DW CS4 Question about Moving Content to New Site

Hi,
I'm supposed to meet with a client later about creating a new website and moving all content from the old to the new.  Right now, I have no idea how many pages the old one has.  I'm assuming the worst, which means I'm assuming there will be a lot of pages.
So after I create a new home page and then a new secondary page, is there some kind of automated procedure Dreamweaver CS4 has that will help me quickly get all of this old content into the new content?  I'm hoping there is because I really want to avoid having to go to each old page, copy the content, and then paste it one by one.  As I think about this, though, if suppose the old site has 100 pages, I guess I'll have to create 100 new secondary pages, then somehow get the content of each of these 100 pages into the new 100 pages.
Any help is appreciated.

I agree.  I'm thinking it will probably be easier to start from the ground up.  My biggest fear is it will be 5,000 or 10,000 pages.  And from what I understand (I'll get more specifics at the meeting) the job must be done by 10/27/10, which leaves precious little time.
I'm meeting with the client this week so as of right now, they cannot show me the existing site until the meeting.

  • Question about moving a site

This isn't a Dreamweaver question, but you guys have been
great help in the past. Perhaps you can help me here.
I have a customer, WC, who had a site through one of these
'template' companies. I have redesigned his site. His domain name
is registered through Network Solutions. If I leave the domain
registration with Network Solutions but CHANGE his hosting company,
will anything (settings, Cnames, MX records, etc) need to change on
their Microsoft Exchange server? They no longer have a network
admin, and I'm not familiar with Exchange. I don't want to risk
crashing their email for a day!
    Thanks!

This will only be true if you are not using an exchange
    server. When I do
this for non-exchange server domains, I always have the
    clients set up a new
email account that grabs incoming email from the new
    mailserver, while they
also continue to get it from the old one. In the 72 - 96
    hours it takes to
be really sure all DN servers have propagated, they will
    receive email from
both locations. After that time, they can then cancel their
    original
hosting account, and remove the associated email account.

No - not if they are using an exchange server.

  • Questions about the content of download meeting recording .zip file

I tried posting this on the resurrected Connect forum, but my Adobe ID wasn't recognized there....
Concerning the files that are included in the .zip file of the meeting recording that can be downloaded:
    1) Is there any documentation describing the files and their contents (i.e. what each file represents, what each XML element and attribute in those files represent)
    2) Are there any files that capture mouse movement on a shared desktop?
    Thank you!

    Hi Sean,
    Regarding your first post:
Thanks Jorma! I don't have access to an FMS build at the moment but I'm quite certain it's there. As for contacting Jaydeep, I am 90% sure he authorized us to broadcast his email on here if folks had questions about the tool, but, in the case that I'm wrong and he didn't - I'm going to double-check first.
    Regarding your most recent post..
"To be clear, the most critical goal I'm trying to accomplish is to create an automated process that will download the recording meeting at its highest quality in a consistent and reliable manner".
I personally believe this is possible; unfortunately, I haven't seen it done yet. If your recording contains:
    - audio
    - a camera feed
    - screensharing
Then I think you might be able to get this going. If it contains shared content, like a shared PPT, this gets trickier.
"To do this, of course, I have to reproduce some of the functionality that Connect provides, starting and combining video and audio streams according to the instructions in the control files."
Exactly right. If your recording didn't contain shared content, then all you've got on your hands are a bunch of audio/video files that you could edit together as you wanted with your favourite video editing tool. If it contains shared content, here's (at a high level) what's happening.
For shared PPTs or FTContent files:
First (for version 9 recordings only), Connect reads the information on the Shared Content's location and SCO within mainstream and indexstream and validates it before loading it. I don't recall this happening to the same extent with version 8 or earlier, but maybe it was. Now, if the content is validated (ie. Connect can find it) the share pod will display as black, if it doesn't, you get an empty pod with an message like "No content is being shared" or something like that.
Connect then looks at the actual FTContent file, and loads the content that is to be shared using the file path and sco ID listed in here. It's important to note that the SCO ID and file path in here will likely not be the same as the original file you uploaded to your room, it's a new SCO id (I believe SCOs of this type are called referenced scos) and new path.
Now...if I was going to build some sort of player which would play all these files in one screen to make a recording...I might not want to use Connect's code here. If you know the file path to the shared content (from FTContent), you could easily view it with the content URL (conveniently also in FtContent). I'm not a coder, but I'm envisioning something like Presenter's GUI where you've got the presentation's content in the main area, and a video file (if there is one) playing back on the side.
Anyways, food for thought if you want to try to go about this. Connect recordings are incredibly complex and they come with a big learning curve, but if you can make sense of them the knowledge is quite valuable.

