Entourage & And an iMac in a predominantly PC environment?

Good morning all!
I recently switched to a MAC at my predominately PC university, and
now I find out after I've gotten the mac that we have little to no
support for it. I was hoping some of the corporate users could give a
hand or suggestions with the following:
1.) Cannot view resource accounts I am an owner of, nor accounts I am
a delegate for in Entourage 2004
2.) Seems to be no way that I can get the iMac on the University
Domain (and our IS folks seem unwilling to even try)
3.) MS Access for Office 04 Mac? Does this even exist? I was looking
for Office 2004 Professional and can't even find info on it other
than its not in stock anywhere.
4.) Anyone have success using bootcamp w/Windows XP to stop gap
between non mac friendly applications, the universities servers and
your mac?
any tips for getting more mac info out to the Universities IS folks?

Did you configure Entourage for an Outlook account? Consult Entourage's Help for information on setting up an Outlook account.
If your school uses standard Ethernet, then connect the computer's Ethernet port to an active port on the school's network. Open Network preferences in System Preferences. Select the Built-in Ethernet port and click on the Configure button. Click on the TCP/IP tab then set the 'Configure IPv4' drop down menu to DHCP if that's what your school uses. Click on the Apply Now button. Shortly you should see the network information appear - IP address, network mask, etc.
If the school uses assigned IP addresses then you will need to have the IS people assign an IP address for you to use. You would then configure using the Manual selection from the drop down menu. You will also need the network mask, gateway IP address, and Domain Name Server IP address.
There is no Access for the Mac. There are, however, other database applications such as FileMaker Pro. If you don't need Entourage you can use the free open source NeoOffice Aqua which is Office compatible and includes word processing, presentation, graphics, spreadsheet, and database applications that are fully compatible with MS Office. Be sure to get the Intel version.
Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak 2 or Vista. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, or Vista Ultimate. Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
3. VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, or Vista Ultimate. VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows. The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system.
In a Windows-only Centric university your only options are to be pro-active on your own and learn how to do things yourself. Such IS departments are disinclined to provide any type of Mac support mostly because they don't know anything about Macs. Nevertheless, Windows servers can accommodate Macs quite comfortably if they are properly configured. Just keep after the people if you are unable to obtain network access per the above information.
One thing that may help you is to learn about Directory Access (Utilities folder.) MacDevCenter has been running a series of articles on using Directory Access. That may be a good place to start along with reading the online help - launch DA and select DA Help from the Help menu.

Look for other Mac users on the campus who have learned to surmount the obstacles of the IS department.

  • I've stuck with Entourage way too long. Now I don't dare install the Mavericks OS because all my Entourage files will go away. And my iMac won't open Mac Mail (probably because I've never opened it in the 5 - 6 years I've owned the Mac.) Any suggestions?

If you are wondering why you are not getting any responses, it is because you have vented a complaint without any details that make any sense or give anyone something to work on.
If you want help, I suggest actually detailing what has happened, with versions of software etc. Anything that would let us assist.
As a start I am guessing that you have not really got the hang of "How it all works". Firstly download the Pages09_UserGuide.pdf from under the Help menu. Read that and view the Video Tutorials in the same place. A good addition would be the iWork 09 Missing manual book and something to help you learn how to use your Mac.

  • What is preferable order of connecting fw drives, Apogee Entourage and imac

I am having serious problems somewhere in my system of OS 10.6.2, Logic Express 9.1, an Apogee Entourage and two Pacific Pro Audio fw drives with Oxfodr 911 chipsets. LE crashes repeatedly on a daily basis, the Core audio clicks and it's gone. My connection order is the iMac to the PPA drives and then to the Apogee. I think that order dates from my days with Pro Tools, where they wanted to keep the interface at the end of the line. I think, maybe that's not right. Anyway, I can only see one downside to switching the order to iMac to Apogee to the drives, and that's that in order to use Time Machine and SuperDuper to clone my hard drive on the iMac, I have to have the Apogee turned on. Is that right? I'd like to try shifting the connection order to try to work around this bug inside Logic or the Lucent agree chips in my iMac. Any ideas?

Potentially bad advice - in a mission critical environment you want to ensure the audio is captured without glitches.
The original poster is correct in that the FW interface should precede the external HD in the chain.
I can confirm that a hub is not a desirable solution in this scenario.
I would seek to have the audio device on one channel and the HD(s) on another if at all possible - just remember that the bus will pass data in both directions at one time...do whatever can be done to reduce the path during typical recording operations. All other processes at other times will be secondary and unaffected by the configuration.

