Can we read Excel file using UTL_FILE? is there a way i could read xsl file?

UTL_FILE can read text or binary files.
An xsl file is a binary file, so yes you could read that binary data using UTL_FILE and then do what with it? store it in a BLOB column on the database maybe, but what use is that.
I'm guessing when you say you want to read an Excel file, you want to actually get at the data in the spreadsheets, not just read the whole binary file as binary data. In that case, no, UTL_FILE cannot read the user data out of an Excel file.
Oracle provides Heterogeneous Services (HS) to allow you to connect to other things using e.g. ODBC connectivity. Microsoft happen to provide an ODBC driver for Excel, so, you can actually set up oracle to connect to the Excel workbook as if it's a database. These are the general steps you would do to achieve that...
1- On the Oracle database server (Windows server) Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Data Sources (ODBC)>System DSN and create a data source with appropriate driver. Name it EXCL.
2- In %ORACLE_HOME%\Network\Admin\Tnsnames.ora fie add entry:
EXCL =
  (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
      (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 10.12.0.24)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
      (SID = EXCL)
    (HS = OK)
  )Here SID is the name of data source that you have just created.
3- In %ORACLE_HOME%\Network\Admin\Listener.ora file add:
(SID_DESC =
  (PROGRAM = hsodbc)
  (SID_NAME = <hs_sid>)
  (ORACLE_HOME = <oracle home>)
)under SID_LIST_LISTENER like:
SID_LIST_LISTENER =
  (SID_LIST =
    (SID_DESC =
      (SID_NAME = PLSExtProc)
      (ORACLE_HOME = d:\ORA9DB)
      (PROGRAM = extproc)
    (SID_DESC =
      (GLOBAL_DBNAME = ORA9DB)
      (ORACLE_HOME = d:\ORA9DB)
      (SID_NAME = ORA9DB)
    (SID_DESC =
      (PROGRAM = hsodbc)
      (SID_NAME = EXCL)
      (ORACLE_HOME = D:\ora9db)
  ) Dont forget to reload the listener
C:\> lsnrctl reload4- In %ORACLE_HOME%\hs\admin create init<HS_SID>.ora. For our sid EXCL we create file initexcl.ora.
In this file set following two parameters:
HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO = excl
HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL = 05- Now connect to Oracle database and create database link with following command:
SQL> CREATE DATABASE LINK excl
2 USING 'excl'
3 /
Database link created.Now you can perform query against this database like you would for any remote database.
SQL> SELECT table_name FROM all_tables@excl;
TABLE_NAME
DEPT
EMPNote:
1) Each worksheet in the Excel workbook is taken to be a "table" with the worksheet name being the table name (must not exceed the 30 character limit of Oracle, as Excel allows 32 chrs).
2) The first row on the worksheet provides the column names for the table (again, limited to 30 characters)
3) The second and subsequent rows provide the actual rows of data on the table.
4) The above works for an Oracle server running on Windows. It's possible to set up something similar on Unix boxes, but this would require obtaining some specific odbc drivers for that particular operating system and setting them up according to that flavour of unix.

  • Need to generate the excel file with diffrent sheets using utl_file package

    Hi,
    Sorry for previous message in which I had missed the usage of " UTL_FILE " package
    I need to generate the excel file with diffrent sheets . Currently I am generating the data in three diffrent excel files using
    " UTL_File " package and my requirement is to generate this in a single excel file with diffrent sheets.
    Please help on this
    Thanks & Regards,

    Hello 10866107,
    at Re: How to save a query result and export it to, say excell? you can find links to different solutions. At least the packages behind second and fourth link support more than one worksheet.

  • Uses the library to get UTL_FILE to read a excel file in PL SQL?

    Good day.
    Someone can give me some code that uses the library to get UTL_FILE to read a excel file in PL SQL?
    I intend to use this library because I want to run a script on my machine to treat an excel file without having to make changes on the server.
    Thank you.

    Thank you.
    Ranit's links are useful, you should read them.

    UTL_FILE is not the best choice for reading data from Excel files.
    It also will not be able to read an Excel file located on your client computer.  As with any PL/SQL code on the database, it can only access things that the server itself can see, so that doesn't include hacking across the network, bypassing network security, and hacking into the client computers operating system to read files directly from it's hard disk.  This isn't how client server architecture is intended to work.

