Em dash keep with next word

PC Vista, InDesignCS5 v7.0.3.
in cs3 text composer, the em dash wanted to go to next line with text, which didn't work so well with english, but with spanish text it worked great (em dash being used as the 'raya')
now, in CS5 the new composer wants to keep em dash at end of line if it can & drop text down to next line...works good for english, not so much for spanish.
So far, the only idea I have is adding a character style 'no-break' too keep these em dashes with their spanish text.
Any other alternative/work around for this will be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Joiner? Do you mean non-breaking space? That would make sense. 200D is a zero-width joiner, which doesn't make sense here - it's used in Arabic and other scripts in which characters may or may not be joined (with ligatures) depending on context. I just tested it a bit, and I find that it doesn't do what you expect; it does not act like No Break, or like a non-breaking space, or a non-breaking hyphen.
How about a zero-width nonbreaking space? Oh, never mind, it seems like Indy has reserved that for an index marker, dangit.
How about ugly hacks? Like, say, two non-breaking hyphens kerned together to make 'em look like a single en dash? You could do it with a GREP style.

  • Index level 4 para style - why keep with next line?

When InDesign generates an index in the usual way, it creates a default paragraph style for each level. The first line indent of each level is 7 pts. greater than the one that precedes it. In addition to that formatting, the fourth and final level has a keep option: keep with next line (1 line). Can anyone explain the rationale for that? Am I missing something obvious again?

I've created a couple of indexes, but I don't think I've ever ventured as far south to include a fourth level.
Besides. Huh ... relying on InDesign to create default paragraph styles? I handcraft mine before I need'em.
Me too, I was just re-creating index generation via scripting, and for checking and user-familiarity wanted exactly the same formatting as you get when you generate an index in the usual way. I couldn't see what purpose was served by that keep option in level 4.
I suppose there might be some situations in which all four levels are used, especially if you follow the rule of thumb than there shouldn't be more than six locators for each index entry. Maybe a big book on taxonomy? As I recall, Microsoft Word allows up to six levels.

  • PDF Creation: Is it possible to "keep with next"

    Hi,
Our web designer is turning html text into a pdf. The one issue we are getting stuck with is page breaks. We have figured out how to manually install page breaks, but is it possible to to insert a "keep with next" command.
The problem we are having is that we have headers and footers on images that we wish to keep with the images when the images break the page. Right now, they often end up on a different page. Is there any way to program these lines to "keep togeather" somehow when the page breaks?
    Thanks!

It is in the /iTunes/iTunes media/TV Shows/ folder.
You can only view TV Shows in iTunes so why do you need to "hunt" them anywhere?
If you really need to, you can select the TV Show (or movie or music or podcast, etc.) right click, Show in Finder.

  • Subtitle - keep with next

    Hello,
    i have InDesign CS6 8.02 on mac os x 10.6.8
when I export a file to epub happens that some subtitles remain on the bottom of the page and the following text continues on the next page.
in indesign in "keep option" I select the option "keep with next 1 line" but it doesn't work.
Can you tell me is there a way to keep a subtitle with next paragraph in epub?
    Thank you in advance

I'd open the epub file and I'd add the CSS rule "page-break-after:avoid;" to the proper class or I'd add it into the CSS aditional declarations at exporting as epub 2.

  • Equivalent to Word's "Keep With Next" function?

I am writing a technical manual, and have a fairly long document with a bunch of tier-numbered steps. I am in the process of inserting the screen captures into the document, and I cannot figure out how to keep the correct numbered step with the image. I am cutting and pasting the images out of a Word document into Pages, then selecting the image, going to the Object Placement inspector and selecting the next-to-last icon under "Object Causes Wrap," which centers my image. However, I don't want any images to be at the top of a page; I always want the referring paragraph to appear just above the image.
I've tried inserting a page break before the appropriate numbered step, but Pages inserts a new, blank numbered step before the page break (i.e., the last item on the previous page is a blank, numbered step).
What am I doing wrong here?

    Hi Andy,
You're very close to a solution. Set the text insertion cursor on the line with the numbered blank and in the Text Inspector, List Tab, set Bullets and Numbering to "No Bullets". That should do it from where you are now.

  • Is there a Non Break space or Keep with?

