Duplicating and Editing a Fluid Grid Layout

Hi, I am making a website and I have copied and pasted a current page and just wanted to remove the text and pictures on the page that was a duplicate so I could put new info onto it. How come every time i remove a picture or text, it makes the same changes to the origional document? is there a way to get around this so I dont have to create a fresh page from scratch? It was just another page that I wanted with the same format and styling, but with obvioulsy different text and pictures on it.
Thank you
Chris

How come every time i remove a picture or text, it makes the same changes to the origional document?
This is certainly not the expected behavior, nor is it a behavior I have ever encountered. Would it be possible for you to upload the page to some web space that you control and post a link to that page? Also please tell us which text/images are being deleted that also affect the other page.

  • Setting background-image as editable in Fluid Grid Layout (Template file)

    Hi, Im very basic on Dreamweaver so bare with me,
    I am creating my first website and setting up my template file.
    I am struggling with making my background image editable in the template file,
    Alot of the awnsers point me into creating a new background style sheet which I have done.
    I have included :
    <link rel="stylesheet" href="../Background style sheet.css" type="text/css">
    into my <head> in the source code and now im pretty lost for what to do next... I want to link it to all my mobile, tablet and desktop #main divs and then be able to edit the background image for my different web pages;
    for example my home page is one background-image and then the other web pages all have other background images.
    Sorry if I am not asking the right questions, I am very new to coding
    Regards,
    Confused Graphic Design student.

    It's actually very easy to target the <body> of each page in an external stylesheet to change the background individually, just not with DW Templates.
    Normally, what I would do is give each page's <body> tag an id, for example, on an about.html page...
    <body id="about">
    Then in the css, you would give the #about id a background-image setting...
    #about {
         background-image:url(about_bg.jpg);
    Each page would have a similarly named id in the <body> and a corresponding #id in the css.
    Side Note: Stick to lower case, alpha numeric file names for all of your pages and images. Use underscores or hyphens instead of spaces for them too. Servers are CaSe SenSitIvE and a link to Index.html (capital i) will not go to a page named index.html (lowercase i). It will work on your local system, just not on the server because the server sees the case structure difference as two separate files.

  • DW6 fluid grid layout issue: writes to page instead of css file

    Using DW6 (version 12, owned, build 5861) on Windows 7 64 bit.
    Following tutorials and the help files to use the fluid grid layout.
    Start a blank page on a new site, which inserts the starter div and new css file
    Immediately save page, which also generates/saves ancillary files (js and css).
    Remove inner div that's created in order to use my own (have also tried leaving the default one in place and using that)
    Insert new div, within the "gridContainer clearfix" div.
    Place cursor just after that new div, still inside "gridContainer clearfix" and add new "fluid grid layout div tag", new row.
    Following same method, do so again.
    Dreamweaver adds the generated CSS code to the actual page instead of the expected div, visibly (minified)....and everything breaks. It does *not* add the code into the CSS file from there on and the only way to have it display the div (which does not show any visual indicators since the CSS is basically lost that would do so, is to CTRL-Z to undo the last step. It undoes the CSS showing as the only content in the HTML file, and *does* show a div with the name I'd given it. If I copy/paste that generated CSS into the fluid css file *then* CTRL-Z, it looks the way it's supposed to, with drag handles, visible indentations and so on.
    If I then change div widths or position, it does record those changes in the CSS file, so it appears this is only when inserting new divs after the second one that's a problem (third div inside the container is when it starts choking; none overlap).
    This is repeatable, on both desktop and laptop, running the same version. I've tried saving after every div insertion, only saving at the start, code view only, split only...
    I've tried searching for someone else having this issue and must not be wording the search properly, can't find anyone else seeing this. It's a weird one.
    If anyone can point me to something to try so the workaround isn't needed, it would be appreciated.

    OK try this workflow.
    Create a new FGLayout and SAVE.  This will save your CSS file with whichever name you give it.
    Switch to Design View.  Click on Mobile Display.  Build your mobile layout first since this is what everything else is based on.
    Insert a few Divs and don't worry about content.  Just get the basic Div structure stacked one on top of the other like this:
    <div class="gridContainer clearfix">
         <div id="div1">
              Div 1
         </div>
          <div id="div2">
              Div 2
         </div>
         <div id="div3">
              Div 3
         </div>
          <div id="div4">
              Div 4
         </div>
    </div>
    Hit Save and name your HTML file.   Do not edit the CSS file.  DW will generate the necessary layout code for you.
    Switch to Tablet Display.
    Grab the right side handles to resize divs and move to row above as desired.
    Save often during development.
    Switch to Desktop Display and repeat.
    Once your layout is built, test media queries by previewing in browsers by resizing viewport
    When you are completely satisfied with your responsive layout, begin adding content and use a separate external style sheet for content styles.  DO NOT EDIT boilerplate or Layout CSS files as doing so could break your layout.