  • Lines jump/scroll up/down in Entourage and Excel (MS 2008)

In Entourage and Excel (since the last MS Office 2008 update I believe), the tope line jumps or scrolls up (out of view), then back down into view. WhenI try to scroll up to see top line, it jitters in and out of site (up/down). It is hard to type on or work with the first line in an email message or an Excell worksheet. Also, when i move the cursor vertically (mid window), it also jitters up/down.
I do not recall exactly when this started, but it may have been when I agreed to update MS Office from a prompt a while back. Funny thing is I never recall MS Office having 'updates' before (I surely could be wrong on that!)
The jittering is driving me batty. I have rebooted system to no avail.
    I'm running iMac OS 10.6.5, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.16GHz, 3GB memory

If it's an Intel Mac, you can upgrade it to Mac OS X 10.6.8.
If it's a PowerPC Mac, you need to use these instructions and/or iTunes Match to put content on the iPad.

  • I've updated my Macbook Pro and my iMac with Maverick, updating the various apps. On my Macbook, everything functions perfectly. On my iMac, I get the Your System has Run out of Application Memory, and it's based our Mail, the only app not updated. Ideas?

    Maverick and Your System message
I've updated my Macbook Pro and my iMac with Maverick, updating the various apps (Pages, Aperture, iPhoto, Numbers & iMovie, too) in the process.
On my Macbook, everything functions perfectly. On my iMac, I get the Your System has Run out of Application Memory message. But it's not Calendar, it's Mail that not only won't open, but when it does now, it takes the entire system out with it.
I open Safari, and it works. I open Firefox, and it works and Safari still works. I open Calendar and it works, Safari and Firefox continue to work. I open Reminders, and everything still works.
I open Aperture, and it opens Finder instead, showing the 3.5 update that was installed two days ago (and Aperture has functioned), but doesn't seem to update the app; after about 20 seconds the update disappears and I can now open Aperture and it shows I'm now opening the updated Aperture, which it didn't show before.
I click on Mail, and the cursor spins for ten minutes. The mail window finally opens, but the cursor spins and does not connect to upload new mail, and I finally Force Quit Mail. Since the Maverick update, even though Mail was not updated (and maybe because Mail was not updated), I have been able to receive emails twice, and then the program crashed.
Besides the Aperture app, Pages didn't fully update on the iMac, and I had to remove the old Pages icon from the dock after the new program loaded up from Applications.
    Any ideas?

  • I have a mac air and an iMac and both have Pages. I use Pages on my air and save all documents to iCloud. I can see them on my iMac but it won't open with Pages. It becomes visible if I change it to open with preview but I can't interact with it.

I have an mac air and an iMac 5k - pages runs on both.  I use pages on my air and save all my documents to iCloud drive. I can see the documents on my iMac but some won't open in pages which is bizarre? They will open if I change it to open with preview but then all I can do is read it  - I can't add to the document - All I want is to be able to see all my documents on all my devices and to be able to have them sync so I can add to the documents from  any of my devices. I also have an iPhone 6 and an iPadair2 but I would be happy just to have the iMac and macair sync for starters. I have folders within folders in my documents,. The folders which contain pdf's and individual files open OK . The one I am having difficulty with is the file which I use for ongoing correspondence - in other words it is quite long - I keep adding to it  ( by copying letters in and letters out so I can see a sequential history of what has been going on by scrolling down ) in date order so that it could be 1 - 100 pages long - but I don't think the size is a problem. I don't understand why some folders can open and others not . Has anyone any suggestions please. I have been trying to get this to work for months since iCloud drive came in. It has got much better but it is still not good enough  - or maybe it's me?

All I can suggest is that you open that file on the MBA and save it as a new file, then see if you can open the new one on the iMac.

  • I want to hide my time capsule so a burglar cannot find it (we were broken into last week and our imac taken).

So, I would like to keep it separate from my BT wireless router. Is this stupid? Will my wireless connection be weaker as a result?
I would like my BT router to sit in the downstairs study with my macbook and replacement imac connecting wirelessly to it. Then I would like my time capsule to be hidden away elsewhere out of sight in the event of another break in. It seems silly connecting it to the router so that a thief could easily swipe it if they try to come in again - and then my backups are gone. But on the other hand, don't apple recommend that the time capsule is your main wireless hub rather than simply annexing it to your existing network?
Will the backups be much slower if the time capsule is stored elsewhere?
Will I be unable to connect my printer to the wireless network?
    Thanks, all advice appreciated

Interesting post.. first of its kind I have read.

