Edit HD footage

How to you edit HD footage? when I watch my footage in the viewer it is 1080, but as soon as i drag it onto the timeline it turns into standard definition. How do I allow the footage to be edited in 1080 HD on the timeline?

Create a new Sequence with the settings for the type of HD footage you're working with.

  • Prosumer looking for the right desktop to edit hd footage...

    Hi Everybody,
I have a question for all of you, but before I ask the question I have searched high and low for an answer to my question and although I've found people in similar situations, I need to find an answer for my specific needs. Okay here it goes, I have an had camera Sony Sr11 and I want to edit the footage, somewhat flawlessly, I want it to run as smooth as possible b/cuz my current laptop (dell 1520 2.4 Ghz, 4GB Ram, non-dedicated graphics) isn't cutting it. I'm not a film student or anything I just like to make movies it's a hobby and I do it for family and friends that sort of thing. I intend on using final cut express to get that particular job done, I also have thousands of photos..and I don't plan on putting them on the hard drive of my computer, they're kept in an external hard drive. I like to edit those as well I wanted to use aperture for that. So the two main programs I want to use are final cut express hd and aperture...now for the third thing...I do a little gaming and I mean a little..I play sims 2 and I want to eventually play sims 3...so I want a computer that can run those games at the highest settings...compared to other games I don't think that's asking much but I don't want medium settings I want high settings...
So those are my main concerns...running final cut express, aperture, sims 2 and eventually sims 3...should I get the new Imac 24" 3.06 Ghz or should I bite the bullet save a little longer and get the mac pro with an external screen maybe hp or dell...oh and one more question do you have to be a "computer major" to get the adc discount b/cuz I'm a pharmacy student???
Again thanks for your help everybody

    hey there VXII,
the discount is available to any one who's a registered student w/ a valid ID- check w/ your school bookstore, take your ID to an Apple Store or check out the Education Store here on apple.com for the requirements. the current iMacs are so new, there may not be anyone who has used it for gaming.... but you might want to check MacWorld in a few days to see if they have new Benchmark tests or Reviews that may help you decide about gaming or just keep the Dell for gaming. to edit the HDD, AVCHD, any not tape-based video over Firewire, you will need an Intel Mac & i suggest you get as much RAM as you can afford, try Crucial or OWC to get it for way less than Apple.
    good luck.

  • I would like to save footage to a hard drive and stiill be able ot edit the footage. I would like to reuse the cards on the  same project. Is this a sensible option. Camera JVC  GY-HM100

Hello I wonder if anyone would be able to help.
I have a JVC GY-HM100. I have footage from a ongoing project saved on SDHC cards. I want to save money by reusing the cards while i carry on working on the same project.  I wondered if I could save the footage from the SDHC card too a hard drive ; delete the footage from the cards and reuse them. would i still be able to edit the footage stored on the hard drive alongside the footage which will be imported straight from the camera..  I have heard that this camera works well with final cut pro but if the info is saved to a hard drive first and subsequent footage is straight from the camra and SDHC cards will it work or is it a false economy to reuse the cards.
    Hope that makes sense

  • Editing iPhone footage in final cut pro

So my sister got baptized and I'm trying to put together a hightlight of this awesome event. I did not have my video camera on me, but I did have my iPhone. I shot a 3 minute video and then brought it into FCP without any issues. It plays perfectly in the timeline, or so I thought. I'm letting the timeline adjust itself automatically to format to the iPhone video settings. 640x480, H.264 encoding. I have to render but that's only because the audio.
The issue I'm having is with the transitions from video to still pictures I imported from another camera. I'm adding a simple "fade in / fade out" and it's doing crazy things to my work flow. The video now jumps or lags and will not play smooth. Also when I transition into a picture from video it flickers real bad. I've tried everything and can't get it to work. Last night I started using iMovie and that was terrible. I need some help on workflow here. I should be able to go in and out of video and pictures without any problems. My exported video even jumps so I know there is something wrong. I tried just putting two iphone video clips back to back and there was lag there as well. I edit HD footage all the time and have a loaded system. So I know it's not hard ware...

Convert the video in Compressor or the QT Pro player to motionjpeg or some other editing format.
    Use that instead.
Remember that the original footage is heavily compressed and using a transcode won't improve the footage, just the edit.

It is the GPU that is important.  All the CPU's will be fast enough.  If you can affords it, the 15" with the NVIDIA GPU is the best.

  • How efficient is CS5.5 on a 7200 RPM HDD to edit HD footage?

