I can't picture what is doing this other than something missing or muxed, but perhaps it's time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Mounting external drive while in Single-User mode
Last night, a friend of mine's hard drive was failing in his Macbook (in San Diego, I'm in Colorado). Booting into normal mode would cause a lot of errors. He booted into single-user mode and could not figure out how to mount his firewire drive. I booted into single-user mode on my Macbook and hooked up my USB drive and did an 'ls -ltr /dev' to see if the device showed up. Since it did not show up on the listing of /dev, there's no obvious way to mount it. I can't seem to find any legitimate posting out there nor here. Is there an answer to this problem?
Thanks,
DavePerform the mount command listed here, using a different mount tool if it's not a Mac formatted drive.

Boot Snow Leopard from Thumb Drive in Single User Mode on Macbook Air
I'm trying to boot from a thumb drive that I transferred the Snow Leopard .dmg on. My macbook air only lets me get into single user mode. Every time I try to boot or enter safe mode or regular mode, the Macbook Air shuts down.
I do have the installation media on my usb flash drive. I'm sure it's leopard, and the problem is that I cannot get passed the apple logo on boot. The laptop turns off after trying to finish the boot for twenty seconds. However, I can get into single user mode. I just can't seem to install the media in single user mode due to my lack of know how.

G5 freezing - no problems with ASD - crashing also in single-user-mode
Hello,
I have a PowerMac7,1 with MacOS X Server 10.5.8, which today started freezing and restarting.
After the system froze, sometimes it restarts automatically, or I have to manually reboot it with the power button. In both cases the restart also froze!
The only way to start the system is the clean the PRAM, but after a while it is crashing again!
I managed to run the full ASD 2.5.7 test without error for a few hours (then I stopped), and with the install DVD I also managed to run the system repair (there was nothing to repair).
Both from the system and from the install DVD I cannot run the repair permissions (it freezes!). So I tried to execute "fsck -fy" from the single-user-mode, but the computer froze again!
Is there something else I can try?
Thanks a lot!Two things: DiskWarrior. New HD.
It seems that the crashes are coming into play when the HD is in the game in a meaningful sense, which isn't the case with the install disk or ASD, unless you are trying to do something like disk repair or permissions repair from the install disk. What's interesting is that you can boot into single-user mode, but when you invoke fsck, you crash, whereas disk repair from the install disk, which in essence fsck, runs and reports no errors.
You can also try a safe boot and see how things run there. If you can do that, I would suggest running AppleJack on the system, if you can.
Finally, it's possible that NVRAM has gotten corrupted (a possibility but not a high possibility) so an NVRAM reset might help things out.
After trying the safe-boot and NVRAM routes, if no help, my next tool would be DiskWarrior. In the past, I have had situations where DW found problems that Disk Utility didn't find, though that was in DW 3, probably. Fortunately (knock on wood) DW 4 has not had to confront a disaster situation yet for me. -
Restarts in single user mode since install
Hi,
I've only seen this problem on one of my computers. Since installing SL (from family disk), when restarting or starting from full shut down, the MBAir starts in Single User mode with command lines. I actually think it showed the GUI for about 2 seconds then goes into the command line text. Shows a bunch of the usual stuff about MAC framework initiations and lines about kernel dependency. I don't see any error lines repeated (but I do not understand much of the code) and it does not offer me a prompt. After about 1 minute, it launches the OS X gui and everything else is fine.
I updated the 10.6.1 - same problem persists.
So far I've verified, repaired some permission, PRAM, and tech tools basic. Do I need to do some deeper investigating? Any ideas?
Thanks

Extremely slow startup/"Error loading kernel" when single user mode is run
My daughter's iMac has become very poorly responsive with a very slow startup time. It takes about 1 minute for the progress wheel to begin when I startup her machine. And then it takes another 2 1/2 to 3 minutes before the login screen appears. The computer runs very slowly with the spinning activity wheel occurring frequently. When I start it up in single user mode I get the following message on screen:

Could some one tell me what this means? And better still, what do I need to do to fix it?

Errors while Changing the Database to Mutli User Mode from Single user mode in SQL Server 2012
Hi,
Good Afternoon :). Need your help in resolving one of the issue with SQL Server 2012.
Today, we kept one of the database in the Single User mode and wanted to bring back to Multi User mode. But we are getting the below error. There are no user sessions connected to this database which are blocking each other. I see multiple
SYSTEM sessions are in blocked state. The blocking is not cleared even affter restarting the SQL services.
Verified the SQL Server Errorlog and couldnt get much useful information to troubleshoot the issue.
pasted the information from the sys.sysprocesses as well for your kind reference.

