DW8 is, essentially, useless.

Here at work I am, sadly, forced to use Dreamweaver 8.0.2 on
my Mac to manage a website, a site that contains about 7,000 or so
individual static pages and files. Using Dreamweaver to manage the
site is about three crashes away from being a true exercise in
futility. And these problems aren't exclusive to me, either -- my
co-workers experience many of the same problems on both Macs and
PCs day in and day out.
Perhaps these problems have been solved by others. Reply if
you know how to work around any of these annoying bugs:
1. Dreamweaver creates garbage files constantly in my local
site folders. They have names like "35770a1d" and appear to contain
the HTML from files I edit. I then have to go in constantly and
clean out these garbage files at the end of the day.
2. Dreamwaver crashes constantly. As in every single hour.
It's almost like clockwork, leading me to believe it's a memory
leak or buffer overflow of some sort.
3. Dreamweaver constantly bumbles the locked/unlocked status
of files on the remote server over FTP. Just when I think I notice
a reproducible pattern to this problem, it changes itself and I
have to go into the server and manually fix the permissions on the
files.
4. Synchronizing the site takes an exponential amount of
time. If I want to synchronize 100 files, it takes about 20
seconds. If I want to synchronize 1,000 files, it takes about an
hour. If I want to synchronize my entire site, it takes an unknown
amount of time. I've left it running for 10 hours before, and it
didn't even come close to finishing. The process slows down with
every folder it looks through, compounding the problem.
5. The user interface is awful. I won't even get me started
on this one -- it would take me a week to document the laughably
elementary UI problems in DW8. A company that made such wonderful
products as Fireworks and Flash should be ashamed of this travesty.
6. I can't use "Design" view on any HTML page in my site.
Period. The buttons are grayed out and I can't use the design view
(not that I'd want to let DW destroy my carefully crafted HTML and
CSS, anyways). Sometimes it'd be nice to preview my code without
having to:
* Save
* Switch to site window
* Right-click on file and "Put"
* Load the page in a browser
Those are the first 6 glaring problems that came to mind,
anyways.
Now that I've vented, what bugs/problems with DW8 annoy you?
Let's hear 'em! (And I don't mean minor trivial things. I mean
things that are a hamper on productivity or things that make DW8
nearly useless -- a true waste of money.)

This is not DW's doing. It's OSX's Spotlight. Configure it to
exclude your
site directories.

It's a system/environment/configuration problem, most likely.
I run DW 24/7
on XP, Vista, and OSX, and can't recall the last time it
crashed on any of
them. Can you tell me how your sites are configured with
regard to your
local hard drives and your network?

Wow - I have really never seen this happen - I can only guess
that someone
is not adhering to the policy. It is true that DW's
checkin/checkout is a
primitive solution at best, but it is certainly more reliable
than this....

Sorry - I can't address this. My largest site is only 1000 or
so files, and
I never synchronize....

Not much to go on there - but if you want to make
constructive comments, you
can do so here -

Do you have specific examples, though?

Why? What is it about your pages that is so unusual? Do these
pages
validate?

Why not just F12?

I've used DW since v2, and frankly, there's not much that
really annoys me.

When Time Machine is backing up, my computer is so slow that it is essentially useless.  Backups occur irregularly, and take a long time.  How do I get Time Machine to work properly?

    Hello,
Have you verified both drives in Disk Utility?
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • With the demise of MobileMe is iWeb essentially useless now?

My personal website has been down since MobileMe went away.  I just renewed my domains on GoDaddy and need to be able to publish my site but it appears iWeb can't publish to anything but an FTP server or a personal folder.  What to do now?

    Hi there,
You can still publish your site. You either need to change your settings in iWeb to publish straight to your GoDaddy FTP account (by entering the FTP address, Username & Password) or, save your website to a local folder & then publish the files to your GoDaddy account via an FTP Client such as CyberDuck.

  • Safari and Google Maps are useless

Safari and Google Maps invariably quit and return to the home screen. They are essentially useless. I tried to empty the cache and history...no luck. I then tried a reset and when it restarted got a message to please connect to iTunes. iTunes told me my phone needed to be restored. A progress bar indicated it was extracting some software and then it was preparing the iPhone for restoration. After some time I got an unknown error message (1603) that said it was unable to restore. I am looking at it as it sits uselessly in the dock with nothing but the apple icon showing. Has anyone experienced this? Does anyone have a solution? Should I just return it to the Apple Store.

