Dreamweaver & jstl and tomcat

Hey,
using Dreamweaver Templates with jstl sql.
If I pull data from my database , and place them into
an unordered list:
<!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="EditRegion6" -->
<ul>
<sql:query var="rs" dataSource="jdbc/db"> select newsletterid, email from newsletter</sql:query>
<c:forEach var="row" items="${rs.rows }">
<li><span class="date"></span>
${row.email }</li>
</c:forEach>
</ul>
<!-- TemplateEndEditable -->
the values inside <li> 's are empty.
When I run it in a non-template page works fine.
Any solutions?

<%@taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/sql" prefix="sql"%>
<%@taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/format" prefix="c"%>
<div class="inner">
<h2>Coming Events </h2>
<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="EditRegion6" -->
<ul>
<li><span class="date"></span>
<a href="#"></a></li>
</ul>
<!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
</div>

  • Simple setup problems with JSTL and Tomcat

    Hi all, I'm having some problems getting JSTL to work the 1st time. JSTL setup seems to be a common problem for relative newbies, but having read previous threads, I still haven't been able to solve my problem so hopefully someone can help:
    the jstl.jar and standard.jar are in my WEB-INF/lib directory, so I don't think it's a classpath problem.
    My jsp page has the following at the top:
    <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jstl/core" prefix="c" %>Later, I reference a bean var with :
    <c:out value="My var is : ${var.property}"/>In my web.xml I have:
      <taglib>
       <taglib-uri>http://java.sun.com/jstl/core</taglib-uri>
       <taglib-location>/WEB-INF/lib/jstl.jar</taglib-location>
      </taglib>And I've placed the actual tld (c.tld) in the WEB-INF directory.
    On startup I get the error when compiling the JSP:
    No such tag out in the tag library imported with prefix c
    Can anyone help here?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

    I think this note from the JSTL mailing list by Shawn Bayern, one of the lead developers of Jakarta JSTL and the author of "JSTL In Action", will clarify it:
    http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg04587.html
    Don't put that <taglib> in your web.xml. All the books tell you to do it, but Shawn Bayern has the right answer. The URI should be the one that's in the TLD JAR .tld files.
    I use JSTL and Tomcat 4.1.24 without the <taglib>, and it works fine. - MOD

  • Java, JSTL and Tomcat Auto Installation( Windows)

    Anyone know of a program that installs the Java SDK, Tomca and JSTL all in one go?
    I'm fed up of messing about with all this manual configuration to no avail.
    Cheers guys.
    Jamie

    It's not that hard to do:
    1- Download the Windows installer for JDK 1.5.0_09 from this page: [url http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp]Java SE Downloads.
    - Click on the JDK 5.0 Update 9 Download button.
    - Click on the Accept radio button.
    - Click on the Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language link.
    2- Double-click on the jdk-1_5_0_09-windows-i586-p.exe file and follow the easy steps.
    3- Download the [url http://apache.mirrors.northco.net/tomcat/tomcat-5/v5.5.20/bin/apache-tomcat-5.5.20.exe]Windows installer for Tomcat 5.5.20.
    4- Double-click on the apache-tomcat-5.5.20.exe file and follow the easy steps.
    5- Download the [url http://gulus.usherbrooke.ca/pub/appl/apache/jakarta/taglibs/standard/binaries/jakarta-taglibs-standard-1.1.2.zip]JSTL 1.1.2.
    6- Extract the jstl.jar and standard.jar files into your WEB-INF/lib web application folder.
    You're all set!

  • JSTL and TOMCAT what files go where?

    I have just started to learn JSP, and sofar everything is going ok except that I need to use the JSTL file and the book I'm using says do this and it don't work!! Can anyone give me a difinative answer as I am now stuck not able to move on any more.
    When I run my JSP id can't find the uri="http://java.sun.com/jstl/core_rt"
    The book says move the files from the C:\java2\jakarta-taglibs-src\standard-1.0.2\lib directory to the lib directory within the WEB-INF folder of my app but no luck.
    Can anyone tell me what needs to go where please!
    Jon

    steps for jstl to work.
    1. copy the jar files to \WEB-INF\lib.
    2. copy the tld file to \WEB-INF
    3. add the following content to your \WEB-INF\web.xml file.
    <taglib>
    <taglib-uri>http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core</taglib-uri>
    <taglib-location>/WEB-INF/c.tld</taglib-location>
    </taglib>
    add similar contents for all the jstl libraries. (c, x, fmt, sql, etc...)
    4. on the jsp page, add this at the start.
    <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" prefix="c"%>
    add similar entries for all the taglibs u want to use.
    5. restart tomcat.
    ur done....
    hope it helps.