  • Question about MSN on my new DC G5 and about Burning on Itunes

Hey guys I have a question about ripping music to itunes, I have a Dual Core 2.0 and was wondering if it was normal that my ripping speed is round 14.5 one some cd's and on other cds 27.5 lol i have ripping to maximum, but the weirdest thing is that if i burn data to a CD, it does it faster than ever, compared to my old comp, but my old comp use to rip I tunes some times faster.
how cna i check if my super drive is working fine or is this pretty normal? like DVD's work fast on the comp, and stuff installs pretty fast? so i dont think its a reading problem, and ive done hardware tset and eveyrthing passed
Secondly, my Gf also has a mac and i think she has the smae problem or at least she says she does, and that is when running MSN Messenger i get signed off alot, saying that my network connection has been lost when i run Safari all the time on it, and works perfectly and FAST. is it just that MSN messenger has bugs with mac ? ive heard bout some bugs just dont know if this is one of them

Make sure you have your CPU speed set to highest. Ripping the CD will depend on CPU and condition of the originial disk. Old disks may take longer.
As for MSN? If only you and your GF are the users of MSN you might be better switching to AIM or iChat. Here's a review of different IM applications...

  • Important Question About Moving Files

    Aloha DW Community
I need help/confirmation on this before i do it. I have
inherrited the website from hell; that meaning the folders on my
computer and on the server are very unorganized. There are images
all over the place, in places they just should not be stored. i am
getting ready to switch to a new service provider for the site so i
want to start as fresh as possible. i have already downloaded the
whole site from the server to my local computer. i have gone
through and deleted all the old files that are no longer needed.
now before i upload this site to the new server i want to collect
all the images that are spread about and place them in the same
folder. my question is this - if i gather all the images together
and upload the site, will dreamweaver correct all the link paqths
that have been switched around by me moving all the pictures? i
know DW does this, but i am not sure if it will do it on such a
    large scale.
if you know the answer, please let me know.
    thank you in advance
    all the best to you

Do all of your organizational moves within DW's Files panel.
    You should be
    fine.

  • Clip Notes in CS4: questions about streaming

I've used Clip Notes before with small, embedded files, but this is my first time with a large video that I want to stream on a server. Maybe someone can answer a few questions:
Where do I name the movie file? The export dialog only has a place to name the PDF.
How does the URL setting work? The documentation simply says "This is where your video file is located" but that puts the cart before the horse. How can I specify the name and location of a movie that hasn't been created yet and for which I have no control over the name? The FTP feature works great, but it's for upload only, not for naming.
After exporting the movie and PDF, is there a way to re-generate the PDF w/o having to re-export the movie? I realized I wanted to make some changes to the PDF only (like instructions and URL), and exporting another movie will take time that isn't necessary.
I learned here earlier that only the QuickTime option will provide player controls. But a big .mov requres a streaming server, which I don't have. The .wmv option has the opposite problem. Does anyone know of a workaround (or other method entirely) that will use Flash video? FLV or F4V will do progressive downloading with small file sizes for online viewing.

