Editing Text in files

In Xcode I would like to build a project which alters the text in system files, so I want to find a string and replace it with another string and then possibly keep track of the change in a visible way saya display or LED.
I found this very easy in a visual basic installer which very simply gives you the opportunity to do thi on an install. but I would like to produce an application to do this for various files. It must be fairly easy but How ???

We don't share every file we work on. I don't think I should have to save to CS6 "just in case?"
Well, you cannot open higher version files with the lower version. And if the lower version can access any of that content, then that content is from the PDF protion of the file.
So, yes, if you want to be able to work with both version on potentially all of your files, you will have to downsave them. I mean, what do you expect?
The text problem you describe is typical for what is happening when you open the PDF part of a file.

  • Remotely editing text files in Windows WinRM/PSExec/Powershell/cmd

    Hi!
How can I remotely edit a text file in Windows?
I am running and administering a number of Windows 7 workstations and Windows Server 2012 machines. I would like to be able to remotely edit text files on any of these machines. I can connect to any of these machines via psexec or powershell remoting. I
can also connect via rdp, but for the workstations I would rather not kick the user off unless I absolutely have to.
For example, we manage state configuration using
Salt. Local configuration files are stored in C:/salt/conf. I would like to be able to edit these config files on the fly.
This question on Stack Overflow covers the same topic, but none of the answers are particularly satisfying. Some of the possible solutions
    are:
Remote Desktop: as I say, I would rather not have to kick a user off their workstation
Edit a file over a UNC path: this only works for files on a share, and setting up arbitrary shares for quick edits seems like a bad idea.
Install some manner of ftp or ssh server on all the target computers. This would certainly work, but it is it necessary with WinRM already active? I feel like installing and configuring extra software across all the machines in my organisation would be
    a last resort.
Edit with a command line editor (e.g. vim, emacs) over a remote powershell session. This doesn't work. I don't understand the technical details, but a powershell remote session isn't interactive in the same way that ssh connections are.
Edit using powershell's -replace operator, out-file and add-content cmdlets. This works, but is hardly the same as a fully featured text editor.
Retrieve content from the remote, edit locally, and post back to the remote. This works, and is arguably the best solution I've found. Code sample from SO:
    PS C:\Users\Meredith> Invoke-Command -Session $ps -ScriptBlock {get-content c:/inetpub/myapp/web.config} > web.config
    edit web config
    PS C:\Users\Meredith> get-content web.config | Invoke-Command -Session $ps -ScriptBlock {set-content c:/inetpub/myapp/web.config}
The last two options are the workflow that I've been using for now. Regex replacement for very simple changes, and copying to local and editing there for more complicated ones. Neither is ideal, but they work. It just feels incredibly old fashioned.
I'm considering writing a plugin to my editor of choice (vim) to perform the remote fetch and save, to make my workflow a little bit smoother. Before I try that, I just want to know if there's anything that I've missed, or misunderstood.
    Cheers

    What is the "redirector"?
I posted the same question to Stack Overflow, and was told about administrative shares. I wasn't aware of this, and it's exactly what I wanted. I can open the filetree of a remote machine with the path \\machinename\c$\. Perfectly simple, now that I know
    the answer.

  • What can open/edit an .ai file TEXT layer (besides Illustrator)?

so, i have CS6 on Mac (OS Mavericks).
my Mac took a nose dive recently. long story super short... i have a new mac & re-installed my CS6 on it.
but, in order to launch Illustrator, it requires that i install JAVA too. and i just really don't wanna do that. picky & trivial of me? maybe; but it's a desire i have. and that's a different topic i don't really wish to get in to in THIS thread.
additionally, i've just grown more & more irritated & unhappy with Adobe's apps (also a discussion for a different thread).
so i just thought i'd see if there were any new vector graphics apps out there that could fulfill my needs. the most important of which would be to open my pre-existing .ai files (check: there are several good ones - like Sketch, iDraw, Bluetail, Intaglio, Inkscape, etc) AND be able to directly edit pre-existing text in its layers -BUT- none of them seem to be able to edit text layers (and yes, i have the same fonts). they all appear to open the ai file as a raster image or vector image, but no layers nor editable text.
so i'm just wondering if i've missed something or if it's true - that the proprietary ai format is unusable fully in any other app - or is there one i've missed or a method i failed to find. (?)
    thanks much.

