Dramatically reduce the amt of space used by OSX

I have a late 09' Mac Mini that's recently been upgraded from 2GB to 8GB of DDR3 1066Mhz RAM.
Plus, it's had it's 2.5" 5400RPM 160GB HDD replaced by a 240GB SSD...
With SSD's, it's typically a good idea to have at least 10% of the total capacity allocated as free space (how much depends on the SSD)
I just upgraded from SL (with all the latest updates applied) to Mavericks, & I noticed that the latter is using far more space.*
On SL 7.1GB was used & on Mavericks 11.6GB is now used, & I haven't even applied all the latest updates to Mavericks yet!**
Looking for tips on how to greatly reduce the space used, without greatly reducing the capability/functionality/utility of the OS.
Thank-you.
*both were clean OSX installs, only native/stock apps, no 3rd-party ones yet
**actually, it looks like it's auto-updated to the latest build of OSX, I just used the update tool & the only update left was for iBooks

My guess is that the space increased was due to the sleep image increase when you added 6G of RAM.
You can have the mini only use RAM for sleep.
The downside is that if you loose power while sleeping, then the sleep image will be gone.  Updside is 8G of diskspace reclaimed.
In Terminal, run:
    pmset -g
Look for hibernatemode
If it's hibernatemode=3, then "The system will store a copy of memory to persistent storage (the disk)"
If it's hibernatemode=0, then "The system will not back memory up to persistent storage"
If hibernatemode=3, look for the sleepimage with:
     ls -l /var/vm/sleepimage
To reclaim disk space:
In Terminal:
     sudo pmset hibernatemode 0
Then you have to remove the sleepimage with:
     sudo rm -i /var/vm/sleepimage
For more infor, see: man pmset
Okay finally had a chance to check this, nope it's set to: hibernatemode 0
Also did a ls -l /var/vm/sleepimage & got: "No so such file or directory"
I also did a ls -al in /var/vm & saw 2x swapfiles which seem to be taking a considerable amount of space.
These generally shouldn't be touched, right?
After reading that article you linked to & others it linked to, + some other reading before them, I'm 100% sure I don't want hibernatemode 1.
Resume/Autosave/Versions etc, + the FS's natural journaling abiities are more than enough for a desktop like the Mini.
So back to my original question, what else can be done to reduce space used?
I've done lots of research/reading since, but I'm still not 100% happy with the reductions.
I've come a long way though, largely by using symlinks to redirect data heavy dirs in my home dir, haven't touched ~/Library & am reluctant to for various reasons.

I'm attempting to use some code like this to make a tabbed

How do I limit the amount of space used by photos on my phone - now that I turned iCloud on it is taking over my phone

    Hello Maahk,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you would like to optimize your Photos storage. If you are using iCloud Photo Library on your iPhone, please read over the information in the attached article.
iCloud Photo Library FAQ - Apple Support
Can I use iCloud Photo Library to save space on my device?
iCloud Photo Library automatically keeps all your photos and videos in the original, high-resolution version. Follow these steps to choose how you store your photos and videos on your device:
In iOS, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos or Settings > Photos & Camera, then select a storage setting.
In OS X, click Photos > Preferences > iCloud, then select a storage setting.
If you turn on Optimize [device] Storage, iCloud Photo Library will automatically manage the size of your library on your device, so you can make the most of your device's storage and access more photos than ever. All of your original, full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud while device-size versions are kept on your device. You can download the original photos and videos over Wi-Fi or cellular when you need them.
If you turn on Download Originals, iCloud Photo Library will keep your original, full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and on your device. Download Originals is the default setting for iOS devices with the free 5 GB storage plan and for all Mac devices.
    Have a great day,
    Joe

When I look in Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel it reports Firefox as 5.44GB. Could this be true? If so how do I reduce the amount of space it is taking up?

It is quite common for the program size listings to be wrong. To check the actual size of the Firefox installation, you can manually check the size of the Firefox [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory installation directory]. It is is typically around 26-30Mb, and the default location on 32 bit Windows is C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\
There are also a couple of other locations where Firefox stores data, check the size of the following folders as well.
Firefox also stores user data such as bookmarks and passwords in the [[profiles|profile folder]]. It should be inside this folder C:\Users\''username''\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
Firefox stores temporary files in the cache. To find the location of the cache, type '''about:cache''' into the location bar. It should be inside this folder C:\Users\''username''\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
The last 2 folders are normally hidden, you may need to set Vista to [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial130.html show hidden files and folders].

