Enabling ASM fast resync - backout considerations.

Hi,
I've just completed some testing in a sandpit environment of the ASM fast resync functionality. This was done by ensuring all databases using by the ASM instance had their 'compatible' setting at 11.1 and then altering the compatible.asm and compatible.rdbms parameters for each of the ASM groups. eg
ALTER DISKGROUP TESTDATA SET ATTRIBUTE 'compatible.asm' = '11.1';
ALTER DISKGROUP TESTFRA SET ATTRIBUTE 'compatible.rdbms' = '11.1';
All seemed to work ok, and during a test, in which I chmodded a candidate disk, asm took it offline, and then the countdown timers started , after which I fixed the problem, brought it online, and ASM performed the fast resync.
I'm about to roll this change out to our dev cluster, and wondered if anybody had any ideas for a backout plan, or if there were any potential problems that I might come across that would necessitate a back out. It seems that when you make this change, it cannot be undone, so I want to make sure I don't get any nasty surprises.
Thanks

Hi,
unfortunately this parameter can only be increased (not decreased), so the only fallback method is a restore. So make sure you have actual RMAN backups.
Because you need to recreate the diskgroups and to the restore the databases...
Before activating it, make sure you don't run any 10g databases on these diskgroups!
However I don't know of any issues (expect still having 10g databases) which would require a "downgrade" ....

Sebastian

  • Enable Fast Web View using ODC

    Hi Friends,
Please guide me how to enable "Fast Web View" Property to PDF which generated using Oracle Document Capture.
    Fast Web View:
Fast Web View restructures a PDF document for page-at-a-time downloading (byte-serving) from web servers. With Fast Web View, the web server sends only the requested page, rather than the entire PDF. This is especially important with large documents that can take a long time to download from a server.
Verify that an existing PDF is enabled for Fast Web View:
    Do one of the following:
■Open the PDF in Acrobat, and choose File > Properties. Look in the lower right area of the Description panel of the dialog box for the Fast Web View setting (Yes or No).
■(Windows only) In Windows Explorer, right-click the PDF file icon and choose Properties. Click the PDF tab and look near the bottom of the panel for the Fast Web View setting (Yes or No).
    Thanks,
    Selva

    Hi Nikhil,
From fast Web View do you mean that your PDF is taking time in opening? If this is the case, then generally it depends on the amount of data you are displaying on the form, if your form has large number of drop downs with huge data then it will take time in displaying the form.
Other problem may be the version of the form, Adobe 8.0.1 takes more time in opening, SAP Note 1104060 can help you if you are on version 8.
    Hope this helps,
    Amit

  • When ip cef is enable timeouts occur

First i want to enable netflow on our routers, and in order to do that i need to enable IP CEF.  but when i enable cef all of the point to point vpn sites connected to the router, they stay connected but the terminals that connect to our citrix farm will not connect they from what i can tell timeout on the connection. disabling cef they can connect. enabling cef they can't connect,
This is really odd behavoir since we can still remote access the site but the terminals just can't connect when ip cef is enabled.
I attached the config of the router, i removed the tunnels and other various things that is not relivant(i believe)

I'm not 100% certain, but I believe FastSwitching and CEF switching apply to unicast, not multicast.  Your "IP mroute-cache" command enables/disables fast multicast switching.
On a 3750, switching should be hardware based, for unicast and multicast, unless TCAM resources are insufficient.  If hardware switching falls back to non-hardware switching, you'll likely find process vs. Fast vs. CEF vs. multicast doesn't matter, all too slow.

  • Is fast boot not working for you? This is how you get it working correctly...

Ok so after two days of trying to register on this site, the 50th activation email finally worked...
Anyway I was trying to figure out why fast boot wasn't making much of a difference it seemed like once it booted quick but may have just been random. My setup is Z77a GD65 with two Samsung 830 128GB in RAID 0.
It was taking about 30 seconds from pushing the power button to getting into windows and that was with fast boot enabled. That did not seem right. After messing around for a while and researching I came across many mixed reviews about doing this or doing that. Windows 8 Feature... The windows 8 feature is from my understanding and research for secure boot...
If your just wanting the faster boot times using fast boot. Just enable MSI Fast Boot, and install the Fast Boot utility so you can get back into the bios. When you enable fast boot, this disables usb devices etc so you can't get into the bios when booting. This little utility is really useful as it will boot you from windows right into your bios etc. KEEP READING STILL NEED TO DO MORE!!!!!
Now for fast boot to work correctly you need to make sure you installed windows 8 in uefi mode. I read a couple people ask this question but I don't think they got the right answer or people just said yea I have a uefi motherboard and windows 8. That is not what people have been asking you.
To get this working correctly format a flash drive using rufus while choosing your win 8 iso.
You can get that here and it explains it and the settings to choose. I had to break up the link as the forum would not let me post the link. Maybe a mod can fix the links.
    eightforums .com/tutorials/15458-uefi-bootable-usb-flash-drive-create-windows.html
After that is done you should then see in the bios a boot option for a UEFI usb flash drive. Make sure your boot mode is using UEFI. Otherwise it will be using legacy mode and not show uefi devices. I selected UEFI only just to make sure. Then choose this uefi flash drive as your first boot device and save and reboot to install windows from this uefi flash drive.
    It should look like this
Once your at the install screen delete your partititons from the drive you are going to install windows on. So that it is unallocated. Then select new and apply. This will create 4 partitions. Here is a nice quide for doing that and explains it all. eightforums .com/tutorials/2328-uefi-unified-extensible-firmware-interface-install-windows-8-a.html
Basically your partitions should look like this.
Once you have installed windows you will then know if you installed in uefi as your splash screen will be different. Instead of just the MSI splash screen you will then see the windows loading square/circle as well on this same splash screen. You will now have a boot option called UEFI Windows Boot Manager. Select that one as your first boot device and then enable MSI Fast Boot.
Sorry if this post is cluttered I will add some more pics and clean it up in a bit. It's really early.

