Dynamic VLAN/SSID assignment using 4402/MS IAS

Greetings,
In short we have a WLC4402 (50 AP license) and approx 30 1252s LAPs in place. Right now we have three VLANs/SSIDs in place - one for admin, one for teachers and one for students. The WLC uses a MS Windows 2003 server running IAS for PEAP authentication. The clients are Windows XP, the SSID is entered manually based on "pre-designation" of the laptop's "type" (either admin, teacher or student).
This is working fine. However more and more frequently our users have been "sharing" laptops so a student may need to use a teacher's laptop and vice-versa. In short we would like to use dynamic VLAN/SSID assignment so that if a student does have a teacher's laptop the "student" VLAN/SSID would be assigned to them when log in (and the proper ACLs, QoS policies, etc would be applied)
We have found documentation on how to perform this with an ACS but is there anything available for this configuration with a MS IAS server.
Any input/information would be greatly appreciated.
Joe

  • Dynamic VLAN/SSID assignment w/IPv6

I have followed the answer in this discussion which instructs on how to get Dynamic VLAN/SSID assignments using WLCs + MS IAS:
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/339396
This works great for IPv4.  This does not appear to work for IPv6.
I have CT2504 WLCs running v7.0.116.0 and AP 3502s.  I have a Windows 2003 IAS working for 802.1x authentication using PEAP and per-user/group dynamic VLAN/SSID assignments.  Based on who you authenticate as, you are placed on the appropriate VLAN.
However, IPv6 does not function properly.  I believe this is due to the nature that the WLC only bridges IPv6 from the Interface Group that the WLAN is assigned to and/or whatever Multicast VLAN you assign.
If I connect as a user assigned to the same matching VLAN as the WLAN Interface / Multicast VLAN, IPv6 works just fine.  I do not even have to have the "Enable IPv6" box checked in the Advanced tab, nor does the "Multicast Vlan Feature" need to be enabled - IPv6 still works.
If I connect as a user that is assigned to a different VLAN than the WLAN Interface / Multicast VLAN, I see the IPv6 Router Advertisement from the WLAN Interface / Multicast VLAN, and not the VLAN that "Allow AAA Override" switched me to.  Naturally since I'm getting as IPv6 prefix for a different VLAN, when I try to route traffic through the IPv6 default gateway (which isn't on the VLAN I'm connected to), it doesn't work.
One work-around to have IPv6 support is to use distinct, non-dynamic per VLAN/SSID assignments.  This is ugly and doesn't scale (16 max SSIDs).
Has anyone else experienced this and know of a solution?
For now I'll just have to set the WLAN Interface to a VLAN which does not have IPv6 enabled and my wireless users won't have IPv6 unless they VPN on top of Wifi.  Rather disappointing.

this sounds alot like another implication of IPv6 with "more than one VLAN on the same SSID".
    see this thread:
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2157621?tstart=60
not with dynamic vlan, but vlan select - which, on the L2/L3 on SSID-side is essentially the same.
as mentioned in the thread, 7.2 has a feature that "automatically sends the correct RA to the correct clients via L2  wireless unicast. By unicasting the RA, clients on the same WLAN, but a  different VLAN, do not receive the incorrect RA."
lucky for you, 7.2 is available for the 2504 - with my WiSM1s I am out of luck :-(
so this feature *could* solve this problem, as the problem is that the wrong IPv6-RAs are broadcasted for the client (because the SSID is the same)

  • Tacacs+ and dynamic vlans

    Hi,
Is there a good howto or tutorial that shows what settings are required to have dynamic vlan functionality . Using tacacs+ 802.1x/peap I can get a domain user authenticated but I don't follow how the vlan setup / switching should be done. I want all users that fail domain authentication to be put in vlan xxx and if the user does authenticate to be put into vlan yyy (I am using 802.1x PEAP and server side cert only). I am using ACS v3.3, W2k-AD, winXP supplicant , cat5000. Thx in adv.

Yes, you can get the proper documentation at " target="_blank">www.cisco.com/techsupport--------> Products --------> Security ----------> select appropriately to go to Tacacs and click on view all.

  • Dynamic vlan assignment with 1242AG and IAS not working

I'm having trouble getting the dynamic vlan assignment to work on my 1242AG Cisco Aironet APs. I've seen multiple cases with a similar setup and configuration where it works just fine.  I've tried everything I can think of.  Any suggestions?
IAS and AD is running on Windows Server 2003
Everything works fine except the vlan assignment.  Wireless clients successfully authenticate through IAS and Active Directory, but instead of being switched to the appropriate vlan the client stays in whichever vlan/ssid it originally connected to.
PEAP is the authentication method, using MS-CHAP v2.  Naturally I have the attributes in the policy set appropriately, ie:
    Tunnel-Medium-Type > 802
    Tunnel-Pvt-Group-ID > vlanid
    Tunnel-Type > VLAN
    On the AP:
    Cisco 1242AG, C1240 Software (C1240-K9W7-M), Version 12.4(3g)JA, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2)
I've attached the config for the AP, which shows that I have two vlans/SSIDs set to cipher, aes, network eap, wpa, etc. I noticed that if the
Tunnel-Pvt-Group-ID attribute is set to a vlan id that doesn't exist on the AP then the AP makes an event log saying so.