Where do I name the movie file? The export dialog only has a place to name the PDF.
The name you assign to the PDF is also assigned to the exported movie file, regardless of whether you use QT or WMV. So, if you set the name of the PDF in the Export Settings to "clipnotes.pdf", the video will be either "clipnotes.mov" or "clipnotes.wmv", depending on the format you've chosen.
How does the URL setting work? The documentation simply says "This is where your video file is located" but that puts the cart before the horse. How can I specify the name and location of a movie that hasn't been created yet and for which I have no control over the name? The FTP feature works great, but it's for upload only, not for naming.
See above. Since you now know what the filename will be, you just have to decide where the file will reside on your server, and input this into URL field. Using our example from above, you'd use enter something like "http://www.mysite.com/upload/clipnotes.mov". It's a full URL, with the "http://" needed; just change the pertinent details.
After exporting the movie and PDF, is there a way to re-generate the PDF w/o having to re-export the movie? I realized I wanted to make some changes to the PDF only (like instructions and URL), and exporting another movie will take time that isn't necessary.
Maybe, though I haven't tested this:
    Trash the original PDF file.
Temporarily rename your originally-exported movie file, or move it to a different folder so that it's not overwritten.
Set your export range to one frame, using the same settings and same name that you did for your first export, and restart the export.
Throw away the new movie file, and rename the original or move it back to it's original folder. Since the only connection the PDF has to the movie file is the URL and filename, this should work.
I don't think you need a streaming server; I've tested QuickTime off a regular ol' HTTP server and it works fine. Incidentally, I should add, QuickTime streaming WASN'T working for me previously, at all. I just tried it out, and it would seem that a recent update to Adobe Reader might have fixed the issue. Streaming WMV always worked fine. Curious.
As far as Flash: are you talking about using Flash Video in ClipNotes, or just Flash Video viewing online, in general? At this time, ClipNotes is QuickTime or WMV only, but I wouldn't be suprised if Flash Video makes an appearance in ClipNotes CS5, given the whole focus on Flash in the Adobe ecosystem. If you're talking about general FLV playback, check out the JW FLV Media Player; it's an fairly simple-to-configure Flash Video player that can be embedded into a webpage.

  • Question about moving iTunes Media folder/library

    Hello,
I'm responding to the article listed here: iTunes for Windows: Moving your iTunes Media folder - Apple Support that describes moving your iTunes media folder. I have a massive music library/playlists (over 350 gigs and growing). I'm planning to relocate my media folder to Dropbox because I have ample space there and it will allow me to run my library off of multiple computers (though not at the same time). My question is this: if I follow the steps and consolidate and relocate my library to the new Dropbox folder, will all my new uploads and downloads/purchases/imports also start automatically going to this newly specified location? I want to make sure that it would.
    Thanks

Well the way that Dropbox works for me (just documents and data, not iTunes) is that I have a complete copy of the files in my Dropbox folder on my computer at home, and at work, and in the cloud on Dropbox's servers. Each time I update one of the files it is uploaded to Dropbox and then downloaded to the other client machine. When using another computer I can access my files from the Dropbox web interface, or use the Dropbox app on my iPad. It sounds like you are hoping that you can have all of your files in the cloud, and only in the cloud. I don't think it works that way.
For 350Gb and growing I think that realistically you need to stick with local storage. I clone my library to a 1Tb portable drive which I physically take to and from work, At each location I use SyncToy to synchronize the local and portable copies of the libraries effectively giving me three parallel clones of the library at all times.

  • Question about creating and updating new columns in a table

Hi, I have a couple of questions that would love some answers to
Please bear in min that questions relate to datawarehouse / Just large tables with say about 50 million records
    1) How do you create new columns in a big table
    2) how do you update the new columns
    3) would you create an index on a column in a table with 200m rows when the only two possible values are stored in the column (e.g.Y, N) - give your resason
my aswers to these would be
    1) simple alter table ...
    2) simple update statements
    3) No need to create an index
I might be wrong on these in the context of datawarehouse
    cheers
    css_jay99

If the number of Y vs. N is about 50/50, you only have to parse through 50% of the
overall amount of columns.Fnord. If the ratio of Y to N was 1:20 then the index would be useful for searching for values of Y only. Or if the column is nullable and the bulk of the entries were null then it might be useful. But a 50/50 split? FTS is much more effective.
So, it does depend on the data distribution, but in most cases such an index would never be used (or should never be used).
    Cheers, APC

  • Questions about InDesign CC performance / new computer?

