Use JRE 1.1.7v3 and instead of running the runInstaller program,
cd into the /install/linux directory and run the runins.sh shell
script, not sure if that is the exact name but you'll find it.
Not sure what changed between 6.0 and 6.1 to make this necessary
but this is how i got it to work. Everything besdeis this intial
installer problem is the only difference I've seen so far.

Nope, it works without any problems on 6.1. It was on 6.2 I had the problem, and when I tried doing everything locally on 6.2, it works there too.
Here is a list of packages that I installed, which made the difference.

Redhat 5.3 and Oracle 11 G Lun Layout

We are migrating from Solaris 9 running Oracle 9 to Redhat 5.2 running Oracle 11G. The new server will be a standalone server (no RAC) with 4 databases. The plan is to put the 4 databases on a single 1 TB EMC Symmetrix Meta Lun formated with EXT3 (no LVM)
32 GB Symmetrix Meta-lun1 - Redo and Control files
32 GB Symmetrix Meta-lun2 - Redo and Control files
32 GB Symmetrix Meta-lun4 - Redo and Control files
300 GB Symmetrix Meta-lun4 - Archive Log Space
300 GB Symmetrix Meta-lun5 - Archive Log Space
1TB Symmetrix Meta-Lun6 - Database Files ( 4 Databases 700 GB ) EXT3 - no LVM
My question is does anyone see a problem with this design? ( FTR this is not my design )

All worked well.
Now RedHat 6.0 is out. Very many things have changed quite a bit.
How is the impact on Oracle ?
Well for one thing, the binaries core dump during install,
have anybody installed Oracle on RH6 ? Please give me a tip.

RedHat 7.2 and Oracle 8.1.7 JRE Hangs

I have just installed RedHat 7.2 (workstation - did up2date -u)
and am trying to get Oracle 8.1.7 installed as well. After
doing a 'startx' as the oracle user, I then goto the mounted
cdrom drive and issue ./runInstaller. I then get the message:
"Initializing Java Virtual Machine
from ../stage/Components/oracle.swd.jre/1.1.8/1/DataFiles/Expande
d/linux/bin/jre. Please Wait....
However I am then dropped back to the shell and nothing further
happens. I do notice, however, that a 'jre' process remains
running, using 99% CPU resources, so it looks like something is
broken.
I have also followed the helpful webpage at
http://staff.in2.hr/denis/oracle/817install_rh72_en.html however
it made no difference. On a different box, I had done an
install of the same Oracle disk, but on a RedHat 6.2 box and
didn't have any problems.
Any help would be highly appreciated. Please feel free to email

first download and install jdk 1.1.8 version 3
from www.blackdown.org or ftp.redhat.com
(exactly jdk1.1.8 version 3, i don't know if anything
else would work or not)
then install the Red Hat Linux 6.2 compatibility packages
compat-egcs (compat-egcs-c++, compat-egcs-g++ and all
compat-egcs-XXX) , compat-glibc and compat-libs
(thses are found in the installation CDs 1 and 2 of redhat 7.2)
then beofre running the installer define the following
environment variables.
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5
export JAVA_HOME= <Path to jdk 1.1.8 v3)
export PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH
then source the following shell script by typeing the below line
as it is. (incuding the ".")
. /usr/i386-glibc21-linux/bin/i386 glibc21-linux-env.sh
then run the installer.
DON"T Create a Database or network setup during Installation.
Just Install Oracle 8i.
Once done.
check for any patches available from Oracle and apply them.
change the following two shell scripts.
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbassist
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/netasst
change the lastline
from :- $JRE -classpath ....
to :- $JRE -nojit -classpath ....
then ur ready to create a Database with dbassist and configure
ur network params with netasst.
also be sure to turn on the redo logs after u have configured
the DB, in linux they are disabled by default.
I have done this on RH7.1 and belive 7.2 would be no different.
just be sure of the jdk and other stuff .

