DW Split View - Design View

When working in DW in Split View, when the user clicks into
the Design View window the view automatically updates the view if
code view has changed.
Can i intercept this? Does it call a specific file or menu
command that i would have access to?
The reason:
We use DW as a stand alone HTML editor and some of the files
we work with are extremely large and each time a change is made in
code view and tusers click into design view it auto updates the
deisgn view and this could end up taking some time. i would like to
manually control this if possible?
Thanks

I think it is probably the type of document you are creating,
for example if
you go to open a javascript or xml or css document, it goes
to code and
grays out the disign and split views. So you might be opening
the wrong type
of document.

  • Is it possible to have the same Split Code/Design view in CS5 that I had in CS3?

I am not a hard coder.  However, like HTML, I could easily edit PHP in CS3 Dreamweaver's Split Code/Design view.  It was more designer friendly, intuitive, etc. I could see/edit/move tables, placed graphics, text, etc.  CS5 doen't allow me to see my PHP pages this way. Can this be fixed to have the same Split Code/Design view?  I would appreciate any assistance you can offer.

To restore the cs3 style horizontal split of code and design views, go to the 'view' drop down menu and untick 'split vertically'.

  • Dreamweaver SPLIT CODE/DESIGN VIEW?

    Hello.
    I'm running Dreamweaver CS3. I have dual 22" monitors and I
want to be able to see the design view and code view of a single
page at the same time vertically not horizontally. Right now when I
hit the SPLIT the windows are on top of each other. Is there a way
to make them beside each other or apart or something?
I also tried running two instances of Dreamweaver but that
didn't work either. This really sucks because I want to be able to
see my full design while I edit the code/css.
    Thanks

    Not that I know of.
More people are using large monitors and dual monitor setups
    these days,
so vertical split view is a feature that is likely to be
    increasingly
requested. Why not submit a feature request to the
    development team?

  • How to center page in Split and Design view?

When I look at my template in Design or Split View, it is flush right on my screen with a top margin of 20 px or so. But when I check it in Live View, or when I preview it on Firefox/Safari/Chrome/Opera, it is centered and flush against the top of the screen.
I should add that the template was fine in Design and split, until I started mucking about the a spry menu. My page fell apart, I deleted the spry with plans ot start over. But then I discovered my template flush right (in Design and Split, anyway).
Can anyone please tell me how to correct this? I suppose it's more of a nuisance than a tragedy, as long as the page is centered when it goes online. But it is a nuisance to work on the right side of the screen.

I just started having an extremely annoying issue in DW8-XP.
The code view is completely messed up. I can switch to code view,

If I open a new file (like css file) in code view, I see a ghost of

  • Can't see design view after changing connections file from localhost to a remote host & back again

I was using localhost to test files before changing the connections document over to a remote host, since I couldn't get dreamweaver to connect to the remote host, I changed back to localhot. My files are all .php files. This is a dynamic site. After I changed my connection back to my local host my design view no longer works. It's competly grey with 3 small icons at the top on the left. I can view in live view and I can view in the browser. But no longer in design view after being able to for 6 months. The 3 icons are a hard drive case, a document, and a link symbol . When I click in code view the design view turns grey when I click in design view it turns white. I am using wamp for the localhost, Windows XP home, Dreamweaver CS5. Can someone please tell me how to go back to design view. This happens with any & all files including non dynamic .html files. Also having a problem connecting to my remote host. using godaddy, and they have tried with me for 2 hours to connect, I just keep getting password is incorrect. Thank you for any help, Stacey

I would also recommend clearing the Site cache, which may help with the connection failure. To do so, choose Site > Advanced > Recreate Site Cache.
After doing so, be sure to go back into your Site Setup, and make sure the FTP address, user name, and password are all correct. (Click the Test button in there to verify.)
If that doesn't help with getting connected to your server, you might try an alternate FTP client (e.g. FileZilla) to just make sure you are entering the right connection information. It could be that GoDaddy is having some issue, or maybe you just mistyped something (I know I do this often when I type too fast).
As for the issue with Design View, try clearing the Dreamweaver cache. Instructions are here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/494811
You might also try toggling the location of Design View. That is, when in Split View, choose View > Design View On Left. Then, choose that menu option again to reset the location back to the right.
Resetting the workspace might also be recommended. Window > Worksapce Layout > Reset 'name of current workspace'

  • My 'Design View' has stopped working in CS5. How can I get it functioning again?

