individual settings.
Thank you very much for all answers.
    Norbert

I'm not sure that what you are looking for is valid. In the standard "traditional" spectrum analyzer a narrow bandwidth variable frequency filter is swept across the band of interest, but when you are doing it digitally you basically are getting everything and then using an FFT to resolve, from the complex waveform received, the components that make up that waveform. Usually the only filtering is to limit the maximum frequency to below 1/2 of your sampling frequency to prevent aliasing (Nyquist theorem) Similarly, I'm not sure what in the FFT realm cooresponds to "video bandwidth" on your Agilent or Rhode & Schwarz Spectrum Analyzer. The width of your FFT's bins, which might be coorespondent, is related to the sample rate/sec and the total number of samples (which needs to be a power of 2), i.e. sampling at 11025 samples/sec, analyzing a sample set containing 8196 produces 11025/8196 = 1.35Hz wide bins. Now cooresponding with the sweep time on a SpecA the time needed to collect those samples would be #S* period, or #S*(1/fS) = 8196*(1/11025)= 0.743Sec. The more samples (higher resolution, narrow bin widths) the longer "the sweep".

  • Does the Report Generation Toolkit support Office 2007?

With the hot-out-of-the-oven Office 2007, Microsoft has done a complete overhaul of the Office environment that we all have spent many years learning to perfection (well.. almost). Lucky those who got a head start as part of the Office Beta program.
Well, NI claims that the current version of the LabVIEW Report Generation Toolkit supports "Microsoft Office 2000 (Word, Excel, and Graph) or later" and therefore literally also the new Office 2007.
I doubt that the ActiveX API has remained unchanged when developing Office 2007, so let's use this thread to uncover the experience you have with calling Office 2007 applications using the LabVIEW Report Generation Toolkit.
    Anyone???
    - Philip Courtois, Thinkbot Solutions

We are currently working on a maintenance release for the Report Generation Toolkit to support Office 2007.  You can install the current toolkit with Office 2007, but you will have some problems.  If you copy the four LLBs from the Compatibility\Office 2003\vi.lib\addons\_office folder on your Report Generation Toolkit CD to the corresponding vi.lib\addons\_office location in your LabVIEW folder after installing the toolkit, things will work for the most part.  But you won't have 100% compatibility until the maintenance release is done.

  • How does the window selected on the spectral measurements express vi affect the output?

I'm using the spectral measurements express vi to find the power spectral density of a fairly broadband signal. I've already discovered a bug in the express vi; it doesn't divide the power spectrum by the equivalent noise bandwith for the window as it should. However, even after taking this into account by using the scaled time window vi to divide this factor out, the PSD is still changing with the window. How can I get the PSD to be constant with varying windows??

I would like you to prove the "bug" that you're describing by creating an example that shows the calculated and the expected results. By opening the code of the "Spectral Measurements" Express VI you can dig into the heart of the calculation, and there (in the "ma_FFT Power Spectrum and PS Density no State.vi") you will see that the Power Spectral Density indeed IS calculated by using the formula PSD = (Power Spectrum/(df*Noise Power BW of Window)). See the attached PSD.jpg that shows where the calculation happens.
The Power Spectral Density is supposed to be dependant of the chosen Window. Please read chapter 5 "Smoothing Windows" in the "La
    bVIEW Analysis Consepts" manual.

  • Does the Mac Pro Support SATA III?

Hi everyone, I've been wondering for a long time: Does the late 2012 12-Core Mac Pro support SATA III 6Gb connection? If not, is there any way of making it SATA III?

Most commercially-available rotating drives cannot possibly source data off the platters at higher than a momentary bursts of up to 125MBytes/sec, or about 1.0Gbits/sec. That means SATA-I speed is not a bottleneck.
A few drives are faster, and some SSD drives are faster.
Many drives available today are capable of transfers at up to 6Gbits/sec.They will operate correctly at the Mac Pro's 3Gbits sec Bus speed. But since they cannot produce data from the drive platters at those speeds, you get at most a tiny, momentary burst at that speed.
6Gbits/sec is far higher than other bottlenecks in the drive. There is no point in paying extra for this spec, as the drive cannot achieve it steady-state, and it provides no measurable advantage. I refer to such practices as "specsmanship". Feel free to read "cr@p".