Not stupid in the circumstances.. i hope you had contents insurance and got it replaced and had backups of your files.
You cannot wireless link the TC to the BT router.. you can ethernet connect them.. or use ethernet replacement like EOP adapters.

You can use it in bridge as a wireless access point plus hard disk. That will not affect the network.
Backup speed will depend on the wireless connection to your BT router.. that will be the issue. Unless you do some tricky stuff and use a secondary wireless client in the computer.. a usb stick could be plenty for the internet access but stick with TC for local lan.. but this might be getting too complicated.
Is the printer a wireless network printer or needs to be usb connected?
If the printer is wireless type then no issues.. but even that can be worked around.
The TC doesn't have wall mount holes, unlike the old discus version.. which was very neat.. On the other hand you can remove the rubber mat easily with a hot air gun and easily remove the bottom aluminium cover so to add wall or ceiling mount holes.. ceiling mount is excellent as a thief will probably never look there. or find it too hard to reach and if you screw it down well.. which you have to as it weighs a bit, then the rf radiation pattern is near ideal. Stupid apple for removing design features from one model (eg POE as well) in the old model for aesthetics only design.

I dont think you will be able to print directly to your ricoh printer.  It is not on the list of airprint machines, and none of the ricoh apps seemed aimed at printing from a pad.
You will need to get an app such as print and share, or printopia, etc and print via your computer.

  • How do I share files between a PowerPC 8100 OS 7.6.1 and an iMac OS 10.7.4 over ethernet

How do I share files between a PowerPC 8100 OS 7.6.1 and an iMac OS 10.7.4 over peer to peer ethernet connection? I'm trying to get data off the old machine so I can retire it for good. Can I just save the data and worry about file conversion later?

    Addendum
There is a relatively simple server-based way of avoiding difficulties with incompatible system versions et cetera. It could possibly be of some interest.
I tested the following between a System 7.5.3 PowerBook 540 and a Windows XP PC. It ought to work with a System 7.6.1 Power Macintosh 8100 and a MacOS X 10.7.4 iMac as well.
    a) Download and install Microsoft Personal Web Server 1.0 for Macintosh onto the 8100. If the 8100 does not have a direct Internet connection, carry out the download on another computer, and then try to transfer the hqx file (as it is) on a CD-R (burn at a low speed) or a 1.44 MB floppy (use StuffIt Expander to decode the hqx on the 8100). Do not change or add anything after the installation; just leave the files as they are.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/164571
    b) Drag a compressed example archive (we can call it example_file.sit) to the folder My Personal Web Site (there are other files inside this folder; do not worry about them). Ensure that the compression format is compatible with a decompression tool on the receiving computer.
    c) Many people have access to a router (wired or wireless) with a built-in Ethernet switch (usually something like four LAN ports). If applicable, disconnect any incoming Internet (the WAN port). If possible/necessary, switch off the wireless (see the router manual for details about this).
    d) Switch off both computers (and the router).
    e) Connect an AAUI to RJ-45 transceiver (such as the aforementioned Apple Ethernet Twisted-Pair Transceiver) to the AAUI port of the 8100.
    f) Connect an Ethernet cable from the transceiver to the first LAN port of the router.
    g) Connect an Ethernet cable from the second LAN port of the router to the iMac.
    h) Switch on the router.
    i) Start the computers.
    j) The TCP/IP control panel on the 8100 is set to connect via Ethernet. DHCP Server is used in this case.
    k) Open the Microsoft Personal Web Server control panel.
    l) Click on the Start button.
    m) Wait (can take a while).
    n) Notice the exact address at My URL (under Monitor Web Site). Could be something like http://192.168.1.2 (depends on the router).
    o) Launch a web browser on the iMac (I did the testing on the PC with Firefox and Safari).
    p) Enter the exact address (see n above) in the browser's address field (http://192.168.1.2 in my example). Press Return. A standard web page should appear. Disregard this page for now.
    q) Add the exact file name (example_file.sit) to the address shown in the field. The result would be http://192.168.1.2/example_file.sit in my case. Press Return.
    r) The file should start to download to the modern computer.
All the above is intended for a local connection only (otherwise security settings become of importance), and should be considered purely experimental. There are further possibilities (including an FTP plug-in), but it also makes everything more complicated. I have not tested the behaviour with large files or with various files types. Sometimes the server may crash. If so, try a restart. Make sure that you have backup copies of important files already at the 8100 before you begin.
    Good luck!

You cannot officially do this Apple's way as they do not support your computer for Airplay.
There is a software solution called Airparrot that you may want to demo:
