Essbase Question

Hi all,
Currently I'm working on ASO Cube ,Version 11.1.2.
I'm Build my cube using rule files and the source is coming from sql server.Using Sql Interface I'm build the Cube and loading the data into the cube.My question is when I retrieve the data using excel Can I see the Sql Query which is pulling the data in Excel.
and I would like to know is there any alternate way where i can see the sql query for the data in Excel.(May be EIS)

The SQL is just the way to load the data into the cube. Once the data is there, there is no way to see the query that created it. It is the same with EIS.

ODI and Essbase - question about updating structure (temp otls)

I'm running an interface that intends to update a dimension structure with the data from my respective dimension in Oracle relational. Actually a pretty simple interface using the KM "IKM SQL to
Hyperion Essbase (METADATA)". The execution is running fine with no errors and the structure is updated as expected, however we noticed that there are otl files being created in a tmp folder and they're never deleted. This folder is in the essbase server (/tmp). If I run this interface many times in a day, I'll have as many files in this folder as executions I did. So my question is if anybody knows why those files are being created and why they are not removed from there when the interface execution ends.
Thinking ahead, I'll have to create a shell script to clean up this folder in order to never have storage issues with those temporary otl files.

     Agreed.
     I also think those files were created by the java APIs. Just for testing purposes, I ran the rule manually and those otls were not created. This is one more reason for me to believe on this theory.
     However, what makes me think is: no one else got this issue? What are you guys doing with those files?
     Maybe there is some setup I have to do and those files will not be created anymore.

Essbase Backup

Is this the correct forum to post Essbase questions?
We are using Begin Archive and End Archive (EssCmd) to run file system backups on Essbase applications and databases. We've run into a problem ending the archive. We think it is a conflict with a user running a process. We are looking at embedding it in Java with the API and error trapping. Is there a method that works using only Maxl or EssCmd scripts?

We are using the following steps for back up for around 35 databases in version 7.1
1.     Login to server.
2.     Logout All users using LOGOUTALLUSERS command
3.     Disable Login for each individual Appname in sequential order- using DISABLELOGIN command for all 35 db
4.     Selecting individual appname and dbname.
5.     Export data for selected app and db
6.     Unload Application
7.     Enable Login for that selected Database.
But we are facing problem like even though all the users are logged out and by the time it selects a particular app and db and exports, if any other user request access to some other app name or database, Essbase allows the complete read/write access for the same. Due to which we get dbname.esm file getting locked out and corrupted.
To avoid the users to have any write mode capability, can we use BEGINARCHIVE and ENDARCHIVE commands?
What I have thought will be the changed steps after we add these 2 commands-
1. Login to AZ18NT169 server.
2. Disable Login for each individual Appname in sequential order- using DISABLELOGIN command.
3. Logout All users using LOGOUTALLUSERS command.
4. Beginarchive for each db
5. Selecting individual appname and dbname
6. Exporting data for that selected app name and dbname.
7. Unload Application (Stops the specified application)
8. EndArchive for each db
9. Enable Login for that selected Database.
Please let me know if I can achieve my goal of making sure that db is completely in read only mode after we log out all users and if any users request access it will be only read only?

Income Statement & Balance Sheet Reporting via a single ASO cube

Hi All,
I wanted to get some perspective on industry best practices as it relates to performing Income Statement & Balance Sheet reporting via a single Essbase ASO cube. As both these areas share a lot of common dimensions, do most of the companies implement a single cube for integrated reporting or split cubes and have tools like HFR, Web Analysis etc. combine the information from those cubes for integrated cube.
Appreciate any thoughts on this.

Who has built a "Day" dimension?

We have "Year" and "Period" for month. That's the typical set up for most of us. But has anyone built a "Day" dimension to keep track of data on a daily basis? If so, how would you build that?

Is that an Essbase question?
I've not seen a Day dimension in BSO. However it is just like any other dimension.
It can be a flat hierarchy with 31 members in it. Or it can have a weekly distrbution, or.....

