Editable Spreadsheets in InDesign/DPS

Anyone have any suggestions for importing Excel or Google Spreadsheet data into a customized table created in InDesign? The other issue I'm working around is I would like the option of making edits inside the spreadsheet and be able to easily update them inside of InDesign. This will be used for a DPS document so if anyone knows of any "web-overlay" solutions that might even be best! Thanks!

Are you expecting that the spreadsheet be editable on the tablet, or just that you can update the sheet in Excel, update the link in InDesign, maintain the formatting etc, update the Article, and update the folio?
If the former is the case, then you need to consider an online HTML5 spreadsheet tool like Google Apps or Microsoft 365. These work very well in DPS in Web Content Overlays. Of course, you need to be online to view the data, but you can also edit the data in the DPS app and have that data save to the cloud. In both of those cases, the editor will need to authenticate in the web window, but it works.
If the latter is true, then you should consider Table Styles in InDesign. In addition, you should create a style mapping when you import the spreadsheet, and also you should enable Preferences>File Handling>Create Links When Placing Text and Spreadsheet Files

    erneut eine Frage zu InDesign DPS und dem dahinter liegenden Prozess im Folio Producer:
    Derzeit veröffentlicht mein Arbeitgeber ein Multi-folio-App via iTunes Connect auf das Apple iPad. Das von Adobe mitgelieferte Tutorial hat hier soweit brauchbare Arbeit geleistet. Wir haben dem Leitfaden entsprechend ein Multi-folio-App erstellt und in iTunes mit einem kostenlosen Folio als Gratis-In-App-Purchase ausgestattet. Das funktioniert auch soweit. Das App ist online, das kostenlose Folio downloadbar und funktional (obwohl es in iTunes Connect stets unter dem Status Waiting for Upload verbleibt - ich nehme an, iTunes bezieht seine Daten aus der veröffentlichten Datei im Folio Producer).
    Als nächstes wollen wir nun seit einer ganzen Weile ein weiteres Folio, diesmal als käufliches Produkt veröffentlichen. Der Prozess war dabei der Selbe: Folio im Folio Producer veröffentlicht (mit dem Unterschied, dass es diesmal nicht Öffentlich-Kostenlos, sondern als Öffentlich-Handel markiert wurde), anschließend im iTunes Connect ein In-App Purchase eröffnet (diesmal mit einem Pricing Tier), dieses mit der selben Produkt-ID ausgestattet und, weil Apple und Adobe das gleichermaßen empfehlen, gleich darauf ein Update des Gesamt-Apps hochgeladen.
    Seitdem hat sich nichts getan. Das neue Folio erschien einmal für eine Minute im Multi-folio-App (konnte aber nicht heruntergeladen werden), ansonsten scheint es so, als wäre die Integration fehlgeschlagen. Beide in In-App Purchases verweilen im Waiting for Upload, das kostenlose Folio ist weiterhin herunterladbar, sein preisgebundener Bruder bleibt unerschienen. Die amerikanischen Foren wissen auch keine Lösung mehr, Apple schiebt alle Verantwortung von sich und der Adobe-Hilfechat schickte mich hierher.
    Für Anregungen oder Eingebungen wäre ich sehr dankbar.

    Adobent war ein Wortspiel aus Langeweile, genauso wie Bäcker Scholz aus der totalen Abstinenz von Kreativität für Foren-Nicknames entstand. Ich bin ungefähr so sehr Bäcker wie Astronaut.
    Die DPS ist eine Pro-Version. Soweit ich weiß kann man in der Single Edition sowieso keine Multi-Folio-Apps erstellen.

  • Adobe InDesign / DPS Query

    Hello,
    Is it possible to create a folio / application and deploy it to multiple (standalone) iPads WITHOUT having to upload it to the Apple App Store using InDesign / DPS?
    Scenario / content:
    I'd like to create a photo album folio and deploy it to a single iPad. I'd then like to offer this service as part of my business and deploy it multiple iPads (if the need arises) without having to upload it via the Apple App Store.
    Any thoughts on if this is possible and if so, how, would be much appreciated.

    You need to submit the app to apple and will be available in the app store.
    You can create .ipa and sync it on the listed device (in your apple developer account) for testing.
    You can share your folio with anyone who has access to content viewer using adobe ID on their iPad.
    Apart from that if you want to sell your app without submitting it to apple it is not possible.

