Easiest way to move a project/workspace?

Hi:
I have an existing workspace and a project within it that I would like to copy to a remote (unconnected) machine (at home, for example). What is the best way to do this? I see no export/import for source at the workspace or project level. I can copy the source tree easily enough, but then there are other things that will need to be set for the workspace, etc. and the environments/paths might not match exactly. Is there no "cleaner" way to do this?
Thanks,
Mike

You should normally be able to just copy the whole workspace / project (including any .jws or .jpr files). Paths in project and workspace files are stored as relative URLs whenever possible to make them less prone to brittleness when the files are moved about on or between filesystems.
If there are specific settings you're having trouble with when doing this, please let us know - we're actively interested in knowing about these issues because they also affect developers working in a team environment with JDeveloper.
Thanks,

  • What's the easiest way to move app data and data structures to a server?

    Hi guys,
I've been developing my app locally with Apex 4.2 and Oracle 11g XE on Windows 7. It's getting close to the time to move the app to an Oracle Apex server. I imagine Export/Import is the way to move the app. But what about the app tables and data (those tables/data like "customer" and "account" created specifically for the app)? I've been using a data modeling tool, so I can run a DDL script to create the data structures on the server. What is the easiest way to move the app data to the server? Is there a way to move both structures and data in one process?
    Thanks,
    Kim

There's probably another way to get here, but, in SQL Developer, on the tree navigation, expand the objects down to your table, right click, then click EXPORT.. there you will see all the options. This is a tedious process and it sucks IMO, but yeah, it works. It sucks mostly because 1) it's one table at a time, 2) if your data model is robust and has constraints, and sequences and triggers, then you'll have to disable them all for the insert, and hope that you can re-enable constraints, etc without a glitch (good luck, unless you have only a handful of tables)
I prefer using the oracle command line EXP to export an entire schema, then on the target server I use IMP to import the schema. That way, it's near exact. This makes life messy if you develop more than one application in a single schema, and I've felt that pain -- however -- it's a whole lot easier to drop tables and other objects than it is to create them! (thus, even if the process of EXP/IMP moved more than you wanted to "move".. just blow away what you don't want on the target after the fact..)
You could use oracle's datapump method too.
Alternatively, what can be done, IF you have access to both servers from your SQL developer instance (or if you can tnsping them both already from the command line, you can use SQL*PLUS), is run a script that will identify your apex apps' objects (usually by prefix to object names, like EBA_PROJ_%, etc) and do all the manual work for you. I've created a script that does exactly this so that I can move data from dev to prod servers over a dblink. It's tricky because of the order that must be executed to disable constraints and then re-enable them, and of course, trickier if you don't consistently prefix ALL of your "application objects"... (tables, views, triggers, sequences, functions, procs, indexes, etc)

Your best option is to post this in the iTunes forum.

  • Any way to move the slide workspace?

I'd like to be able to create action moves that start from outside the top and the left edges of a slide.
As long as the slide workspace is anchored on the top and left sides, it's close to impossible to accurately start a move from the top or the left.
Is there any way to move the slide workspace into the center of its work window, like in PowerPoint?
    Thanks,
    Eric

I do about the same things than you do: "primarily for proposal presentations, training, and speaker support for business meetings." What makes my presentations amazing: a very helpful characteristic of Keynote is the ability to copy and paste from Photoshop or Illustrator vector logos or other pieces of artwork, as well as importing PSDs with transparency and play with them in slides. Along with the new features in Keynote 4 (Smart Builds, Actions, etc.), I can now make my presentations move a lot more and with less work. I don't say my presentations are traditional: they have to be impressive enough to catch potential clients for my job. So sometimes I have to make some sort of movies out of Keynote, that last about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Some kind of stuff that would take days with Flash, but only a few hours with Keynote, and with the possibility to change many aspects of it in a minute, as opposed to Flash, again.
I do not experiment a lot with PowerPoint, because as far as I used to know, many of the features I mentioned above aren't part of PowerPoint. PowerPoint doesn't give enough control about animation duration. The choices are like "Very long, long, medium, fast, very fast". With Keynote, YOU set the timer. You want the animation to take 0.7 sec., it will! My little movies I was writing you about are timed as sharp as that, because I put music on them as well. Everything has to go one at the right time.
You probably think I should go for a much better 2D or 3D animation software than Keynote, but what is also interesting with Keynote is ease of use. I don't have to be a professional in animation to go the distance required. For now... I'm just getting started, though.