If one SSD fails, you lose the data on both SSDs.
In your case, you lose 128 GB.
    Period.
You continue to argue on silly things and you miss the main point:
RAID 0 on SSDs does not make any sense.
RAID 0 (striped volume) has been designed for spinners.
It's a workaround to reduce the access time (a few miliseconds) caused by the mechanical parts of the HDD.
For a SSD (with a few microseconds access time) does not bring any boost.
    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-raid-benchmark,3485-10.html
On contrary: shorter lifetime for both SSDs
So (for the last time) the best solution in your case is:
Put the OS on the first SSD (drive C) and the other programs/games on the second one (drive D).
There is no need to kill both SSDs at the same time (for nothing).
And finally, talking about this silly "fast boot" of yours:
5,10,20, or 30 seconds is something irrelevant.
Simply because you get the max speed on an "empty" OS only.
With every installed app (most of them come with bloatware anyway), your boot time is getting longer and longer.
On the other hand, who cares if it takes 10 or 20 seconds?
Only someone with mental problems needs to boot up the computer all day long.
99.99% of the users boot up the computer once or twice per day.
From my point of view, this topic is closed.
You're free to think and do anything you like.
I take it you are extremely hard headed and only view this from your opinion. Even with your logic of "If a drive fails you lose 128GB of data is wrong." If a drive fails I would lose 256GB of data if the RAID was full...
The way you originally worded it made it sound like you thought RAID 0 only uses the capacity of one drive... I was trying to clear that up by saying it uses the capacity of both drives and ends up being 256GB capacity but I guess you couldn't wrap your head around what I was trying to say.
Think what you want... but everyone I know on all of the tech forums I have been on for years, "EVGA, HARD, etc" 99% of users prefer running OS in RAID 0 on SSD's. Anyone with half a brain does not store important files on a RAID 0 array. I even created a new thread on EVGA asking how members prefer installing Windows with two identical SSD's. Most of them said they always run a RAID 0 for OS on SSD's. A couple others said they prefer running Windows/Programs on one SSD, and Games on the other. Usually that is because when they reformat they can simply re initialize the steam directory on the second SSD and then you don't have to reinstall all of your games.
I respect your opinion but saying RAID 0 on SSDs does not make any sense is crazy talk. And that fast boot is only for people with mental problems lol... you sir have issues. Why do you think they made this feature? Why do people OC? A lot of people do it because it is fun, they are enthusiast, and they like to push a system. Why do people buy SSDs if its only a few seconds faster when you only turn on your computer once twice a day? When you only open an app or launch a game a couple times a day.

  • Recommended way to start db on oracle10g asm in cluster

We have a oracle 10g asm instance running on Solaris 10 cluster. During maintenance activity, we shutdown the database using cluster but startup of the database is carried out by DBA & not thru cluster. We then start the cluster service of the database after the manual startup. Is this fine & we can continue this practise or the recommended way is to start db thru cluster?

you can enable the database to startup automatically and test it by adding the asm database in the Oracle Clusterware.

  • EAP-TLS and EAP-FAST

    Hi NetPro.
EAP-TLS is working now, but how to configure EAP-FAST as the backup in case TLS is failure then user still able to use FAST as the second choice ?
your reply will be highly appreciated.
    thanks heaps.
    Jack

All you really need to do is enabled EAP-FAST on the Radius server. If you are running a controller environment there isn't any changes on the controller needed. If you are running autonomous make sure you have both "authentication open..." and "authentication network-eap..." configured under the SSID. They only thing that would need to be changed would be the client. You could setup two profiles, one for TLS and the other for EAP-FAST.