I presently have two Seagate Cheetah HD -146.8 GB internal 3.5" SAS 15Krpm 16MB in RAID 0. This is the recommended configuration from Adobe to manage uncompressed HD footage.
If I install the Production Premium on a 7200 RPM HD, would it be the same efficiency as the RAID 0 configuration to edit HD footage?
    I also have an Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition/ 3.2 GHz processor, a ASUS P6T DELUXE /OC PALM MOTHERBOARD 1 390.00 390.00 AB Motherboard - ATX - iX58 - LGA1366 Socket - Serial ATA-300, and a Quadro CX Graphics Card NVIDIA PCIE 1.5GB with 24 GB of RAM. I also have a 1 TB 7200 RPM HDD for storage.

To Mylenium. You're right, it's not about the footage. The Raid 0 configuration at 15000 rpm is for the Adobe Premium CS5.5 64 bit. When you open Premiere, After Effects or Photoshop, it's incredibly fast because of the Mercury Engine. And you can playback HD footage in real-time without rendering. That's what Adobe and most experts recommend. But I was wondering how the Premium CS5.5 performs when installed on a regular 7200 rpm HD.

  • Editing 1080p footage on MacBook Pro 15-inch Core i5 2.4GHz

    Hi,
I am thinking of purchasing a Canon EOS 550d. I would be very interested to know if my April 2010 MacBook Pro 15-inch Core i5 2.4GHz will be capable of editing 1080p footage shot at 25fps (PAL). I have edited 720p footage without any problems, but I have never had a camera capable of recording in 1080p.
    Thanks,
    Acros-Krik

Should not be a problem at all. The best path is to transcode your footage using something like MPEG Streamclip to a usable codec, i.e. ProRes422 or Apple Intermediate Codec, for Final Cut Pro or Express respectively. If using Premiere Pro CS5, you can import native files directly into it. ProRes422 LT is a great codec from FCP7 only, it keeps the transcoded footage at the same file size as the native files and holds plenty of information for color grading later.
It's highly recommended to have all footage and scratch files on an external drive and not your OS drive. Makes everything operate more smoothly.
I do video work on the exact same machine using Final Cut Pro 7. I would strongly advise maxing out the ram. 8GB of ram helped a lot. I was hitting the 4GB limit with just a few pro apps open prior to adding more.

  • I am interested in editing GoPro footage using Adobe Photoshop Premiere  any have experience with that.

Wondering if this software is good for editing GoPro footage.  Thanks

    My GoPro workflow currently is:
    - record with GoPro in Protune
    - import GoPro MP4 into Premiere and edit
    - convert GoPro MP4 to AVI using GoPro Studio (leaving same file name stored in sub-folder)
    - 'offline' GoPro Premiere MP4 footage and 'relink' to AVI
    - export media out of Premiere
Be careful with AVI files in Premiere as they crash my 2014.2 release 8.2.0(65) build. Solution I see to have AVI not crash Premiere is to turn off GPU Acceleration and use Software only.
After I re-link AVI files in Premiere, I leave my GPU Acceleration on and render out. I do not play the AVI with Premiere to avoid crashing. When I am re-linking the MP4 to the AVI, I am saving the project frequently due to Premiere crashing. I am exporting GoPro AVIs fine with GPU Acceleration on.
Premiere handles GoPro MP4 files fine. I could not tell you anything about Photoshop video editing if that is what you are asking.

  • Minimum mac reqs for editing HD footage

I have a mac G4 and Final Cut 4.5 and want to know what the minimum requirements are for editing HD footage easily (i.e. without the computer constantly crashing.). I have heard I can use my G4 which has 1.25 Gigs sd ram and a 733 MHz processor to edit HD footage.
I have also heard I need to get a G5 with at least 2 G sd ram with Final Cut 5 HD. Can someone tell me what the minimum requirements are and what kind of video card I need to properly and easily edit HD footage.
    Thanks so much.

I don't know specifically about Final Cut 4.5, but the recommended specs for Final Cut 5 are listed on this page:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/specs.html
    System Requirements
    * Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G4 (500MHz or faster) or G5 processor; HD features require 1GHz or faster single or dual processors
    * 512MB of physical RAM; HD features require 1GB of RAM or more (2GB recommended)
    * AGP Quartz Extreme graphics card
    * Mac OS X v10.3.9 or Mac OS X v10.4 (or later)
    * QuickTime 7.0 or later
    * 1GB of disk space required to install application; additional 10GB required to install all optional templates, loops, content and tutorials (may be installed on separate disks)
    * DVD drive for installation
So: 1 GHz or faster single or dual processor, 1 GB of RAM or more (2 GB recommended)

  • Editing HD footage, 2.0 Ghz enough?

Getting ready to purchase a Mac Pro to edit high-def home movies (shot with a Canon HV20). Some helpful people in this forum recently convinced me that an iMac wouldn't cut it when editing HD footage.
So now my question is: Will the dual 2.0 model cut it? Of course, I plan to upgrade the RAM (hopefully to 4GB). And I plan to get the X1900 video card (for gaming). And I will have at least one other internal drive, to store footage.
So when editing the HD footage in iMove and/or Final Cut Express, will the dual 2.0 system choke or will it handle it nicely? Obviously I know that certain rendering times will be longer than on the 2.66, but what I'm really worried about is the actual processing of footage as it imports (I have heard bad stories about systems just bogging down when trying to import HD in real time).
    Any help is appreciated!