  • What is the easiest way to move my iPhoto library from my macbook to my new mac pro?

What is the easiest way to move my iPhoto library from my macbook to my new mac pro?

Surprisingly easy! Go into the Finder, then into the Photos Library. In there, there will be a file called your iPhoto Library. It holds all your photos, essentially a special type of folder. Using an external hard drive transfer it to the same location on your new Mac. Now, when you boot iPhoto on the new Mac, it will recognise it and you'll see all your photos instantly!
There's a really good video on it here...

  • Easiest way to move games and apps from old ipad (cracked screen) to replacement ipad?

What is the easiest way to move games from old ipad (cracked screen) to new (replacement) ipad?

When you plug the new one into iTunes to set it up, you'll be asked if you want to set it up as a new iPad or restore from the backup of the old one. make that choice and you should be good to go. You'll need to input passwords and set the internet back up and such, but most of it will be there.

  • Easiest way to move projects from Ableton to iPad

I'm looking to move whole song projects over from Ableton (PC) to iPad.  I don't mind if I'm using Garageband or a different app.
At the moment I can use iTunes file sharing to get tracks into iPad, BUT I have to mix down each individual track in Ableton as wavs, then drop the result into iTunes, then transfer to iPad, then find the wavs from a massive list, import/copy them one by one into garageband until they're all there and line them up correctly.  It feels desperately long winded.  Is there a quicker way?
    Many thanks

Thanks Limnos!  Really appreciate the help!
    To clarify:
    - I currently have only movies on the external 1TB drive (which iTunes points too).  The downside is that I ALWAYS have to have my external drive plugged in, in order to play on Apple TV (or view on MacBook).  I have appx. over 500GBs of movies on my external 1TB.
    - All music (appx. 200GBs) is currently on my internal hard disk, but with a 500GB internal hard drive, that's going to fill up quickly (just so you know - I already have about 125GBs of pics in iPhoto AND work in Photoshop regularly so PSDs lessen my internal 500GB space quickly).
Eventhough I HATE having to keep an external drive plugged into my MacBook, I'm just going to have to suck it up and get used to it so I will have more space and my MacBook will run faster.
With that in mind, I was thinking about moving my music (200GBs) onto my 2TB external drive (along with the movies).  So that would leave roughly the photos and Photoshop files (and random other things that are small in size) on my internal drive.
I could start all over and delete all movies that are in iTunes (the application - not the folders) and then drag and drop them into iTunes from the new 2TB, but I wasn't sure all the metadata (really the cover artwork) would be attached when I did that?  Going that route really doesn't bother me since I've already copied all movies files from my 1TB to my 2TB.  Basically, I would be starting over from scratch as if the old 1TB never existed.
Trying to run this through my mind and come up with the best/easiest way.  What I don't want to do is try and find cover artwork for the almost 300 movies I have (and all the cover artwork for the CDs I have too if I decide to keep my music on the 2TB external drive).
Hope that helps and makes sense?  Thanks again!

  • Easiest Way to Move Media from One External Drive to Another?

My MacBook Pro only has a 500GB hard drive and I currently have all my movies on a 1TB external hard drive.  Everything works fine through iTunes, but now since the 1TB is maxed out, I'd like to use my new 2TB external hard drive going forward.  I understand that I need to re-route where iTunes finds the movies, but what is the easiest way to make the conversion from the 1TB to the 2TB?
I have copied all movies from the 1TB to the 2TB.  Is the only thing left to do is re-route the location to the 2TB?  Or do I need to drag and drop all movies into iTunes (they're all already in there)?  Just didn't know if I needed to add them into iTunes again so they know to point to the 2TB drive. (sorry if I didn't explain that good!)
Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Easiest way to move many events to a different external drive?

    Folks -
I need to move 300 Events to a disk of another name. Is there a quick way to do this? I have only been able to do it one event at a time, using command-drag between volumes in iMovie '11. Many of them have Projects, which I would love to keep connected.

