Embedding Fonts in AS 3.0 NOT the IDE?!?!

Hi --
I would like to include fonts in a SWF that I am building
using Flash CS3
and AS 3. I have found lots of examples online that look like
this:
[Embed(source="C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\ARIAL.TTF",
fontFamily="Arial")]
private var _arial_str:String;
However, the definition of the variable defined below the
EMBED tag varies,
sometimes its "Class", sometimes its "Font".
In any event, the font is used this way:
mytext.font = "Arial"
The problem is that this does not work for me. I have tried
the various
types mentioned above for the asset but none makes any
difference.
If I embed the font in the library of my project I can access
the font this
way:
mytext.font = new AvantGarde().fontName;
But when I try this code with the Embed tag I get different
errors at
compile time depending on how I've define the variable.
Can someone please help? It appears that the code samples I
found are for
Flex and not Flash?
I really want to be able to make this work without embedding
the fonts in
the library.
Thanks,
Rich

Hi --
I can get this to work by importing the font into the library
but isn't
there a way to do this in Flash CS3 / AS 3.0 without using
the library?
Thanks
Rich

• Cannot extract the embedded font arial.Some char might not be displayed

Hi Folks,
Our requirement is to generate the customer account statement for a set of cusomters during a particular period.
we use a script to generate the statement and convert it to pdf.This pdf is then stored in the application server and retrived using cg3y transaction.The transaction allows the statement to be generated for multiple customers and company code.
the problem that we face is that the first customer account statement is generated properly the rest of the statements are not displayed properly.When we open the customer account statement we get the error 'Cannot extract the embedded font arial.Some characters might not be displayed properly'.All the Headings that we of the font BOLD ARIAL were not displayed.
This error does not occur for the first pdf file generated.(say we have 3 customers for the 1st customer pdf is proper however for the next two error'.
When I checked the application server I found that the first file has font subtype as Type1 and then rest of the files have font subtype as Truetype.
This is working fine.I downloaded the file to pc using cg3y.the pdf looks fine.

I have to change the tont subtype to Type1 as in my first cust. statement.Is there a way to this???????
There can be no problem with the code cause the account statement generated for first customer is perfect.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi,
this can be related to the compression of the PDF file.
You can turn off the FlateDecode compression again via report RSTXPDF3 as described in Note #843480. It is a little confusing. The option 'FLATE_COMPR_OFF' needs to be set to 'On' to turn off the FlateDecode compression.
To set this please run as follows:
se38 -> RSTXPDF3 -> enter 'FLATE_COMPR_OFF' in the 'Name' field -> Select 'Change Settings' radio button
You will get a pop-up 'Do not use flat compression'.
Select the 'on' button.
After this check if the PDF is created correctly.
regards,
Aidan

• How can I create a PDF with embedded fonts (not a subset of the font) from Excel?

I need to create PDF's from Excel spreadsheets. The PDF needs to have embedded fonts but every time I create one it only has a subset of the embedded font. I have tried setting preferences in the Acrobat add in (unchecked the "Subset Embedded Fonts" option and also tried with the Subset Embedded Fonts checked but the percentage set to only 1% in an attempt to force full font to be embedded.)
I also tried opening the resulting PDF with Acrobat Pro XI but could not figure out how to add the font in.
A method to accomplish the results from either tool would be great.

Anna;
Unless you can add those fonts to your system via the Font book and then substitute them in iPhoto, you'll have to either user the available fonts or create your own pages, 8.5 x 11, in an image editor like Photoshop Elements and use them on pages that are one photo per page. Other's have done that with some success.
If you has PS or PSE create an 8.5 x 11" canvas at 300 dpi. Then you can add your photos, add text (if PS can use the text), and create your own layout.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