  • Creating excel file on client machine using oracle pl/sql code

    Hi All,
    I have a situation where in i need to create an excel output file in my client machine, but using UTL_FILE i understood that i need to create the directory on server and i need to read and write on server itself.
    Is there any other way where we can create a excel file other than oracle server, bcos this is used only once and there is no scheduler to execute on server.
    Please do the needful.
    Thanks,

    The server should create the data set required by the client - do all the (intense) server processing that servers do well. This data set is then send to the client. The client is responsible for rendering that data set.. or saving it to the client machine storage if needed.
    Within PL/SQL that is quite easy to do using the most common/standard client-server in use today - web based client-server.
    The client is a web browser. It makes a call to the web server, that is serviced by a PL/SQL database procedure - a so-called web enabled procedure. It processes the request from the web browser, and returns a dynamic response. This response can range from HTML and XML, to video and image streams - and also CSV (Character Separated Values) data.
    By default, most web browsers will use the local client spreadsheet application (like MS Excel) to open the CSV response received. Many web browsers will also provide an alternate option of saving that response as a CSV file (that can then be opened later using MS Excel).
    Straight forward and basic client-server - and easily done using PL/SQL. Even easier done using (freeware) Oracle APEX (Application Express). APEX is a PL/SQL software suite that provides a web development system (only web browser required for development) and a run-time system to run the web application you have created.

  • Generating Excel file using PL/SQL

    Hi,
    I wanted to generate the excel file using the below pasted PL/SQL which I have downloaded from one of the tech sites. And as I have very limited knowledge about PL/SQL I really dont know how & where I should compile this below mentioned code and get the desired O/P?
    Please reply me ASAP if anybody can help me with this?
    Please see the below code and please help me to interpret the same.

    To call them from outside the package, you have to prefix each procedure name with the package name, like this:
    declare
    k_file constant varchar2(30) := 'YourFile.xls'
    begin
    gen_xl_xml.create_file(k_file);

  • How can one  read a Excel File and Upload into Table using Pl/SQL Code.

    How can one read a Excel File and Upload into Table using Pl/SQL Code.
    1. Excel File is on My PC.
    2. And I want to write a Stored Procedure or Package to do that.
    3. DataBase is on Other Server. Client-Server Environment.
    4. I am Using Toad or PlSql developer tool.

    If you would like to create a package/procedure in order to solve this problem consider using the UTL_FILE in built package, here are a few steps to get you going:
    1. Get your DBA to create directory object in oracle using the following command:
    create directory TEST_DIR as ‘directory_path’;
    Note: This directory is on the server.
    2. Grant read,write on directory directory_object_name to username;
    You can find out the directory_object_name value from dba_directories view if you are using the system user account.
    3. Logon as the user as mentioned above.
    Sample code read plain text file code, you can modify this code to suit your need (i.e. read a csv file)
    function getData(p_filename in varchar2,
    p_filepath in varchar2
    ) RETURN VARCHAR2 is
    input_file utl_file.file_type;
    --declare a buffer to read text data
    input_buffer varchar2(4000);
    begin
    --using the UTL_FILE in built package
    input_file := utl_file.fopen(p_filepath, p_filename, 'R');
    utl_file.get_line(input_file, input_buffer);
    --debug
    --dbms_output.put_line(input_buffer);
    utl_file.fclose(input_file);
    --return data
    return input_buffer;
    end;
    Hope this helps.

  • Exporting data from Oracle to an existing Excel file

    Hi,
    I want to know if it is possible to open up an excel file on the server (with the necessary lay-out) and to write the query results in it?
    Another remark: the file needs to be saved under a different name (we use the user name as part of the files since the file will be sent through email rather than be displayed on the user's screen)

    If you are satisfied with a straight dump, you might want to use utl_file to make a standard CSV-file.
    If you need a little more control of the layout, you might want to check out the SYLK file format (quite ancient)
    These require no Excel application and works on UNIX servers too. If you really have to have the full magic (on a Win32 platform) you could try using Jacob or some other Java-COM-bridge to launch the Excel-application and enter the values into the worksheet but this falls into the "duct tape and chewing gum"-category of stability in my opinion...

  • Creating Excel Files on 9i

    What is the best approach/method to creating excel files on 9i using PL/SQL stored procedures/packages?
    I have seen multiple posts on this topic but would like one source for this solution. I have also visited asktom and seen an example using owa_sylk. However, that one is specific to Oracle 8. Is there a newer and more efficient way to creating Excel files?