  • InDesign DPS and iTunes Connect: In-App Purchase won't appear

    Greetings Adobeans,
    first of all: I'm not a native speaker, so please forgive me my maybe erronenous english.
    To my question / problem: The company I'm employed publishes a multi-folio-tourguide-app. It is produced with InDesign DPS and the App Builder, published via Folio Producer and should now be sold at iTunes to the Apple iPad, so the publishing process leads inevitable to iTunes Connect. We already launched the multi-folio-app itself along with a free folio as a free, non-consumable in-app purchase. The app is now online, downloadable and our first folio works fine - even it stays "Waiting for Upload" ... I think, the multi-folio-app tells iTunes Connect to get the data out of the Folio Producer, but I don't know the exact details of how this works.
    The next step was to publish a second, priced in-app purchase.
    Our steps were (they might be useful for a solution, I guess):
    - publishing the folio in the Folio Producer (Status: Public - Trade),
    - creating a non-consumable in-app purchase at iTunes Connect, using the same Product-ID as the folio in the Folio Producer,
    - and uploading a update for the entire app, because Apple and Adobe say so.
    But the folio never appeared in the app. It the iTunes Connect-menu it just stays "Waiting for Upload", like our first, but it won't appear at all.
    My wisdom as a graphic designer has come to it's end a long time ago, Apple told us, that they don't look at these in-app purchases at all and we should ask Adobe for help ... and well, Adobe Help Services sent me to here.
    So, I would be deeply grateful for any help or enlightement.

    If your non-consumable in-app purchase in iTunes Connect is still "Waiting for Upload," it means it's not approved yet. You need to provide the screenshot and complete the in-app purchase submission to Apple. They should approved rather quickly. After a while (sometimes as long as 24 hours), your published folio will appear in your app.
    In the future, submit your in-app purchases to Apple well in advance of publishing the folio. That way, you can publish the folio as Public and Retail, and it will appear in your app right away.

  • User Permissions being corrupted by InDesign DPS Tools

    I am using a Mac Pro, running OSX 10.9.5 (2x2.26 GHz Quad-Core, 14GB DDR3).
    I login with an admin account (I did have no other accounts).
    Earlier this week I installed Adobe Creative Cloud and specifically the Digital Publishing tools. When I try to use the Folio Builder I get an error message "An update is required to use Folio Builder.  Please click here to download the Folio Producer tools."
    I contacted Adobe support about this and they told me it was a user permissions corruption (following 3 hours of chat and phone calls!). They fixed it by creating a second admin user account. The Folio Builder worked using this account, so they then amended the read/write Sharing & Permissions of InDesign in my main account. This fixed the issue. For a day. It then broke again.
    I went back to Adobe and they told me to contact Apple as is an operating system problem. After much arguing I have had enough of Adobe and their passing the buck.     This fixed it too. For a day also. I now have the same error.
    The only work-around I have so far is to use InDesign and DPS in the second Admin user account that I have now created. Appears to be fine.
    So, to sum up, my user account permissions appear to being corrupted quickly by the InDesign DPS tools. I am really stumped by this and really frustrated. Any suggestions are welcomed!

  • Single Edition pricing for a DPS Pro account

    We have launched a free Single Edition app thru our DPS Pro account - (in App Builder selected the Single Edition tab)
    My specific question is, Do the downloads from this Single Edition app get subtracted from our Fulfillments account?

    Given the recent advances with InDesign and the new DPS single edition, can a site such as this:http://pinepoint.nfb.ca/
    be created in InDesign for iPad/web distribution? If so, would there be any limitations or unique abilities that are not present on Pinepoint?

    Thanks Bob! Your answer was very helpful. I've been researching this a lot over the last few days an it seems there is no easy way for someone like myself (a designer, not a coder) to create an experience similar to the Pinepoint one except on the iPad. DPS doesn't give me the ability to fade in/out music and video as would be possible with Flash and a timeline and user interaction. I want to take advantage of swiping across the screen of a tablet to move to the next scene of the interactive documentary. If you can think of any other solution that would accomplish this, I'd gladly purchase whatever it is and pull up the class on it in Lynda.com. Otherwise, I think I'll just stick to the limitations in InDesign and DPS.

  • How can two people edit the same InDesign CC document?

    I am looking for a desktop publishing application that I can use to create programs for a high school choir and am experimenting with InDesign CC.  I'll do most of the work creating the progam, but the choir teacher at the last moment will have changes for me or will do them herself.  Either way she will be producing the final copy for printing.
    In an ideal world we would be able to edit the same file at the same time, me from my office and her from her classroom, not on a shared network, much like Google Docs.
    Does InDesign CC have this capability?  What steps would I use to approach this problem using InDesign CC?

    You can look into InCopy for text changes and put the InDesign file in a
    dropbox folder.

  • Unable to edit documents in InDesign CS4

    Hello,
    A work colleague has recently changed their laptop and installed CS4 - since the getting new computer he has been unable to edit documents (which are fine on my machine). He can select objects and reposition on the screen, but can't edit/delete. He can place the cursor and type new text, but can't edit existing text and is unable to move the cursor with the cursor keys.
    The objects are not on the master page or locked.
    Our Corporate IT has recently revoked all admin access to our own machines - could this affect InDesign? (No-one else seems to be effected)
    We have tried uninstalling/reinstalling and deleting the prefs, but to to avail.
    Any ideas?