I've looked through the existing topics and couldn't find an answer.
I hadn't made anything in DreamweaverCS5 for a a few months, but when I went today to create a new HTML document, I couldn't do anything in 'Design View' . I have not changed anything with the program at all. I still checked Edit>Preferences>File Types/Editors and .html is not listed for 'Code View'. The 'Split' and 'Design View' buttons are clickable, but when I click in 'Design View' the Properties Inspector grays out. I also can't type anything into the field. There are two icons at the top, one for the meta tag and the other for the title tag in the 'Code View'.
I haven't the slightest idea as to why this is no longer working. This has never happened before. I did nothing but create a blank document. I'm on a PC. Any help with this would be extremely appreciated.

And just like that, I figured it out.
For some reason, the 'head content' had overtaken the 'Design View'. I clicked the down pointing arrow on the grayed out Properties Inspector just to try something else, and also to see what was hidden. When I did that, the top part of the 'Design View' peeked out a little from under the 'head content' area. I enlarged the 'Design View' field and realized what was going on. I still have no idea why that happened on it's own since I've never enlarged the view for 'head content' before. I actually usually don't have it enabled. I guess it's like a lot of people complain, Design View is quite buggy.

  • File will not open in Design View

I needed to add new file types, which I have done before with CS4 and CS5, but it doesn't seem to be working with CS6. I've followed the instructions here: http://helpx.adobe.com/dreamweaver/kb/change-add-recognized-file-extensions.html
but after restarting Dreamweaver CS6 the 'Design View' tab is still greyed out and I can only view in code view. What am I missing?

David: the filename(s) are not listed in the 'Open in code view' panel.
Okay, 6 hours later I decide to do what the instructions said NOT to do. Which is alter the exentions.txt file and the MMDocumentTypes.xml file directly IN the Dreamweaver CS6 folder. (original instructions said NOT to change them there because the program doesn't look there first. It looks in the User/Library/blah/blah folder.) Well, how about that, I change the files directly IN the Dreamweaver CS6 folder and now my files are available in 'Split' and 'Design' views. This should be helpful to others trying to add new extensions to their list.
Please let someone know they should change your instructions on the Dreamweaver website.

  • Design view goes blank [CS3]

I usually work with split code + design view
When working with certain files and make a change in code
view(or in a linked .css), and then click in Design view, the
Design view goes totally or partially blank. Either nothing appears
at all, or the content appears up to some point, and the rest up to
    the end is blank.
Once this happens, there is absolutely no way to make the
'hidden' content visible. Tried to switch to another file, to
select code in code view, to edit in code view or even in design
view - no go. I have to close / open the file, and then it appears
normally. But indeed I can't do this every minite, is there some
    solution known?
There is no stuff with visibility set to hidden or alike, if
the content is displayed - it's displayed correctly. Also looks OK
    in all major browsers.
    Thanks

This often happens when you have added such garbage code that
    DW cannot
figure out what to do with it. For example, adding a
    <body> or </body> tag
in the middle of a page can do such things. Might that be
    what's happening
    for you?

  • Includes no longer displaying in design view

Somehow my #includes are not showing in split or design view.  Example: <!--#include virtual="/includes/topNav/topNav_housing.asp"----------->  This would be my header and navigation file.  In the past it showed in design view right at the top of the page. Now not displaying.  I know design view is not accurate and not neccessary, but really bugging me that I can't see the whole page anymore....  Side Note:  my home page index file located in the root folder DOES display this info. All files located down a level do not.
These have been showing for years, now in CS5 and previously in version 8.  I didn't change any settings, they just stopped showing today. The pages work properly online. I use this code snippet for a variety of objects per page.  All .asp files.   I feel like something stupid accidentally got changed.  Just not sure what.  I have found lots online about initial set-up errors, but mine was working.
    advice?