Good! Well to answer your questions, IAS is sending numbers, i.e. Tunnel-Pvt-Group-ID > 129
I did view the debug from an AP which showed the Tunnel attributes being recieved from the radius server (I'll have to wait until Monday to get a copy though).
I see I don't have that line "aaa authorization network default group rad_eap",
So I'll have give it a try, (maybe I can remote in so I don't have to wait until Monday).
    Thanks,
    Jason

  • Dynamic vlan assignment with single SSID

    Hi All,
I have 300 APs deployed  and  concurrent client associations that number 3000+ daily
at the moment I have a single subnet for all users, there is no authentication just a click through
page with email entry to gain access.
The APs are assigned to groups based upon the building zone they are in, is it possible to
assign a vlan based upon the AP the user is associated to but still only broadcast a single SSID.
    TIA

You can assign dynamic vlan for 802.1X authentication using aaa override from RADIUS server.
In your case, since it is webconsent ssid you can use AP groups to put clients on differnt vlans per the AP group

  • Cisco av-pairs SSID vs Dynamic Vlan Assignment

    Hello,
Once upon a time, there was a Cisco av-pairs attribute to allow a Wireless user to a given SSID through Radius servers.
If I'm not wrong, this feature has not been supported anymore (for several years) on WLC.
Dynamic vlan assignment is an alternative way to control user acces to a given vlan. It simplifies the architecture, because only one SSID is needed and the user traffic is then redirected to the right vlan. But... There is an important issue with it, since only one SSID (and BSSID) is used, broadcast packets from all vlans are transmitted to everybody. It is an issue when some services use broadcast to announce their features (IPv6 autoconf, Bonjour, and so on...).
So the question is if a working alternative to SSID av-pairs exists.
    Thanks.

To be honest, I have never heard of this SSID av-pair ever working in wireless:)
You would need at least two ssids and the radius server would need to ability to send a CoA to dissassociate the device so that the device would join the other SSID. The radius server would also have to push out the wireless profile to the client for the SSID they need to associate to. This can be done using Cisco ISE, but not Microsoft radius or even Cisco ACS.
You can still use aaa overuse to place devices on specific vlans and use the WLC to allow bonjour or  ACLs to filter what you don't want going out of the vlan.  WLC has bonjour capabilities and thus you can specify that on the interface and not on the WLAN.  If course their are limitations, but with newer requirements means that there is no one answer.  You might be able to meet certain requirements, but other you will have to sort of figure out.

  • 802.1X for wired environments using Radius/ACS for Dynamic Vlan Assignment

    Currently Being Moderated
802.1X for wired environments  using Radius/ACS for Dynamic Vlan Assignment
Could someone please provide me with a simplest set of configuration steps to fire up Radius in ACS and 802.1X for dynamic vlan assignment. The objective is to roll out NAC L2 OOB using the 802.1X method for dymamic vlan assignments.
    If possible show:
    1. ACS/Radius Configurations.
    2. End User Switch Configurations
    Variables:
    Switch A
    MAC Address aaaa.bbbb.cccc     Vlan 10
                bbbb.cccc.dddd     Vlan 20
Also, if someone posts the Pros and Cons of using Radius/ACS/802.1X for Dynamic Vlan Assignments.
Other technology sets that can be used for Dynamic Vlan assignment EXCEPT from deprecated/obsolete VMPS.
    Thanks in advance. .

    Hi Guys,
Hmmm, well if your just looking for Mac based authentication the good news is that is very easy.  Just set create your Radius server, ACS, FreeRadius, Steelbelted radius etc.  Then create user with the name of the Mac address, in other words if the mac address is 0012.0021.1122 the the name would be 001200211122 and the password would be the mac address.  Then you set the vlan and tunnel stuff, like so tunnel-Type would be vlan, Tunnel-medium would be 802 and Tunnel-Private-Group-ID is the name of the vlan(not the vlan number)
So for the Cisco ACS 4.x you would create a user as specified above, fill in all the password boxes with MAC address, I believe the mac has to be all lower case in the name and the password.  Then check the Separate(Chap/MS-Chap/ARAP) box.  Then you pick the group the machine belongs to, the group is the part that defines what vlan it is on.
Before you create the user, create the group with info I wrote above and in addition specify the Service-Type as Authenticate Only.
Freeradius is a bit harder to configure the specifics and I am just now testing a freeradius server so I do not know the process for Machine authentication.
If, however, you are trying to authenticate a user that gets a bit trickier and is not so straight forward.