Is there a "Non Break space" or "Keep with next word"?
In a data merge scenario some records need to stay together such as <<Year>>.<<Make>>  and Vin <<VIN>>
Is there a character to keep these together?

You could make the spaces between them non-breaking, (rt-click > Insert White Space > Non-Breaking Space), or apply a no-break Character Style to the fields and the spaces between them.

When printed they become Left Facing Arrows printed on top of the first letter of the next word -- The letter "O" in the above example would have the Left Arrow printed on top of it.
Don't know whether it's the drivers or the Raster.

Thank you for the information. The fact that this is a newer computer is a little concerning. I believe upgrading to Windows 8.1 is a could test. If the same issues occur on Windows 8.1, this proves that the hardware isn't functioning the way it should. If this issue is removed when installing Windows 8.1, this proves that something was wrong with the current operating system. I would definitely give this a shot. Windows 8.1 isn't a lot different than Windows 8. The main difference is that Windows 8.1 has a different Start menu then what appears on Windows 7 and older. That's the main difference. I can understand it would be a little uncomfortable, coming from Windows XP. Anyway, please try updating to Windows 8.1 and let me know how it goes. If I find some extra information on this, I will let you know. Have a great day! Mario

  • Did "Keep with following paragraph" get fixed?

In 08 if you use "Keep with following paragraph" on a paragraph (or style for a paragraph) that falls at the bottom of a page, Pages won't push it to the next page to keep it with the next paragraph.
This bug was present (and reported) since version 1.0 of Pages. So we're at what, now...3 or 4 full versions and a couple years, without a fix, for such a huge, glaring pagination bug.
I own 08 and want to upgrade to 09. Can someone please tell me if this pagination bug was fixed?
    Thanks!

    santranyc wrote:
In 08, the behavior is as follows:
Say Paragraph A is followed by Paragraph B.
You set Paragraph A with "Keep with following paragraph" to make sure A and B are always on the same page.
If Paragraph A falls at the bottom of a page, however, Pages does NOT push it to the next page, as it should (according to the fact that you set the attribute "Keep with following paragraph" to be turned ON for Paragraph A).
Try the following in Pages '08.
    1. Fill a page with empty paragraphs.
    2. On the very last line on that page, type "hello".
    3. In the Inspector, set it to "Keep with following paragraph".
    4. Hit return at the end of "hello", to create a new paragraph.
The new paragraph is created and hello follows it to the new page.
    5. Remove "Keep with following paragraph" from "hello".
The word hello moves back to page one.
That is the behaviour. It does not cover all cases you want, but it works as it does.
Now, still in '08 do the following.
    1. Three lines from the end of page 1, add three paragraphs, each with the word "hello".
    2. Add a few more paragraphs of the same kind, so you spill over to next page.
    3. Click on "Keep..." for all the hello-lines.
Nothing happens. I guess you expect something to happen.
Now, in '09, do the same:
    1. Three lines from the end of page 1, add three paragraphs, each with the word "hello".
    2. Add a few more paragraphs of the same kind, so you spill over to next page.
    3. Click on "Keep..." for all the hello-lines.
Now all the hello-lines are moved over to page 2.
Is there any other case you worry about?

  • Keep with Following Paragraph isn't working

I am creating a doc in Word Processing Mode with various Styles. My header Styles all have Keep with Following Paragraph checked to keep them with the body text. Unfortunately, this isn't working – at page breaks I have headers that sit at the bottom of one page and their body text is at the start of the next page.
Any idea what's going on and how I can fix this? It's a 300 pg doc so I'd rather not have to fix them manually.
    thanks in advance,
    Dancing Sweetpea

Update: It's only happening when I have a shape before it (I have some grey call out boxes in the doc) and the insert for the box is at the beginning of the header line. If I move it, it fixes the problem. Silly me.
But I do have a related question. I have inline images (with a left justified wrap) that sit to the left of a text header — the two go together as a image/text header. The image is slightly smaller in height than the text, so if the image/text header happens to be at the very end of a page, the text moves to the top of the next page (b/c it has a keep with following paragraph) but the image stays at the bottom of the previous page. Is there any way to lock the image to the text header or otherwise keep the two together if they fall at a page break?