    Hi
There are some very important things about this.
    A. Do not move any folder named
    • iMovie Events or iMovie Projects - on DeskTop/Finder - If so iMovie loses connection to them.
    B. Moving can and should be done Within iMovia and resp. window Events and Projects
    C. External/Second hard disk
    • HAS TO BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchane will not work for VIDEO
    • SHOULD be a FireWire (or internally e-Sata) one - as USB/USB2 performs badly especially when filling up and HD-video

  • What's the easiest way to move or copy an effect from a layer or object to another layer or object?

If I drag an effect from the target circle of one object to anther in the layer's panel it replaces the effect along with all appearance. But I want just to add the effect. For example, a layer has a drop shadow and a path, round corners. I want to move the drop shadow from the layer  to the path so that the path now has the round corners and the drop shadow.
To do this I have to open the shadow effect of the layer wright down its parameters, then create a shadow effect for the path with the same parameters which is a lot of work. Any easier way?

    Thanks Monika,
May be I'm not understanding you or may be you misunderstood me.
    This is an example:
Create a document and a path (for example a box) and apply Effects > Stylize > Round Corners
In the layers panel, click the target circle of the layer and apply Effects > Stylize > Drop Shadow.
Now I want to move or copy the drop shadow from the layer and add it to the path without removing the Round Corners effects already applied to the path.
The result for the path should be Drop Shadow effect added to it and the Round Corners effect remains.
The result for the layer should be no effect remains for it in case of moving the effect or the Drop Shadow effect remains in case of copying it (holding Alt key while dragging from its target circle).

  • What's the best way to move a project from one HD to another?

I have a movie I've been working on for 2 years.  The entire project is on an external hard drive.  I recently got a new macbook pro and would like to take the project off of the external hard drive and move it to my macbook pro hard drive (my external is starting to act a little goofy and I want to rescue my project until I can get a new one).
There is tons of media for my project.  I've read that using media manager is an option.  I tried this but am having difficulty locating all of the media to reconnect once I do, but all the media should be in the same place, so I can't figure out why I can't find a lot of it to reconnect.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?  None of the media is offline when I open the project from my external HD.  If you know a better method than media manager, please share.  I've never had to execute this kind of proceedure before so it's new to me.  Thank you.

The files will be eating up all your disc space and affecting performance. Setting the Scratch disc only comes into affect if you are capturing files from video sources via video cards or firewire/thunderbolt connections. The scratch disc records the video as data. The scratch disk needs to be robust enough to capture at a high data rate to capture uncompressed video in HighDef or Standard Def. This usually requires a RAID drive. If you never capture uncompressed video via a video card (AJA Kona/Blackmagic/Avid Mojo), you can set your root drive as the scratch disc. The problem there is it will hog up disc space. That is why most editors use an external drive to be the scratch disc.

  • Easiest way to move files to Mac Mini server

I'm moving GIGs of files over to my mac mini server from my MBP. Right now it says its going to take 140 hours to move my iPhoto library over. Is their a faster way to connect to the Mac Mini Server other then ethernet? Right now my MBP is wired to my verizon router/switch and my server is wired to the router/switch. Can I put a firewire directly from the server to my MBP? Will that work?

Yes, it should. So should the suggested ethernet cable between the two directly.

  • What is the easiest way to move all my iPhone photos to an external hard drive?

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have failed to move contacts and calendar items across you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • What's the best way to move a project from my hard drive to someone else's hard drive?

I've read lots of related discussions concerning problems after copying/importing/whatever, so I want to avoid those.  I have worked on a project since its inception.  It is currently in RoboHelp 8 HTML with several dozen LINKED Word documents and a couple of PDFs.Someone else is about to take over maintenance.  What's the recommended sequence, please?

Assuming the project is not under any form of source control, simply copy the source to a shared drive and let your colleague know when it is available. Just make sure they copy it to a local drive before they edit anything.

  • What is the easiest way to move every single object in a PDF?

I have 300 pdf documents containing a total of about 2000 pages of content... and I need to shift every single object in them a half inch to the right.
Is there an easy or fast way to do this?  Im currently only able to select all objects on a single page, which makes this task... frustrating.

You should be able to write a script to do the job. George Johnson posted a script for cropping pages based on landscape and portrait orientation recently that should suggest the approach. The commands can be found in the JavaScript manual from Adobe.