  • 802.1x dynamic vlan assignment using ACS 4.2

    Hi
we have 10 switches 2960 configured with 802.1x authentication against ACS server 4.2.
we have 2 vlans configured on the switches for administrator and endusers. the end user vlan id is 10 and the administartor vlan is is 100.
we need to apply the following scenario, if the enduser PC - that is connected to vlan 10 - has an issue and the administrator will login to the PC with the administrator account to fix that issue, the switch should dynamically reconfigure the port with the administrator vlan ( 100 ) .
is the above scenario doable using dot1x with the ACS server?

    I have the following scenario
    2 bulidings with multiple floor
Each floor should be in different VLAN.
The network should be authenticated with 802.1x and each switch port should be assigned with dynamic VLAN from ACS.

  • Dynamic VLAN on Access Point using RADIUS

    Hi.
I am using a single Cisco 1130AG authenticating to RADIUS on Microsoft IAS (I do NOT have a WLC)
I was wondering is it possible to use one flat SSID in my network and then dynamically assign VLANs to users based on matching of RADIUS Policy and RADIUS Return attributes?
    I have configured the attributes on radius as per documentation;
    * IETF 64 (Tunnel Type)—Set this to VLAN.
    * IETF 65 (Tunnel Medium Type)—Set this to 802.
    * IETF 81 (Tunnel Private Group ID)—Set this to VLAN ID.
The returned VLAN ID exists on the Access Point and direct connection to the SSID without the return value works okay.
Each time I connect the VLAN just defaults to the native VLAN for the SSID
I think it may be impossible without WLC!
    HELP!!

From what I found when using MBSSID it appears you cannot use dynamic VLANs.
However you can use a single broadcasted SSID and various non-broadcast SSIDs with dynamic VLANs.
Ideally a single SSID and dynamic VLANs via dot1x would be fine for my setup.
However I have a specific wireless device which cannot use dot1x/EAP and therefore I need an second broadcast SSID to use for this. Which then causes the dynamic VLAN setup not to work.

  • Dynamic VLAN Assignment + NPS

    Hello,
I'm planning a deployment with the following:
    5508 WLC running 7.0.222.0
    NCS 1.0.2.29
    50+ 3502i AP's
    Windows 2008 R2 running NPS
    EAP-TLS for authentication
The end goal is to have a single SSID and utilize NPS to dynamically assign VLAN's depending on role/group.
I've read several documents that use ACS to complete the dynamic VLAN assignment (inclduing http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_configuration_example09186a008076317c.shtml), however in this case ACS is not available.
My question basically is; do I need ACS to apply the VSA for Cisco Airespace, or can this be done solely with the following IETF attributes using Microsoft NPS and AAA override on the WLC?
    [64] Tunnel-Type
    [65] Tunnel-Medium-Type
    [81] Tunnel-Pvt-Group-ID
Any advice would be greatly appreicated!

  • WLC- dynamic Vlan assignment with Radius

Hello, we would like to use this feature in our company and because of that I am now testing it. But I found one problem.
I created one testing SSID and two Vlans on WLC. On ACS I use an IETF atributes (064,065,081) for my account and I am changing Vlan ID (081) during testing.
It works with LEAP but when I use PEAP-GTC (which we use commonly in our company) the ip address is not assigned properly (ip which was assigned before remains).
    Could you please help me?

There is good document which explains how to configure Dynamic VLAN Assignment with RADIUS Server and Wireless LAN Controller. This will help you. You will find the document at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_configuration_example09186a008076317c.shtml

  • Flexconnect dynamic VLAN assignment doubt

    Hi, all,
I am trying to understand how FlexConnect with dynamic VLAN assignment works. We have the need to dynamically put people in different VLANs based on their AD groups (all employees use the same SSID), I can understand that in traditional CAPWAP mode, AP just tunnels all traffic to WLC, WLC is the authenticator and it knows  what users' identities are and can encapsulate user traffic to different VLANs before send the traffic to the switch it connects. Here is the part I don't understand:
    1) If APs are operating in Flexconnect mode (APs are trunking to switches), how does each AP know what VLAN tag to put a specific user traffic on? AP is not authenticator, it knows nothing about associated client's AD identify. How does WLC convey the dynamical VLAN information to APs?
    2) I want to eliminate WLCs in remote offices by letting all remote office APs join HQ WLC with FlexConnect mode, I can keep the same VLAN mapping scheme in remote office switching environment, in some offices I want to do local authentication (Domain controller + Radius Server), looks like I can specify Radius server in FlexConnect group, in this case will APs become authenticator? Since Radius clients have to be explicitly configured on NPS/Radius server side, does this means I have to statically configure each AP's IP?
    3) I have over a dozen APs in HQ which are operating at FlexConnect mode, but the SSID's "local central authentication" checkbox is not checked, if I want to have local authentication in remote office,  seems that I have to turn on "local authentication" on this SSID, does that mean I have to add each and everyone of those HQ APs to Radius/NPS server client list?
    Thanks,

