DVD Player linked straight to FCP!?!

Got some actor friends who want a showreel done from their work. All of which is on DVD.
I'm thinking of getting the Philips DVDR 3380 which has a DV in/out. Do you think, from this, that I could capture footage/scenes from their DVD's straight into FCP?
It needs to be of the highest quality but yet as quick as possible to capture into FCP.
I use MPEGstream or DVDxDV at moment but find it takes a long time - especially if I have to 'rip' DVD to hard drive 1st. And also I feel some quality is lost in sound and picture.
Thanks

No, I do not think it will work Kenny. Most likely, it is only DV-in but no outward stream so you will not capture in FCP. Please read the manual for this Philips thing before you buy it for the purpose of capruring DVD content from it. Digital rights management laws make manufacturers protect contents of DVDs that they allow you to play on their machines.

  • DVD Player to FCP?

I want to capture from my DVD player straight into FCP - (I'm putting together actor's showreels so we have no issue with copyright) - I understand I need a converter. In other posts it's mentioned that you can connect your DV device. I can't as my camcorder (Sony HC1 HDR) has no video in.
My question is what device do I need to be able to capture scenes from DVD's from a DVD player to my FCP.
(I've tried a few rip programs and MPEGstreamclip but it takes SOOO long and you can't always rip the DVD's because of their codes etc.)
    Thanks

The cheap way is to ask whoever made the discs if they are macrovision encrypted.
    or
download a copy of mactheripper and see if it detects macrovision on the discs when inserted in your computer
The expensive way is to buy a load of kit and cross your fingers you don't just get a blue screen when you try to digitise the DVD's
NB: MPEGstreamclip would let you open the VOB files on the DVD's and export them as DV footage for Final Cut without the expense of a Canopus box in the first place.

  • Anyone knows a DVD player for TV which can play QuickTime movies /FCP movie

I am trying to find a DVD player for my television which can play a QuickTime or Final Cut Pro movie which is on a DVD. Do you know one ?
    I have a FCP movie (720 x 576 ) transfed to a DVD ( UDF format ).
I have tryed to play the DVD in many DVD plyers, but they all say " unknown file format "

playing them through AppleTV, can do the trick?
yes and no. The AppleTV is a terribly crippled product. Seems to have been launched with only a few of its capabilities enabled and then it sort of got forgotten.
Before investing in an AppleTV box, be sure to read the product reviews from the MAcintosh magazines and especially the PC magazines. You want to get objective information about this weirdly limited box.

  • How do i take a project from FCP to DVD so it plays on a DVD Player

Help, i need to export a project from FCP in a format which will play on through a UK DVD player and TV. What format do i export to ?
I then understand i need to import this into DVD Studio Pro set it up to Loop and then burn to DVD R, is this correct ?
    Help please
    Hillster

    Export QT/Current Settings/Self Contained/Audio and Video.
Drop it into Compressor and choose the DVD preset that matches the total number of minutes of video and also use dolby2 audio.
    Import into DVD SP.
Delete the menu in the graphic view. Set the track to first play and loop or end jump to itself.
Drop the video and audio assets into that track.

  • My project is set up with "rotation" menu intro, video, and then "rotation" on end, however, when you put DVD disc in DVD player, menu does not come up on front end, it goes straight to the video.  Is there some step I am missing?

My project is set up with "rotation" menu intro, video, and then "rotation" on end, however, when you put DVD disc in DVD player, menu does not come up on front end, it goes straight to the video.  Is there some step I am missing?

Open your iDVD project and go into the Map mode.  Made sure the autostart bin on the left is empty.
If you find a video in that bin remove it, save the project as a disk image and check the disk image with DVD Player.  Then you can burn the disk image to disk with Disk Utilitiy at 4x for optimal burning.

