Enabling "Forced Parameterization" on a sql 2008 DB.....

We have a relatively high re-compilation rate of several Adhoc queries for a given DB. It has been suggested that we enable the DB "Forced Parameterization"  option for that DB. Supposedly, then, even if the Adhoc queries specify different
values the execution plans will not
be recompiled.
Has anyone used this option?  If it is that good, why isn't Enabled the default setting? (worried about the possible downsides.)
TIA
edm2

You need to test it as it may hurt the over all performance as well. Do you see CPU went  down? Do the users start complain about the performance?

  • Oracle 10G 64bit to SQL 2008 64bit is very slow

I am running SQL 2008 64bit on a Windows 2008 64bit server. I installed the Oracle 10.2.0.4 w2k8 / vista 64 bit client and selected the "Admin" option. I also installed Oracle SQL Developer on the MSSQL box. I am noticing significant performance issues with the Oracle linked server from within MSSQL. In MSSQL I am using the Oracle Provider for OLE DB (OraOLEDB.Oracle) and the Data Source is pulling from TNSNames. I setup SQL Developer connections as "Basic". When I run this query (SELECT DISTINCT <column> FROM <table>) from Oracle SQL Developer the data returns in just over 1 seconds (1.007). When I run the same query in MSSQL as "SELECT DISTINCT <column> FROM <linked server>..<Schema>.<table>) from MSSQL it takes 26 seconds to get the data back. I have the "Allow inprocess" option enabled.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

I did find that the <server>..<schema>.<table> syntax does not always perform remote execution. To force MSSQL to run remote execution you have to use their OPENQUERY procedure. This requires embedding PL/SQL within the T-SQL code so that everything passes from Microsoft to Oracle. It also complicates even the simplest queries.

  • Cannot see new SQL 2008 R2 Express instance on Small Business Server 2011!

    Hi,
As it is stated on the subject line, I'm having a problem after I did a new install of SQL 2008 R2 Express and put a new instance on SBS 2011.
I'm developing a new program using SQL 2008 in C# and VB.Net. I have SQL 2008 R2 Express installed on my computer called "MSQL8R2EDATA" on my PC. Now I need to deploy it on SBS 2011 so I can do some testing on other workstations.
I'm currently running Windows 7, 64 bit, and it's named STEVE-PC. The SBS 2011 is named SERVER1, and it's 64 bit as well.
After installation on SERVER1 (SBS 2011), I then fired up SQL Server Configuration Manager and enabled Named Pipes, TCP/IP, and VIA.
After I've completed the SQL Configuration on SERVER1, I went back on my PC (STEVE-PC) and I tried to use Management Studio to connect to the  new instance MSQL8R2EDATA on SBS 2011, only problem is, I only see the computer name, not the new instance
    I've installed.
Back on SBS 2011 (SERVER1), I've verified that all the protocols are enabled, and the SQL Server Browser is automatically loaded and currently running, as well the MSQL8R2EDATA instance is automatically loaded and running, yet I still cannot see
it from my PC (STEVE-PC). I even switched from dynamic ports to a static port of 64719 (that was what the MSQL8R2EDATA was listening on that port when it was dynamic), and then added new rules to the Windows Firewall for program of the SQLSERVR.EXE, and
for UDP and TCP for port 64719 to "Allow All Connections" for Domain, Private, and Public; yet I still cannot connect SERVER1\MSQL8R2EDATA. I even disabled the firewall and then trying to connect once again to SBS 2001 and it still fails.
In case you're wondering, I left it on port 64719 since there are other active SQL Servers on SBS 2011 (SharePoint, SBSMonitoring, and ACT7).
Interestingly, when I run Management Studio on SBS 2011, I can see STEVE-PC\MSQL8R2EDATA and I'm able to log in and connect to it.
So what's going on here?!? Why am I able to connect to STEVE-PC which is Windows 7 64 from SBS 2011 (SERVER1), but I cannot connect from my computer to that instance on SBS 2011??
I really could use some big time help on this.
EDIT: Sorry for the confusion, but on the Windows Firewall (WF.msc), I did add new rules for incoming connections on:
    Program incoming connections to SQLSERVR.EXE
    TCP Port 64719
    UDP Port 64719
EDIT: To further assist, I have Management Studio installed on the SBS 2011, and I can locally log in and connect to the MSQL8R2DATA on SERVER1 with success. I even tried tcp:SERVER1\MSQL8R2DATA and again it is successful log-in and connection.
    Thanks in advance!
    Steve