• Module not unloading if embedded font was ever used

So, I have a test app that uses modules with the font embeded. Using ModuleManager I am able to load up the module. Once I call IModuleInfo.factory.create(), I am then able to setStyle("fontFamily", "BPDiet") and the font does show up. The issue I am now having is that once I have used a font from a module, even if my TextArea is no longer using it (I even tried removing the textArea, and replacing it with a new one), the module will not unload.
I read through this "What We Know About Unloading Modules" and I think I am not leaving any references around.They are loaded using the load() defaults. There is no code (that is used) in the module. The modules are not being added to the display, so they never receive focus.
Note that I am unable to run the profiler as suggested in the article as I don't have the premium Flash Builder 4. <grrr>
Note that the first module that is loaded, I can never get to unload, even if I never used the font embedded in it, but all subsequent modules will unload, if I do not use the embedded font. I can live with the first one being pinned as long as I can unload the others that are not in use.
Here is the code from one of my modules:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<mx:Module xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx">
<fx:Script>
<![CDATA[
import spark.components.TextArea;
[Embed(source='assets/BPDiet.otf',
fontName='BPDiet',
mimeType='application/x-font')]
public static var BPDietNormal:Class;
public function GetSampleTextArea():TextArea {
var SampleTextArea:TextArea = new TextArea();
SampleTextArea.text = "Test BPDiet please!";

return SampleTextArea;

<s:TextArea id="sampleTextArea" fontFamily="{fontNameForSample}" text="Some Sample text for your viewing"/>
</s:VGroup>
</s:Application>
A couple things to note; I am calling System.rc() in the unloadCurrentFont() method just to speed up seeing the SWF unload in the debug console. The DoNonImportantWork() is there to just cause some events to happen and to create some objects that will need to be GC'ed. It also let me know that the fonts are not getting registered in Font.
I'm going to have 30 fonts (and more, that designer is busy) that I will need to be able to dynamically load, but right now, loading them with CSS style modules blows up after about 15 because style modules register the font so I cannot unload the CSS swf.

To help eliminate the question of whether the TextArea is being held by something else, I have removed it from the MXML, and now programatically create it. That did not help.
So, I got the trial version of Flash Builder 4 installed on another machine in the office so that I can use the profiler. (The profiler is pretty cool by the way).
After a lot of profiing, I found four paths to the module's FlexModuleFactory.
Two of those paths go to EmbeddedFontRegistry, whose data is static. I could get into it and remove font entry and free up the moduleFactory from there. This is a hack, that entry in/on EmbeddedFontRegistry.font should have been cleaned up by the code removing the fontFamily from the TextArea. (Note that EmbeddedFontRegistry is marked [ExcludeClass], which I assume means I should not really be messing with it.
The other two I cannot get to as they are anonymous. They also don't appear to be referenced, as the Object References shows them both as GC root objects. Here is a screen shot:
I did a search through the sdk code and 'fbs' only shows up as a parameter on the init function of various Marshal support classes, but is not used in the init()
Anyway, these references to the FlexModuleFactory do not get held if I do not use the embeded font in the module.
Here is the updated code:

• Mx Components displaying wrong the embedded Font

Hi, I'm developing with Adobe Flash Builder 4.5 and I have a problem that the mx components displaying wrong the embedded font which is embedded in a css-file. But spark components have no problems with displaying the embedded font.
thanks

See the embedded fonts post on my blog. The MX components default to a

• Error: cannot extract the embedded font 'WTNNGO+LiberationMono-Bold' when reading a PDF

I am trying to read a pdf file and I get the error: cannot extract the embedded font 'WTNNGO+LiberationMono-Bold'. Then some of the words are displayed as sets of dots, a dot per character. I have tried Adobe Reader 7 through 11 all with the same error. Apparently some fonts are missing. My OS is 64 bit windows 7.

Tell them to embed the font information into the PDF. You don't have the font on your system so as-is, the PDF needs it to display that font. With embedded font information, you don't need the font.

• Embedding font problems (when exporting from InDesign to PDF)

A message alert is shown, when opening a pdf - after exporting from InDesign: Cannont exctract the embedded Font Frutiger.
We have uninstalled the frutiger font and installed an open type. But the font is not embedded anyhow..?
Can anyone help?
Thanks very much.
Jane

I don't know if you need help scripting this, but...........
If you can not re-create the PDF from InDesign using the OTF,
In Acrobat, highlight the text with the acrobat touch-up text tool, right click and go to properties. You should be able to assign the OTF font running on you system, and select the embed option.
If not, this is why PitStop is an indespensable (sp?) tool.
Best of luck

