Double rows retrieved in a simple select

Hi guys, I got an issue that I'm not able to resolve, maybe because I'm exauxted ( I moved more than 600 million of rows today)...anyway:
create table ff (tote varchar, whe date, period int, added date, cost int)
insert into ff values ('A', '2014-01-08', 1, '2014-01-06', 10),
('A', '2014-01-08', 1, '2014-01-07', 10),
('B', '2014-01-09', 1, '2014-01-06', 30),
('B', '2014-01-08', 1, '2014-01-07', 40)
select tote, whe, period, MAX(added), cost
from ff group by tote, whe, period, cost
Having the code above I retrieve three rows.
A 2014-01-08 1 2014-01-07 10
B 2014-01-08 1 2014-01-07 40
B 2014-01-09 1 2014-01-06 30
That's why the cost is different in the tote B. It shouldn't be but with millions of rows you ran into a lot of these errors. The query above inside a procedure works fine ( Is one of the cte on cascade) but in one per cent of case doesn't works because
retrieve the double rows ( as you can see works for the tote A but not for the tote B).
Do you have any suggestion? I need to retrieve one rows per tote having the last added. I would like to avoid self join by the moment that the performance is slow...
Thanks

create table ff (tote varchar(10), whe date, period int, added date, cost int)
insert into ff values ('A', '2014-01-08', 1, '2014-01-06', 10),
('A', '2014-01-08', 1, '2014-01-07', 10),
('B', '2014-01-09', 1, '2014-01-06', 30),
('B', '2014-01-08', 1, '2014-01-07', 40)
;with mycte as (select tote, whe, period, added , cost, row_number() Over(Partition by tote Order by added DESC) rn
from ff )
Select tote, whe, period, added , cost from mycte WHERE rn=1
drop table ff

  • Simple select query - Row ordering issue

    Hi Guys,
    I want to ask that row chaining and row migration is applicable for Global Temporary Table as well?
    Or is it something related only to Physical DB tables?
    I have requirement as -
    DB Table --> populate GTT_First(process on this) --> Populate GTT_Second.
    I want to insert rows in GTT_Second in particular order.
    So which approach will assure this, or which is better approach?
    To have order by while selecting data from DB Table and inserting in GTT_First OR
    To have order by while inserting data from GTT_First into GTT_Second?
    Will row chaining or row migration play any role here, given that all tables have 85 columns.
    Thanks in advance!

    We face some problem, here we are not using rownum as you have used for demo. We use input date, a date field.some problem? what problem?
    rownum is only used to fill the tables up with some data....
    And each row in our case has 80 columns.so?
    As i couldnt see the reason for this to happen, I could relate this behaviour to some extent with Row chaining and row migration.What problem are you facing, and why do you think it has to do with row chaining or row migration (doesn't make sense to me)
    Here an example with dates

  • Is there an easy way to see how many rows in a table? (selected or unselected)

    Hi all,
    Forgive me if this is a REALLY dumb question but I would love to know if there there is an easy way to to see how many rows there are in a table in InDesign?
    (And I bet I am really going to kick myself when I hear the answer and how simple it probably is..lol !)
    I am working on a huge catalog and am dealing with LOTS of tables...very long tables too at times. I am also doing a lot of copying and pasting back and forth between InDesign and Excel and it would REALLY help if I knew how many rows there are in a table without having to manually count them (TIRESOME!!).
    Also, is there a way to see how many rows I have selected at any one time? It would be SO WONDERFUL if the info box could also provide this information.
    Thank you SO MUCH in advance for your help:))
    Christine
    **UPDATE**
    Oh boy I AM going to kick myself! Why only NOW that I wrote this question did I suddenly notice that the Table palette shows the number of rows and columns? lol.
    Okay, then is there a way to see how many rows I have selected at any given time?