    Hi,
Thanks for the response, but I have a question:
Installing SQL Express or SQL Server is not recommended on SBS
2011 because it is a DC, however technically it will work.
I'm a newbie when it comes to SBS 2011 and I'm taking a crash course on the subject. Can you explain to me what you mean by "DC"? Also, why
isn't recommended to install a new instance on SBS 2011?
As I also stated, I've added "New Rules" to the Windows Firewall to allow incoming connections on port 64719 for both TCP and UDP, and I also allowed incoming connections for SQLSERVR.EXE but no joy to connect to the SERVER1\MSQL8R2EDATA.
And yes, I can log-in and connect locally on SERVER1 using Management Studio with success. I even used tcp:SERVER1\MSQL8R2EDATA with the same success. It's my workstation STEVE-PC that fails. If that fails, then the rest of the workstations are going to fail.
Are you suggesting that I put the SQL Server 2008 Express on another workstation and just allow to to be
    accessed that way?

  • SQL 2008 Problem Calling an SP on an Oracle 10G Linked Server

    Hi everyone
I've read through a number of posts on many sites about this issue but haven't found anything that has helped me so far. The machine I'm using is running Microsoft SQL Server 2008 64bit and the linked server I've created to Oracle 10G is using OraOLEDB.Oracle. If I test the connection in SQL Management Studio it succeeds and for any queries I have using OpenQuery to select from the Oracle DB I have no problem getting results.
The Oracle 32bit client and 64bit client versions are installed on the machine.
My problem is that I need to exec an Oracle SP which in turn inserts into various Oracle tables. I previously had this all working fine on 32bit SQL Server 2000 installation connected to Oracle 10G. Using the same code in SQL Server 2008 I get the following error:
    Msg 7357, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
    Cannot process the object "{CALL INTF.INTF_TW_PO_REQ_INTERFACE.MAIN(NULL, 15.000000, 0.000000, 'BLPO0099998', 'BLPO0099998', '', '', 39804, 21883, 'BLPO0099998', 249, 1, 950, 'Main', 190506, 37336, '1', TO_DATE( '20090706','YYYYMMDD' ), TO_DATE( '20090706','YYYYMMDD' ), 'INCOMPLETE',37336, {RESULTSET 1, P_Success})}". The OLE DB provider "OraOLEDB.Oracle" for linked server "ORACLE" indicates that either the object has no columns or the current user does not have permissions on that object
The call is made by the following piece of code in SQL:
    SET @execCmd = N'SELECT
    P_Success
    FROM
    OPENQUERY( ORACLE, '''+ @oracleCmd + ''')';
    EXECUTE (@execCmd);
    Where @oracleCmd = {CALL INTF.INTF_TW_PO_REQ_INTERFACE.MAIN(NULL, 15.000000, 0.000000, ''BLPO0099998'', ''BLPO0099998'', '''', '''', 39804, 21883, ''BLPO0099998'', 249, 1, 950, ''Main'', 190506, 37336, ''1'', TO_DATE( ''20090706'',''YYYYMMDD'' ), TO_DATE( ''20090706'',''YYYYMMDD'' ), ''INCOMPLETE'',37336, {RESULTSET 1, P_Success})}
I also tried using the below snippet from another post I found and got no joy either.
    declare @result varchar(255)
    exec ('BEGIN
    ?:= your_SP_Name(''arg1'', ''arg2'', etc);
    END;
    ',@result OUTPUT) at your_LinkedServerName;
    select @result;
OLE DB provider "OraOLEDB.Oracle" for linked server "ORACLE" returned message "ORA-06550: line 3, column 7:
PLS-00222: no function with name 'INTF_TW_PO_REQ_INTERFACE' exists in this scope
    ORA-06550: line 3, column 1:
    PL/SQL: Statement ignored".
I can't figure out why it doesn't work in SQL 2008 when it worked fine in SQL 2000 - PLEASE HELP!
    Thank you
    Alida Hope

Why development on 10g and production on 8i? Either both should be 8i or both should be 10g.
If you will keep production on 8i and development on 10g then you cannot stop such errors as there are features that are enabled by default in 10g and both the versions have very big differences.
Just go ahead and install 8i.