    Hi ,
    1) Aps knows about Vlans as we can define them inside the Flex connect groups. This is the same way we define flex connect ACLs which are pushed to the Flex APs and are returned by the Radius server later on.
    2) If you are going for Central authentication + local switching ....WLCs will always act like central authenticator and would talk to the radius server. If you have some radius servers at the local site and you want them to use without going through the central authentication..you can do that using (local authentication + local switching). Yes, In this case AP will be authenticator and would be AAA client to be added in the Radius server.
3)yes ,,you are correct. If you want that your AP should do authentication and talk to the local radius server at the site , it has to be added in the Radius server.

  • 5508 and dynamic vlan assignement

    Hello,
I'm trying to setup a 5508 to work with dynamic vlan assignement using the same SSID.
I've followed everyting in this document http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_configuration_example09186a008076317c.shtml
but it doesn't work, every client independent of the RADIUS group is assigned to the same VLAN.
The only difference I have with that document is the [081] Tunnel-Private-Group-ID for which I use a string (nessesary for the LAN switches which use the same RADIUS) instead of a number.
What I see when sniffing the RADIUS traffic, every option is sent correctly to the WLC, from the WLC side and using the debug aaa events enable option I see nothing interesting.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    George

A bit more debugging gave me this:
    *Oct 15 09:31:28.491: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx Received Tunnel-Group-ID Attribute -- ignoring AES Interface-Name '200' for STA xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx.
    *Oct 15 09:31:28.491: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx Tunnel-Type 16777229 should be 13 for STA xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
(xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx is the client mac address)
    It seems that:
    1. WLC ignores the [14179\005] Aire-Interface-Name  parameter regardless of what the value is (I have tried the vlan number, the interface name etc)
    2. the second error is that the tunnel-type 16777229 should be 13. The tunnel-type has the value VLAN as required according to the Cisco document and in general for this to work.  Funny thing is that RFC2868 doesn't define a value of 13 but RFC3580 define VLAN as value 13 so again I've set the correct value.
So I don't really know what to do now.  I guess I have to open a TAC ticket.

  • Dynamic VLAN Assignment with RADIUS Server and Aironet Access Points

    Hi Guys,
I would like to go for "Dynamic VLAN Assignment with RADIUS Server and Aironet Access Points 1300". I want the AP to broadcast only 1 SSID. The client find the SSID ->put in his user credential->Raudius athentication->assign him to an specific vlan based on his groupship.
The problem here is that I don't have a AP controller but only configurable Aironet Access Points 1300. I can connect to the radius server, but I am not sure how to confirgure the AP's port, radio port, vlan and SSID.

    I go through some references:
    3.5  RADIUS-Based VLAN Access Control
As discussed earlier, each SSID is mapped to a default VLAN-ID on the wired side. The IT administrator may wish to impose back end (such as RADIUS)-based VLAN access control using 802.1X or MAC address authentication mechanisms. For example, if the WLAN is set up such that all VLANs use 802.1X and similar encryption mechanisms for WLAN user access, then a user can "hop" from one VLAN to another by simply changing the SSID and successfully authenticating to the access point (using 802.1X). This may not be preferred if the WLAN user is confined to a particular VLAN.
There are two different ways to implement RADIUS-based VLAN access control features:
    1. RADIUS-based SSID access control: Upon successful 802.1X or MAC address authentication, the RADIUS server passes back the allowed SSID list for the WLAN user to the access point or bridge. If the user used an SSID on the allowed SSID list, then the user is allowed to associate to the WLAN. Otherwise, the user is disassociated from the access point or bridge.
    2. RADIUS-based VLAN assignment: Upon successful 802.1X or MAC address authentication, the RADIUS server assigns the user to a predetermined VLAN-ID on the wired side. The SSID used for WLAN access doesn't matter because the user is always assigned to this predetermined VLAN-ID.

Any help on this issue is appreicated.
    Thanks.

I'm not sure if the Autonomous APs have the option for AAA Override.  On the WLC, I can go into the BSSID, Security, Advanced, and there's a checkbox that I would check to allow a Radius server to send back the VLAN.
I did a little research and it looks like the 1300 may give this option but instead is defined as "VLAN Override".  I've found the release notes for 12.3(7)JA5 (not sure what version you're running) that give mention and a link to configuring EAP on page 4: http://www.ciscosystems.ch/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/1300/release/notes/o37ja5rn.pdf
    Hope this helps