  • LabVIEW 2015 - Fast File Format and PlugIn Architecture

In LabVIEW 2015 the new "fast file format" was introduced:
"Improving Load Time for LabVIEW-Built Applications and Shared Libraries.
You can build stand-alone applications (EXE) and DLLs that load faster by using the fast file format in LabVIEW. <...> When you enable the fast file format, LabVIEW does not use the Application Builder object cache"
The question about PlugIn architecture, when lot of SubVIs called dynamically (for example, from external LLBs) from relative small core application. What I observed is - the size of the executable with this option was significantly reduced (roughly twice) and the core application itself starts faster, but PlugIns load time is the same regardless from this option (I understand why - when application fully loaded then Dynamic calls just "normal" LabVIEW code and therefore this option takes no effect). Unfortunately in code distribution build spec (as well as in packed libraries) this option is not available.
Is it possible to get "fast" application also for PlugIn-based architecture and get LLBs or packed libraries in "fast file format"? Can someone explain, what means "LabVIEW does not use the Application Builder object cache" and how this "fast load" mechanism technically working?
    Thank you in advance,
    Andrey.

Hey Andrey!  It's good to see that you guys have been getting some good mileage out of this project.  I'll go through your questions in order ...
    1) These optimization are actually always enabled by default for packed project libraries. In fact, the load time benefits for packed libraries should generally be better than what you observe for .EXEs and .DLLs!
    2) The app builder cache is something that is enabled for EXEs and DLLs that works to cache the results of previous compiles when the source has not been updated.  It is somewhat analogous to the .obj object files generated by a C++ compiler.
    3) I won't get into too many nitty gritty details but the gist of it is... LabVIEWs various non optimized file formats are treated somewhat similarly to the way that we treat 'loose' VIs. In a DLL/EXE/LVLibp we know at build time what the contents and dependencies of a given built binary are going to be.  With this knowledge we can go ahead and construct something that is more similar to a statically linked PE or ELF file (clearly we're not using either of those) while the analogy is not 100% perfect it's the best I can do without going into a couple pages worth of description   In addition to these basic file format changes we did a large amount of work on implementing a new loader which is able to take advantage of the large amounts of precomputed file data that is now included in the format which enabled us to cut a lot of corners that were there previously.

Use the following syntax to disable an Oracle ASM instance:
    srvctl disable asm [-n node_name]

    From 10.2 doc http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/rac.102/b14197/srvctladmin.htm#RACAD5026:
    >
    srvctl disable
Disables a specified object (cluster database, database instance, ASM instance, or service). SRVCTL disable is intended to be used when an object is to be repaired or is down for maintenance to prevent inappropriate automatic restarts. When you issue the disable command, the object is disabled and unavailable to run under Oracle Clusterware for automatic startup, failover, or restart. If you specify -i instance_name, then SRVCTL only disables the service from running on the specified instance.

  • Fast Start h264 files from FCPX ??

Is there a way to enable the Fast Start option on files exported from FCPX?
Whenever I place files on our webserver for online viewing, we set them to Fast Start so one can start viewing them as they download. h264 exports from FCPX do not do this. Is there a way to enable this setting in FCPX?

The dafault did not work, but using them as a starting point, I was able to cobble together a custom setting that works great. Thanks for helping me get over my Compresor anxiety!
I really like the Vimeo service as well, but we do a lot of unusual aspect ratio videos so we can't use Vimoe or Youtube for those videos. Hopefully one of them will soon support custom aspect rations.

  • Problems with fast web view and really large PDF files.

If "allow speculative downloads in background" is set then the Fast Web view becomes nonfunctional.  Reader is makeing the HTTP Byte range requests but will ask for almost the entire PDF file in one range (180 MB of the 182 MB file).
If "allow speculative downloads in background" is not set then Fast Web view is working fine, Reader is making more HTTP Byte range requests but the larges ones are still small 20K or so.
Is this behavior being experianced by anyone else?
What are the disadvantages, if any, of having "allow speculative downloads in background" turned off?

    Hi,
The signing tool use Capicom (Library from .NET) to generate attached digital signature. I also tried signing with .net class SignedCms but the result is the same. What I don't understand is why some PDFs are working and others are not.
For example, I uploaded here a signed PDF which can be opened up succesfully: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/104591126/PDFs/Signed_Dummy1.pdf  (it is the same PDF but I didn't enable the fast web view)
Can you suggest other signing method?

    Hi!
I just tried to enable Ultra fast boot in my ASRock UEFI,.. didn't work. I learned that I need a GPU which supports GOP. Does my GTX970 support this protocol by default? Do I need to flash a VBios?

I have difficulties saving my bios with GPU-Z (version 0.8.0 and 0.7.9). It says: 'BIOS reading not supported on this device.'
But msi LiveUpdate says I'm using NV316MH.125.....I don't know if this is helpful.
    Windows 8.1 64-bit
    ASRock Z97 Extreme4
    msi Geforce GTX970 Gaming 4G
    Xenon E3-1231 v3
    Thanks in advance.

GTX970 should supports GOP originally, so you don't have to flash VBIOS.
NV316MH.125 means it's a GOP VBIOS,  if it is NV3XXMS.XXX means non GOP.