Freezing with blue screen & can't boot from single user mode or disk
My keyboard is wired and plugged directly into my Intel iMac running OSX 10.5.8. I do not have the Leopard disks, but I do have the Tiger disks. I was trying to boot in single-user mode so that I could run AppleJack to try to fix another issue I'm having--I get the light blue startup screen flashed at me several times daily for the past week or so. When the blue screen flashes, it totally freezes my computer (obviously) and lasts from 1-10 seconds. I can't find anything that is triggering it. I haven't installed anything new that I'm aware of, and it happens whether the computer has previously been slept or not. I'm also not using an external display / additional monitor.
Also, for anyone who is nice enough to answer, please explain everything--I'm not an expert user.Well since it is so time consuming and a security risk to turn off FileVault, I was hoping to hear from someone with more experience if this was the solution, or just something to "try"? Are you speaking from experience or just making a suggestion, leroydouglas? Thanks.

Installing from Single User Mode
I had to wipe my internal hard drive on my iMac G5 (the model just prior to the Intel Macs). I did this from another Mac using FireWire mode.... anyway...
I can boot in Single User mode, but how can I tell it to install from the Tiger Installer in the DVD drive.. I just don't know Unix much..
The machine will boot from the Install disc but shuts down before it actually boots.... Stays on in Single User mode though.. thanksThanks for everyone's advice, but it's gone.... After a few attemps and getting it up and running, with a new system installed, it just shut down one last time and has a nice burnt aroma to it....
I pulled the power supply out and it smelled fine on it's own and it seemed be burnt somewhere in the computer... If I let it sit for a while, I can start it up, but then it shuts down and stays down for a long time...
It's now a 17" paper weight..... No data was lont, sine I backed it up just prior to the problem.
Pretty good record though. I've owned Macs way back to my PowerPC 7600 days (and even my old Apple 2e and II gs) and this is the first Mac that I will ever have to toss.. I'm happy about that... Still got my Intel iMcac and MacBook Pro (but my mother-in-law inherits my old Macs and she passes her's to her son. She's bummbed she'll miss this one.. She'll have to live with the iMac (shpere type) one for a while longer....)

Unable to boot normally - Always need to boot with Single User Mode
Hi Community,
Since last few days, I am unable to boot my Macbook Pro normally, running latest version of OS X Yosemite. When I boot, it goes to grey screen with Apple logo and progress bar, once the progress completes to 100% (after 5-10 minutes which is very longer than usual), it asks me to 'Select language' which seems like fresh installation of OS X. In that case, when I click next and it doesn't detect my SSD (blank list of select installation disk/drive).
After reading some threads, I found work-around and always need to boot into Single user mode (by pressing Command+S during power on) and then need to run following commands...
/sbin/fsck -fy
/sbin/mount -uw /
"device is write protected" numerous times
reboot
and then only it loads OS X and displays login screen. This happens all the times and I need to follow above steps always to get login screen.
How can I fix this? Please help me out here. I tried booting it off a USB flash drive with ATV flash but that gave me some errors and prompted me to login with username [email protected] with password frontrow
But I am not sure how to get to login using a suitable input. I tried to telnet it using my PC over network but I dont think it has initialized anything (like wifi or network) at the prompt. Would it take USB keyboard input? All I can do is remove the power and restart it with the usb flash out and get into then get into the recovery loop. I am not sure replacing the hard-drive would help. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Network / external access when booted in single-user mode from install CD?
So I have this iBook with a semi-functional hard drive: can't boot from it (either normal or single-user), can't use it in Firewire Target Disk mode, can't fix it with Disk Utility, an overnight run with Disk Warrior seemed to be hung, etc, BUT if I boot in single-user mode from the install CD I can then mount it readonly and see at least many of the files on it.
So now I want to slurp the important ones of those files off of it over the network (or in any other clever way anyone can suggest). I'm not a huge Unix or Darwin expert, so an exact set of commands would be appreciated. *8) A friend suggested to me that I might be able to 'init' it at a 'runlevel' that included the networking stack, but I dunno what that means. *8) Does the CD in fact include a full networking stack? Or anything else that I might be able to use to slurp some data from the hard disk before it gives up entirely?
Tx very...