    @Christine – try the following ExtendScript (JavaScript):
    if(app.selection.length === 0
        || !app.selection[0].constructor.name === "Cell"
        || !app.selection[0].constructor.name === "Table"){
        exit(0);
    var sel = app.selection[0];
    if(sel.constructor.name === "Cell"){
        var tableRowLength = sel.parent.rows.everyItem().getElements().length;
    if(sel.constructor.name === "Table"){
        alert("All "+sel.rows.everyItem().getElements().length+" rows selected in current table." );
        exit(0);
    var numberOfRowsSelected = sel.rows.length;
    var indexOfSelectedRows = sel.rows.everyItem().index;
    var startRowSel = indexOfSelectedRows[0]+1;
    var endRowSel = indexOfSelectedRows.length+indexOfSelectedRows[0];
    alert(numberOfRowsSelected +" row(s) selected.\r"+startRowSel+" to "+endRowSel+" out of "+tableRowLength+" of current table.");
    You need not select whole rows, just one or a couple of cells.
    Then run the script.
    An alert message is telling you how many rows belong to the cell range you have selected and:
    which rows of the table are selected…
    A typical message would be:
    6 row(s) selected.
    3 to 8 out of 20 of current table.
    The script does some basic checks of the selection.
    If no cell or table is selected, it will just do nothing…
    Uwe

  • Simple Select on VBPA using index running very slow

    Hello,
    We have a very simple selection on the table VBPA:
    data:
    begin of it_vbeln occurs 100,
      vbeln like vbpa-vbeln,
    end of it_vbeln.
    select vbeln from vbpa
    into table it_vbeln
    where
    kunnr = '##########'
    and parvw = 'AG'.
    All we're trying to accomplish is to find orders for a given customer number and type.
    We have two indices "Z1" and "Z2" which respectively declare: KUNNR, and MANDT, KUNNR, PARVW.
    In looking at a sql trace, it says it's using the VBPA~Z2 index, which is expected, and that its estimated costs are very low on the index:
    SELECT STATEMENT ( Estimated Costs = 71 , Estimated #Rows = 63 )
           2 TABLE ACCESS BY INDEX ROWID VBPA
             ( Estim. Costs = 71 , Estim. #Rows = 63 )
             Estim. CPU-Costs = 553,782 Estim. IO-Costs = 71
               1 INDEX RANGE SCAN VBPA~Z2
                 ( Estim. Costs = 3 , Estim. #Rows = 111 )
                 Search Columns: 3
                 Estim. CPU-Costs = 43,764 Estim. IO-Costs = 3
    Despite declaring that it will do an index range scan, in SM51 it shows as Sequential Read (Table Scan?) and takes a VERY long time to return, about 60 - 120 seconds.
    Since this is needed for a user exit that will be run during order creation, it needs to occur MUCH faster. Our entries in VBPA number above 10 million records currently.
    Can anyone suggest either why the index does not appear to be helping (it takes just as long without the index), or perhaps another method for finding the orders for a given customer number.
    Thank you,
    Randy

    Hi Randy,
    I suggest you skip the attempts to speed up selecting on VBPA, but rather look into using table VAKPA for finding sales documents for a given partner number.
    Greetings

  • Simple select query is taking a lot of time

    hi gems...
    my table has 7267563 rows...and i am doing a simple select * from table;
    but it is taking a lot of time nearly 25minutes but not completed...
    when i did select count(1) from table then it gave the result instantly also select * from table where rownum < 10 is also fine...even when i am selecting all the records using rownum i.e. select * from table where rownum < 7267563 is also giving result instantly...
    but the entire table is not getting result i.e. select * from table...also there is no lock in the table(though i know that select is nothing to do with lock)..
    what may be the issue..please suggest...thanks in advance...