    My colleague had CS4 installed on his previous machine and had been using it without problem for over a year - its only since receiving his new laptop that the issues have started.
    Unfortunately, I don't think setting up a new user account is really an option (it requires assistance from our parent company's IT dept.).
    Yes, we did follow the instructions in the link when replacing the prefs files.

  • Can't add files to folio in InDesign; DPS

    My work has ground to a halt as I keep getting these errors. I'm creating a magazine for the iPad and designing in InDesign (CS6) goes fine, but when I attempt to add a article to a folio I get one of two errors:
    If I add a file from a folder I get this: "Content generation error. Failed to open the file. Please confirm the file can be opened in the current version of InDesign."
    And if I add a file that's already open, I get this: "An error has occurred while updating article layouts. The InDesign file for the layout cannot be found. Please relink the article to desired source files."
    I've also attempted to preview the folio on two different iPads (3) and get this same error: "An error has occurred while generating folio preview. Source files for one or more article layouts are missing."
    All my files are local and always have been. I've used nothing by CS6 to create these files, and it's always been on this computer. I'm on an iMac purchased about a week ago, so it's running the latest everything from a factory install (OS 10.8.2). I was prevously working on the demo version of CS6 (as I waited for IT to get me the full version). I had the same errors there, but when I upgraded and got the licesned version the problems went away, and I thought that was it. However, I just powered my mac down and back on again in a move, and installed a Java update (related to Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Flash) and after that I'm getting these errors again. I'm also on the Creative Cloud version of the Adobe Suite.
    I've tried creating a new folio but I get the same errors. I've added all the files one at a time and all of them give me the "Content generation error. Failed to open the file. Please confirm the file can be opened in the current version of InDesign." error, but they've all worked previously and were all created in CS6. This was literally working fine 30 minutes ago and since the computer restart and Java update it's all gone wrong.
    My theories thus far: something to do with Adobe accounts (I'm signed into one to access the Creative Cloud and a different one for DPS - that's how the other designers in the office work and they haven't had issues). Or something in InDesign got changed/reset when I restarted the computer that had been changed when I input the licesnse, and that's what's causing the issue. OR, and this is out there but as the paths to my files haven't changed, should the path to InDesign or the way my computer is connecting to it/the cloud have changed? I haven't touched the InDesign files themselves but that's about all I can think of.

    That thread also brings up a good point with computer accounts; like it says there, mine is also mobile managed. I'm waiting to talk to IT and see if that's the issue - although again, everything was working fine earlier and my account permissions haven't changed since then, so that might not be it.

    I have received an InDesign template from a client that was previously created by another design house. They have added their logo and company details to the template, which I would like to remove in order to add my own.
    I have no idea how to edit the material in the template.

    The previous template has guides and crop marks etc, along with the contact details from the previous firm that I would like to shift or move.
    Following the steps you've described opens the template, but the content is still not able to be edited.
    Ive checked the layers palette to see if the layer is locked etc, but they are not. I simply cant edit the content.

  • How can I generate a data merge that includes a barcode from excel spreadsheet to InDesign?

    Can you please advise if the following process is possible within InDesign CS 5.5? (Mac OS 10.8.2).
    We need to create a data merge that includes a barcode. The data merge is for several thousand records.
    We have a customer-supplied Excel spreadsheet that contains seven fields, one of which is a number that ultimately needs to print as a barcode when we make the data merge in InDesign.
    As you would expect, the conventional six fields data merge perfectly - but we can't find a way to make the barcode print correctly within the data merge.
    We have investigated several possible solutions without success.
    Some solutions suggest a plug-in for Excel to convert the number into a barcode whilst still in the spreadsheet - but this doesn't come across correctly when we import the CSV file into the InDesign data merge.
    We have investigated certain third party software applications but none provide the full solution we require. Some, for example, appear to create the barcode within the Excel spreadsheet but don't produce the barcode correctly when we data merge in InDesign; and some will allow us to create a one-off barcode within InDesign but have no automated way of retrieving the thousands of Excel numbers and turning them into barcodes.
    We have also come across possible 'font' solutions but have had no success with these either.
    For a previous job we needed to produce we outsourced to a specialist mailing company, who assured us they produced the whole job (very quickly) within InDesign. They, understandably, won't tell us how they did it. But, given the speed with which they produced the job for us, we imagine - with the correct software - the whole process is easy to do.
    Can you please advise?

  • How to Edit PDF from InDesign

    I have a user running Adobe Indesign CS2 saving a document as a PDF. They then want to give that PDF to User2 and have them be able to make simple changes to the text in that PDF using Adobe Acrobat 8. When User2 tries to edit the text in the PDF however, they receive the error "All or part of the selection has no available system font. You cannot add or delete text using the currently selected font." What is the best way to ensure that User2 can edit the text in the PDF? Do they need to install the appropriate fonts? Does Indesign have the ability to simply embed the fonts with the PDF so it can be edited by anyone?

    Have them use InDesign and suply the InDesign file.
    What you are trying to do is beyond what is intended using Acrobat. Even if they have the font, their success may be limited.