I think Ronda was hoping you had the Tiger Instal DVD, which has a copy of Terminal on it.
You said earlier that trying to boot into Target Disk Mode didn't work. Would it help you if you could? If so, I can show you how to do it from Single User Mode. I've done it, and it works, although admittedly I did boot into SU mode from my HD, not my Instal Disc (I have tried that, it also works, I just haven't done both together).
If you can make use of this, post back and tell me what you get from which nvram when you are booted in SU mode from your CD. It's possible that command won't be available on the CD—so we need to check first. If it says "which: no such command", try ls -l /usr/sbin/nvram instead. -

As you can see, I'm still able to connect with sqlcmd prompt to SQL Server. According production doc of SQL Server 2014, it should not be conncting by sqlcmd. it shall only be connected by SSMS.
below the original doc on msdn:
Start SQL Server in Single-User Mode
Provide Feedback
Under certain circumstances, you may have to start an instance of SQL Server
in single-user mode by using the startup option -m. For
example, you may want to change server configuration options or recover a
damaged master database or other system database. Both actions require starting
an instance of SQL Server in single-user mode.
Starting SQL Server in single-user mode enables any member of the computer's
local Administrators group to connect to the instance of SQL Server as a member
of the sysadmin fixed server role. For more information, see Connect to
SQL Server When System Administrators Are Locked
Out.
When you start an instance of SQL Server in single-user mode, note the
following:
Only one user can connect to the server.
The CHECKPOINT process is not executed. By default, it is executed
automatically at startup.
Note
Stop the SQL Server Agent service before connecting to an instance of SQL
Server in single-user mode; otherwise, the SQL Server Agent service uses the
connection, thereby blocking it.
When you start an instance of SQL Server in single-user mode, SQL Server
Management Studio can connect to SQL Server. Object Explorer in Management
Studio might fail because it requires more than one connection for some
operations. To manage SQL Server in single-user mode, execute Transact-SQL
statements by connecting only through the Query Editor in Management Studio, or
use the
sqlcmd utility.
When you use the -m option with sqlcmd or
Management Studio, you can limit the connections to a specified client
application. For example, -m"sqlcmd" limits connections to a
single connection and that connection must identify itself as the
sqlcmd client program. Use this option when you are starting
SQL Server in single-user mode and an unknown client application is taking the
only available connection. To connect through the Query Editor in Management
Studio, use -m"Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio - Query".
ShawnHi Shawn Xiao,
For starting SQL Server instance in single user mode, we can add –m; parameter in SQL Server Configuration Manager, also we can run CMD with ‘Run as administrator’ and input the following statement.
NET START MSSQLSERVER /m
I do a test in SQL Server 2014 Express version, after starting SQL with Single User Mode, SQL Server will only accept one connection. If you connect to SQL Server with a user account, the following error will occur.
Login failed for user ‘domain\username’. Reason: Server is in single user mode. Only one administrator can connect at this time.
However, in your situation, you can connect to SQL Server and run T-SQL statement successfully, it can be due to connection with the administrator account in your sqlcmd.
For more information, you can review the following article.

Bluetooth errors (hundreds) in single-user mode
Never had this in Tiger or Panther but...
When starting in single-user mode I get hundreds of USB Bluetooth errors.
Also all too often (approx. every other day) when rebooting I loose use of my Bluetooth Apple keyboard and have to use Leopard Cache Cleaner to clean the user and system caches... after which the keyboard is once again functional.
Even though */sbin/fsck -fy* gives the system an okay after the hundreds of errors... I can restart and again get the same errors.
Here is an image of what it looks like (a little blurry but if you're familiar with such errors perhaps you'll recognize them). If necessary I'll take another photo of the screen and post it.
http://www.theimagecache.com/downloadarea/forum_images_misc/single_usererror.html
Thanks for any advice on how to get rid of these errors once-and-for-all.A wireless bluetooth keyboard would only let you boot into Single User Mode, after that, you will need a regular USB keyboard to type in the prompts, same goes when doing a Hardware Test using the disc provided.
As for some users posted on this forum saying they have not able to continue the Single User Mode under a regular USB keyboard, I am afraid I am one of them... I have not been able to solve the problem as yet and it is kinda "annoying" that there "may be something wrong" with my iMac that I cannot perform fsck, nevertheless I have regularly booted from the OS disc and run Disk Utility, which is equivilent to booting to SUM, but supposingly much better, and my HD checks out fine... so at the moment I have no worries.
In my post there is another person who has regularly keeping me update about this problem and has deduced it maybe due to the internal bluetooth module and the USB inside... rather complex issue that may require me lengthy conversation with AppleCare or have something replace, or "worse" have my iMac sent away for a time for repair or replacement. Since my iMac is doing quite fine, I'll live with it for the moment...
Cheers -
Can't log in with valid password, can't boot from disk, can't access disk utility, in single user mode can't reset password as appears locked in caps mode with '?' for forward slash, can anyone help?
Which keyboard layout you were using? German, French ... I suppose your layout is reset to the default: US and you are unable to find the "?" or "/" ...
Please have a look into the keyboard viewer, to see how the layout of your keyboard is actually.
