El-ignored / Tomcat 5.5.4

By default, my Tomcat 5.5.4 does not evaluate EL expressions in JSPs. So I've put the following into my web.xml:
<jsp-property-group>
   <url-pattern>*.jsp</url-pattern>
   <el-ignored>false</el-ignored>
</jsp-property-group>But Tomcat still does not evaluate the EL expressions. Then I used
<%@ page isELIgnored="false" %> directly in all the JSPs, which works. I would like to avoid the statement in all the JSP, so why does the configuration in the web.xml not work?
Any advice?
Thank you.

Your web.xml probably declares itself to be version 2.3 compliant
ie
looks like this at the top:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE web-app PUBLIC "-//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD Web Application 2.3//EN" "http://java.sun.com/dtd/web-app_2_3.dtd">
<web-app>
...If you use this "old" header, then EL evaluation is disabled for backwards compatibility with existing sites.
Change it to this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<web-app xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee"
    xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
    xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee/web-app_2_4.xsd"
    version="2.4">

  • SetTimestamp in Tomcat + Oracle 9i ignores milliseconds

    Hi all,
I have a problem when using setTimestamp in Tomcat + Oracle 9i becouse it ignores milliseconds in the database.
Its a J2EE app that runs on Tomcat and OC4J as a server and Postgres and Oracle 9i as a DDBB. It works OK with OC4J + Oracle but it ignores the milliseconds when I use Tomcat.
    Im using setTimestamp(java.sql.Timestamp)
    Driver used is classes12.jar, jdk 1.4.1, ...
    Any Idea?
    Thanks

    1- try ojdb14.jar instead of classes12.jar
2- add this to the context of your web app:
              <parameter>
                   <name>connectionProperties</name>
                   <value>oracle.jdbc.V8Compatible=true</value>
              </parameter>3- i don't think this is a tomcat problem:

  • Tomcat 4.1.10 ignoring WebApp's WEB-INF/lib/*.jar

I've been bashing my head against this for two days now:
    1. Got a webapp deployed in tomcat, with a whole bunch of jars that sit in the /<webapp>/WEB-INF/lib
    2. In web.xml, I instantiate a servlet that performs cache-loading - the servlet class is in of the jars from point 1 ^ - and it works fine, finding all the classes that it needs, etc.
    3. A test page, with nothing more than a page import directive of the same package that the servlet from point. 2 uses - fails with package {xxx} does not exist...
    Any help is GREATLY apreciated!

Thanx for all your suggestions, nothing seems to have solved the problem and since I had it working fine under tomcat 3, I'm quite convinced that this is a bonafide bug.
I'll award 1 duke dollar to each, since none have solved the problem.

  • Streaming CSV via Apache/ Tomcat  with Mod Proxy

I have Apache hooked up to Tomcat using mod_proxy and attempts to stream a CSV file from a Struts action via tomcat fails.
Using the tomcat port localhost:8080/testappp the streaming works fine but for some reason it does not work via the apache url
Build is Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 on Apache 2.0.52-25 and Tomcat 5.5
Below are pastes of the apache conf file and tomcat server.xml
    Thanks
    # httpd.conf
    # Based upon the NCSA server configuration files originally by Rob McCool.
    # This is the main Apache server configuration file. It contains the
    # configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
    # See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/> for detailed information about
    # the directives.
    # Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
    # what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
    # consult the online docs. You have been warned.
    # The configuration directives are grouped into three basic sections:
    # 1. Directives that control the operation of the Apache server process as a
    # whole (the 'global environment').
    # 2. Directives that define the parameters of the 'main' or 'default' server,
    # which responds to requests that aren't handled by a virtual host.
    # These directives also provide default values for the settings
    # of all virtual hosts.
    # 3. Settings for virtual hosts, which allow Web requests to be sent to
    # different IP addresses or hostnames and have them handled by the
    # same Apache server process.
    # Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
    # of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
    # server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do not begin
    # with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
    # with ServerRoot set to "/etc/httpd" will be interpreted by the
    # server as "/etc/httpd/logs/foo.log".
    ### Section 1: Global Environment
    # The directives in this section affect the overall operation of Apache,
    # such as the number of concurrent requests it can handle or where it
    # can find its configuration files.