  • How to reduce the cloning time if using cold backup?

    Hi,
We are using EBS r12 (12.0.6) with database 10.2.0.3 in Linux Redhat 4 32-bit envoirnment.
Our datbase size is around 480 GB and we are facing the issues to provide the clone to my consultants for meet the target timelines in given time.
(Source:)---- Production Dell R900 Server machine having 32-GB RAM and 8 Quard Core CPU's.
(Target:)---- Clone Dell 2950 Server machine having 16-GB RAM and 4-Quard Core CPU's.
Currectly we are taking cold backup like:
1: Auto shutdown EBS r12 database nighthy at 12:00 AM daily and compress the backup using tar utility in linux. This process takes 6:00 hours aprox:
2: After that we move compressed file to clone machine and then uncompressed it, and this process takes 5:00 hours aprox.
3: And performe standard cloning steps.
    Questions:
1: How to reduce time of this backup process?
3: Is there any other way to reduce the cloning process.
2: What type of backup oracle recommended to their customers for this type of process?
    Thanks.

1: How to reduce time of this backup process?Without using third party tools, it might be hard to tune the timing of compressing/uncompressing the file.
Have you tried to use scp command? This would help if your network throughput is acceptable.
3: Is there any other way to reduce the cloning process.Since the main issue you have with the copy, then you might copy the files remotely from the source to the target, or using any other storage/backup tools (like file system snapshot).
2: What type of backup oracle recommended to their customers for this type of process?Oracle does not recommend any type of backup as the tools used are not Oracle products.
    Thanks,

  • How do I reduce the amount of space that "Other" takes up on my macbook pro.

I've just bought a new macbook pro with Retina display & running Yosemite. I have the 128Gb version.
Initially I downloaded all my music into iTunes, but after seeing that it took up almost 40Gb of the 128Gb I decided to delete it from the Macbook. But now I find that I have 40Gb of "Other" in it's place. Does anyone know what "Other" is and how I can reduce it's bulk? (Image attached)

  • How can I reduce the amount of space taken up by "other" on my phone?

In iTunes my iPhone (4s) shows up with 2.81 gb designated "other."  I'd really REALLY like to use this space for other things and want to get rid of the "other."  I've read a lot of posts about restoring your phone (which I did) and I also tried deleting old texts/videos and have less than 100 photos on my phone to begin with.  I used some outside software at the suggestion of a blog post on this to delete some kind of extra music file and it worked!... for a bit.  It showed my "other" files at 220 mb and freed up a lot of space on the phone.  When I tried to play music on it, however, the songs didn't work.  So I hooked my phone back up to my computer, resynced the audio files, and now my 2.81 gb of "other" are back.  I've wasted almost 3 hours on this and have nothing to show for it.  What can I do?!

I'll try this again starting it as new, but when I restored it before (after deleting all the apps and music off it) it didn't help.  Thanks for the suggestion!

  • Why can't I reduce the storage my icloud email is using?

I have been trying for 2 weeks to reduce the amount of space I'm using on iCloud and I can't do it. I moved every email to a folder stored on my computer, I deleted all sent messages. The space I'm using has actually gone up! What's wrong? I have 2 days to do this. Help!
    brad

maybe it's other data that is accumulating in the icloud storage.  Do you have a lot of photos in camera roll that are being backed up from an iOS device to icloud?  (Are you using any iOS device to connect to icloud, or only the mac?)

  • How can I limit the amount of space on a Time Capsule used by Time Machine?

I know that you cannot partition a Time Capsule drive.  However, I was wondering about other options for limiting the amount of space used by Time Machine so that I can use the rest of the space for other purposes.
I heard something about creating a disk image on the Time Capsule to limit the amount of space used by Time Machine.  If I create a disk image, would TM just use all the space that's not part of the disk image?  How do I access the disk image part?  Can I manually drag and drop files to it from my Mac like any other external drive?  Could I set up the disk image part to work with a Windows computer?
I've also heard things about modifying sparsebundles which I don't know anything about.  How does this work?  What happens to the space that is not part of the TM sparsebundle?  How do I access it?  Can I manually drag and drop files to it from my Mac like any other external drive?  Could I set up the extra space to work with a Windows computer?