James, I'm sorry to say buddy, but you might just have a defective product. If restoring doesn't work there really isn't much more you could do. You can ether wait for the next update, and hope that would fix it, or just take it back to the store and exchange it. You have 30 days from the day of purchase to return the item. Thats my recommendation. GL

  • Help! Sophos popup leads to generally useless computer...

Hi all! I have a pretty strange situation going on on my parents' computer.
My mom claims that she didn't install Sophos (an anti-virus program) on her iMac, yet when she logged onto the computer today, a window saying "Threat detected by Sohpos Anti-Virus" popped up. I closed it, and it continued to pop up. I then deleted the Sophos app from Finder. I then tried to open Safari, and a window came up saying "You can't use this version of the application Safari with this version of Mac OS X. You have OS X 10.6. The application requires 10.6 or later," which made very little sense to me. I got the same notification for the Mail app, and various other applications. When I tried to open Disk Utility, I got the same error. I then restarted the computer in Internet Recovery Mode, and repaired the disk and its permissions. Still nothing. I then rebooted in Safe Boot, and I didn't get the Sophos popup, but the computer refused to connect to the Internet, claiming there was no airport card installed.
The virus detected by Sophos is "mal/nix-A," which when I looked up, apparently usually comes from a certain email. I looked through my mom's email on my computer, and couldn't find anything fishy. I'm very confused by what's going on, and my parents' computer is essentially useless as of now. Any help or guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks!

actually i believe it is part of the installation disc. this article talks about it a little. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2956
but anyways, WOW! my computer is on crack... after trying everything i could think of for the last couple of days, i decided not to touch it tonight after i got home from work, instead i got on here to write apple a message asking for help, and while i was writing that message i decided i should turn the computer on to make sure i had everything it was saying word for word.... and when i got to destination selection, its allowing my hard drive now! which is weird, cause i didn't do anything different to it, and i didn't touch it before work and it didn't work last night. odd. but it is still installing as i type this.... hopefully no install problems....
anyways, i thank you all for your help and ideas. they were much appreciated.
and on a final note, i am going to leave this thread as unsolved, because i did not actually find out what the problem was. however i believe that the "volumecheck tool error" lies with the install disc.

  • I record a midi keyboard track and it sounds fine as Im recording it, however, it won't play back in time no matter what I do, seems awfully useless to have all these "great software instruments" and not even be able to use them, one problem after another

I record a midi keyboard track along with a song, it sounds great, then, when i go to mix, playback, the midi track is behind the beat and out of sync.. i've tried every setting I can think of.. the strangest thing is that I've used this exact keyboard in the past with this exact computer, running the same version of logic pro, and it worked fine, now it just doesn't work.. it seems an awful waste to have all these "great software instruments" but they are essentially useless now... it is beyond frustrating to have this so-called "great technology" that doesn't even work and to spend more time TRYING to get it to work than actually doing some work with it...

After re-reading the first post, I don't think it would be quantize, either, sorry about that.
There are a couple more places to look:
Look at the highlights, one is for track, one is for region.  Notice how I have it on MIDI thru (top part).  That has a delay value.  When you select a region, you can have a different value there, as well.  Also, the Track part has a place with a delay value.  These are three delay values that are in addition to the audio preference Recording delay.

  • IPhoto and Photoshop CS3 Problem

I have been downloading my pictures into iPhoto and editing them in Photoshop(CS3) now. As long as I was shooting jpeg, I would just hit Save in Photoshop and the edited picture would show up in my iPhoto application, in in "modified" in iPhoto library.
Since I got Photoshop CS3, I have been shooting a lot more RAW. RAW images, saved TIFFS, don't seem to get saved to iPhoto application, just the Pictures/iPhoto Library folder. And I am noticing that edited pictures don't automatically go into modified, but stay in the originals file.
I am also noticing that even jpegs do not automatically get saved to the iPhoto application. They too open up the save to window for Pictures/iPhoto Library. All this since CS3.
So only the original files downloaded from my CF card are in iPhoto. I feel that something is wrong here. I should be able to have my edited files show up in my iPhoto application without re-importing them.
I tried a trial of Aperture, but my DT graphics card and processor can't handle the application. But that is not the point. What has happened that iPhoto has become essentially useless to view my modified photos?