Thanks Nancy...   Here is what I found. Maybe you (or someone could shed some light on this for me).
Here is what is placed in all of my documents:
    <!--#include virtual="/includes/topNav/topNav_housing.asp"----------->
The home page that displayed properly in Dreamweaver looked like this:
    <!--#include virtual="/includes/topNav/topNav_home.asp"-->
Removing all but two of the dashes as the end of the code snippet fixed the problem and the Header started to disply in Design view.   I am not a programmer, and my HTML/CSS knowledge is self taught, but this code has been in place from a previous designer for years.  Does it make a difference?  What could have changed?   I have thousands of these pieces in my site, I guess I need to fix them all.....

  • Design view is truncated

I did something (I don't know what!) and somehow caused the design view to cut the page down the middle so I can only see the right half. How can I get it back to normal so I can see the whole page in the design view. I'm using DW CS4.

    Thanks Jon,
It stays truncated whether it is in split view or design view. I shut down DW and re-opened and it stayed messed up. I toggled Split and Design views and tried changing the page sizes. I probably mistyped a short cut and somehow floated the page to the left. But I don't know how to get it back to normal. It is probably something stupid. I'm going to shut down the computer and reboot to see if that does it. I'll let you know. Otherwise, any ideas would be welcome.
    John
FOUND IT. I added a style sheet to the page and it messed up the design view. (???) Other pages aren't doing it. When I deleted the style sheet it went back to normal. Since I just have to add a little CSS so I will embed on page and not add style sheet and that should be OK.
    Thanks Jon.

  • Dreamweaver cs6 crashes when clicking design view

    Help!
I have been researching and trying a number of things to get my Dreamweaver program to work. It was working yesterday and then it decided to stop letting me go to the split or design view.
I work on a Macintosh--MacBook Pro running Lion. I did locate my preference files and deleted those as usual, but I have never had this type of problem with an Adobe product. If you have some ideas, let me know. I appreciate the help.
Would it be a good time to upgrade to Mavericks?

    Hello MacRatclic,
Can you please provide more information listed below. Its difficult to understand the issue from the thread description.
    - Platform & version
    - Dreamweaver Version
    - Is the issue specific to a certain page. If yes, can you please provide a document sample to reproduce the issue.
    - Is the crash reproducible by clicking anywhere in Design view or is it restricted to certain element.
    - Crash Report would help us to analyse the root cause.

  • Getting DW to show files in Design View

We have a set of HTML based templates that we use that all have the extension .vm
These files are used in an internal system, that allows us to swap out information when they are accessed.
When I open the files in dreamweaver it gray's out the split and design view buttons.
If i change the extension to .htm, the buttons are accessable.
There are a ton of these template files, is there anyway to get DW to always turn on the split and design buttons, so i do not have to change the extension of the files each time I need to access them?
I have already added them to the list of extensions in the preferences tab, but this only allows DW to open the files, and does not seem to enable the split and design buttons
    Thanks,

ok .. so I opened the extensions.txt file .. added the line
    VM: VM Files
removed .vm from the 'open in code view' list under preferences
restarted DW, and The buttons are still grayed out.
I have also tried adding VM to the first line of the extensions.txt file designating it as an HTML file. Still nothing.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks,
    ***EDIT***
I was finally able to get it to work using that url you provided.
I have to say .. this is most un-user friendly way to go about this I have ever seen.
    thanks though for your reply

How can I hide content in design view within Dreamweaver?
I have a tabbed content menu that uses some javascript. Everything looks great in Live view, but when I go to design view, all the content goes way beyond the div. How can I make it to where I can hide the content in that div in design view or wrap it completely inside of there? It's really hard to explain which is why I provided some pictures!

Humm....... you want to hide it in Design View whilst working on the rest of the site?
If that is the case set the menu container <div> to display: none; -
    <div id="menu" style="display: none;">This is the content menu</div>
Then either set it to display: block; when you're ready to view it live or remove the style completely.