  • Problem using jstl and displaytags

    Hi all,
    I am using display tags taglib for generation of table. One of the columns has to be shown with the hyperlink attached to it. In order to acheive this i am using jstl taglib together with displaytags
    <display:table name="reportList" id="row" requestURI="viewengagementstatus.do" style="width: 100%;">
    <display:column  title="Period"  sortable="true" style="text-align:  center;" >
    <a href="/jsps/reportsummary.do?eid=<c:out value="${row.eid}" />&reportId=<c:out value="${row.ReportID}" />&reportPeriod=<c:out value="${row.targetDate}"/> " target="_blank"><font size="1"><c:out value="${row.targetDate}"/></font></a>
    </display:column>I am using jstl1.1.2.jar for jstl.
    When i run this on Weblogic10 and windows OS i am able to view the results. On performing the view source on the IE window, i get the following:
    <td style="text-align:  center;">
                   <a href="/jsps/reportsummary.do?eid=78004&reportId=104093&reportPeriod=Nov-2008 " target="_blank"><font size="1">Nov-2008</font></a>
    </td>but when the same code is run on the Weblogic deployed on the Linux machine, i am not getting the links and the name:
    the view-source of the application deployed on the linux machine shows:
    td style="text-align:  center;">
                   <a href="/jsps/reportsummary.do?eid=&reportId=&reportPeriod=" target="_blank"><font size="1"></font></a>
    </td>Any Ideas why this is occuring?
    Any help would be appreciated

    You should be using the one or the other, not both. Since your actual code shows that you don't need the jstl/core_rt taglib (you're using the JSP EL ${ } in JSTL tags rather than scriptlets <%= %> ), just remove that taglib declaration and continue using the jstl/core taglib.
    You should also rather place both the JSTL and standard JAR in the classpath of the application server. In case of Tomcat, put it in its /lib directory. Then remove all unnecessary JSTL and Standard JAR and TLD files from your whole webapplication project and also remove any related entries from the web.xml of your webapplication project. To use JSTL you only need to put the JAR files in the classpath of the application server and define the taglib in your JSP. Nothing less and nothing more. If you're using JSTL 1.2 rather than JSTL 1.1, then you need to remove the standard.jar file too since it is already merged in the jstl-1.2.jar file.
    Oh, the web.xml should also be declared that way that the application server uses at least servlet 2.4.

  • How to install JSTL with Tomcat 6.0

    Hi
    I'm trying to install JSTL with tomcat 6.0.
    I did not understand what is the link that I need to use in the following suns website.
    http://java.sun.com/products/jsp/jstl/.
    Could anyone help me with this.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    First you need to add the JSTL jars(jstl-api-x.x.jar and jstl-impl-x.x.jar) to the lib dir under your WEB-INF tomcat dir and then, to use it on a JSP page make sure the follwing line is added before the <HTML> tag.
    <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" prefix="c" %>There you go. Just enjoy it now.
    Thanks

  • Juggle between jstl and jsp!

    I have a list of items and whose size is obtained by jstl as follows:
    <c:set var="num" value="${fn:length(form.namesList)}"/>I have to find the number of blocks using jsp and I am trying as follows which is giving jspException.
    <%int numCols = (int)Math.ceil( num / 10.0);%>Can anyone tell me the problem over here?
    I need to use numCols to display my results using jstl as follows:
    <c:forEach var="y" begin="${1}" end="${numCols }">
    </c:forEach>Can juggle between jstl and jsp like this?

    This depends on the version of JSP you are using:
    If you are using JSP 2.0 (like Tomcat 5), make sure you have downloaded and installed JSTL 1.1 and set the web.xml up to use the Servlet 2.4 specs. Then the code you wrote should work.
    If you are using JSP 1.x (like Tomcat 4 and below), make sure you have JSTL 1.0. Then you can only use EL (the Expression Language used to translate ${...} expressions) inside JSTL.
    If you want to use EL inside your custome tags, look through the Apache Jakarta sight. Somewhere they have an ELExpression translator (a couple of classes actually - whose full names I forget). These classes will let you take the ${...} expressions in as strings, pass them through the translators and get the correct objects back out.
    Or you could go a simpler root:
    <mob:whatever object="test" name="newname" />
    then in your custom tag:
      MyType test = (MyType)pageContext.findAttribute(object);
      test.setName(name);

    Due to the fact, that org/apache/xpath/XPathException belongs to xalan, i copied the xalan 2.7.0 to the web-inf/lib directory. But this doesn't solve the problem. I'm tried it also with xalan, xerces and jaxp. Again, it doesn't work.
    Can anybody help me with this problem?
    bye