    Birgit
This may be the source of the issue.
Bridge is NOT Photoshop, but an alternative file organiser. So when you set Bridge as an external editor you're really sending the pics to another organiser, not an editor. Presumably from there they go to Photoshop and are then saved back... to Bridge, not iPhoto.
Try setting PS as the editor not Bridge and see does that make a difference,
Also, when you send pics to an external editor, only a maximum of 4 will go. So you can only work in batches of four.
    Regards
    TD

  • Shortcuts within applications. How limited are they?

I'm looking for shortcuts within applications e.g. to navigate through toolbars. Do they exist?
I'm used to using the keyboard without a mouse. How can I get to insert bullet points into a Word document, for example, without having to mouse through menus. The same with Excel, how can I insert or delete rows, for example without stopping what I'm doing and picking up the mouse.
I know there are some shortcuts, but these seem to be really limited compared to the functions I'm used to being able able to access without changing tools for keyboard to mouse. I don't even have a mouse, just a trackpad. I haven't used a mouse for years, and I've learnt to shortcut nearly everywhere in Windows, just using the trackpad occasionally. Shortcuts are really much quicker and do not interrupt your workflow like using a mouse.
Another example would be using the alt key to jump to the file menus, or highlight the shortcut keys available on any given window or information dialogue.
Are Apple really behind in implementing this kind of convenience, or is there something I'm missing?
    Thanks in advance

The only way I know to do what you describe, that can work in all applications, is to get a third-party macro-creating utility.  I know of two that work on Mac computers.  One (whose name I don't recall right now) is free of charge but hard to use, and not very powerful; it cannot override a shortcut put in the application by the software company, for example making the F1 key do something other than open a "Help" screen.  The other is called QuicKeys.  You can download it at no charge and use it for 30 days while you decide whether to buy it.  After that, it becomes essentially useless unless you buy an activation key (for about $60 U.S.).  I could barely work without it, because I—like you—use keyboard shortcuts to do all sorts of things (hundreds of times in a typical day).
I'm assuming that you have already tried System Preferences--> Keyboard & Mouse --> Keyboard Shortcuts tab, which can do some of the things you describe.  It is part of the Mac operating system.  It is a bit tricky to figure out, but can be helpful if you don't want to buy (and learn how to use) a third-party utility for this purpose.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Late 2011 Experiencing Significant Slow Down After Boot Camp Installation

Okay, so today, after installing Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro via Bootcamp Assistant, I experienced significant performance slow down (fans going at full blast, applications opening after extended periods of time, keystrokes not being registered) when I returned to my OS X partition/second hard drive. I have dual hard drives, one of them being a Samsung 256 GB SSD with OS X Mavericks and the other being my original 500 GB HDD, divided into a 250 GB OS X Mavericks partition and a 250 GB Windows partition. I have the SSD set as my startup disk and I have it located in the main HDD bay. I moved the old HDD into a caddy and placed it where the optical drive normally should be.
After multiple failed attempts to install Windows via USB and Bootcamp Assistant, I decided to reinstall my optical drive and use a Windows installation disk. This attempt proved successful, and I was able to install Windows 7 onto the 250 GB partition I had created for it on the 500 GB HDD. After completing basic setup of Windows, I removed the optical disk drive and reinstalled the SSD and the HDD into their original spots (SSD in the main HDD bay, HDD in the caddy where the optical drive normally is).
After completing this tedious process, I booted my Mac back up using the SSD. However, I noticed something was wrong when the login screen, apps, and nearly everything else on my desktop had slowed to crawl. I decided to check my Activity Monitor to see what the problem might be. Activity Monitor told me that the task "kernel_task" was taking up anywhere from 200-600% of my CPU, which explained the slowdown in performance. I looked around to see if there were others with the same problem as me, and I found that Spotlight Indexing might be an issue, with a potential remedy being move my Bootcamp Partition into the Privacy section of Spotlight under System Preferences. After doing that, I experienced no increase in performance and everything was still going very slowly.
The next step I took was to see if booting into Safe Mode would help the issue. After booting into Safe Mode on my SSD, I noticed that things were back to their normal speeds, with applications opening at the speed they should be and keystrokes being registered instantaneously. However, the fans were still going and had not shut off once booting into Safe Mode. In addition, I checked Activity Monitor and the "kernel_task" in question was no longer taking up massive amounts of the CPU.
At this point, I don't know what to do and I need help in restoring my Mac to original speeds. I may end up deleting my Boot Camp partition as a last measure if all else fails, seeing as I installed Windows in the first place for running a few programs and games that I can live without. However, I'd prefer to not have things come to that and fix things before deleting the Boot Camp Partition. I've heard that if everything runs normally in Safe Mode, then the issue is third-party software. Is this true?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am writing this from the MacBook in question in Safe Mode because it's essentially useless in normal SSD operation.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(Software Hardware Memory Diagnostics Power FireWire Thunderbolt USB Fonts 51 4 1000 25 5120 KiB/s 1024 85 \\b%% 20480 1 MB/s 25000 ports     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • In Object Properties dialog box, modify "tab path"...