    ORDERING 된 상위 "N" ROWS 만 RETRIEVE 하는 SQL문
    ===============================================
    PURPOSE
    다음은 특정 Column 으로 Ordering 된 상위 "n" rows 만 Return 하기 위한
    간단한 SQL 문을 소개한다.
    Explanation
    Example
    SELECT *
    FROM table A
    WHERE n >= (SELECT COUNT(*)
    FROM table B
    WHERE B.column >= A.column)
    ORDER BY column DESC;
    예) Emp Table 에서 Salary 가 많은 상위 5명만 구하는 SQL 문
    SQL> select empno,ename,sal
    2 from emp A
    3 where 5 >= (select count(*)
    4 from emp B
    5 where B.sal >= A.sal)
    6 order by sal desc
    7 /
    EMPNO ENAME SAL
    7839 KING 5000
    7788 SCOTT 3000
    7902 FORD 3000
    7566 JONES 2975
    7698 BLAKE 2850
    5 rows selected.
    ->Oracle 8i 이상인 경우
    다음과 같이 간단히 query 할수 있다.
    1 select empno,ename,sal
    2 from (select * from emp order by sal desc)
    3* where rownum <= 5;
    위의 예는 상위 "n" Rows 만 정확히 Return 한다. 그러나 중복된
    Column Value 를 가진다면 다음의 예를 고려해 보아야 할 것이다.
    SELECT *
    FROM table A
    WHERE n >= (SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT column)
    FROM column B
    WHERE B.column >= A.column)
    ORDER BY column DESC;
    예)
    SQL> select empno,ename,sal
    2 from emp A
    3 where 5 >= (select count(distinct sal)
    4 from emp B
    5 where B.sal >= A.sal)
    6 order by sal desc
    7 /
    EMPNO ENAME SAL
    7839 KING 5000
    7788 SCOTT 3000
    7902 FORD 3000
    7566 JONES 2975
    7698 BLAKE 2850

  • Fetching more than one row from a table after selecting one value from the dropdown

    Hi Experts,
    How can we fetch more than one row from a table after selecting one value from the dropdown.
    The scenario is that I have some entries in the dropdown like below
      A               B               C
    11256          VID          911256
    11256          VID          811256
    11256          SONY      11256
    The 'B' values are there in the dropdown. I have removed the duplicate entries from the dropdown so now the dropdownlist has only two values.for eg- 'VID' and'SONY'. So now, after selecting 'VID' from the dropdown I should get all the 'C' values. After this the "C' values are to be passed to other methods to fetch some data from other tables.
    Request your help on this.
    Thanks,
    Preeetam Narkhede.

    Hi Preetam!
    I hope I understand your request proberly, since this is more about Java and less about WebDynpro, but if I'm wrong, just follow up on this.
    Supposed you have some collection of your original table data stored in variable "origin". Populate a Hashtable using the values from column "B" (let's assume it's Strings) as keys and an ArrayList of whatever "C" is (let's assume String instances, too) as value (there's a lot of ways to iterate over whatever your datasource is, and since we do not know what your datasource is, maybe you'll have to follow another approach to get b and c vaues,but the principle should remain the same):
    // Declare a private variable for your Data at the appropriate place in your code
    private Hashtable temp = new Hashtable<String, ArrayList<String>>();
    // Then, in the method you use to retrieve backend data and populate the dropdown,
    // populate the Hashtable, too
    Iterator<TableData> a = origin.iterator();
    while (a.hasNext()) {
         TableData current = a.next();
         String b = current.getB();
         String c = current.getC();
         ArrayList<String> values = this.temp.get(b);
         if (values == null) {
              values = new ArrayList<String>();
         values.add(c);
         this.temp.put(b, values);
    So after this, you'll have a Hashtable with the B values als keys and collections of C values of this particular B as value:
    VID --> (911256, 811256)
    SONY --> (11256)
    Use
    temp.keySet()
    to populate your dropdown.
    After the user selects an entry from the dropdown (let's say stored in variable selectedB), you will be able to retrieve the collection of c's from your Hashtable
    // In the metod you handle the selection event with, get the c value collection
    //and use it to select from your other table
    ArrayList<String> selectedCs = this.temp.get(selectedB);
    // now iterate over the selectedCs items and use each of these
    //to continue retrieving whatever data you need...
    for (String oneC : selectedCs) {
         // Select Data from backend using oneC in the where-Clause or whatever...
    Hope that helps

  • How to excecute simple select using EntityManager

    Hello I am developing a project using Seam, JSF, EJB and JBoss.
    All the mappings to the database are correctly done.
    However I would like to create a simple select that retrieves the maximum value of the id.
    This is how I thought I could do it.
    Query q = em.createNativeQuery("select max(id)", Project.class);
    But it keeps telling me that column id cannot be found.
    Am I writing something wrong?

