Email aliases and .mac

I have sucessfully set up my .mac alias (using .mac mail).
First make a note of your primary account information:
Username & password
Incoming mail server
Outgoing mail server
Ports etc...
You will be applying these settings to your new account.
On iPhone go to:
* Settings/mail/add account/choose "other".
* Sellect type: imap
Name the account (name you want to appear in "from" field of email).
Type in your .mac alias address.
Description: Name of mailbox (i.e. personal, work).
Incoming mail server (enter info from your primary account):
* Host Name: mail.example.com (or mail.mac.com)
* Your primary account username
* Your primary account password
Outgoing mail server (enter info from your primary account)
In my case, for out going mail server I am using:
smtp.att.yahoo.com, port: 465
My username & password
Now, on my iPhone mail, I can select which account to send & receive from.
Personal or work.
Works for me, hope it does for you!

The only way "around" this is to set up truly separate email accounts. Because you are using aliases, all accounts are merely different names for the same primary account. Thus, all accounts will be the same, just with different names. By computer analogy, it would be akin to creating multiple aliases to the same file on your computer but trying to get each one to "point to," or "mirror" a different file. The only solution, or "work-around" to this would be to create separate files.
The same thing applies to email aliases. They are not truly separate accounts, so no fix or work-around will ever apply. However, rest assured that the recipient will only ever see the alias name of the account used to send the email. They will be under the impression that when they reply, they are replying to your alias name, and will not have access to your primary email name unless you give it to them.
The beauty of the email alias is that it is transparent to you. If you begin to get spam from a particular alias, you can simply turn it off or delete it altogether. If you look at the "to" filed under your mail header, you can see to which alias each email was sent...

  • How to delete old email aliases from Mac Mail?

    I have been a Mac user since the '90s and like many, evolved up from the original OS X to today's Lion.  10 years ago, we created email aliases in a very early version of Mac Mail and today, they still populate the drop-down menu when I'm selecting the email account to send from.  Since there are 3 total aliases x 2 accounts (.Mac and .Me), I have 6 unneeded addresses which I'd like to delete.
    I cannot use iCloud for this, as it shows that I do  not have any aliases..  so there is nothing to delete.
    Any ideas on how to clean up the email address drop-down and delete the old aliases?
    Thanks everyone!
    Eric

    Open Mail's preferences, and edit the SMTP outgoing server list. Delete any servers for these accounts.
    You said you checked iCloud for this. I assume you meant you went to iCloud.com and checked the accounts there for aliases.

  • After UPDATE 2.01 MY Bugs EMAIL (pop and MAC/ME) and GPS

    GPS not as bad as some folks, but still off by a house or two;before it was accurate.
    Also, none of the emails work, also manually deleted a mac/me account and added it to no avail.
    Ideas?
    Also, is it possible to revert back to 2.0?
    I thought it was and tried UPDATES while holding down option key and selected the 2.0 package and got an error after I was done and still ended up with 2.0.1. Maybe I am doing something wrong.
    For sure snappier and can live with out of whack GPS if I can get mail back, unless APPLE does not fix GPS, then I will go back to older (when someone posts how....) and link to correct package (thought I had it)..
    Thanks

    I see you've solved your issue but reading through the thread it sounds like all your computers have the same name 'Macintosh'." Although they will have unique IP addresses, I'm not convinced them having the same name on the local subdomain is healthy for the network but I'm no networking expert.
    Go to System Preferences->Sharing and check out the Computer Name.... I have a unique name for every one of my 3 machines so that they resolve only to one address.

  • I just switched to icloud, and found that one of my email "aliases" that I use all the time has been deleted.  How do I get it back!

    Apple apparently deleted one of my email aliases, and I would like to know how to restore it. Please help.

  • Old @mac email aliases not showing up in iCloud

    I have several old email aliases with the @mac.com name.  None of these are showing up in iCloud when I log in via a web browser.  I only see the following:
    The recommended method of adding/editing aliases indicates that I have no aliases (as shown above), but I know I do and I test them and they still work (i.e. I can send emails to those aliases and they show up both when I'm in iCloud email via the browser or in my email client on the Mac).
    Tried finding similar problems on the discussions forums at discussions.apple.com but either I couldn't or ones which were close did not have replies.
    Would appreciate help with the above.

  • Messages Beta and iCloud email aliases

    I set up Messages and made my primary contact id my icloud/apple id.
    I tried to add an email alias that I use frequently with the icloud account but I keep getting an error when I try to add that email alias as an email account.
    Any thoughts/suggestions?
    thanks

    I am not sure what you mean by "connected with the Apple ID in use".  The email aliases were email aliases that I had with MobileMe and they carried over to icloud.  Email sent to either the original Apple ID or the email alias has always worked as expected.  The email shows up on IOS devices and my Mac regardless of whether the email was addressed to the original Apple ID or the email alias.

    I made the fatal mistake of allowing iCloud to handle my @mac mail account.
    I had set this address up with aliases and never had a problem.
    Ever since iCloud has been handling it I have had problems.
    It seams impossible to claim my account back from iCloud. How can it be achieved or has Apple set a booby trap?

    iCloud is the successor to MobileMe. MobileMe shuts down forever tomoorrow.
    If you only want to use the email portion of your previous MobileMe account you can. You do not have to use all the other features of iCloud, just like you didn't have to use all the other features of MobileMe.
    The email account has not really changed at all. Just the server address it comes from.
    The sending emails problem you are having, is this on your Mac in Mail, in webmail at iCloud.com or on your iOS device?
    When it doesn't succeed in sending, what does it do? Any error message?
    What mail server settings are you using in Mail? What version of Mac OS X are you using?