For FrameMaker versions up to and including 8 (and I suspect 9).
Select a graphic, then click in sequence
ESC g o to open the
Object Properties dialog box. By default the dialog box opens with the insertion point in the
    Width text entry area.
Now press TAB four times: The insertion point moves sequentially to the
    Height,
    Top,
    Left, and then
    Color text entry areas.
I wish the last movement, to the
Color text entry area, was replaced with movement to the
Percent text entry area. This would enable me to use the keyboard to efficiently configure the size, position, and scaling of a graphic.
As it is, I virtually never need to select the graphic's
Color text entry area and the movement of the insertion point to that essentially useless tool drives me crazy: It makes me TAB all the way 'round the dialog box or grab the pointing device to get it to the
    Percent text entry area...
    Cheers,
    Riley

Odd... What does your properties dialog look like? Can you post a screenshot of the dialog box? Also, what version of LabVIEW are you running?

  • OfficeJet 4315 no longer works after Win 7 and Office 2010 service packs applied

I've used OfficeJet 4315 on a Toshiba Satellite with WinXP (SP3) and Office 2003 and been delighted with the printer.  I recently migrated to a brand-new Acer Aspire with Win 7 and Office 2010 (home & student ed.)  At first, the 4315 worked well--in fact, all I had to do was plug in the USB connection and the in-OS drivers installed automatically.  However, something has now caused the printer too be essentially useless!  I think it happened after I applied SP1 to Win 7 and/or the service pack to Office 2010.  I can no longer print Word files (.doc or .docx), Excel spread sheets (.xls or .xlsx), PDFs, Web pages, or even e-mails,  The only things I can print are .txt files or equivalent and .jpg files or equivalent.  I've tried deleting and reinstalling the printer (including deleting the drivers and reloading them from Windows Update).  I don't believe I should have to replace a perfectly good printer just to support Windows 7 and Office 2010.  I NEED HELP URGENTLY with this problem!  If anyone has any knowledge or ideas, I'd be forever in your debt.  (HP, I'd even pay to get the help I need on this one!!)  TIA.

    Hi,
Based on your description, my understanding is that the PDF files cannot be checked out to local drafts folder after Office 2013 is installed.
Did this issue occur with Office files?
I recommend to check if the Office files can be checked out to local drafts folder with Office 2013.
And it is recommended to use Office 2010 with SharePoint 2010 for best practice.
    Thanks,
    Victoria

  • How can I connect ATV to my Bose Lifestyle 8 system?

How can I connect my 3rd generation Apple TV to my home theater BOSE Lifestyle 8 system (1999)?
In the BOSE reciver there isn't optical output just analog.
what the solution for this issue?