Informatica and Essbase Best Practice questions

We now have the Informatica adapter for Essbase installed and working. We have been able to get Informatica to upload data successfully. Now I have a few questions that I have not been able to find answers to in any documentation or forums for Informatica or Essbase. I have submitted these same questions to the Informatica Support but thought I would also post the questions here to see if many folks are using Informatica against Essbase.
We are using:
Informatica 8.6.1 (Linux)
Essbase 11.1.1.3 (Windows 2003)
1) I can see in Informtica that when we load data to Essbase (Target) it gives me the option to run a calc script AFTER it loads the data. However, if I need to run a Calc script BEFORE the load to Essbase (Target) what is the best practice? The work around I have found was to add the same session twice and for the 1st instance select the option to 'ONLY RUN THE CALC SCRIPT' on the mapping tab. The problem with this is the log shows that it will still run the query against the Source tables. This will impact run times and double to querying against the Source database. What is the Best Practice and proper way to build the workflow to Run a Calc Script BEFORE the load?
2)Since you do not see the list of Calc Scripts for Essbase in Informatica (you have to manually type the Calc name), If I want to run the 'Default' calc for Essbase what is the syntax to run the 'Default' Calc Script? Tried 'Default' but didn't seem to work.
3)I have other tasks in Essbase I want to do before actually having Informatica load the data. I would like to run the MAXL commands via a Command task. What is the Best Practice for doing this and the syntax to run MAXL commands in a Command Task in Informatica? I previously had Shell scripts built on the Informatica server that would be kicked off within Informatica, but we are trying to move away from shell scripts and instead have the scripting codes IN the workflows/sessions to make it easier to review the code and follow the logic, rather than having to find the scripts and open each of them.
Any assistance you have with the two products working together I would GREATLY appreciate it!

AS i know addUser(User user){ ... } is much more useful for several reasons:
1.Its object oriented
2.its easy to write , because if Object has many parameters its very painful to write method with comma seperated parameters

I have a question regarding the ASO applications for telecom company built in Essbase 11 version. Please provide your feedback on the design.
The ASO application has the following number of Dimensions:

The data is mostly sparse. Does this design yield a good performance. Should I change some of the attributes to UDAs to increase the performance.I think Attribute dimensions are more flexible than UDAs but it affects the performance of the retrieval.

In ASO attribute dimensions are treated like regular dimensions, That is to say they are materalized just like a regular dimension. Changing them to UDA's won't buy you the same performance as having them as dimensions will. The one nice thing about Attributes in ASO cubes (and BSO cubes) is you don't clutter us the screen with dimensions that are not used a lot. If your attrubite dimensions are used often in your ASO cube, there would be no performance difference if you made them regular dimensions.

Setting Essbase to Direct I/O Question

Hi!
I am trying to configure my only (already existing) database to use direct I/O instead of buffered.
After I have changed the settings and stopped and started the application the outline is empty and any access (smart view or excel add-in) denied. Changing back solves the problem.
The environment is a unix box with solaris 10.
Any experience on how to set this properly? (i.e. do I need to re-start the server)

Can you speak about what kind of speed issue you are trying to address and what kind of improvements you are hoping to gain?
I would recommend other factors be looked at before changing this option. You would normally want to take a holistic approach for performance reviewing your outline order, calculation scripts, business process at times (sometimes people do ask for unreasonable things), utilization of disks -- are there "hot" disks that are always busy in an array, are cache's in a SAN being fully utilized. More invasive optimizations may even involve dropping a dimension where the business process supports -- probably only worth looking at this if you have > 10 dimensions in a BSO app.
Back to your question, you should always prove out this type of option in a non-production environment try to understand what performance gains (if any) and get an idea of the cache changes you will need to make -- once Direct I/O is enabled you now have 3 Essbase caches Index, Data, and then Data File Cache (only for Direct IO). Assuming you are using 32-bit Essbase, AIX has a 1.7GB limit per individual application -- if you start giving several hundred MB of cache to the Essbase Cache's you can begin bumping up against the 1.7GB limit (you don't want to have this happen during production).
The AIX Server and Essbase Server do not require a restart for the direct I/O changes to take effect. You will need to involve your AIX administration team to have the filesystem setting changed and enacted -- they are best suited to recommend the proper procedures -- usually this involves shutting down any processes active on a given filesystem.