• Embedded font on Spark Button

I am using an embedded font for all spark labels. It works fine.
However, the font is not applied to the button label. If I switch the font to Comic Sans MS then the font is used on the button.
I can't figure out why this particular embedded font works in all labels, except the button label.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm seconding Robs reply here... I had a very similar issue and ended up having to set the fontWeight and fontStyle to match the embedded font. In my case it was normal and normal using a Futura family font.
So, my overall embed was:
@font-face {
src: url("assets/fonts/Futura_Book_BT.ttf");
fontFamily: "FuturaCFF";
embedAsCFF: true;
@font-face {
src: url("assets/fonts/Futura_Book_BT.ttf");
fontFamily: "Futura";
embedAsCFF: false;
Then my buttons looked like
<s:Button fontFamily="Futura"  fontWeight="normal" label="Select"  click="hubSelectionHandler(event)" />

• Embedding font in app

Hi,
I'm using LTC Bodoni (via TypeKit) on my website and now I'm working on my digital portfolio: basically HTMl5+CSS, packed with Baker Framework to be published on Apple Store.
I would use the font with @font-face.
I'm wondering if the licence of Bauer Bodoni allows this kind of use.
I want ot be sure before buying the font...
On Bauer Bodoni webpage (http://store2.adobe.com/cfusion/store/html/index.cfm?store=OLS-IT&event=displayFontPackage &code=1294) Embedding licence is set to Editable for this font: so I could embed the font in a digital document and "the embedded font can then be used by the recipient of the electronic document to view, print and further edit or modify the text and structure of the document in which it is embedded."
Using a font inside an app is a little bit different: my final file is not a real document, it's an app. But the recipient (final user) will not be able to modify the document or use the font in no way, because it will be embedded inside the app.
Does someone have any idea?
Does licence cover use inside app or not?
Thanks!

You may try a search for embedding font in this forum and in other forums, such as these:

• Embedding Fonts in AS3

Maybe someone here can help me understand this a bit
better.....
These questions are based on the AS3 Cookbook recipe 9.17
(Embedding Fonts)...
According to the cookbook, embedding fonts in AS3 requires
using the [Embed] metatag "inside an AS file outside the class
declaration". I can't figure out (based on the cookbook), what I'm
doing wrong... I've attached my entire class so go ahead and see
what I'm doing wrong...or not understanding here...
It's the entire class at this point.... still migrating my
stuff from AS2 to AS3....

SymTsb,
Can you provide a working AS and Fla? If not, do you mind
posting your code? I'm having similar problems and have been
searching for a solution for days now. I tried copying the code
above and applying KGlad's suggestion, but it still doesn't work.
I went to the library panel and added a new Font. In the name
field I added "_arialBold". Then I hit OK. I then right clicked and
selected linkage. I checked off "Export for AS"and "Export in first
frame". In the class field I put "_arialBold". The base class was
"flash.text.Font". In the class you created, I replaced every
instance of the word "Vivacious" with "_arialBold". I added KGlads
code one line after you defined the TextFormat.
In my fla, I imported your class and then created a new
instance of your class. I ran the file... blank screen...

• Using embeded fonts in loaded swf.

I have a .Swf, which has 3 fonts embedded in it, they are all exported in frame 1 for AS. This swf loads any number of external .swfs which have dynamically generated textfields inside of them. This text must be embedded text because effects may be applied to them. I do not want to embed the three fonts into every external swf, and do not think I should have to. The font exists in the Loading swf and I have registered the fonts to the global font list. If I print this list from the loaded swf, all three fonts are present, but when I try to use any of them, my textfiels are empty.
My question is how do I utilize a font which is embedded in a swf, from a swf which has been loaded into that swf?
From my external swf, this code:
[PHP]var embeddedFonts:Array = Font.enumerateFonts(false);
embeddedFonts.sortOn("fontName", Array.CASEINSENSITIVE);
trace(embeddedFonts);[/PHP]
produces the following:
[PHP][object CenturyBook],[object MyriadProRegular],[object MyriadProItalic][/PHP]
which are the three fonts that are embedded in the loading swf, So I assume the LOADED swf has access to these fonts.
When I apply this code to the externally loaded swf:
[PHP]var FontClass:Class = getDefinitionByName("MyriadProRegular") as Class;
trace("FontClassInstance -> " + FontClass.toString());
var linkedFont: Font = new FontClass();
trace("Font name: " + linkedFont.fontName);
var textFormat: TextFormat = new TextFormat(linkedFont.fontName, 14);
//... The next lines set up the text box and apply the format. I am sure this is done correctly.
[/PHP]
I get the following output:
[PHP]FontClassInstance -> [class MyriadProRegular]
Font name: Myriad Pro[/PHP]
which is exactly what I would expect. Yet, my text box is still blank. I have embedText = true on the text box, and have applied a string to the "text" property, so it's nothing silly liek that.
Any help would be appreciated...