    # (available at <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mpm_common.html#lockfile>);

  • Tomcat to Weblogic

    Hi there,
I really need help here. Trying to deploy a tomcat web application on Weblogic, and didn't work.
    What I did:
1, upload the webapp folder of the web application, onto Weblogic / user_projects/ domain / base_domain
2, login into Console, find the webapp folder, and deploy it in the AdminServer
3, try browse the web application, and got all different kind of errors (Unable to open database connection, or Unable to compile the stylesheet, or Sytax errors..)
I have written up a simple mysql test servlet and deploy it and test it and it works......
I also got whole bunch of errors when AdminServer starts up:
Ignoring: unable to load class:java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.pageseeder.review.NewReviewExplorer at: weblogic.xml.schema.binding.util.ClassUtil.loadClass(ClassUtil.java:76)
When processing WebService module 'webapp'. Failed to load servlet Class: com.pageseeder.review.ReviewSpace
Really out of my mind, first time using Weblogic, and have no idea where to start debug this issue.
Please any ideas? I can open the server port and give the login/pwd if needed.
    Thanks!

    Hi Jay,
This is a great information and really points me to a right direction. However, things are always not going smooth as I imagine, once I put in:
    <container-descriptor>
    <prefer-web-inf-classes>true</prefer-web-inf-classes>
    </container-descriptor>
into weblogic.xml, my application failed to load. Here is what I got from screen:

              Sessions.
saveOnRestart: If true, all active sessions will be saved
to the Store when Catalina is shutdown, regardless of
other settings. All Sessions found in the Store will be
loaded on startup. Sessions past their expiration are
    ignored in both cases.
maxActiveSessions: If 0 or greater, having too many active
sessions will result in some being swapped out. minIdleSwap
limits this. -1 means unlimited sessions are allowed.
0 means sessions will almost always be swapped out after
use - this will be noticeably slow for your users.
minIdleSwap: Sessions must be idle for at least this long
(in seconds) before they will be swapped out due to
maxActiveSessions. This avoids thrashing when the site is
highly active. -1 or 0 means there is no minimum - sessions
can be swapped out at any time.
maxIdleSwap: Sessions will be swapped out if idle for this
long (in seconds). If minIdleSwap is higher, then it will
override this. This isn't exact: it is checked periodically.
-1 means sessions won't be swapped out for this reason,
although they may be swapped out for maxActiveSessions.
If set to >= 0, guarantees that all sessions found in the
Store will be loaded on startup.
maxIdleBackup: Sessions will be backed up (saved to the Store,
but left in active memory) if idle for this long (in seconds),
and all sessions found in the Store will be loaded on startup.
If set to -1 sessions will not be backed up, 0 means they
should be backed up shortly after being used.
To clear sessions from the Store, set maxActiveSessions, maxIdleSwap,
and minIdleBackup all to -1, saveOnRestart to false, then restart
    Catalina.

  • Apache and Tomcat

    hi
i have installed apache 2.0 and i am trying to map tomcat into it by using the JK2 module. i have configured the httpd.conf file and workers file.
but it gives me the following error
    Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.
    Apache/2.0.49 (Win32) mod_jk2/2.0.4 Server at localhost Port 80
my httpd.conf file is as follows
    # with ServerRoot set to "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2" will be interpreted by the
    # server as "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/logs/foo.log".
    # NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
    # instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
    # If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which Apache.exe is located
    # will be used by default. It is recommended that you always supply
    # an explicit drive letter in absolute paths, however, to avoid
    # confusion.
    ### Section 1: Global Environment
    # The directives in this section affect the overall operation of Apache,
    # such as the number of concurrent requests it can handle or where it
    # can find its configuration files.
    # ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
    # configuration, error, and log files are kept.
    # NOTE! If you intend to place this on an NFS (or otherwise network)
    # mounted filesystem then please read the LockFile documentation (available
    # at <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mpm_common.html#lockfile>);
    # you will save yourself a lot of trouble.
    # Do NOT add a slash at the end of the directory path.
    ServerRoot "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2"
    # ScoreBoardFile: File used to store internal server process information.
    # If unspecified (the default), the scoreboard will be stored in an
    # anonymous shared memory segment, and will be unavailable to third-party
    # applications.
    # If specified, ensure that no two invocations of Apache share the same
    # scoreboard file. The scoreboard file MUST BE STORED ON A LOCAL DISK.
    #ScoreBoardFile logs/apache_runtime_status
    # PidFile: The file in which the server should record its process
    # identification number when it starts.
    PidFile logs/httpd.pid
    # Timeout: The number of seconds before receives and sends time out.
    Timeout 300
    # KeepAlive: Whether or not to allow persistent connections (more than
    # one request per connection). Set to "Off" to deactivate.
    KeepAlive On
    # MaxKeepAliveRequests: The maximum number of requests to allow
    # during a persistent connection. Set to 0 to allow an unlimited amount.
    # We recommend you leave this number high, for maximum performance.
    MaxKeepAliveRequests 100
    # KeepAliveTimeout: Number of seconds to wait for the next request from the
    # same client on the same connection.
    KeepAliveTimeout 15