  • Does the iPhone 5 support Sprint's 4G Wimaxx?

this is the answer i got from an Apple Support representative before he disappeared without saying anything:
    Now Chatting with Kaeleb
Hi, welcome to the US Apple Online Store.  How are you?
does the iphone 5 work on sprints 4g wimaxx and 4g lte?
Yes it sure does, the iPhone is designed to run Sprints network wherever you have it available.
i was told by a sprint representative that the iphone 5 is only capable of supporting their 3G or 4G LTE and doesn't supoort their 4G wimaxx
    Then that information is correct
Our iPhone is designed to run whatever network the carrier allows for, if they have features not offered specifically they would be the ones with that information. The network information comes from the carrier.
yes but is the phone capable of it? it either has the antenna to connect to it or not
All iPhones have antennas to connect to a cellular network, the type of network it connects to is determined by the service provider, in your case Sprint.
I haven't heard from you for a few moments. Would you like to continue chatting?
your not giving me useful answers
I am giving you accurate information
Wether its useful or not, the information your looking for comes from Sprint.
there are specific antennas and frequencies that must be used depending on what you're trying to connect to
And since you have already discussed this with them, I have no idea why you are here asking us about something Sprint has already clarified for you.
your the company that designs and manufactures thephone
Your not getting it. As you said, we make the phone.
    With an Antenna
The type of network* is determined by the service provider.
because prior to ever speaking with sprint one of your apple representatives gave me information contradicting that
4G, 4GLTE etc, all made up by the carriers to determine their networks.
what im asking is: is the iphone 5 made to be compatible with 4g wimaxx
whether or not sprint allows it to be
I get what your asking but your not quite understanding the answer. The iPhone is made compatible to connect to cellular network. Apple does not have information regarding which network types it will connect to, its designed to work on a GSM or CDMA network, the network strength which is 4G etc, is determined by the carrier. Here at Apple we have nothing to do with that.
We don't make iPhones designed specifically for 4G, 4G LTE, 4g wimaxx or any other network. Its made to run on a GSM or CDMA type network.
you manufacture 3 different iPhone that have specific antennas radio frquencies based on which carrier its going to be activated on
From the your carrier determines the compatibility.
    Thats not true
We manufacture 2 types as I told you
    GSM and CDMA
Sprint and Verizon are both CDMA
a verizon iphone cant be used on sprints network and vice versa because the use different frequencies
    both cdma but different
like the differnence between wimaxx and lte
Not true, its because the phones are locked to the carriers services. It has nothing to do with Antennas, I am not sure where you are getting your information but if you can show me on our website where it says anything about 3 different Antennas then I would understand where you are coming from.
Let me get you the number to our technical support team so that we can find a resolution to this issue. 800-APL-CARE(800-275-2273)

Ok great, do you have any online sales questions I can answer for you?
they weren't able to give me an answer and aid to look online
I find that hard to believe, this team knows for a fact and are the experts they would never direct anyone to go online for that information. You may have spoke with customer service. You need to call technical support from the number I just have you.
    well they did