  • Cannot drag divs in fluid grid layout

    I am running Dreamweaver CS6 in OS X Mavericks.
    When I am building pages in fluid grid layout I seem to reach a point where I can no longer grab div boxes on the left or right to resize. Is this because you cannot edit a fluid grid layout from a template?
    Thanks,
    Joshua

    I can tell you from personal experience that once the FGLayouts are built for mobile, tablet and desktop, fully tested and validated, you should put a HALT on that phase of your project.
    Then SaveAs Template.  Everything from that point forward is sans the FG Design Panels and just about adding content.
    And yes, keeping content styles in a separate physical file is highly recommended.  That way if something awful happens to your CSS styles, you're not putting your FGLayouts in peril.

  • Creating Adaptive Designs Using Fluid Grid Layouts in Dreamweaver CS6 | Digital Design CS6 | Adobe TV

    maybe someone here can answer this. Can I take an existing website and apply the fluid grid layout feature to it? I have one regular website that is not responsive. I've tried copying and pasting into the dreamweaver grid layout, but it doesn't respond as expected. Is this even possible?

  • How to edit fluid grid layout in Dreamweaver CS6

    Hi all
    I am a designer at the company I work for and we've been building repsonsive designs for the past 12months. I've decided that it would be good for me to try out the new fluid grid layout tool in Dreamweaver CS6 to see if we can improve the design process by using dreamweaver to allow us to quickly prototype my designs for mobile, tablet and desktop.
    However I have 2 problems so far.
    1) I've created my first fluid grid layout and saved all the files into a new folder. I set grid widths and gutter but now want to edit the values as I am not happy with the gutter. Can this be done? I can't seem to find the file that does this so can anyone point me in the right direction?
    2) We have traditionally used pixels to define our grids. I normally produce a grid with a fixed pixel gutter, overall width and column size. It seems that Dreamweaver only has the option to use percentages. Can anyone tell me if this can be changed and again where I can do this?
    Thanks for your  help
    Trevor

    In Code View, open your FluidGrid.css file (or whatever you named it) when you created the layout.
    FluidGrid Layouts are not perfect and the interface could use a lot of improvement.  That said, I think they can be used as a starting point for simple layout projects providing you understand their limitations and are willing to manually tweak the FluidGrid.css code.
    If you've been doing Responsive Layouts for 12 months, you're probably building desktop to mobile whereas FluidGrids build from mobile to desktop.   It takes a little adjustment in thinking.
    Keep FluidGrid.css for layout only.  Use a seperate stylesheet for your content styles.

    I downloaded Dreamweaver CC 2014.1, started using it but cannot find Show Fluid Grid Layout Guides button, Resize LI.link sizing handle and 'move up a Row' arrow. Where can I find them?

    You have the latest version (CC 2014.1 or 2014.1.1) in which the interface condenses Design View with Live View buttons in normal layouts.  See screenshot.
    However, in FGLayouts, Live View is the only option which poses some editing problems and has been highly criticized.
    Is there any way to display the Design View in fluid grid pages?

  • Unable to edit elements in Fluid Grid Layout - Dreamweaver CC

    Hello. I have an issue whereby the elements inserted in to a Fluid Grid Layout designed webpage become 'locked' (??) I can no longer edit them and when they are clicked on I just get a blue border. No handles, eye, delete button etc..
    I cannot find any pattern on why this is happening and seems to be random. Although I am happy to accept I am doing something wrong..
    Any ideas?

    Are you removing/modifying any of the comments in the related CSS file (custom styles file and not the ones provided by boilerplate/JQuery/etc)
    DW uses some comments to identify the page as a FG page. If you happen to remove/modify any of that, DW will stop recognizing it as a FG page.
    The comment block would look similar to:

  • Need help with Fluid Grid Layout and variable column balance.

    I'm using the fluid grid layout.  I have multiple columns that are actually fluid grid layout columns done by Dreamweaver.  I'd like them to extend as high as each other (all to the maximum height of each other) within the same section.  An added catch is that in the desktop layout, I have three side by side under one that takes the whole width of the page.  On tablet size, it's 2x2 in a square grid.  On mobile, they're vertically stacked.  I'm trying to get it so that background colour and/or borders looks decent and is fully balanced, no matter which layout is hit with the fluid layout.  The columns reflow, no problem.  But the height of any background and/or border is variable.
    Any help on fixing this?
    Example at:  https://music2help.thoughtburst.net/
    The example doesn't have borders or colours, as it looked silly unbalanced.  The music2help.css is the only one I'm modifying manually.
    Love the fluid grid layout, but I need a way to make it behave decently with backgrounds/borders.  Any help would be hugely appreciated!
    Thanks!
    mark->