The only application that seems to be able to open at least nearly up to date AI files is Corel Draw. It should open CS4 or maybe even CS5.
But even then some types of objects won't be fully editable.

  • Editing a PDF file with Acrobat XI pro... some "text" is not selectable and vanishes upon saving

    Hi folks.
I've googled around for a few hours, but I'm completely stumped with this one.
I'm trying to edit a .pdf file that was generated from Word 2007.  Mostly it edits fine, but for reason some of what appears to be text isn't selectable with the text and image editor... in fact it doesn't even have a bounding box around it.  When I move around the document or save it in acrobat pro, the "text" then vanishes.
I include a dropbox link to a partial screenshot image which shows what I'm talking about.  You can see that the italic bold A doesn't have a box around it in some cases.
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/42i8xms78lvw12b/Screenshot%202014-02-07%2011.19.07.png
Can anybody kindly shed some light on what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks!

    Hi Bill.  Thanks for replying.
Unfortunately, I don't have the option of using the original DOCX file.  The author lost it, leaving only the pdf around
I'm using AA XI 11.0.06.  Upgraded this morning.  That's running on Windows 7 Ultimate 64.
I get the boundary boxes by clicking on the 'edit text and images' tool, and they appear.  Or don't in this case
I only need to change a few characters in the file.   However, even just opening up the file in AA and then saving, the "A = " "text" gets deleted.
Could it perhaps be something to do with embedded or missing maths fonts on my machine?  I mean, I don't get any warnings, just can't do anything with the A and AB italic bold text.
    Thanks!

  • Editing text in pdf file

I just bought Adobe Acrobat and was told that I would be able edit text in a pdf file I open. However I can't figure out how to do this?
I can select the text but can't edit/change it?

The Adobe Reader for SymbianOS isn't a PDF editor. You'd need Acrobat
for that, using the Text Touch-up Tool.

  • Editing text in Photoshop CS3 file causes crash. File originally created in Photoshop CS6

Trying to edit text in Photoshop CS3 file causes a crash - Tried on multiple PC's
File originally created in Photoshop CS6 with "Maximise PSD/PSB File Compatibility" set at "Always".
Document size A4, using Arial Regular. RGB. 8Bits. 72dpi
    Colour Profile: sRGB IEC61966
Multi business licence for CS3 and CS6 Design Standard/Premium/Master Collection all on PC
    Please Help!

Interestingly I have found that if I modify a document in CS6 from an earlier CS3-CS5 document and save it - it works fine. But if I create a new document in CS6 the issue persists.
Looks like I will be modifying old documents for the time being
Would be grateful for some advise eon this.

  • I need to edit text in a jpeg file.  How do I do that?

I need to edit text in a jpeg file.  How do I do that?

Unfortunately you can't. A JPEG is a flat raster (pixel-based) image file which has no awareness of "text" inside it. You could try to erase the text and graphic under it and then recreate the text, but it's best to do so using a mastering format such as PSD (Photoshop) or PXM (Pixelmator), so that you can export as JPEG but keep your layered master for later editing.

  • Need to edit text in pdf file created in Illustrator CS6

I need for someone else to be able to edit text in a pdf I created from Illustrator. They have full acrobat and should be able to edit it. I have tried it myself to test before sending it but it's not working. The original file was created in Illustrator CS6 and saved as a pdf (text has not been created outlines). I opened the file in acrobat and saved it out as an extended file to be able to edit the text but no luck. Need to be able to highlight existing text and change it. I have tried edit text tool but instead of a selection box around each line of text, it puts a selection box around all of the text. I can highlight the text and delete it but am unable to change it. Each individual text line needs to be editable. Is there something I need to do differently in Illustrator to get it to work correctly in Acrobat?
If it helps- the file is a calendar and they need to be able to change the dates and events that are already there.