EPMA Essbase vs. Classic Essbase | Best practice question

Dear all,
With no formal training on the topic of EPMA but with the experience of using it together with Planning, I'm aware that deployment in EPMA is destructive for any content created manually in the Essbase application under it.
e.g. when doing a full deployment all manually added calculation scripts will be erased.
I have following questions about the Essbase EPMA applications:
Is Essbase deployment similar destructive as with EPMA Planning?
Must all application content also reside in both EPMA and calculation manager? Is it possible to only use EPMA to control master data and do all other actions in Essbase?
I see a real added value of using EPMA for a client of mine but if I (fear that I) might need to tell them to migrate all their scripts from Essbase administration console to Calculation manager. As such, it will be hard to find the added value of the switch for them.
What about Essbase studio? I'm not aware of any need for Essbase studio in the context of a Planning EPMA implementation, but what about Essbase EPMA? Is this a must-do, adviced or just nice to have?

It depends what you mean by destructive, if you mean does it suffer from the same sort of problems then yes, personally I find it difficult to understand the benefits of moving away from a classic way of maintaining essbase applications to an EPMA managed world, just my opinion.
You should be able to see use calc scripts in the same way as before and the same goes for other functionality.
Essbase Studio is required as EPMA uses some of the codeline to deploy the applications to Essbase.

Essbase system9 and 11 bad question :(

hi all,
am sure many are going to hit me for this question.
Ive got a situation, where my client is upgrading from essbase 9 to 11. i did the installation and config on their UAT and everything went fine. system worked with all their system9 apps.
they came back to me today asking if its possible to eliminate weblogic server, http server and the rdbms used during configuration. and i was dumb struck.
then i got to see their backup server and production server, running configurator on both servers showed that the system is not configured, not a single component was configured and yet they all seem to work fine.
Now they are asking me to implement essbase 11.1.2.1 without doing the configuration. :( ive never did something like that nor have read anything like that in documents.
please do help me out with this situation. please let me know if by any rarest chance its possible to run without config, without rdbms.

thanks john, for clarifying me on this issue. Now ive completed installation and configuration of essbase 11 on their UAT server, everything is working fine in 11. But in essbase 9.3.1 lying on the same UAT machine, we are not able to start the applications. its throwing error like" Failed to start application xxxx. License restricted to one application" When Starting or Creating an Application in Essbase.
I even checked the registry.properties file for ANALYTICS_RESTRICTED_OPT=false,false and its set to right values as defined in oracle support ( [ID 802354.1])
is it because of essabse 11 installation or is it due to some other reasons.

Automating Essbase version 11.1.1.3 Client Installs Question?

Sorry if this is not the place to post this question, but does anyone know if there is any other way to install Essbase client components individually for Essbase add-in and Essbase administration services (EAS) without using the Oracle install tool? I have a client that needs to automate the installation for 600 users and because they have no standard image the program they use needs to push the software to the desktops prior to starting the install.
Using the installation tool required that approximately 4 GB of software be pushed to the client workstations prior to installing the software and they would like a smaller foot print. I know that SmartView has a thin installation program, but does anyone know of another option other than using the install tool provided by Oracle for the Essbase add-in and EAS?

For EAS you can always use the web client so you wouldn't need to install anything on the client machine.

Essbase MDX question

Hi there
I am at a client where I have to do comparative store analysis. Basically with MDX I need to do the following:
When doing comparable store analysis on a daily level in my Time dimension a store must have traded a year ago on the same comparable day as per the company's trading calendar.
When doing comparable store analysis on a weekly level a store must have traded a year ago for the full same comparable previous year's week (i.e. all the days in the week) as per company's trading calendar.
If the criteria is not met #missing must be returned else the day or week value.
On day level my MDX works fine:

The question is on a week level how do I check if a store traded on every single day of the same week last year. Getting the week is no problem, but checking every child of that week.
Just another point on this: I need to do this on month, quarter etc levels as well, so hard coding to check from day 1 to 7 will not suffice.

You are correct, currently Essbase does not support updates via MDX.

QUESTION: Essbase data extraction and Installing ODI Agent??

For extracting data from Essbase cubes, ODI has "LKM Hyperion Essbase DATA to SQL".
We can use (1). ReportScript, or (2). MDX-query, or (3). CalcScript
For data-extraction using CalcScript, ODI Agent must be running on the same server as the Essbase server.
Does anyone know if there is a need for ODI Agent on the Essbase machine if we use MDX-query method for data-extraction?
We would like to avoid installing ODI Agent for Essbase data-extraction.

We want to avoid Replicated-partitioning OR CalcScripts, if possible.