    Couple of things, possibly unrelated, but not sure.
    You are using JSTL1.0 uris.
    With Tomcat5 you can use JSTL1.1, and the Servlet2.4 spec.
    You would use the URI: <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" prefix="c" %>
    and also update your web.xml file to declare itself as version 2.4
    You shouldn't need any of the xalan xerces or jaxp classes in web-inf/lib.
    xerces is by default found in the [TOMCAT]/common/endorsed directory.
    The others should be provided with the standard java API.
    I would try with minimal jar files in web-inf/lib
    Occasionally if you include files twice in the classpath it will create ClassNotFoundExceptions like this.
    Hope this helps,

  • Question regarding JSTL and function calls

    Hello
    I'm quite new to JSTL and I'm having a problem accessing a function when I want to pass argument to that function.
    Im using MVC where my M (model.jsp) can be accest from my V (view.jsp) by doing ${model.(parameter/some function) }
    in my M I have a couple of getMethods() (example: getThisInfo() ) and som control methods like "isSomethingValid(arg1)"
    my question is lets say I want to access my "isSomethingValid(arg1)" and arg1 should be the value of "getThisInfo()" I thought I could do like
    ${model.somethingValid($model.thisInfo)} but it isnt working I get:
    "Unable to parse EL function ${model.somethingValid(model.thisInfo)}"
    I know that the syntax above is a mix of scriptlet and JSTL but I dont know how to or if its even possible to achieve this?
    Thanks for helping me!
    Best Regards/DS

    By default, EL can only access getters and setters on objects.
    It can not execute general methods on an object.
    You can define function libraries that call static methods
    You have to write the method as static, and then declare it in a tld.
    public boolean checkValid(Model m, Info i){ ...}
    and then you could invoke it something like
    <%@ taglib uri="myfunctionstaglib" prefix="myfunctions" %>
    ${myfunctions:checkValid(model, model.thisInfo)}

  • Communication problem between NetBeans and Tomcat

    hi!
    i got a quite mysterious problem. here is what happens:
    - i start NetBeans 5.5.1 (the first time)
    - i want to debug my JSF-Project, the Debugger starts
    - After a few seconds the debugger waits for tomcat (it sais: "Waiting for Tomcat...") and tomcat starts
    - Again after a few seconds the tomcat-debugger-output sais "Tomcat startet in 3333 ms".
    okay.
    when i enter http://localhost:8084/ in my browser i get the tomcat homepage, so the server has definitely started! But nothing happens in NetBeans and nothing happens with my project....
    In the lower-right corner i see this blue working-bar that sais "deploying project" but nothing happens. The Project-Debugger-Output still sais "Waiting for Tomcat..." but nothing happens...
    And after something around 3 minutes (i guess it's a timeout) i get the error "Starting of Tomcat failed." But is HAS started, i can login to the Administration-Area in my browser!
    so i guess there is a communication problem between netbeans an tomcat. Netbeans waits for a message from tomcat but tomcat doesn't send it..or netbeans doesn't understand it.
    But the story goes on:
    When i press the debug-button a second time it takes only a few seconds till i get the message: "Tomcat server port 8084 already in use". OF COURSE! Because Tomcat has already startet and can't be stoped by NetBeans.
    i'm trying to solve this problem for 4 days now, so i would be very happy if anyone has an idea where to start/continue the search...
    thanks,
    flo.

  • Problem launching a jsp page with eclipse and tomcat

    Hi,
    I have just started using eclipse and tomcat for creating dynamic web pages. I tried to launch a jsp page after starting the tomcat server with the URL: http://locahost:8080/HelloWorld/, an error page was displayed as below:
    HTTP Status 404 -/
    type Status report
    message /_
    description The requested resource (-) is not available
    Apache Tomcat/5.5.17
    I didn't get any error at the console and when i just typed http://localhost, a pop up menu saying that the connection was refused when attempting to contact localhost.
    I'm not sure what is the problem here. Could it be the permssion to the localhost is not granted by the system as the eclipse IDE is running using linux?
    Hope someone can help.

  • Convert HTML ASCII codes with JSTL and Apache Taglibs?

    I am building a web application using JSTL and some of the Apache Taglibs, so these are the taglibs I have at my disposal currently. What I am looking for is the ability to handle the &#039; that appears in submitted search strings which contain the ' character. SQL seems to be able to handle other special characters (such as &, [, ", etc) but I can't get it to get along with the &#039;.  I have tried using a <string:replace replace="&#039;" with="\&#039;"> to escape the &#039;, but this doesn't seem to work either.  Any suggestions?  Let me know if you need more information to be able to fully understand the situation.

    By the way, the search string that a user enters is getting Tokenized using " " as the token and then fed directly into multiple SQL LIKE comparisons based on how many tokens were found.