I have some questions and was hoping I could get some answers here.
Due to poor performance in InDesign CC I have considered getting a new computer. I work with around 100 or so images, lots of text, all usually with bevels, shadows and other effects applied.
Simply put, moving anything like an image or text, and dragging around the screen is quite slow. Some move operations take up to 10 seconds before they actually happen. It's disruptive, and my efficiency could be greatly improved if I could get rid of these issues.
I'm wanting to know what I can do to improve this. I've messed around with the display performance settings, but ultimately it's a hassle and somewhat difficult to work with them turned down -- and I really want to avoid doing that.
The system I'm using is a 2008 Mac Pro w/ a dual quad-core @ 2.8GHz, 16GB RAM, and a GTX 285 1GB on Mavericks. I've also packaged up my file and tested it on a 2013 iMac w/ i5 3.4GHz quad, 16GB RAM, GTX 775M 2GB on Yosemite. One CPU core (and only one) was pegged at 100% immediately after moving or doing anything on the page -- even dragging around got it up to 80-90% or more. Performance was a bit better on the newer Mac, but still bad.
What I want to ask is, what's important for InDesign? Graphics power? VRAM? CPU power? Cores? RAM and RAM speed? It doesn't seem to me that InDesign CC uses more than one core. Is there anything I can do to improve this?
    Would greatly appreciate any information!
    Kind Regards

    Regrets…I've had a few…but then again…too few to mention… (sorry, I can't help myself sometimes ).
Anyway, you could start with this: Troubleshooting 101: Replace, or "trash" your InDesign preferences and see if it helps.

  • ANOTHER question about moving referenced files.....

After reading through most of the posts I could find, I am still not finding the answer to my question. I assume it's simple, but I'm a (second-guessing?) LR2 convert, and while I love Aperture's UI, I'm really struggling with file management.
Here's how I like to work. Insert card into reader, and copy the folder (100CANON) to my desktop. Open Aperture, import all the photos from their current location. I like to edit, keyword, rename, etc at this point.
Let's say I had 10 photos in that folder, 5 of my dog, 5 of my car. Here's where my confusion begins:
I want to select the 5 dog photos, and move their physical location to my Pictures/Dogs folder on my hard drive, as well as to my Dogs project in Aperture. I try 'Relocate Master', which moves the file to the desired path on my hard drive. Unfortunately, the thumbnail still resides in the 100CANON project.
So therein lies my question, if I want these dog photos in the Dogs project I now have to drag the thumbnails from the 100CANON project to the Dogs project.
That seems like extra steps, and I can see that causing a lot of confusion, especially when trying to sort a folder with images that need to go in several different projects. I can't help but think I'm missing something obvious - why can't I go into my 100CANON project and drag the thumbnails to the appropriate project, and have the finder path update as well?
Save the "you should let Aperture manage your files" discussion, I'm not interested in that. I need to use referenced masters.

    JF wrote:
what do -you- do with your photos when you import them?
I take the CF card and Finder-copy the contents to a hard drive where they will ideally live forever. Then I eject the CF card (very important error-avoidance step). If the folder contents are not a single shoot at this point from the Finder I review the folder to see if I want the images to comprise more than one project; if so, each project is split into a separate folder with its own name.
Next I back up the folder of images which is labeled something like "101113Buckleymstrs." 101113 is 2010/Nov/13, Buckley is the job/project/event and mstrs indicates those images are the Masters. The backup folder is named "101113Buckley_mstrsbkup."
Note that at this point and forever I can Finder-search for the date or for the job/project/event or for mstrs or for bkup to find images. No Aperture involved yet. Also note that the year/month/day format at the start of the file name properly alphabetizes the folders by date on the hard drives. Most of the files on my hard drives are done that way.
Next I start to import into Aperture by reference into a new Project named "101113_Buckley" using the exact nomenclature used for "101113Buckleymstrs" except without "_mstrs" appended. If Aperture irrevocably lost the link to the masters I could Finder-search on the "101113_Buckley" and find them. At this step before import I review the pix Aperture is set to import and uncheck any obvious duds before clicking to import. The duds remain in the masters and backup folders but I do not care because hard drive capacity is cheap while my time and improved error avoidance have significant value.
I always shoot RAW+JPEG and sometimes I make two Aperture Project imports, one of the RAWs and another of the JPEGs: "101113Buckley_mstrsRAW" and "101113Buckley_mstrsJPEG."
For specific issues like "dogs" I use keywords to create Albums. Or if Buckley is a construction project, for instance, over time multiple Aperture Projects related to the Buckley construction will be created, all of which will point to a Buckley Construction Album. Other albums might be "Buckley Site Work," "Buckley Foundation," etc. Albums are very powerful and take up essentially zero space because they are comprised only of pointers.
I assume you're letting Aperture manage them? I think the issue is that I'm not ready to let Aperture take control of my library.
I manage every image very intentionally, using the tools Aperture makes available.
Do you have random folders strung out all over your Pictures folder with the various imports you've done over the years?
Folders are not random. They are sequential (which is how photos by definition always occur) and they are named identically to the corresponding Aperture Projects as noted above.
It boils down to this for me. I have preferred being able to navigate a file structure within LR to find that one image I'm after. Yes, I realize I could search for it by keyword, whatever, but sometimes I might not even remember how I categorized it. I used to do commercial interior shoots, and had them labeled by address. It's nice to traverse a folder hierarchy if you need to, and it seems like if I turn over control to Aperture I'd be giving that up.
I understand the need some folks have for what I call "film-think" or "folder-think." If you must use folders IMO best is to do it with the Masters before going into Aperture. Within Aperture IMO folder-think is debilitating to optimal use of the images database tools.
I analogize each Aperture Project to a roll of film that occurred at a point in time (an hour or a day or whatever). It gets dated and named in the hard drive archives and in Aperture. Aperture's pointers and key words allow us to create an infinite variety of Albums without relocating the hundreds of original Projects/Rolls of film.