  • Problems install SCCM 2012 with remote sql 2008 r2 sp2

I am having issues installing sccm 2012 on a remote sql 2008 r2 sp2 server on a seperate instance.
I get the error "The network path was not found"
if i point it at the primary instance it will let me continue but i cannot install sccm into that instance.
I have turned off dynamic ports and set a static port but I do not see where i can enter that in the installer.
I cannot seem to verify is the ssb port is working correctly or not.
my account is local admin on both servers and a sql sysadm.
There is no firewall between servers.
    Any suggestions?
    Regards
    Don

SPN is setup to AUTO register and is working.  remote sql is not a cluster.  Windows firewall on both servers is disabled.  Sql browser is enabled and started.  we have a group for system center that contains site servers and this group
is in the local admin of both servers and sysadm inside of sql server.
Why  we are consolidating all or our lesser sql servers into a larger one.

  • SQL 2008 R2 small business server OS edition check fails on SBS 2011 premium install on SBS member server.

I am having trouble installing SQL 2008 Small Business Edition on top of MS 2008 std from the SBS premium suite. I recieve the SQL Server 2008 R2 setup log error stateing "Operating system supported for edition "Failed". The specific error is "EditionRequirementCheck
Failed" This SQL server edition is not supported on this operating system.
The SQL 2008 server is a valid SBS domain member server and sees the SBS domain just fine. I have tried re-installing the OS. Not selecting any options except the SQL engine, verbose logging as per How to diagnose "Operating system supported for edition"
pre-requisite errors while installing SQL 2008 Standard Edition for Small Business with no success. (no log.txt generated), enabled browsing, and other items with no luck.
I got the software from MVLS under the specific SBS 2011 premium section. It doesnt seem right or sees something to keep it from installing. The SBS AD box is clean with all FSMO and root functions assigned to it. There are no trust relationships or
child domains. I have licenses for 75 users. Of course there is no tool, log or utility to find what the actual issue the SQL installation is seeing. SOS! Help!!!

I meet all prerequisites that can be verified.
I am installing it on the SBS Premium Server 2008 R2 OS from MVLS with the ISO file ending in 29732.
I am on a valid SBS 2011 domain.
The new SQL box is joined to the domain as a member server.
THe SBS server contains alll FSMO roles and is the root of the AD.
There are no trust relationships or child domains.
There is NO way that I can find to determine the number of user and device licenses that it "senses" on the domain. I dont know which ones to count. I am licensed for 75 users and have less than that useing the network. There is no licensing monitor or meathod
I can find to actually verify what the SQL install sees.
I am doing all this logged in as the domain admin.
The troubleshooting steps at the bottom of the post refrenced do not work or I am doing them wrong. I cannot find an output file when I enable verbose logging for the SQL install. I believe if I figure out how it may point the way to the block. Thanks

  • Sharepoint 2010 SQl 2008 r2 Reporting Services Integrated with Claims

    i have a 4 server sharepoint 2010 farm all servers are windows 2008 r2 x64
two severs are sharepoint app/wfe servers
one server is SQL sharepoint content db server sql 2008 r2 enterprise
one server is SQL Claims Provider DB and reporting services on SQL 2008 r2
the site is behind a forefront tmg proxy firewall for both internal and external users and both locations are producing the same results.
the web application i am having an issue with consists of a primary web app claims enabled web app that only has NTLM enabled, with an extended extranet webapp that  supports claims and NTLM.
there is surrently a site collection that has been configured for reporting services when i log into the site as a SQL Claims user i am able to run the reportbuilder as a content type  using the New Report builder report content type from a library on
this site. Reportbuilder launches and i am once gain prompted to login i login with the same credentials i used to log into the site and reportbuilder opens up and then i am able to open datasourceas and reports.
When i log in to the same site collection as a domain user i am able to log in to the site and launch reportbuilder. When reportbuilder opens up i am prompted to log in, i insert my domain\username and password and nothing happens the login prompt appears again
blank on the back end it throws the following exceptions
    1. Password check on 'username' generated exception: 'System.ServiceModel.FaultException`1[Microsoft.IdentityModel.Tokens.FailedAuthenticationException]: The security token username and password could not be validated. (Fault Detail is equal to Microsoft.IdentityModel.Tokens.FailedAuthenticationException:
The security token username and password could not be validated.).'.
2.An exception occurred when trying to issue security token: The security token username and password could not be validated.
any thoughts on where i should begin troubleshooting this.