  • I cannot find my .mac email aliases!

    I cannot find my former .mac email aliases - one of which I use for business and is on all my business stationery. I don't want to change it if I don't have to. I don't see it in the list - only the new @me  address. It was my understanding that all my aliases would remain intact. Help!

    Go into your account at icloud.com.
    They should still be active if you check under Preferences/Settings for email - if they don't appear and it says 3 of 3 aliases available, logout and log back in - they then appeared for me.  Weird.

  • Email aliases created under .mac

    I am sure I am not alone in being confused over the current state of play regarding email aliases. Before 2008 I created several aliases @mac and these have carried forward to @me. Today I thought I should do some housekeeping and tried to view my existing aliases. I used to be able to do this under Mobile Me but iCloud doesn't seem to have the option. I see my main mail address shown as both [email protected] and [email protected] and I am told I have 3 of 3 aliases availabe to create.
    I seem to remember that I could have up to five aliases under @mac and @me. I have at least three that I can remember and which I use regularly.
    When I try to create a new alias I get a message to say that I have just deleted an alias and will have to wait for this to take effect. As far as I know I have not deleted any alias. If I have done so inadvertantly, I have no way of determining which has been deleted and which addresses are still current.
    I ought to be able to see a list of aliases and have the option to delete those I no longer need before creating new ones.
    Perhaps someone with a better knowledge of iCloud mail can advise?

    The first time I logged into iCloud via a browser, I saw the same and feared all my aliases had gone.
    Next time however all the old aliases were there.
    Try logging out of iCloud in the browser and then log back in.
    Whatever you do don't try to create new ones yet, and if the old ones don't reappear contact iCloud support.

    I have 2 email addresses (1 mac.and 1 blueyonder.) each with separate identities and passwords. I am forever getting asked to verify identity and/or passwords and having these refused and me then having to set up new ones. Can I combine my email addresses to a single Apple Identity and Password? If yes then How?
    Any help much appreciated as this is driving me crazy!

    Depending on what you're asking...
    There is no means to merge Apple IDs.  You can change the mail address assocaited with your Apple ID, so you might switch to using and purchasing from one email address, and using the second as a backup.  (There's no means to merge the purchases, and related baggage.)
    While I'm guessing this was about Apple IDs, for completeness...  Combining the mail messages involving multiple email addresses is separate from the Apple ID; that is usually done with some combination of notifying the senders or with the forwarding of messages from one mail server to the preferred server.  Or running multiple mail accounts in parallel, depending on what you are up to.

  • HT1277 I cannot send email from my mac but I can from my iPad and iphone

    Hi Guys,
    Suddenly I cannot send email from my Mac.  I can however receive emails.
    I can send emails with the same settings from my iPad and iPhone.
    Please help!!

    Your settings for the SMTP server — host name, port number, SSL/TLS or not, or login credentials — are likely incorrect.  Use the Connection Doctor tool (Mail.app > Window > Connection Doctor) to check what's going on with the connections (and to get some diagnostic messages), then review the diagnostics and the current settings with the requirements established for your particular mail provider.

    My computer has been infected by a Trojan Horse.  It has taken over my Mac email account and began sending out malicious emails to everyone in my address book.  I cleared out my MAC address book and began using my AOL email account. It took a few days and then my AOL email account was infected and has now been send out malicious email to all my contacts for over a month.  It has also infected my iPhone--I am no longer able to send or receive emails on my iPhone.  Also, once the Trojan Horse began using my AOL email it completely blocked me from using my MAC account by sending never ending popups asking for my email password to access my MAC email account, but it never accepts my pass word.  The TH has also slowed down everything on my computer.  It's like I am working on an old PC with dial up connection instead of the high speed digital connection that I have.  The little color wheel spins constantly as I wait for sometimes over a minute for a page to pull up.  If it pulls up at all.  I have tried to use the 2 disks that came with my computer to completely remove everything on my computer and then reinstall all the programs, but I am not allowed to sweep my computer clean.  I thought maybe my disks that came with my computer were defective so I called Apple and they sent me 2 new disks.  I am not able able to clear my computer with the 2 new disks either.  I have done this before successfully so it's not something new to me.  I do remember when I believe my computer became infected:  I had googled an unusual sewing term, and I was opening what appeared to be legitimate sites, when all of a sudden a pop up appeared that said that my computer had been infected.  I immediately shut my computer off, but it was too late.  I downloaded a virus program for Mac, and it has never found a virus or problem at all.  I think it is part of this Trojan Horse, but I am unable to delete it from my computer.  It refuses to uninstall.  The Mac Trojan Horse is real and it is terrible.  If anyone has any suggestions for me I would be very appreciative,
    Beth

    Assuming you have these accounts set up in Mail, open preferences and under Accounts tab, edit the SMTP outgoing server list. Do you have a .mac address in the list? If so, delete it.
    Are you using iCloud?
    For the troubled account, select the correct SMTP server for that account in the box and check the box to use only that server with that account.