    I tried the solution Nancy posted.  It altered things, but doesn't seem to do the trick.
    Just some quick background.  I did HTML from 1994 through about five years ago by hand in vi on *nix systems.  I learned HTML through 4.01, and never bothered with XHTML at all.  I learned CSS through most of CSS2.  The CSS3 and HTML5 stuff is all new to me, but it can't be that hard.  I'm not exactly a novice in JS (I've done a fair bit of AJAX programming), but it's not even close to my primary language (I'm a Perl guy).
    I'm "stuck on" wanting to use Fluid Grid Layouts.  It's billed as one of the selling points of DW CS6, and I really like the concept and results.  I just want the results embellished a little, namely with sensible identical heights on grid containers set in the same row, so that you can apply background colours, dropshadows, and borders.  That's really all I want to do that it doesn't already do.
    I have a test page at:  http://music2help.thoughtburst.net/ that you can try with your Quick Columns.  I'd be interested to know if you can get it to work.
    Here's the catch, though...  Resize the browser, shrinking it inwards.  (I suggest Firefox, as Chrome only shrinks so far, and you won't get to Mobile width.)  As you can see, on a Tablet, one of the columns that should be equal height actually moves up a row and should be equal height with the row that, on a desktop, would take the entire width of the page area.  So that's like a 4-up output in printing terms.  At Mobile size, the entire thing is vertical, so none of the columns should be resized.
    If your product works and can accomodate these conditions, I think I would be interested in spending the $35 it costs.
    Let me know?  Thanks!
    EDIT:  Changed URL to be non-SSL.  The server has multiple vhosts on it, and I keep forgetting that I don't have a cert on this new one.  Sorry about that.  You can just add anything to one of the the three middle columns, if you're pulling it down to test.

  • Fluid grid layout problem in IE and Firefox

    I just got DW CS6 and decided to try the fluid grid layout. This is my first try at doing it. I have 12 grid columns with 3 divs across the page. Each div spans 4 columns. In Opera, Safari and Chrome, everything works fine. However, in IE and Firefox, the div on the right side of the page drops down under the left div (the middle one and the left one stay where they belong). How do I fix this? The page is still a work in progress (obviously), but the url is http://www.brucebarrdesign.com/index_fluid.htm
    Thanks

    Hi
    I've only just upgraded to CS6 so not tried the feature myself yet, but I like fluid layouts so will be. The three colums all have the css style attributes:  width: 32.2033%; and margin-left: 1.6949%; in fluid_layout.css (1st colmn has a margin of 0).
    Now I don't know how familiar you are with web coding and this isn't the place to try to tutor you in it. The number of digits after the decimal tells me you've let DW assign these % entirely by itself without any guidance. Those measurements all add up a bit tight, to me, to 100% (I've not done the maths). I always allow a little leeway for the difference in the way the browsers calculate things - not so it's visually disturbing - but precisely to avoid this very problem. I'd round the figures down manually in the css styles dialogues or by editing the stylesheet directly.
    width: 32%; and margin-left: 1.5%;  checking the maths so I'd know how much % leeway that leaves.
    Like I said I've not used this feature myself yet so I don't know if there is somewhere to tell DW to round numbers down itself.
    Hope this helps.

  • Problems with fluid grid layout live site only showing phone view in Chrome and Firefox Feb 2015

    Hi all,
    I have done a complex fluid grid layout using DW 2014 CC. The site has now gone live on the web masters server setup.
    Up until now the layout of the site has been working fine and responding to screen size.
    Early this morning in the USA the site stopped working. The layout for some users, not all, is only showing the phone view, and takes a long time to load.
    This is happening in Chrome and Firefox, but IE is displaying the site properly.
    So it looks like the CSS media queries are not working on all browsers.
    I am using BC for the test site, and one user having this problem can see that version of the site OK.
    I noticed that Chrome has done some updates recently Chrome Releases
    Has anyone else come across this problem with Chrome and Firefox with their responsive layouts?
    Thanks for any help given.

    Hi Ben,
    Yes, thanks for this link. The Travel Health Website is one of ours, hosted on BC, and no reported problems so far. We also have another large BC website with ga code in it and users are not reporting problems with it. The Headless Way
    However the problem website is hosted elsewhere on a different platform to BC. We have been developing it for three months now, and no problems so far until yesterday. The problem of the site taking ages to load, and timing out seems to be happening with about 10% of users in the USA. http://www.harrisonassessments.com/
    The web developer found a user in NZ who was experiencing the slow display problem. They looked at the site with Chrome, Firefox and IE. The site would only display on IE. When the developer removed the google analytics code, the site displayed fine on all browsers for the NZ user. We are waiting for users in the USA to wake up and test the site.
    So the problem definitely is related to the ga code and the responsive layout that was done by me in DW2014.1 fluid grid layout. So the related problem of DW2014.1 not being able to load htm files with ga code in them looks to be a good clue to what is going on here.
    As there was a bug report for DW2014.1 and google analytics code made in the other thread, I would be interested to know if that was ever solved.
    It is interesting that you are pushing Bootstrap and Foundation on me. (Big square websites here I come! lol)
    I wonder if DW is going to persist with fluid grid layout then? I certainly hope so, as I have spent 12 months blood sweat and tears learning how to do it in DW.