I've never really looked at Express, just Studio/Pro where you want to get as much cpu as you can along with at least 4GB RAM minimum, plus boot drive, data and RAID for editing, (you'll probably want to have 4 x 500GB drives plus external for backup and archive).
I would not skimp on cpu. 2.64GHz for $300.
"Install the latest cards from AJA Video and Blackmagic Design (for video acquisition and playback)" - Mac Pro Performance
Final Cut, Compressor and others make good use of each core. And you want this to last 2-4 yrs. iMove? not as much.
Apple's centerpiece Final Cut Pro editor has so far depended exclusively on CPUs to draw live footage, rapidly scaling down the quality of live previews as an editing crew shifts to editing HD video or multiple streams.
Final Cut Pro: Additional RAM may be recommended for High Definition video formats Final Cut Pro may drop video frames in cases where there is not enough system memory available. For instance, if you're editing an uncompressed 8-bit or 10-bit high-definition codec, and you're monitoring video externally via a PCI or PCI-E video interface, Final Cut Pro may drop frames occasionally if your computer does not have sufficient system RAM.

  • Editing 24p footage - FCP or Vegas?

I'm planning on using a dvx100b to shoot a project in 24p (or 24pa). For editing, I quite naturally was going to use FCP (29.97 & 23.976 timelines respectively), since I already own the software. When I mentioned this to an acquaintance who is an experienced Vegas editor who also did a little work on FCP, he was adamant that Vegas is vastly superior to FCP for 24p editing. Not having ever edited 24p(a) footage, I was taken aback, and lacking in information to confidently express any opinion. Im not clear on why it would make a difference... what's going to be different editing such footage on FCP from just regular non-24p footage?
Also, I don't want to spend the money on Vegas, or the time to learn the software, not to mention having to upgrade my windows gear (I only have a 3 year old Dell Inspiron 1100 w/ XP). Bottom line, I really don't want to do this, unless there are very compelling reasons.
Is anyone here familiar with both Vegas and FCP who can shed light on the issue? TIA.

Thanks, Capt. Mench, that is quite helpful, as I'd rather stick with FCP since I already am a bit familiar with it (not 24p editing though), instead of learning another software like Vegas from scratch. I hear you wrt. Vegas... my purpose was not to diss Vegas, but rather I was worried that FCP had some kind of issues when it comes to dealing with 24a(p) footage and Vegas did not. If it's just that Vegas workflow is "better" in being slightly more intuitive or economical or ergonomic, I don't care. If FCP can do the job without hiccups (even if less "iintuitively" than Vegas), then I'd rather stick with FCP.

  • Limitations of editing interlaced footage

I have a program timeline full of Red and P2 footage in both 29.97fps and 23.97fps for a program that needs to be delivered in 1080i. I have been advised to bring all of my footage up to 29.97i by adding 3:2 pulldown in AE.I was told that AME does not do a good job of adding the pulldown. I would then edit this interlaced footage to a final in Premiere.
It was also said that "I would then be subject to all of the limitations of editing interlaced footage."
I don't know what that means. Can anybody help?

Ask your question on the Premiere Pro/ AME/ AE forums, resepctively. No point whatsoever posting it here. This forum only deals with general suite issues and pre-sales questions.

  • Edit C300 footage natively (NO duplicate media) in 10.1.4?

Can I edit C300 footage natively (NO duplicate media) in FCPX 10.1.4? If so, how? When I import it automatically creates new files. This takes up too much hard drive space for me. It looks like from the current update description that you can edit from the C300 source files but in practice that is not happening.

Sorry Al, no that's not my question. I am not trying to edit off my media card, I always backup that card to an external drive. I didn't realize how unclear I'm being, so let me try again.
    Here is my workflow:
After I shoot on the C300 and fill up a CF media card I will dump the contents of that card on an External Hard Drive.
When I open up FCPX and select import and choose that folder (the backup I just created on my external hard drive), the program will start creating MOV files of all that media (essentially duplicating what is already on the external hard drive).
If (INSTEAD OF IMPORTING) I drag the contents from that folder (the backup I created on my external hard drive) straight into FCPX, the program will let me edit all that media WITHOUT creating new MOV files. This is possible because I have the MXF4Mac pluggin.
My ultimate question is if the new FCPX update allows you to edit footage in the same way, that is, use the original backup of the media from my external hard drive and edit those MXF files WITHOUT having the program create duplicate MOV files.
I'm guessing this is not an option.