I then tried a custom install of Dev. 6.0 but I removed product by product and the error always was "<product name> can't be installed into multiple oracle homes".
I deleted the whole Oracle 8.1.6 Client and just installed Dev. 6.0 into DEFAULT_HOME. I had a TNS-Error Can't resolve service name.
Copying the tnsnames.ora does not help. You have to manipulate it a litte bit, because Net8 TNSNAMES.ORA needs .world after the connect string.
My question now is: Is it a problem to connect with SQL-Plus 8.0.5 which was installed with Dev. 6.0 to a 8.1.6 Database ?

After reading a posting here I was able to get past the point where the installer hangs while linking to java 1.1.8. by export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1... I fail now with ORA-27123 unable to attach to shared memory segment...Any suggestions?

You have to increase the shmmax linux kernel parameter.I have set it to 2 Go.
But if you can start the softwares like net manager or oem console after the installation (all the softs with Java), you have to reply to me because I cannot use it with redhat9.

Oracle 9.0.1 installation on RH Linux 9 : Error in CreateOUIProcess : 13

I am trying to install Oracle 9.0.1 on Red Hat Linux 9 and in the process I am getting error.
I have installed jdk 1.3.1_15. In spite of setting JAVA_HOME, JDK_HOME, JRE_HOME to appropriate oracle installer does not picks up jre properly and tries to search it in bin/jre (this is wrt current directory , i.e. wrt diectory where runInstaller is present)
Hence finally I copied entire jre directory on above installation to bin/jre
After that oracle installer is able to pick up jre however it started giving error.
Initializing Java Virtual Machine from bin/jre. Please wait...
Error in CreateOUIProcess(): 13
: Permission denied
Please let me know if any changes are required in above process to rectify the error.

8i, runInstaller fails with "Error in CreateOUIProcess() -1"

I have 8i for Linux (both downloaded and CD arrived today).
I have Redhat 6.0 2.2.5-15 with Oracle required kernel mods.
I have applied all the updates from update.redhat.com;
specifically the one required to run installer with
Enlightenment.
I have 512M RAM and 18G of SCSI hard disk with 10G free.
I have Blackdown jdk-1.1.7v3 installed and /usr/local/jre link.
The jdk-1.1.7v3 runs some test Java programs and the Swing 1.1.1
demo just fine.
I have created the required user/groups.
I login as oracle and try to run the installer and I get the
following message:
Initializing Java Virtual Machine from /usr/local/jre/bin/jre.
Please wait...
Error in CreateOUIProcess(): -1
: No such file or directory
I get the same message if run from the downloaded copy or from
the CD.
Obviously the installer is expecting a directory which is missing
or which it doesn't have permission to acces BUT what
directory/file???
Any ideas?

I had a similar problem, but the error was that in /tmp the
installer was searching for the orainstall directory (all
lowercase) and not for the OraInstall; I have moved the
OraInstall dir into orainstall and everything worked

You need to run this Installer with the 'runIns.sh' script
instead of runInstaller.
%cd <cdrom-mount-point>/install/linux
%./runIns.sh

I have installed oracle 9i on SuSe 7.1 and Mandrake 8.0 successfully!!But when I want to install Oracle 8i and Oracle 9i on Redhat 7.1,it goes wrong! All installtion was successful.The last step is Link Pending and errors come~~~~:"Error in invoking target toolsinstall of make file /soft/oracle/product/9.0.1.0.0/ldap/lib/ins_ldap.mk".

Select 8i Enterprise edition in the select product box.
select 8.1.7 for linux.
You should see the glibc patch on this page.
you will need a userid and password to the oracle technology network, but these are free if you do not have one.

Hello, we have just downloaded the evaluation version of the Sun Global Desktop application and would like to test it to see if it suits our needs. We are actually testing this inside a virtual server (Linux Vserver) on CentOS 5 (basically the same thing as Redhat).

The Secure Global Desktop server cannot continue to run.
Fix the problem which caused the JServer to fail to start.It looks as if the RPM file is missing some files however I'd imagine everyone else would be having the same problem. Any ideas?

Oh well looks like we'll have to go with citrix.