This is a final warning to stop this type of response. If this conversation is not kept on a professional level, this chat will end.
    thats from your site
you asked me to show you thats what i did
You can call technical support but I need to assist customers with their purchases today.
i have been nothing but professional
    i am a customer
i own a macbook air and mac mini
as well as 4th gen ipod touch and an old iphone 3gs
Great, this is a sales chat.
and this is how youre going to treat me?
I have helped you to the best of my ability, your in the wrong department
All I am doing is getting you to the correct team, because obviously you have not been given the information your looking for.
well you helped me as much as your so called technical support that youre trying to refer me to. even though i already stated they werent able to help me
I guarantee you didn't speak with the technical support team. There is no way they would send a customer online to seek that information, they are well aware that the online store chat is for online sales assistance. I am not going to continue to argue with you. This chat is not going anywhere with this back and forth. If you want assistance you will call our technical support team.
    800-APL-CARE (800-275-2273)
thats who i spoke to at 10:03
put me on hold several times and said he was unsure and for me to look online
    in your chat community
Then I would suggest calling back because for whatever reason the agent you spoke with the last time must not have been an Apple trained technicians, as they get this question plenty and know the answer.
Thank you for choosing the Apple Store. If you have any additional questions, please chat us again.
You are currently not in a chat

All the information you need is right here: http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html
Notice there is no mention of WiMax.
It doesn't really matter anyway as Sprint is rolling their WiMax network down for use by MVNOs. Actual Sprint customers will not have access to WiMax at all. It was a failed experiment.

  • Does the 6600GT-VTD128 support video capture?

    Hi,
I recently purchased an MSI 6600GT-VTD128 video card.  The product information seems to suggest that the card has video input capabilities, and there is an adapter that plugs into the card that has a number of connections, one of which is labeled S-Video in.  However, I haven't been able to get any video capture to work.
Does the card actually support this functionality?  If not, what are the video input connections for?  If so, is there some documentation as to how to set it up?
So far, I tried installing the video capture drivers that come with the card.  I checked the manual.  I checked the MSI web site FAQs.  And I searched the forums.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Daniel

Thanks Richard.  Yes I do have a breakout cable like that.  Actually, I described it in my original message.  So, I am guessing from your message that you believe that the card should have the capability to capture video.
In my original message, I asked if there was any documentation on setting up the card for video capture.  The manual does not describe the procedure, nor does the MSI web site.
There are drivers on the CD that claim to be for video capture, but they had no effect when I installed them.  In fact, there appears to be no way to tell whether the drivers were actually installed successfully.
If anyone out there has successfully used this card for video capture, please let me know.

  • Hi,,does the new 2011 imac 27 inch U.S version  support any pal signal inputs as video or hdmi through the video recorder device or kanex xd ?

    Hello,,
    I have 1 question please,,,
does the new 2011 imac 27 inch from USA support or lay any PAL signal ??
    as for example
I have a friend who lives in the middle east &  has kanex xd & he wants to connect it with the imac 27 inch from Satellite receiver  or PS3 though HDMI cable,, but yet the signal is PAL not NTSC in the middle east,, so will the imac 27 inch play the movie from the satellite in full colour or in blue & says cannot play the movie because its not NTCS ?  because this is U.S version  of imac then he might need an convertor?
the same as if he want to record any hdmi or analog  device from his video recorder  device,,but the input is pal,,so will it plays normal in the U.S machine or will he find any trouble ???
so can you pls give me an advice for him
should he buy the imac from the U.S store or the europe store ??
N.b : there is no mac store ONLINE in the middle east espicaly in Gulf, thats why he want to buy the imac from the mac store online,,
    and thank you

  • Does the iPhone 4S support HDMI- OUT via the digital AV adapter?

Does the 4S support HDMI ->OUT via the digital AV adapter or not?  I read that it does (whether it be mirroring, YouTube video playback, movie playback, etc.) but I'm not having any luck.  I recently tried my AV adapter (that I normally use with my iPad 2) but I get nothing.  When I power cycle the phone after connecting the adapter, I get a error stating that the "accessory is not supported by iPhone".  When I go to play a YouTube video, it shows up on the phone's screen for a second and then disappears.  The LCD TV I am connected to never prompts me for the detection of a new HDMI device being connected" either, do I have no clue what's going on.
    Any ideas? Thought?
Any help to solving this riddle once and for all would be appreciated.
    Thanks and Happy New Year!!
    Andy
    P.S. - my 4S is running iOS 5.0.1 and is a Verizon 16gb model.