  • Question About Previous iMac vs New iMac Display

I just purchased a refurbished iMac 27" a few days ago. It arrived. I am having trouble visually adjusting to the screen. I've done extensive research on this topic already and have seen others with the same issue. I have heard numerous reasons for the blurry vision, headaches, etc, some attributing to a gap between the glass and the display, or the glare issue. I'm considering downsizing right now to a 21" to see if that will at all help, but I noticed with the new iMacs, they are advertising the following for the display:
"You won’t want anything to distract you from what you’re viewing on these big, beautiful 21.5- and 27-inch displays. And nothing will, thanks to a new display design that reduces reflection by 75 percent. In addition, because the LCD now sits right up against the glass, your content seems to leap off the screen."
    75 percent less reflection.
Full lamination has a second major benefit: It eliminates the reflection of light off the LCD panel and off the back of the display’s cover glass. But we also figured out how to reduce reflection off the front of the glass without compromising color quality. Instead of applying an antireflective coating to the glass in a conventional way, we adapted a process used on smaller surfaces like camera lenses and fighter pilots’ helmets. It’s called plasma deposition, and it involves coating the glass with layers of silicon dioxide and niobium pentoxide so precise and so thin they’re measured in atoms. The result: an astounding 75 percent reduction in reflectivity — and vibrant, accurate colors.
Is this new design made to solve the problem I am facing? Thanks for the help!

I recently had an eye examination done, and it came back perfect. This is the previous monitor I used: http://www.walmart.com/ip/AOC-931SWL/13890785
I get that it's completely different, but it didn't cause me any eye strain at all. I also tried calibrating the color, right now it's really warm, with less blue LEDs, and it's easy on the eyes, but it's definitely, still a problem.
I know that some people don't have any problem with them at all, but some others are having the same issue, but I am just trying to figure out if what Apple has done with the change in the new iMac is their solution to the problem.

  • Question about moving itunes to wd external drive?

i found the page where it says u can move itunes music to external drive but will that include my tv shows also and if so can i delete it from my laptop after i move it to other drive?

\Music\iTunes\ folder is the main iTunes library location. It contains the library files, music files and everything else.
I have all of my music files already stored on an external HD. But for some reason when i moved it all
What exactly does "moved it all" mean? What did you move?
in other words in the old drive I still have the following files:
    itunes library genius
    -itunes library extras
    -itunes library
These three are all the same type of files. I don't know what type of files they are
The iTunes library.itl file is the iTunes database file. Without that, iTunes is empty.
Since i already have all of my music files on my ext. HD can I delete these files without messing anything up?
Only if you want iTunes to be completely empty and you want to start from scratch.
Moving the music file syourself is not the correct way to do it. iTunes will lose everything.
If you want to move everything, copy the entire \Music\iTunes\ folder to a new location.
    Hold Shift and launch iTunes.
Select *Choose library* and select the iTunes library.itl file in the iTunes folder you moved.

I also have quite a few of the yellow document folders:

    -album artwork
Since i already have all of my music files on my ext. HD can I delete these files without messing anything up? Or should I move them at the same time I move the other files?
Thanks so much for your help. I am a total newb at this.