The problem is with the Bose bar and not the Apple TV .  I have confirmed that sound is Transmitted from both the HDMI output and the Optical (Toslink) output simultaneously from the Apple TV
The BOSE bar AUTOMATICALLY selects the best quality signal . You can't select it.   So HDMI  will win and once the TV is off,  audio will not work.
The AUX port is essential useless as Bose told me its for "Redundancy" and you can't "select" to use it.
What you need is an optical selector .  I bought this one for around $20 from amazon .  I like it because its black and you can connect up to 4 devices.
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005BXVB3G
Because the Bose bar inputs from the Optical out on the back of the TV,  have it now go through the selector.  Your Apple TV can be input 2 .
You can now watch TV or Apple TV normally but if you want to still hear the music from Apple TV ,  manually change the selector to input 2 on the optical selector device .  When you turn off TV it will still play sound coming from apple tv's optical output .
Works perfectly !  Cheap work around .  Unfortunately for such an expensive Bose device you shouldn't  need to buy "work arounds" but I'm very happy with the sound quality and I'm a Bose believer .   So it was worth doing .

  • How to switch iphone to new icloud account

Thanks in advance for any advice you may offer. I bought my wife a new ipad for her birthday. I asked her whether she had an icloud account and she said she hadn't. I set one up for her. Her ipad connected without a problem. When I went to set up her icloud on her iphone, I found that she did in fact have a previous icloud account. I was able to figure out what her password is but that doesn't help her now because her lap top and ipd are synced to a different icloud account. I haven't been able to find a way to connect her phone to the new account. Is there a way to do this? If we are unable to do so her phone is essentially useless apart for making phone calls.
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Peter

To change her phone to the other iCloud account, you first need to save any photos in her My Photo Stream album that are not already in her Camera Roll album or backed up somewhere else.  To do this, open the My Photo Stream album on her phone in the thumbnail view, tap Edit, then tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share, then tap Save to Camera Roll.
After doing this, go to Settings>iCloud and tap Delete Account.  If all her iCloud data is already in the iCloud account she is moving to, you can choose Delete from My iPhone when prompted.  (If there is data on her phone that is not in the other iCloud account that she is moving to, choose Keep on My iPhone.)  Next, enter the Apple ID and password accociated with the other account in Settings>iCloud and tap Sign In.  She can then turn on syncing for Contacts, Calendars, etc., and if prompted, choose Merge.

  • How to change background color in small windows?

    MacBook Pro, OS 10.6.3, G5.
When I open an image to edit, the adjustable small windows, e.g., Navigator, size, opacty, all have a dark gray background that makes reading the number almost impossible.  Surely I am doing something wrong but I'll be danged if I can figure out how to change that background.  In fact, in the individual preferences also, e.g., Units & Rulers, the "adjustable" small windows (Column Size: width, gutter; New Document Preset Resolutions: print resolution, screen resolution) are also very dark.
I have used Elements for Windows for years and have just received Elements 8 for Mac and this is extremely frustrating.  I appreciate your help and your patience as I try to sort this out and solved

I greatly appreciate the two responses above. However I think I may be out of luck. The first response doesn't seem to include the Mac operating system, which I am using, and the second may not have understood my problem - but I could not figure out how to follow the advice given using "preferences" to even try it. It appears to be a matter of terrible user-oriented design by Adobe. I have in fact started again using my earlier version on my old XP Windows machine, as my brand new version is essentially useless to me - I simply can't read the dark grey numbers on the dark grey "windows".

  • How to Change Carrier for Package Tracking in Apple Mail 8?

When I receive a shipping confirmation email, Apple Mail automatically detects the tracking number and creates a hyperlink to USPS tracking. This is wonderfully convenient... if you live in the USA.
I live in Canada, so most of my packages are shipped with Canada Post. Naturally, USPS doesn't recognize the tracking number, so this feature is essentially useless. Is there any way I can change the carrier to Canada Post, or preferably to a universal tracker such as www.packagetrackr.com?
I was hoping Apple would address this with the release of Yosemite/Apple Mail 8, but I can't seem to find a solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you're talking about the sender name (the name that appears on the From line when you send email), to change it on your Mac Mail, go to icloud.com, sign into your account, open Mail, click the gear shaped icon on the bottom left and choose Preferences, go to the Accounts tab and enter the name you want to use in the Full Name field and click Done.  Then quit Mail on your Mac (Command-Q) and re-open it.  Your new From name should now appear in the drop-down list when you compose a new email.
