  • DVDSP run under Leopard?

    Hi!
I've been combing eBay for a copy of FCS or FCS2 and been researching how DVDSP 3 or 4 runs under Leopard before I purchase.  Unfortunately I see a lot of folks that have had issues running DVDSP 3 or 4 (FCS or FCS 2) under Leopard.
Essentially, I am currently running 10.5.8 on a G5 1.8 DP and I am looking for a version of DVDSP that will run under this so I don't have to use a dual boot system just to burn DVDs.  Is there a version of DVDSP that will run under this configuration, or do I have to buy an Intel Mac?
Additionally, if I do buy an Intel Mac, can I get  away with a MacBook to run DVDSP and FCP and save the heavy lifting of Motion and/or Color for a desktop?
    Thanks!

I don't have any significant experience with Leopard other than on a Mac Pro, but I've had full FCS2 installs running on 2.5GHz G5 dualies (Tiger) since it was released and have both FCS2 and FCS3 running on Snow Leopard flawlessly.
Apple says you need an Intel processor to run FCS3, but the Get Info for FCP7 says the code is universal and therefore it may run on a G5. Irrespective of that, DVDSP4 should run fine on your G5.
As for what you can "get away with" on a MacBook, you may find that the lack of firewire on recent MacBooks a problem. Additionally, I'm not sure about the video support. The MacBook Pro is a better choice, but more expensive. You may want to look into a used Mac Pro as an alternative.

  • Will my programs run under Leopard?

I have a G5 iMac currently running Tiger and I am thinking of upgrading to Leopard. I am wondering if I will need to upgrade some of my programs as well. They are Quicken 2004, Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional, Adobe elements 2, Fetch 4.0.3, Microsoft Office 2004, Superduper 2.5.
    Thanks
    Jerry

Your SuperDuper and Office are good, I run Quicken '05 however.

  • Some images created in Tiger unusable under Leopard - can crash Aperture

I have tried both updates and clean installs of Leopard on my MBP and external firewire disks. In both cases I find that a large number of images in my libraries (built under Tiger), give Aperture fits. For example, whilst I can see thumbnails, I can't export versions - messages come up to say the images can't be decoded. Similarly, if I try to edit or view some images full screen, I get a message saying "unsupported format". At times, trying to work with these images crashes Aperture.
In a couple of cases, I still have the offending images on cards and I was then able to import them anew into Aperture (running under Leopard) - these work OK.
Boinx Fotomagico under Leopard stopped running and quit without warning trying to run previously created slideshows that incorporate some of the above-mentioned images.
I conclude that there is a problem with Leopard's treatment of images rather than Aperture specifically. However, I have no clue how to address the problem. At present Leopard is just unusable for me.

I'm aware of anomalies when using Numbers under Leopard.
Maybe you met one which I ignored.
Knowing such of these problems, I decided to use Tiger as my main operating system.
Here, as I play safety, Leopard is always in test, not in real use.

  • How to allow access to web service running under ApplicationPoolIdentity

    Hi All,
I have a WCF web service hosted in IIS 7 (or maybe 7.5, whichever comes with Windows server 2008 R2) using DefaultAppPool running under ApplicationPoolIdentity per Microsoft's recommendation. The web service needs to call a stored procedure to insert data
to a db. The web server is on a different VM than the database server. The db server is running SQL 2008 R2. Both VMs run Windows server 2008 R2.
When the web service tries to connect to db, it encounters this exception:
Exception in InsertToDb()System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'.
       at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection)
Here's the connection string in web.config:
    Application Name=somewebservice;Server=somewebserver;Integrated Security=SSPI;Database=somedatabase;Connection Timeout=60"
How should I configure SQL security to make this work?
    Thanks in advanced.

Thanks for the link Dan. Maybe I'm the one who cause the confusion :)
If I understand you(and Erland) correctly, you suggest using a custom, domain account for application pool identity. However, if we do that, our IT will need to maintain those accounts, and they don't  want that. So I'm choosing a built-in account called
ApplicationPoolIdentity as the application pool identity, but it's not working. Network Service, on the other hand, works, but my boss wants us to follow MS's best practice.
What's puzzling is that according to this: http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/624/application-pool-identities/, both Network Service and ApplicationPoolIdentity uses machine account to access network resource (like db in this case), but in my case, Network Service
    works, but not ApplicationPoolIdentity.
    Hallo Stephen,
with respect - it seems to me that only idiots are working at your IT ;)... It is absolutely useful to work with "service accounts" created within the domain. That's the only way to manage and control accounts!
If you want to "pass through" the identity of the web user (SSO) you have to check whether the app pool is set to "allow impersonate". As far as I understand the ApplicationPoolIdentity-function the app pool will create a unique user named as the service.
I assume that will not work with the connection to the sql server because this user is unknown.
Local Service will not work because it's restriction is located to the local machine.
Network Service will work because access to network resources will be available.
So my recommendation is to use a dedicated service account or impersonation:

  • Spontaneous Intel iMac Reboot under Leopard

I have three upgraded machines running under Leopard, two MacBooks and one Intel iMac. On only the Intel iMac I am experienced what can best be described as spontaneous reboots. Suddenly while working (web browsing with Safari) the screen will blank, no sound and reboot to the login screen.
Has happened twice in the last two days ... anyone else seeing this problem? Solution?