You may also want to look at the various embedded font format issues. Many of the Flex 4 components use a newer embedded font fortmat, which is not the same as the one generally used in Flash. So even if ther Flash font gets registered properly, it still may not work with some of the spark components.
You should be able to create a swf using Flex that contains fonts embedded in either format, which can then be used in the way you describe, though, since Flex 4 suports both font formats.
Hopefully, someone else will jump in here if I got some of this wrong.

• TextFlow using an embedded font or stylename in span

I am trying to use an embedded font in a TextFlow span element in a TextArea in a custom component and it is not working. Also can you use a stylename from an ext. stylesheet? The fontFamily works if I style the TextArea itself with it, and it works as a device font in the span since it is loaded on my computer, but I need to use it as an embedded font since most users will not have it.
Thanks,
John
Below is what I tried:
<s:TextArea>
<s:textFlow>
<s:TextFlow>
<s:p>
<s:span fontFamily="threeDumbFont" fontLookup="embeddedCFF">
Everyone says the cow jumped over the moon
</s:span>
</s:p>
</s:TextFlow>
</s:textFlow>
</s:TextArea>
I have a external styleshteet for the application here is part of it that includes the font:
@font-face {
src:url("assets/fonts/3Dumb.ttf");
fontFamily: 'threeDumbFont';
fontWeight: normal;
fontStyle: normal;
embedAsCFF: true;
.logo {
fontFamily: 'threeDumbFont';
fontLookup: embeddedCFF;
fontSize: 40;
color: #ed1161;

Set fontFamily on the TextArea as well.
The rules are that all fonts in a component must be embedded in the same SWF, and the component itself must be given one of those fonts as the fontFamily (and fontStyle and fontWeight) so it can detect and use the correct SWF for its fonts. Once you've specified one of the fonts in the SWF, the TextFlow can use any of the fonts in the SWF.

• Embeding Fonts from TTF File

Hi,
I had a very basic question on using Embeded Fonts in SWF files.
I have to use a Italic effect on a Arail Font text, for this should I use ARIAL.TTF and apply the italic effect on it or Should I go for ARIALI.TTF file?
What is the difference and which is the correct way of doing it?
I am acutally working on a PPT to SWF converter and I am not able to match the look at feel of the Italic or Bold fonts in PPT and SWF, any suggestions where I should look for help on understanding how fonts are used?

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your reply.
I did some experimentation and found that I can embed the Arail.ttf file and apply FontStyle=Italic property in my MXML tag and it shows me a italic form of Arail font. But when I try to use the same embeded font using FontRange and specify FontStyle = Italic in font range the italic font is not shown on the UI. Why is there a difference in MXML and Font Range ?
I understand that I should use ARIALI.TTF file for Italic fonts but the problem is that it increases the size of my SWF. And even if somebody has used a italic style for couple of words it increases the size significantly. I want to avoid that.
Can you tell me why FontStyle on normal Embede font work from MXML and not from FontRange?
-Saurabh.

• CFDocumentSection breaks Embedded Font

I need to be able to use different headers and footers in my
report (Report Builder cannot handle it, see previous post).
When I use cfdocumentsection it appears to remove the
embedded font and I get the system default. Does anyone know about
a workaround for this problem? No luck on google.
Thanks.

Hi,
Designer embeds all used fonts by default.
If not the form properties have been changed.
Goto File > Form Properties and select the Save Options on the left side.
There you have a check box either to embed fonts or not.
Anyway, if the font designer set a flag in the font file which doesn't allow embedding, then the font will not be embedded in any case.