    Is there a newer and more efficient way to creating Excel files?Nope.
    And if you are required to use a stored procedure, then the best way is to write out a .csv file using UTL_FILE which is probably what you saw in the examples you mentioned.

    TEXT_IO is a PL/SQL package available only in Forms (you'll want to post in the Forms forum for more information). It is not available in a stored procedure in the database (where the equivalent package is UTL_FILE).
    If the Terminal Server machine and the database machine do not have access to the file system on the client machine, no application running on either machine will have access to the file. Barring exceptional setups (like the FTP server on the client machine), your applications are not going to have more access to the client machine than the operating system does.
    If you map the client drives from the Terminal Server box, there is the potential for your Forms application to access those files. If you want the files to be accessible to a stored procedure in the database, you'll need to move the files somewhere the database can access them.

    Hi,

    http://technology.amis.nl/2011/02/19/create-an-excel-file-with-plsql/
    but the requirement is to generate excel 2003 file.
    I tried changing the .xlsx to .xls and it gives a note while opening the file "The file you are trying to open, abc.xls, is in a different format than specified by the file extension. Verify that the file is not corrupted and is from a trusted source before opening the file. Do you want to open the file now?"Then you have three options:
    1) stop using anton's package and find another one that supports the old and deprecated version of Excel 2003
    2) write your own package to produce an Excel file.
    3) Upgrade your version of Excel to a recent version
    I tried the programs from other links on the forum but I am still getting this message. The client does not want this message to be displayed as the excel file works as an input to another system.
    Can anyone help me with the issue?
    Also, is it true that the programatically generated excel file is actually an xml file which is renamed to .xls and hence it shows the message while opening such files?Yes, Excel supports several different formats for it's files. By default, if you save an XLS files from Excel, it writes it out in a Microsoft proprietary binary format, which you would be hard pushed to replicate easily from PL/SQL. Excel also has the ability to save it's files as XML format, which is more readable and easier to produce programatically, whilst still allowing you to have multiple sheets, formulas and formatting included in it. That's the format that most people who need formatting and multiple sheets opt for when programatically generating their data as excel workbooks. (There's also an SLYK format that people used to use before that, but it's not as flexible)
    If you want to write your own, the easiest thing to do is to start with a blank workbook in Excel, and put in your basic requirements e.g. a couple of named sheets, and some data in different formats (number, date, text etc.) and different formatting options etc. Save that file in XML format from Excel and then open up the file using notepad/wordpad to look at the structure. There'll be a whole load of redundant rubbish Microsoft put in there, but you should be able to figure out the basic structure of XML required to give you what you want.

  • Writing in to multiple sheets in Excel file based on input condition

    Hi All Experts,
    i need to write in to multiple sheets in one Excel file output.
    is it possible with UTL_FILE ? or Any options there in Oracle to do this ?
    Can anyone please suggest me on this.
    Thanks,
    Ravi

    I have seen all of them they are all just simple SQL pulls from database in to Excel file..No, definitely not
    My requirement is i need to write in to one single Excel file with MULTIPLE sheets based on input condition-> [xml_spreadsheet|http://matzberger.de/oracle/spreadsheet-en.html]
    so for each parameter need to write into separate sheet in one Excel File..-> [xml_spreadsheet|http://matzberger.de/oracle/spreadsheet-en.html]
    I hope you understand my problem atleast now...I think I understood your problem at first sight.
    If you simply want to throw 2 queries at the package and get back an Excel file with 2 worksheets you just have to look at the first page of the [tutorial |http://matzberger.de/oracle/spreadsheet-tut-en.html]. Half way down the page there's an example.
    If you want a special formatting then you can do this too, it's described step by step.

  • Incorrect format in Excel file

    I have 2 columns in a table -
    Column C1 is a varchar2 with values like -ABC, -MNO etc i.e. every value has a '-' as the first character.
    Column C2 is a number column.
    Through a procedure, I send them to Excel file but the column C2 is displayed as text column left aligned. How do I get it as a number column in the Excel file? It happens due to the '-' in the first column.

    What is the purpose of the - character? I don't understand why Excel thinks c2 is not a number field, if it contains values like -111. A .CSV with a column of negative numbers would open up in the general number format.
    Through a procedureWhat sort of procedure? Something using SYLK? Or some other PL/SQL API?Or a Stored Java Procedure? Or UTL_FILE to write a .CSV file?
    Honestly I don't know how you expect us to solve your problem when you give us so little to go on.