  • WWHEN I CONNECT MY VIDEO CAMERA TO THE MAC, IMOVIE DOES NOT RECONIZE IT SO IT GOES STRAIGHT TO DVD PLAYER. I AM TRYING TO DOWNLOAD VIDEO IN IMOVIE. SOME OF THE DISC WILL GO TO IMOVIE OTHERS STRAIGHT TO DVD PLAYER

When I connect my video camera to the mini mac in order to download into imovie it goes directly to dvd player and I can't download into imovie. It does not reconize a camera being connected. This does not happen all the time. Is something wrong with the disc or the camera???

It sounds like it is mistaking the camera for a DVD disk. So my best follow-up question is to ask:
    1. Who is the manufaturer of your camera
    2. What is the model number of this camera.
What happens when you quit DVD player. Does iMovie still fail?

  • Problem to playback 16/9on DVD Player...original export HD to SD 16/9

    Hi,
I need some serious help on that one ( need to complete the project for this Friday..)
Basically I created an edit on FCP on a timeline with the following settings:
    -aspect ratio:HDTV 720p (16/9). As it has been shot with a JVC camera(GY-HD111)on a HDV 720p format..
-Pixel aspect ratio: Square ( no anamorphic)
    -field dominance:none
    -Quictime video settings, compressor:HDV 720p25
then I exported to sequence trough compressor for DVD Studio Pro, under the following settings:
-DVD best quality 90 mn (the duration of the sequence is 10mn)
(making sure the Mpeg 2 format includes a PAL-25 fames-16/9 settings..)
Then, after creating my menu on DVD Studio Pro, again making sure that the following settings were selected:
-Display mode of the menu:16/9 Pan Scan and Letter-box
-Display mode of the attached tracks:16/9 pan scan and letterbox..
I then did a build/format to burn the DVD.
Now the problem that is happening is that for some reason (and i tried on different DVD Players and screens)The DVD players Play the DVD on a 16/9 screen as a 4/3..so it means that when I set upthe screen on a 16/9 format the picture become stretched and on a 4/3 it appears normal but of course the borders are cropped...Now when I build and burn the same project with 16/9 letterbox(only)settings it works fine but the idea is to be able to watch the video as a 16/9 full screen..I really don't understand what is happening..tried many options still not working..Would anyone be abble to help me with this ? (in the settings of build/format there is a tick for lossless linking in destination...would it be related?) I am quite lost on the all thing especially I need to burn the DVD for tomorrow..Please help me!!
    julie

First off, yes, 16:9 Letterbox is the Display Ratio you want to use in DVDSP. Unless you actually do want the edges cropped off (and common request for menus, at least). In that case, select 16:9 Pan-Scan. The 16:9 Pan-Scan & Letterbox choice in DVDSP is not what you'd normally want to use, because it depends on the TV Shape setting on your DVD Player.
Speaking of the TV Shape setting (sometimes labeled as Aspect Ratio) on your DVD Player, make sure the players that are connected to your 16:9 sets are correctly set to 16:9 or Widescreen (manufacturers use different naming conventions).

  • DVD menu title selection on DVD player with DVD's burn from iDVD

Regarding DVDs burned with iDVD 6.0.3, I have burned multiple DVDs with 6 buttons on the main menu page each of which links to a short film. On the menu screen when I push the right arrow button on the DVD remote not all the menu buttons light up. In addition to pushing the right arrow button on the remote, I have to push the up or down arrow button on the remote (to the DVD player hooked up to the TV) to get to some of the buttons in my DVD menu to be selectable. The buttons are arranged by me in a grid sort of pattern. Is there a way in iDVD I can get all the buttons to be selectable using only the right or left arrow keys on the DVD player remote? Do you understand what I am asking?