The model number on the adaptor is A1388. The link is here:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC953ZM/A?fnode=MTc0MjU4NjE
    I have the iPhone 4s, running 5.0.1 (9A405)
I have also experimented with sequence, and I see no particular order needed to make it work. Generally I get it all plugged in and then swipe the iPhone and in a few moments, the screen appears in mirroring mode. Then if I go to Videos I can play my clips with sound, or I can do Keynote presentations, etc.
So sorry to hear you're having trouble. I imagine you've already double-checked that you're seating it solidly in the dock connector and have a good, working HDMI cable. I am not sure what you mean in your original post about "powering up" the phone. It might also be some Verizon issue, though I don't know what that might be. Is your AV adaptor the Apple branded one?

  • THE SIM CARD INSERTED IN THIS IPHONE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE SUPPORTED.....

Hello. I bought on Dec. 17th 2007 at Orange shop in Beausoleil (south France) an iPhone with the option of unlocking the Sim (100 Euro plus). I followed all instructions. Everything was perfect, on Dec. 24th I was able to unlock the iPhone and used with Orange sim, MonacoTelecom sim and Vodafone sim. BUT the iPhone had a problem: when in sleep mode it did't received calls. So Afer 24 hours I stopped to use, UNSAFE. After Christmas holidays I called Apple assistance, they send me UPS and I returned iPhone to Apple (Jan. 4th 2008). I received a NEW iPhone on Jan. 8th 2008, VERY RUSH. Perfect service, I thought (...making terrible error...). The iPhone was LOCKED and I wasn't able to use. Now starts all the problems and for this reason I'm writing.
I called Apple and Orange many times. Orange didn't received the documents from Apple for the changing of IMEI and Serial, for them I had the first iPhone. After many cals finally I asked Apple to send something official for the changing.
    ....Days goes on and on.......
Every day two times I called Orange, but evert time I received different versions of my situation. Everyday I tried to restore the iPhone but still simlocked.
On Jan.15th after a meeting with a lawyer I decided to make pression to Apple: infact I returned them an unlocked iPhone and I received back a locked one.
I finally was able to speak with a "supervisor" (Mr. F...) and he tried to solve the problem.
On Jan. 16th I spoke with another "supervisor" (Mr. J...) and he told me to make another time the restore, because they changed the firmware.
From now I tried to make the restore many times with Orange sim. Everything seems to go well but when I put another sim on iTunes there is a white page with:
"THE SIM CARD INSERTED IN THIS IPHONE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE SUPPORTED. Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please etc etc....".
So the iphone is locked!!! Maybe is country locked, I don't know.
    Incredible, unbelievable.
From Apple they told me to wait someting from US, but until now ..... nothing, I received no news from Apple.
The bad situation is that after more than 30 days after the buy I am not able to use the hardware I bought!
I hope that someone from Apple can read this post (sorry if is so long, but with this details I think that in Apple can understand the problem).
I send in warranty an hardware with certain features that I payed to Apple and I received back it with different features.
    That's not serious.
After many days, next week I think to go by legal means if Apple France is'nt able to solve the issue.
Many thanks if someone from Apple read my post.
Many thanks if someone help me.

But who has to make another unlock? Orange told me that for them is ok and the phone is unlocked. I read on other pages that Apple has a world-database with Imei numbers. So seems Apple can also do the unlock, even for the fact that they returned me a locked phone, different from the one I sent them. The warranty is with Apple, I forgot to warite in my first post that first of all on Janauary I went to Orange shop where I bought the iPhone but they told me for every problem is Apple that has to solve.

Quick question: Does the Report Generation Toolkit (V1.1.3 for LV 8.6) need Microsoft Office installed in order to create Word documents?
I have a need to create reports, preferably in Word format, but the target machine may only have the Word reader installed, not Office.