Same sort of problem here. We use the machine primarily for viewing TV in the kitchen with eyeTV. There is no clear pattern to the reboots. This log shows the timestamps of recent reboots.
    Nov 25 21:47:21 iLife bootlog[46]: BOOT_TIME: 1196045228 0

    Dec 3 17:23:53 iLife bootlog[46]: BOOT_TIME: 1196720623 0
Since 11/29 all other apps but eyeTV have been turned and kept off. Two reboots since. We have eyeTV running on two other machines (iMac G5 and MacPro) with no problems so we do not believe the issue is that software. Will happily provide syslogs to Apple if they are interested.

  • Microsoft Exchange server / OSX / Mail / entourage

Just a quick question about this, as a friend of my Dad's has been giving him grief because he doesn't ever receive receipts that emails have been received / opened / read etc.
As far as I know Apple Mail doesn't support Microsoft Exchange Server, but Entourage does - but is it as simple as my Dad using Entourage, or does it need to on a network using Microsoft Exchange Server?
And if so, does this mean that two, common or garden home PC users using Windows Mail or Outlook wouldn't get email receipts from each other either?

what would the situation be with two, bog standard home PCs using XP/Vista and Outlook Express/Windows Mail - would they generate and receive receipt notifications with each other?
Windows Mail and Outlook Express both support receipts (do a web search to find more information and instructions). But they will get receipts only if the receiving email client supports them, so the recipient must also be running one of those two applications or one of the other rare email applications that does. And receipts in Internet-standard email really doesn't mean much; it may return even if the email is selected, or, as is apparently the case with both Outlook Express and Windows Mail, the recipient can disallow sending back the receipt which if true rather defeats the purpose.
where does the Microsoft Exchange Server come into it, which was what I thought powered these?
It may or may not. Both Outlook Express and Windows Mail are standard email applications and work with any standard email server. If the ISP/company/organization is using Exchange and has it set up for POP and/or IMAP, you can use any email application with the server including OE or Windows Mail. But you don't get any of the features an Exchange Server provides: shared calendaring, "real" delivery/read receipts (ones the user can't disallow), etc. For those you must use Outlook.

  • My app will no longer run under Snow Leopard, runs fine under Lion.

My app will no longer run under Snow Leopard, even though it was originally written for Snow Leopard.  It runs fine on my Dev machine under Lion. But when I test it on my Snow Leopard Mac Mini the app starts but the window does not appear. Going to file, new window does nothing. My depolyment target is set to 10.6. Is there something I did to make my app lose Snow Leopard compatiblty?

Does your application use features only available in Lion?  Are you getting any console logs?

  • Hello, I have a Macbook pro which runs under 10.5.8. I want to use a PC interface. been told I need to purchase paralellDestop 6, Windows & Microsoft 2008licence?

Hello, I have a Macbook pro which runs under 10.5.8. I want to use a PC interface. I've been told I need to purchase paralell Destop 6, Windows licence and Microsoft Office 2008 for PC. Is that correct ?