  • "Keep with following paragraph" not working consistently

I am a pretty heavy Pages user, and have experienced an issue in multiple documents. When clicking the "Keep with following paragraph" it occasionally does not force the paragraph to flow to the next page as it should. It appears to happen when I click the second paragraph in the series.
In other words, if there are 2 paragraphs at the bottom of one page and I want them to flow to the next page, I click "Keep with following.." on the last paragraph and it goes to the top of the next page. But when I do the same for the next one (now the last paragraph on the first page) it does not go to the top of the next page.
I don't have any other forced page breaks or things checked that would keep it on the first page. Can't figure out why it won't "Keep with the following paragraph?"

    DarrenBrackett wrote:
Pretty sure I understand exactly what it is supposed to do...you need to think through what you are saying. The help describes exactly what I am trying to do.
I have three paragraphs, two at the bottom of the first page and one at the top of the second page. I want all three to stay together on the page. When I activate "Keep with following paragraph" for the paragraph at the bottom of the first page - it should then jump to the top of the next page (and it does).
The problem is when you do this for the third paragraph (now the last paragraph on the first page). When activating "Keep with following paragraph" for this one, it does NOT go to the top of the next page. It does nothing.
I correctly understood what you wrote.
I repeat that what you describe is exactly what the program is designed to do.
It is not designed to keep three paragraphs together only two.
If you want to move three paragraphs, you must insert a page break by hand.
Or maybe better, don't use a Paragraph break but a soft return between two of them as I did in this sample:

  • New MBP, and am having memory trouble errors with MS Word 2004

    Hi,
I know this has been talked about before, but I'm not sure where to post this question. I have a new MBP, with a full version of Word (no previous trial software installed). I have been trying to copy and past basic text files from Yahoo mail, to create a book of emails of sorts. My file size has been approaching my memory capacity (basic setup). Does it not create a swap file and let you keep going if you approach the limits of the onboard memory? I understand it will run a bit slower, but I'm only moving text files and nothing else. Why the proverbial memory/disk full error messages? Does it have anything to do with the software being non universal code?
Do I need to get rid of temporary files, as Im copying and pasting alot? If so, how?
Anyone have the same trouble, and have a clear solution? I could also swear my MPB is running alot slower with Word than I would have expected.
Any help you can give me would b appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave

I’ll try to answer your questions briefly without going into too much detail. First of all, I think the error message you are seeing is generated by MS Word and not your operating system. That particular error, and other similar ones, are quite common in Word in particular situations and are the result of a known bug.
As far as I know, there is no fix, but there are several work-arounds. The bug has to do with the number of temporary files that get created when working with large Word files. As you might guess, the larger your file, the larger the temp files, and they will quickly fill up your existing RAM, which then causes the error that generates the message. You have to delete the temp files---you can do that by saving and closing your file, then restart it. There are some scripts you can run, but that is beyond what I want to get into here (and usually is not necessary).
The other problem is that by copying and pasting text from Yahoo Mail, you are not pasting simple text---you are pasting all the HTML code, formatting, and everything else that is contained in that text. And Word saves it all, then adds its own formatting and other code---leading to corrupt files sooner or later.
And then, to make it all worse, if your file is as large as you say it is (close to system memory in size), that is one huge Word file, and Word does not handle really large files very well, especially Word 2004, but all versions of Word, Windows versions included, have trouble with large files.
Word does in fact run slowly on even the newest MacBook Pros because Word is not yet compiled for the Intel Macs and does not run natively as a universal binary but runs under Rosetta, which translates Word to run on Apple computers running Intel CPUs. If you are working with small files, it isn’t too bad, but big files will slow it down to almost a crawl at times, or it will even stop responding for several seconds between each command.
You can work around these problems by breaking your file into much smaller ones, save often (and close the file once in while), and save as a text file, rather than as a doc file.
An alternative is to use another word processor or text editor to save your copied text---there are many that will work as well as or better than Word for what you want to do. Pages is a good alternative----I have to collaborate on Word files every day, and I prefer to work on my MacBook Pro (although I also use Windows-based computers about as frequently, too), and except for the most complex Word files with tables, charts, and pictures, Pages works very well, and you can save the file as a Word document, too, if you need to.
Hope that answers some of your questions----and always remember….I could be wrong.