  • Fluid grid layout lost when closing and reopening Dreamweaver

    I am working on fluid grid layout in dreamweaver cc. I created a new dreamweaver site, created a fluid grid layout page and everything looked and worked as it should. I closed out of dreamweaver and when I reopened it, I could no longer see the fluid grid layout or the fluid grid handles on any of the divs. I also no longer had the little button in the toolbar next to the live button either, to toggle the fluid layout on and off.   I did not move the css or js from where dreamweaver originally stored them.
    Also checked the content and code of my files, everything looks as it should:
    The fluid grid layout style sheet IS attached to the page.
    The Fluid Grid Properties near the top of the style sheet ARE still there.
    I have tried several test sites and as soon as I close DW and reopen it, the fluid grid layout button is gone, as is are the visual aids.  I uninstalled and reinstalled dreamweaver to no avail.
    Very frustrating!
    ANY help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi,
    Thank you for all the responses.  When I was doing the testing, I didn't touch any of the style sheets.  I just created a new site, created a new FGL page, saved everything, then closed out.  When I reopened, the FGL elements were not there.  So in taking Ken's suggestion, I was getting ready to upload the files to see if anyone could see what I was doing wrong.  I had named the file test.html so I did a 'save as', to save it as index.html to make it easier.  Then a strange thing happened.  The new 'index.html' page came in with the FGL elements!  When I looked at the test.html, they still were not there.  In doing additional testing, when I open the first file, whether test.html or index.html, no FGL functions are available, when I open the second one, again no matter whether test.html or index.html, they are.  Getting ready to throw my hands up...  I uploaded everything to:
    http://www.ComputerSecurity.com/fgltest/
    Directly under there is the css file called fgltest.css, along with the boilerplate.css, respond.min.js, index,html, and test.html.
    Don't know what is going on. I am new to fluid grid layouts, but not to dreamweaver, have been using it for years.  Unless someone can see something that I cannot, seems like the only way I can create a Fluid grid layout based on this new information, is to open one page and work on another...

  • Fluid grid layout guides and elements are suddenly gone

    I’m working in Dreamweaver CC and trying to build a fluid grid layout from scratch.  Everything works fine for a while then I notice that suddenly all the grid guides are gone, the icon (next to the “Live” button) that allows me to toggle the fluid grid guides on and off is gone, and when I try to insert a new div tag…(within the "gridContainer clearfix" tag),  the dialog box that opens does not have the option to “insert as fluid element.” Even when I click within a div in my page, the usual options that surround the div are gone as well. It’s as if Dreamweaver doesn’t recognize the page as a fluid grid layout, but when I preview the html, it is still responsive and looks like it is supposed to.
    Does anyone know what could’ve changed that might cause this?
    I even called Adobe and the tech support guy told me they are not trained in CSS and could not help me. I would think Adobe would be familiar with CSS… right?
    If anyone has any suggestions that would be great?

                   Sudarshan Thiagarajan
    The only template files I changed were the main css that I specify when creating a new FG layout.
    I changed this for all three devices within the "style.css" page:
    /* Tablet Layout: 481px to 768px. Inherits styles from: Mobile Layout. */
    @media only screen and (min-width: 481px) {
    .gridContainer {
    width: 100%;  (this is is what I changed on the mobile, tablet and desktop settings)
    padding-left: 0.95%;
    padding-right: 0.95%;
    clear: none;
    float: none;
    margin-left: auto;
    This the dialog box I get when trying to insert a new div (it used to ask me to insert "As a fluid element"

  • Compare the differences between the "Insert" option for fluid grid layouts in DW CC6 2014 and DW6 CC

    Their are differences in the "Insert" menu for DW CC6 2014 and DW CC6.  Where can I find training to explain the differences between the "Insert" menu particularly regarding insertion of fluid grid layouts?

    I would concentrate on learning the version of Dreamweaver that you want to use and not on learning the differences.
    Incidentally, the versions are CS6 and CC.
    As a personal note, I would suggest trying Bootstrap instead of the Fluid Grid Layouts.

    This implies there is something broken in your FluidGrid Layout CSS file.   It  could be something simple like a missing semi-colon or curly bracket.   Run your code through the W3C validation tools below to check for errors.  NOTE:  ignore reported errors in boilerplate.css