    Hi powerbookaid
And welcome to apple discussions. It's actually difficult to find standalone versions on ebay and CL / Apple's FCP and DVDSP. I found them myself but it took me a very long time. Not always something you can do overnight. But if you are very patient something will show up eventually.
If you need something now that works (although I advise caution as in backup your dvd or video_TS first) then consider this app for much less money (donationware):

  • Discs made in IDVD causing DVD player to crash intermittenly

    Hiya
I have designed a DVD in iDVD, using a standard theme, Reflection White. There are 6 links to video from the main page, and one link to a slideshow. There are no submenus.
The DVD plays fine in the simulator. My footage is just over an hour, so I've been using Best Quality as the encoder. I then burn a disc image, and use Toast to burn the DVD - at 2x speed - on my Macbook Pro, latest model, running Snow Leopard.
Mostly, these DVDs work fine - though the transitions from the menu page to the videos can be choppy - an image is meant to slide fully off the screen and it sometimes freezes right at the end before going to the video.
However, the DVDs intermittently crash DVD player - almost always at the transitions between the menu and the assets.
It's not the DVD itself - because the same thing happens with the disc image. And even weirder - if DVD player crashes, and then I re-open it, and play the exact same point on the disc image or DVD, it usually plays fine.
The DVD and disc image play fine on VLC (though they tend to have interlacing issues - my footage and format is PAL).
I'm currently experimenting with different encoding qualities, but no luck yet.
Anyone have any suggestions about this problem?
    Thanks

Also, in case it's helpful, the original footage is edited in FCP Studio and output as .mov files, self-contained, and then imported into iphoto and then into iDVD - I couldn't seem to get iDVD to recognise the clips if they weren't in iphoto.
Can it be so that You also Exported with QuickTime Conversion. I don't.
DVDs - Can only be SD-video - there are no HD-version at all any where (any more)
If You need higher quality than Blu Ray is only disk format avail. as I know of.

  • I want to burn a dvd which will play as soon as it is in the dvd player.

    Hi people,
I'm very new to FCP and the world of video and would be very grateful for some help.
I have edited a 6min video in FCP and now want to export it ready to burn onto dvd.
Is the best way to do this through compressor? and if so what settings is good?
I also understand that I have to use DVD SP to burn the dvd right? I don't want any fancy menu pages, just a straight dvd that will play as soon as it hits the dvd player.
Silly question but how can this be done?
Sorry to sound stupid but we all have to start somewhere right?

  • Burned DVD's play on Phillips DVD Player, but not on computer DVD player

    Hey Everyone,
I'm burning my reel in DVD STUDIO PRO 4 via MPEG-2 files exported from FCP to Compressor and then brought into DVD Studio Pro 4.
I select BUILD/FORMAT and go through the steps (insert blank DVD, etc.) and when the DVD is spit out of my macbook pro, it works perfectly fine on a DVD Player, but when I insert it back into my macbok, it spins for about 45 seconds and then spits itself right back out.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?
NOTE: I have successfully burned other DVD's using TOAST so I don't think it's a hardware issue.
    thanks again.

  • Photo Slideshow - to play on TV/DVD player.

I've been trying to create a photo slideshow that I can play on the TV's DVD player.
All I want is just for the photos to appear & me to then manually move them on as & when required. (as they do, if I burn them from the folder straight to the DVD)
When I tried exporting straight from iPhoto to the DVD, the files grew quite spectacularly (am assuming they'd been decompressed to show on screen, then recompreseed to export, hence both losing quality & expanding size [my fault; I said I wanted them high quality ... cos I didn't think I wanted to compress them more!) Result was that I could do what I wanted (i.e. manually advance them), but due to size, nearly died of boredom waiting for them to open!
So, I thought I'd try iDVD. They opened much quicker, though auto forwarded & also wanted to play music. (The latter could be got over by using the mute button - though from a size point of view, clearly better without it)
I can't seem to find any handy hints that tell me how to disable the auto play; is there one particular theme that I need to try to use?
Or, am I better going to my import folder & just dragging those I want to the DVD & doing it that way?? (I import them to the hard drive, before using iPhoto, so have them outside as well as inside iPhoto [am wanting to make sure that if I ever revert to a PC again, i won't have all my photos linked to iPhoto])

All I want is just for the photos to appear & me to then manually move them on as & when required. (as they do, if I burn them from the folder straight to the DVD)
One way of achieving that is to make each photo a separate chapter, but iDVD has a 99 chapter limit.
There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD, but they all have one thing in common: they reduce the quality of the photos to that of a movie still frame and sometimes limit the number of photos you can use.
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico: http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)
Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie 6 as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast, for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!