Some other things to make note of:
Some disk image formats have a maximum size and only use that size after they have had to expand to actually hold that much data. Make sure you are not using this type of image so you can guarantee the space is reserved. Sparse bundles are like this. I haven't read up on the sparse bundle trick, but I assume it's something to do with setting a maximum size for it.
When you open up the Time Capsule disk, you will first be looking at the normal storage space. When you create an image, there will be a file you click on that mounts another drive that uses space on the Time Capsule. This shows up as just one file unless you open it to see it's contents.

  • How can I change or reduce the line spacing to single in a "multiple lines of text" column in a list?

We keep many logs in a simple list format. One of the columns requires a description using the "multiple lines of text" default column. Sometimes the person making the entry needs to complete about 20-30 lines of text. Users are requesting we reduce
the amount of space advanced between lines to save space and be more concise. Is there a way to reduce the line spacing for the column entries to single spacing without code?
    Maree N Percival

We determined that the site column settings were incorrect for allowing single spacing, we changed the site column setting from "Enhanced rich text (Rich text with pictures, tables, and hyperlinks)" to  "Rich text (Bold, italics, text alignment, hyperlinks)"
and it is now keeping the text in single spaced lines.

zen micro just has 2 mins of anti-shock time, and depends on the bitrate of music...
It's so bad that no player support the APE files(perfect sound quality and half the size)

Zericho: There's no such thing as "anti-shock" time on a hard disk based MP3 player. See here in the Zen FAQ at Nomadness.net.
WAV files will run the hard disk almost constantly, so dramatically reduce the battery time. From tests I remember on the NJB3, it was approximately 20-30% that of a 28 kbit/s MP3 file.
WAV files also have other problems in that they have no tagging system, although using MediaSource you can associate tags with them for transfer.
WMA lossless support has been on the wishlist for a while.
FLAC is a more common lossless format supported by the Rio Karma, and perhaps other players. I think the iPod has a lossless format also. I've still heard some people say that both a lossless file and a "decompressed" lossless file sound different from the original. Of course there's others that say you can't hear the difference between a 320kbit/s LAME encoded MP3 and the original file...

  • Amount of space used

3 Part Question - ( 1 ) Using my G5 with iMovie 6.0.3 I have downloading video from a camcorder. I checked the amount of free space left on the hard drive before downloading and it was at 30GB. With just 7 minutes of video downloaded and no extra editing, music or other done to it, it shows now only 23 GB left to use with some more to enter on the same movie.
How can that be for only 7 mins of video .... When putting a store bought DVD onto the computer to view , it only takes up about 7.4 GB of space on the hard drive for a 2 hour movie .... what am I not understanding ?
    (2) The iMovie shows the amount of time and the remaining space allowed to use , but is there somewhere I can find to actually see the amount of space used to see if the math is correct or there is something else wrong ?
    (3) After I read the response to the above .... and possibly all is in working order ..... is it possible then to use a back up hard drive to make the movie if I don't have sufficient space on the hard drive and then burn it to DVD afterwards on the back up hard drive or do I have to copy it back on the computer if there is enough space. ?
    Thanks, Eric

    Hi
Manus - Wrong word - Should have spelled "Script".
    1) Your Reply > If You import 1 hour then cut away 53 minutes = 7 min
it still takes up 13-14GB though it is a non-destructive editor. It doesn't tuch Your import just
writes a script on what frames to be shown.
Not really understanding that .. if I cut away 53 mins and then emptied the trash ... should it just use the 2GB of space for the 7 mins I have on I movie .... And what's a "manus " on what frames to be shown .... ?
No it doesn't help to empty trash. iMovie is a non-destructive editor. All that has been imported
stays untuched in it's media folder. UNTIL - If You delete ALL - every single frame of an imported
clip. Delet this and then empty trash. It's gone. BUT if You use only one frame - full import stays.
To save space one often - export out needed material to a new tape.
Delete the old import project and starts a new one with material from the new tape.
    3) Back HardDrive to use to make a movie with iMovie .. Your Reply > Has to be Mac Os Extended formatted - Most bought as DOS/FAT32 formatted ? Sorry that's over my head .....
If You buy an external hard disk it has to be organised in a way called "Formatting" and this is most
often done for Window PC computers. This way doesn't work when using it with a Mac and especially
    when doing Video works.
To find out how it is formatted:
    • Connect it to Youre Mac via FireWire (avoid USB/USB2)
    • Select it when it showes up on desktop
    • Press [cmd-i]
Now You can read how it is structured "formatted".
If it is empty - You have not start to store anything on it - You can re-formatte it with:
Apple Disk Util tool (in Applications/Tools)
Hopfully this has brought any light into your questions.
    Yours Bengt W