I think i am getting close i am now seeing a new error it seems that the sp farm account is unable my domain account when launching reportbuilder.

  • KB for Reporting Services and IE11 on SQL 2008 R2

We are beginning our IE 11 deployment, and we have identified that the CM reporting services site will only render certain reports when you click the 'Enterprise Mode' option.
This is a known issue addressed by http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2917531 for SQL 2012, but I cannot find any correlating SQL 2008 R2 patch.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
    Will

What version of SQL do you have installed? Is there any chance you have enterprise mode enabled by default, or for your reporting site?
    Will
I'm behind your version. I'm base SP2 with the MS14-044 patch (10.50.4033). And no, I don't have enterprise mode enabled.
    I've been meaning to apply SP3, I'll see if there's a difference.

Using the -force command as Saleesh noted should work, but will kill your contacts.  If it's just a few users that are acting up, you can restore the contacts from backup for these users (export-csuserdata before you start).
Is it all users, or just a handful?

  • Server0 starts very slowly in PI 7.11 in Win 2008 / SQL 2008 MSCS config

    Hi all.
I have a problem in our newly installed PI 7.11 system on Windows Server 2008 and MS SQL 2008 MSCS setup. The J2EE application server on the node where the SCS is running, takes about 1 hour to start. About 20 minutes after starting, it goes from starting framework to starting apps, and then remains in that status for another 40-50 minutes. I am unable to find anything in the log files that can explain this behaviour. The J2EE app server on the second cluster nodes starts within 5-6 minutes. If I fail over the SAP Cluster Group to the second node, the situation is reversed.
We are using the latest 7.11 kernel and the latest available SPS.
    Has anyone experiences something similar?
    Regards,
    Thomas

    Hi.
    Thanks for your input!
I found this document [Process Integration (PI) Performance Check - Analyzing Performance Problems and Possible Solution Strategies|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/f0b96675-87cf-2c10-b489-dee0ac03f782?quicklink=index&overridelayout=true].
I also remembered having read somewhere that the VMC should be turned off for PI. So I set the parameter vmcj/enable = off. If this really did the trick or not, I cannot guarantee, but now my server0 processes starts normally.

I installed sql 2008 express on 2008R2 but it is not listening on port 1433.
I check configuration for tcp and enabled that already. also started sql browser service.
    any idea?
by default SQL Server Express does not enable Remote Connections.
    Could you check the following:
    1) check that the SQL Express is running (SQL Server Configuration Tool)
    2) log onto the box containing the SQL Server and try to connect with SSMS to the SQL Express instance. Try tcp/ip and/or shared memory to connect.
if you can successfully login check that the SQL Server does allow Remote Connections
    3) Firewall does not block incoming connections
    4) does the DNS server name resolve to the correct ip address of the SQL Server ?

  • Upgrade FIM 2010 R2 Sp1 Databases from SQL 2008 R2 to SQL 2012

    Hi,
I want to upgrade my SQL from 2008 R2 to SQL 2012.
    FIM Databases
    1) FIMService Database
    2) FIMSynchronizationService Database
Mentioned above are my FIM databases running on SQL server 2008 R2 . Now I was looking for some article which could tell me if SQL can be upgraded without affecting my existing databases of FIM or if i can move these databases to a new server having SQL
    2012
Activity I want to perform :  Create a fresh  Server of SQL 2012 and move my FIM 2010 databases over it by restoring the backups. but as per the link below it seems not possible!
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/5465.fimilm-how-to-move-the-backend-sql-server-synchronization-service-database.aspx