This really isn't a suitable use of Acrobat. You should all be using the same editing tool (i.e. Illustrator).
Extending files reduces the amount of editing Acrobat can do, it does not increase it.
The tool to edit text from Illustrator would be Edit Document Text. There is no guarantee it will break up nicely into lines, it's trying to help by making paragraph text.
Conceivably you could use a form for this (fill in the blank for dates) but really, you should be using the same tool. Not necessarily Illustrator, more Excel or specialist Calendar software.

  • Can't edit text in a client's file... Wisdom appreciated!

A client has sent me a file (PDF) that contains various elements: typography that's editable, illustrations that are editable, and some typography that does not seem to be editable in Illustrator.
The apparently non-editable type shows up each character as an individual element, but not as outlines; the characters are in a bounding box but if I click View>outline, I don't see the character's outlines I just see an empty rectangle.
The file came from an artworker and I don't know if he's got a different version of illustrator to me or what...
Keen to sort this withough having to re-type out all of the detail...
    Any suggestions?!
    Thanks

Likely a different version. Since you don't see the outlines OR the editable text in "Outline" mode, that tells me the text is embedded as a graphic or Symbol. Look in the Symbol panel and see if there are characters there.
Can you "Jump into" an individual character by double-clicking?
What do you see listed in the Layer panel for each element?

  • Editing text in all PDF files

    Hello,
I am very new to Acrobat and am trying to change some text in some of my documents, but can't seem to be able to do so. I am using Acrobat X Pro and i use the "Edit Document Text" tool, but the cursor does not change to the text editing cursor. I tried opening other PDF documents and it seems that I am able to edit text in some PDF files, but not the text in others. For the one that I am trying to edit, I did the "Recognize Text" function. I can high-light the text and even search the document for certain words, but can't seem to change any of the text. I can select the text to cross out or put a comment in them, but still can't remove some words/letters & retype.
This is really frustrating, as these documents are the only reason I wanted Acrobat X - so I can edit a few words on them.
    Please help!

Nono, I've been trying to say that I CAN high-light it. I can high-light any text in there, select it for commentating, do the strike-out notes on it. I can even do ctrl+F and search for a word that's within the document and it will find that word. There is no "original" PDF because that IS the original.
I can do everything else to the text except actually edit it (basically deleting or changing the words).
This is frustrating because other files that people send me that are generated via an automated system are editable, but my own PDF files are not, and I want to know what that difference is and how I can change it so that I can edit my own PDF files.

  • Editing text from pdf file

Adobe Reader does not allow editing the text of a PDF document. You will need to get Acrobat on your Windows or Mac to do that.

    Hi pilothorse,
To edit a PDF file you need to use Acrobat. If you don't have Acrobat, you can try it for free for 30 days. See www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html for more information.

  • Editing text file on application server

    Hello,
I have created a utility in which I can move files from one folder to another. Now we also need a option by which I can edit text file on the server folders. Is there a function module by which I can edit text from application server ?
    Regards,
    Rajesh.

With OPEN DATASET and READ you can load them into an internal table. Next put them on screen in lets say the text editor (enjoy SAP Controls). This is one way of doing this, other way would be:
Upload data with OPEN DATASET into internal table, download file to local drive (cl_gui_frontendservices=>gui_download), open it with notepad (for example) edit it and save. Next upload file into your program (cl_gui_frontendservices=>gui_upload) and download it to server again (OPEN DATASET and TRANSFER).
If available you can also use transaction CG3Z and CG3Y.

  • Read and Edit Text Files

I wanted to find out if there is a way to read linux
configuration files, edit parameters in them and save them using
coldfusion. I know PHP has the capability to do this, but I don't
know if CF does and how powerful it is.

If it's plain text, just write it into a textarea and let
your users edit it there. When they submit, use cffile to overwrite
    the text file.
There are other ways to allow users to edit text in a web
app, such as the "contenteditable" attribute in IE, but the basic
    idea remains the same.
Or do you mean that the app will alter the files
automatically? If that's the case, then regular expressions would
likely be the way to go.