    Ok, this is how I solved it.
    Query q = em.createQuery("select max(id) from " + Project.class.getName());
    Changed it to createQuery and class.getName

  • Alert about the loading time & Restrict the number of the rows retrieved

    Hi everybody, maybe the question is stupid, but I didn't find yet an answer...
    I'm using BIP 10.1.3.4.1
    Because I have many reports with a huge amount of data to display (in HTML format) and customers once clicked on "View" have to wait a lot of time, they asked me if there is the possibility to do the following things:
    1. restrict the number of the rows retrieved (this for each report); this request has to be dynamic (different rows' number for each report and for each user); so, I can't modify the query into the data template in order to retrieve a fixed number of rows;
    2. show an alert who says for example " The data loading will take 5 minutes. Do you want to proceed ? YES - NO" This to inform the users how much time they have to wait if they click on Yes.
    I checked under the Administrator TAB...but I didn't find nothing "native" about the two questions above.....
    So, I ask you if there is a way to activate these features (if they exist "native") or a workaround to implement what I described above.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Alex

    Hi Vetsrini, thanks for your answer.....but what does it mean ? There are no solutions for my requests ? I remember that Discoverer had the possibility to have an alert as I would like to have with BI Publisher and there was the possibility to choose how many rows it was required from the customer....Is it possible that with BIP is not applicable ?
    Have a good day

    Did you reinstall CS3 after CC?
    For that matter, doing an in-place upgrade on the OS is always a gamble with Adobe programs. Reinstalling all the versions you need, in order, would probably solve your problem.
    And you shouldn't need to save as IDML after opening the .inx in CC.

  • Simple Select statement in MS Access

    I am not able to get this simple select statement working in MS Access.
    "SELECT PhotoLocation from RfidData WHERE TeamID = '"+teamID ;
    It is using a variable called teamID which is a string.
    The error is java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression
    Please Suggest
    Thank You...

    Let's look at your code, shall we?
    public String readPhotoLoc(String teamID)
        Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
        Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection(dbURL,"","");
        PreparedStatement ps = con.prepareStatement("Select PhotoLocation from RfidData ");  // There's no bind parameter here, so setString will do nothing
    ps.setString(1,teamID);
    ResultSet rs = ps.executeQuery();  // what do you do with the ResultSet?  Nothing.  //You don't return anything,  either.  I doubt that this mess even compiles.
    }Here's one suggestion for how to write it properly:
    public String readPhotoLoc(Connection connection, String teamID)
        String photoLoc = null;
         PreparedStatement ps = null;
         ResultSet rs = null;
        try
            String query = "SELECT PhotoLocation FROM RfidData WHERE TeamID = ?";
            ps = connection.prepareStatement(query);
            ps.setString(1,teamID);
            rs = ps.executeQuery();
            while (rs.next())
                photoLoc = rs.getString("PhotoLocation");
            return photoLoc;
        catch (SQLException e)
              e.printStackTrace();
               return null;
        finally
              try { if (rs != null) rs.close(); } catch (SQLException ignoreOrLogThis) {}
              try { if (ps != null) ps.close(); } catch (SQLException ignoreOrLogThis) {}
    }Make sure that the types of the columns match the Java types.

  • Restricting users ability to modified Max Rows Retrieved

    Hi
    In Web Intelligence Rich Client how can I restrict a users ability to change the Max Rows Retrieved in a query.
    Currently we use Desktop Intelligence and restrict max rows retrieved in the universe, but I note this can be overwritten when by the user in Webi Rich Client at the query creation stage.
    SAP documentation indicates that a restriction can be applied in the security profile via the CMC but I'm unable to find this.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers
    Sean

    Any info would be helpful at this stage.  Thanks