    Hi Shivam,
Please take a look here: Release Notes for Forefront Identity Manager 2010 R2 SP1.
In the table you have tasks to upgrade SQL for FIMService and FIMSych.
    FIM Service:
Upgrade FIM Service servers to FIM 2010 R2 SP1
Stop FIM Service on all servers
Backup Database [in case rollback needed]
Upgrade SQL to SQL Server 2012
Start FIM Service on all servers
    FIM Synch:
Upgrade FIM Sync to FIM 2010 R2 SP1
    Stop FIM Sync
Backup Database [in case rollback needed]
Upgrade SQL to SQL Server 2012
    Start FIM Sync
If you are not making in-place upgrade, I would do something like here:
    Stop FIM Services
Backup the databases at SQL 2008
Restore backed up databases on SQL 2012
Make sure SQL Agent Jobs are moved (FIMService)
Make sure Broker is enabled on FIMService database
On FIM machines create SQL alias using cliconfg utility. Alias should have the name of "old(sql2008) SQL" and point to new name/instance.
Start FIM Services - they would use "old" name to connect, but it would be translated to new location. So they would start.

Please!!!Some body help me solve this problem(except format my computer),i really really need your advice.

    Hi huydaibang,
The older version SQL Server 2005 could be installed with SQL Server 2008 R2 side-by-side.  It could not be the problem.
The reason that we get this error message is the client stack could not receive SSRP response UDP packet from SQL Browser.
    Here are the steps:
    1) Make sure your server name is correct, e.g., no typo on the name.
    2) Make sure your instance name is correct and there is actually such an instance on your target machine.
    3) Make sure the server machine is reachable, e.g, DNS can be resolve correctly, you are able to ping the server (not always true).
    4) Make sure SQL Browser service is running on the server.
    5) If firewall is enabled on the server, you need to put sqlbrowser.exe and/or UDP port 1434 into exception.

  • SQL 2008 R2 Best Practices for Updating Statistics for a 1.5 TB VLDB

We currently have a ~1.5 TB VLDB (SQL 2008 R2) that services both OLTP and DSS workloads pretty much on a 24x7x365 basis. For many years we have been updating statistics (full scan- 100% sample size) for this VLDB once a week on the weekend, which
is currently taking up to 30 hours to complete.
Somewhat recently we have been experiencing intermitent issues while statistics are being updated, which I doubt is just a coincidence. I'd like to understand exactly why the process of updating statistics can cause these issues (timeouts/errors). My theory
is that the optimizer is forced to choose an inferior execution plan while the needed statistics are in "limbo" (stuck between the "old" and the "new"), but that is again just a theory. I'm somewhat surprised that the "old" statistics couldn't continue to
get used while the new/current statistics are being generated (like the process for rebuilding indexes online), but I don't know all the facts behind this mechanism yet so that may not even apply here.
I understand that we have the option of reducing the sample percentage/size for updating statistics, which is currently set at 100% (full scan).  Reducing the sample percentage/size for updating statistics will reduce the total processing time, but
it's also my understanding that doing so will leave the optimizer with less than optimal statistics for choosing the best execution plans. This seems to be a classic case of not being able to have one’s cake and eat it too.
So in a nutshell I'm looking to fully understand why the process of updating statistics can cause access issues and I'm also looking for best practices in general for updating statistics of such a VLDB. Thanks in advance.
    Bill Thacker

I'm with you. Yikes is exactly right with regard to suspending all index optimizations for so long. I'll probably start a separate forum thread about that in the near future, but for now lets stick to the best practices for updating statistics.
I'm a little disappointed that multiple people haven't already chimed in about this and offered up some viable solutions. Like I said previously, I can't be the first person in need of such a thing. This database has 552 tables with a whole lot more statistics
objects than that associated with those tables. The metadata has to be there for determining which statistics objects can go (not utilized much if at all so delete them- also produce an actual script to delete the useless ones identified) and what
the proper sample percentage/size should be for updating the remaining, utilized statistics (again, also produce a script that can be used for executing the appropriate update statistics commands for each table based on cardinality).
The above solution would be much more ideal IMO than just issuing a single update statistics command that samples the same percentage/size for every table (e.g. 10%). That's what we're doing today at 100% (full scan).
Come on SQL Server Community. Show me some love :)