The web service is using jax-ws and is an soap rpc service. I have noticed that the log refers to XMLStreamReaderFactory.woodstox
which should be XMLStreamReaderFactory.Woodstox (upper case W), but i dont know if this is significant, and if it is I dont know where i can change this.
Any help would be much appreciated.

The access denied message was caused by restrictive security settings in the tomcat configuration. In this case the test server being used is a managed server provided by a third party so at our request they allowed the actions and now the web app deploys successfully.

  • Stupid Error in Compiling JSP on Tomcat 4.1

    Hi,
I know I am missing something stupid, but I am not able to compile/view a simple JSP.
The code of the JSP is
    <%@ page language="java" import="builder.*" errorPage="" %>
    <html>
    <%builder.MenuBuilder menuBuilder = new builder.MenuBuilder("http://amitabh.pic.com.kw/navmenu.xml", out, "\t\t\t");%>
    <head><body>
    <%menuBuilder.generateHTML();%>
..And I am getting the following error
[javac] Since fork is true, ignoring compiler setting.
    [javac] Compiling 1 source file
[javac] Since fork is true, ignoring compiler setting.
[javac] E:\ApacheGroup\Tomcat4.1 \work\Standalone\localhost\aktest\NavTable_jsp.java:7: package builder does not exist
    [javac] import builder.*;
    [javac] ^
[javac] E:\ApacheGroup\Tomcat4.1\work\Standalone\localhost\aktest\NavTable_jsp.java:54: package builder does not exist
    [javac]     builder.MenuBuilder menuBuilder = new builder.MenuBuilder("http://amitabh.pic.com.kw/navmenu.xml", out, "\t\t\t");
    [javac] ^
[javac] E:\ApacheGroup\Tomcat4.1\work\Standalone\localhost\aktest\NavTable_jsp.java:54: package builder does not exist
    [javac]     builder.MenuBuilder menuBuilder = new builder.MenuBuilder("http://amitabh.pic.com.kw/navmenu.xml", out, "\t\t\t"); [javac] ^
    [javac] 3 errors
The above mention code are the only JSP script on the page.
I have package builder defined under WEB-INF\classes and the class MenuBuilder and all related classes are in the pacakge and are compiled.
I am using Tomcat 4.1.24 running on JDK 1.4.1 (build 1.4.1_02-b06).
Other JSP pages in the same context which does not reffer any class under WEB-INF\classes are being displayed so are pages under examples context.
Can anybody help me out on what i am missing.
    Thanks in advance
    Amitabh

    Hi,
AFAIK, builer package shoud be under WEB-INF\classes directory or the context. It is under that direcory.
As far as adding the package to system classpath or Tomcat classpath, I dont want to do that as it would contaminate the classpath of other applications/contexts.
The applications server is supposed to automatically add WEB-INF\classes into the classpath of the context. And its working for other context.
There has to be other solution.
    Regards
    Amitabh

  • Jsp:include doesn't work with Tomcat & IIS

    Hi, Guys,
I installed IIS4.0 and Tomcat in my windows NT system. http://localhost/examples/jsp/index.html works fine.
When I load http://localhost:8080/about.jsp, it's also working fine. But when I load http://localhost/about.jsp, it will ignore the part which the line is display as
    <%String topName = "/servlet/topServlet";%>
    <jsp:include page="<%=topName%>" flush="true"/>
The other part will work just as a html file. And I didn't get any error message.
Would can tell me how to figure out this problem. Thank in advanced very much!