  • DVD instable (freezes) on standalone DVD player

    Hi,
I have authored a DVD with 2 languages, starting with a copyright and introduction screen (both in one slideshow), then coming to the language select menu, where you can select between Spanish or English. When you click on a button a small script is loaded to set the GPRM 0 to 0 (Spanish) or 1 (English), leading you to the mainmenu of that language. There is a play all button and stories with the seperate chapters and there is a submenu with extras.
When I burn the DVD it plays normal on the Mac, altough I have the feeling it sometimes takes too long to start a video or goto the next menu after clicking on a link, but nothing alarming.
On my standalone player however the DVD sometimes freezes (mostly when chosing the language), and makes some mechanical sounds (loading a part of the disc) when clicking on a button.
I burned the VIDEO_TS map using Toast on both the MacPro and another laptop, to make sure it is not the burner that's broke, but the problem occurs in both cases.
Anyone has a clue on how I can solve this? I have to press a glass master and 500 copies, and want to make sure it plays stable first...
    Please help!
    Ben

    Hi,
I have authored DVDs before, but had never done a DVD in which you first chose the language, after which the menus and extras (slideshows etc.) are in that language. The thing is that you afterwards have to get back to the right menu, which you cannot assign to a button as far as I know. I had my scripts, which I used as you can see in the link) checked by a very experienced DVD authorer and he didn't see any abnormalities. There is no money to put an experienced crew on this at this point.
The strange thing is that when I load the VIDEO_TS folder directly into the DVD player of Mac, it all works perfect. I don't get any errors in the build, no errors in the DVD player, everything works fine.
The problems come when I burn it on DVD. I burned the VIDEO_TS map on DVD by using Toast. Tomorrow I am going to do another attempt to do it directly from DVDSP (build&format), see if that makes any difference. I am also thinking it might have to do with the bitrates? I moved the script to change the GPRM0 after the introduction text (you chose language, this runs the script, which leads you to an introductory text in the form of a slideshow, ending in the mainmenu of the correct language), so now the language choice leads you straight to the slideshow and then to the script.
The point in which it often freezes (not always) remains the same. So it might not have to do with the script. There are around 4hours of video on the DVD-5. I did the mpeg2 conversion in compressor using low bitrates, but maybe I have to set it lower? I don't know if it's possible that a DVD freezes in a menu leading to a slideshow when the bitrate of the video is too high...
    Any ideas?

  • Is there a way to create a slideshow viewable with a DVD player?

Hi there, is there amongst the Apple programs (or else) something that would allow me to show my digital photos on TV with a DVD player? Manually commanded with the remote, or with auto time lapse, fading or transitions?

I tested both Photo Magico and iDVD. Both produce a nice slideshow with good image quality when previewed on the computer. PhotoMagico has some really professional grade blending and zooming effects, and allows placement of multiple sound tracks, which is not possible with iDVD where you just drop one file and it plays in buckle.
The problem with both is that when the slide show is encoded, it looses too much quality! Images loose their detail, their colour depth, and they flicker inacceptably. The worst is with PhotoMagico who sends the already compressed file to iDVD to be compressed again and burnt. The loss of quality from the very neat preview to the resulting DVD is enormous. Sent to Toast Titanium, it's a little better but aliasing effects are still very annoying.
I then tried a slideshow made directly in iDVD. The quality is merely acceptable, still not professional. The images are so compressed that they loose their details, and the edges of the frames and every straight line in the images flicker...
Compressing an original 5 Gb slideshow made of JPEG files to 1,5 Gb seems an enormous rate of compression. Is this the way it is with those programs, or have I missed some settings somewhere? Is there no way to preserve the initial image size when passed to DVD? Alternatively, would the pro version DVD Studio Pro have more flexibillity? It's there on my computer, but the interface is turning me away! ...
    Thanks again for any hints!
    Paul