If you have a MacBook Pro with 10.5, that's usually a machine that's getting long in the tooth and thus running Windows as a virtual machine (one OS inside another) will likely be slow.
Also spending all that money for Windows (VirtualBox is free) and Office seems like almost a waste of effort if the machine is going to die suddenly.
MacBook Pro's last about 4-5 years.
To do what you want your going to have to upgrade OS X to 10.6, then either buy VMFusion or Parallels which they are now catering to 10.7 and 10.8 users, so it's slow on 10.6, or use the free VirtualBox which will run well on 10.6. Then buy a copy of Windows 7 as earlier Windows versions are not being sold, then Office 11 or whatever.
You can also install OfficeMac into 10.6, if they still sell a copy.
You see your outdated really, and anything that can work is soon to be ignored etc.
What I would consider doing instead, since your not a OS upgrade type of person (we are on 10.8 now which won't run on your machine or be extremely slow) is to buy yourself a decent Windows 7 laptop and install Office into that. Some have the demo already inside and all you have to do is activate it.
This way you get your Windows experience and Office experience, don't have to fiddle with complicated virtual machine software, or Apple's problematic Bootcamp etc as Apple really is leaving 10.5 and 10.6 users behind, and by next summer will be leaving 10.7 users behind too.
Windows 7 laptop will be the cheapest and least stressful option for you, you can continue to use the Mac until it drops dead of course.
I say this because your on 10.5, your like most computer users, just a computer user and not a geek.
You obviously have some reason you need Office, likely for a job or school and since 99% use Windows and Office, then that's what you should be using.
If your only needing Office or Office like program for something temporary, then I suggest you install the free LibreOffice into OS X, however I don't know if it will run in 10.5, you might have to upgrade to 10.6 via the 10.6.3 white retail disk, however Apple doesn't sell it anymore, but perhaps Amazon or elsewhere does.
Sorry, you have been out of the upgrade loop for quite some time, so a new machine is in order as that one is about to die soon, so I wouldn't be spending too much on it really.
If you have a fat wallet you can buy a new Mac with 10.8, and have Windows 7 installed in BootCamp (direct boot) and also into VMFusion or Parallels (copies the Bootcamp Windows so you can use both) and Office for you. It will come all set up, enter your password and use the machine.
I think OtherWorld Computing will sell you a pre-configured Mac all set up like that for you, Apple won't do it though.
You can also pay a local PC/Mac specialist to do the same.
Don't forget setting up a backup system for both Windows and OS X, add anti-malware software in Windows, you'll need that.
IMO a new Windows 7 laptop would be the cheaper, less stressful option, Learning Bootcamp and virtual machine software can be a pain if your not computer savvy, al;so Apple has a nasty habit of upgrading the operating system constantly, now on a annual basis. You don't upgrade and all your third party software, then your denied security updates in short order. Windows 7 laptop will last a decade on the same version, only needing simple updates, not upgrades.
If you want your Windows machine to last even longer, like a decade, then get a desktop tower instead of a laptop.
Mac's are for those who can handle a lot of change, as Apple is about always inflicting change.  It's costly change too.
    Good Luck
Windows in BootCamp or Virtual Machine?
Things to consider before upgrading OS X

  • Moving from Photoshop starter to a program running under Microsoft 7 and retaining captions & tags

I have Photoshop Version 1 running under Microsoft XP.  The computer died.  I need to move my pictures and equally importantly the tags and captions that have have been attached to the pictures.  I have downloaded Photoshop Elements 9 and I have been told that they will not support Version 1.  I can move the pictures without any difficulty, but not the captions nor the tags.  I also downloaded Photoshop 3.0 starter edition and the captions will come over, but not the tags.  I have all the pictures, the catalog file and the thumb file backed up before the computer crashed.  I do have access to another XP machine that I can load the older Photoshop Version 1 and restore my pictures, then can I can backup these files and imbed the captions and tags in the individual pictures?  Your help and suggestions are appreciated.  Thank you.

Uh, are you sure you have Photoshop v.1?
The first version of Photoshop that ran on Windows was Photoshop 2.5.
Are you talking about Photoshop Elements? This is the "Photoshop" forum...you'll want to post in the "Photoshop Elements" forum...

  • Microsoft Exchange Transport Service....Starting (Does not reach a running state, stops and tries starting again)

    Hi All,
After installing the lovely update (https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/ms14-068) that Microsoft released last week. I restarted my exchange 2013 server and now the Microsoft Exchange Transport Service will not start. It is pretty much constantly
in a starting state. Tried all the standard stuff, restarting the server etc.
    Running on Server 2012 R2
Hopefully someone can shed some light.
    Pete

    Hi,
    A few questions here :
    - Have you installed all roles on the same server ? ( MultiRole server )
    - If yes, do use the preconfigured receive connectors from Exchange or did you add custom connectors ?
    - Do you have any anti-spam service installed on the server that could be listening on port 25 ?

  • I currently use Snow Leopard and Microsoft Word, Excel and Entourage o my Mac.  If I upgrade to Mavericks, can I still use those applications?

I currently use Snow Leopard with Microsoft Word, Excel and Entourage on my iMac.  If I upgrade to Mavericks, can I still use those applications?

If the Microsoft Office is 2004 then no.
    Mavericks System requirements.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5842
Note I would recommend a minimum of 4GB RAM.
You need to check all you software and hardware including any peripherlas you use, printers etc that they are compatible with Mavericks.
Any software that is PPC and uses Rossetta will not work with any OS X verson later than 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.
If you decide to upgrade have a tested backup of your current system in case of problems and you could return the computer to its previous configuration.

  • I have a macbook pro running lion and it will not log on to a microsoft exchange server. any suggestions

i have a macbook pro running lion and cannot log on to my microsoft exchange server.  Not a problem with my iphone and ipad are there any issues or fixes for this?

I found the following suggested fix, posted by a user on Barnes & Noble's site:
    1. Create a folder in your Applications folder, call it: NOOKforMac
Once you've done this, copy the Nook app to this folder. This should allow the app to run on the 1st or possibly second attempt to launch it.
    2. Once you're done using the app always quit it by clicking on the X (red in some cases) button of the application window (upper left hand corner)
This seems to have resolved the issue and my guess is that somehow the .dmg volume path is somewhere hard coded in the app configuration.