Oh, God, why not tell me earlier!!!!!! I do use tomcat 3.1 and it just support servlet. I have no way out but modify all my jsp:include to encoding into a servlet page. I almost re-do all my work. But anyway, thank you! Next time I will know.

  • Problem installing and configuring Tomcat

    Hi
I am quite new with Java and feel like a typical dumb blonde. OK, I am using an 'ancient ' version of the Java Development Kit, which is j2sdk1.4.1_01 (for the purpose of my studies, though I know there is a newer version available).
I am also using Windows XP Professional Edition.
I need to install Tomcat for my studies and asignmentd and have a CD which was given via my training institution. This is Apache Tomcat version 4.1.18 (yes, i know there are newer version available).
I have followed the installation steps they have given, installed it to C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Tomcat 4.1
I have set the JAVA_HOME as follow to C:\j2sdk (in the envir0nment variables)
    and
    CLASSPATH as follow to: .;C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Tomcat 4.1\common\lib\servlet.jar
(or append \common\lib\servlet.jar to the location where you installed Tomcat) _
what do they mean by this and where, how ?
Interesting enough they say the above CLASPATH should show as System variables, but mine does not appear there, but instead as user variables for me.
OK. I installed everything and got the shortcuts icons for "Start Tomcat" and "Stop Tomcat"
Now I needed to test the Tomcat Installation. I was asked to double click the "Start Tomcat "icon. Minimize the command prompt window opened by Tomcat, then to start my web browswer ( I am using Internet Explorer version 7). Don't know if one should be online or oflline ? When the browser windows open, type http://localhost:8080/ in the Adress box and then press the ENTER key.
I should have received a webpage showing Apache Jakarta Project indicating setup for Tomcat was sucessful.
    Well, i don;t get it.
First of all, when clicking the shortcut icon "Start Icon" it gives a message and tries to locate java.exe. I don;t know where this should be located.
Thenthey browswer does not give me a page to say setup is sucessful. instead i get
    the following error message :
    "Apache Tomcat/4.1.18 - Error reportHTTP Status 500 -

    Hi there
    Thanks for your input.
Phew, things are getting more complicated :(
OK, I did a search for the JRE. It is located at C:\j2sdk1.4.1_01No, that's the JDK, but that's what JAVA_HOME should point to.
My Apache Tomcat is in C:\Program Files\Apache GroupTrouble. I try not to install things in directory names with spaces in them. Just my personal quirk.
My j2sdk which contains a doc file is in C:\What?
My j2sdk1.4.1_01 is in C:\What? You said it was in C:\j2sdk1.4.1_01 above.
    My environment variables for:
    JAVA_HOME is C:\j2sdkOK.
    CLASSPATH is .;C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Tomcat 4.1\common\lib\servlet.jar
(but with this CLASSPATH ,I cant get to appear in the system variables. It only wants to appear in the user variables for myself. Should it be in the system variable, and if so, how do I get it there?)Wrong. Delete it. You don't need a system CLASSPATH environment variable. Tomcat ignores it, as does every Java EE app server. Every IDE ignores it, too. Useless. Worse than useless, because it deceives noobs into thinking that their CLASSPATH is "right".
OK, and if I had to set the CLASSPATH for CATALINA, the ni did it as C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Tomcat 4.1\server\lib
don't know if this is correct. It too, only appears in my user variables and not in system variables.Wrong.
OK, I as said I have a short cut created on my desktop, "Start Tomcat" as well as "Stop Tomcat".No, open up a command shell, navigate to the Tomcat /bin directory, and run the start script. You'll be able to see the error messages that way.
Arrrgggghhh, why is Tomcat such hell ?Why are you using such an old JDK and an old version of Tomcat? You have JDK 1.4 and Tomcat 4.x. We're up to 6 and 6, respectively. Why are you staying two versions behind?

  • Problem with Tomcat 5.0

    Hi there,
I have a .java file inside \WEB-INF\classes\ directory. This .java file has a "public static void main" method that calls al the other methods in the class.
I want to know if its possible for me to create an JSP file to call this .java file. If so how can i do it?
    Thanks!!

It's possible to call main, but not a good idea.
